    Veal Piccata

Spent a nice family dinner here during our visit to Virginia. We got and shared a clam appetizer which was phenomenal. We ended up taking the extra sauce home and using it for dipping bread in (leftovers). The ambiance is nice and romantic, they dimmed the lights while we were there and the whole restaurant seemed warm and inviting. We had several people in our party, so we got to try several dishes including the Veal Piccata (my dish), the ravioli, rack of lamb, and a crab cake special. Everything was superbly cooked and presented. The table service was excellent, and accommodating. The main course meal did take a bit longer than we had anticipated, but the staff informed us and apologized for the delays. We had my daughter with us (3 years old), and I'd say that the restaurant isn't the most kid friendly, but we had brought a game and toy for her to play with and everything was great!

Let me start by saying what a charming town. So worth the stop! This tiny restaurant sits on Main Street, in an old brick building which was probably built in the early 1900's. Upon entering we were greeted immediately by the waitress and were seated at a beautiful table. The menu offered many options from light to heavy. We opted for a couple of glasses of Chardonnay, cup of Cream of Crab soup, Cobb Salad and. Crab cake Sandwich. The Cream of Crab soup was a little disappointing-the soup itself had the flavor but was runny and offered little crab. I personally would have topped the soup with a small scoop of crab, makes a pretty presentation. Regardless the salad and sandwich did not disappoint. Looking forward to trying other restaurants in this charming town.

Service was horrible. Food mediocre. And would be a great place if you want to wait 50 minutes for dinner.

George may not have slept here, but he may have stopped by for Sunday brunch on occasion during his Yorktown Campaign or his presidency. The Washington Hotel bears his name and it has been rehabilitated and maintained in colonial style to feel genuine and welcoming. When I walked in they were doing a bridal shower, so I grabbed a stool in the barroom near the back kitchen. Service was amenable despite working their tooshies off for the bridal party. I didn't mind waiting and having a break from the long drive home from Newport News. There were several ghosts accompanying me at the bar. The food was excellent. Veggie Omelet and Potato Hash were both farm to table fresh, and the coffee was brisk and hot. Worth the wait. The hotel was as much museum as bed & breakfast. Tons of charm without being gitchee. And, right off Route 13 on the Eastern Shore. Easy on and off. Five Historic Stars for Sugar Water and the Washington Hotel.

We all agreed that we did not want to stop for fast food, which is all we kept seeing along the way. A road service sign led us to this restaurant and we couldnt be more thankful. Coming from NY, we rarely, if ever get authentic soul food, and were not going to pass up on this chance. Located in an unassuming strip mall, Kendall's Kountry Kitchen was a 40 seat adorable restaurant. When we arrived there was a large family party, but the rest of the restaurant was quite empty. After being seated right away, we saw as the restaurant slowly began to fill up. By the time we left, the enture place was full. Our waitress Jemiah (sorry if I am spelling that wrong) was so sweet and welcoming. Our orders for drinks and food were taken right after she introduced herself. We ordered 2 of the fried chicken meals and one pork chop dinner. Each came with two sides and cornbread. We all shared the sides and were able to all try the mashed potatoes, baked apples, collard greens (we got two orders-they were out of fried okra) macaroni and cheese and the corn pudding. All amazing! Our mains were all cooked to perfection, served piping hot and tasted great. The waitress explained that all meals were cooked to order and to expect about a 20 minute wait. (Just something to remember if you are in a rush). Thankfully we had plenty of time and must agree that this is a meal that should be savored and given a generous amount of time to consume. We left nothing on our plates! I also ordered a bread pudding to take home (stuffed from the meal) and enjoyed it on my way home. The food, hospitality and general vibe of this place was refreshing and not something we come across often living up north. We plan to make this an annual stop (to and from) our beach vacations.

Southern home cooking but no chicken livers, asked for fried catfish and was denied, asked for fried trout and again was turned down. Ty said whiting was available which I'm not a big fan of but ordered it. It came out nice & hot but she didn't offer any cocktail sauce nor tartar sauce. Mildly seasoned breading, nothing spectacular. My dinner party ordered pork chops and cheeseburger, both mediocre. Ty waited on the next table over and she didn't deny them catfish and gave them a choice of cocktail or tartar. When we asked for a refill, again she said they're out.... I normally don't like to pull a race card but I found it offensive she was more agreeable to the table with black patrons... 2 stars for service & atmosphere, 3 for food

Instead, one of the three teenagers running the hostess stand, yelled out, "How many?!" After the second time, we realized she was shouting at us from across the room. When I told her "Four," she responded, "Four?!" Yes. God. Also, FTR: If you have a child who has allergies or is picky as all get and you want to bring him a sandwich to eat at the table with you so that you and your family can enjoy something other than pizza, don't come here. We looked at the kids' menu and there was nothing our son wanted so, we put our order in-- spent over $100. I went out to our car (we are traveling so we had stuff for PB+J). I grabbed him a bag of chips and a milk box and went back inside. He ate about halfway through his sandwich, and our server came to the table and said that the owner told her that we couldn't bring food in the restaurant because it was a health code violation (which it isn't-- we looked it up). Just pettiness that we brought food instead of buying a kids' meal while they had a full restaurant of people giving them business-- not suffering there that they need to be *that* kind of weird about missing out on the sale of a kids' meal to a family spending over $100. My husband ended up taking him outside to sit on a bench and finish his food while we waited for them inside. So much for eating together as a family. I will admit that, after going outside to check on my husband and son, I noticed a sign on the door that said "No Outside Food or Drinks." If it hadn't been there, I might have said something. Cherry on top was, soon after we were told we couldn't bring our son food inside, we noticed a young child wandering in and out of the kitchen. Not sure where he came from but it didn't seem in line with their commitment to their "health code." Definitely didn't look safe. No one stopped this kid even though they saw him. Okay, about the food-- it was mediocre, at best. Hush puppies were supposed to famous good, but they were average. A bit too sweet for our liking, but improved with a smear of butter. Crab dip was tasty but very heavy with a lot of cheese. Would actually be nice if it was served with thin tortilla chips instead of pita. Crab cakes were good, but nothing exceptional. Had a decent flavor and a light batter. Minimal filler and could taste that they were made with fresh crab. Clam chowder tasted like canned vegetable soup with just a few of the tiniest, almost indistinguishable, pieces of rubbery clam inside. We also got a dozen steamed oysters. These were okay, but many of the oysters had shell broken and bits of shell that we had to pick out of the oysters. Should say, my son got water to drink and the water tasted really off. My husband tried it and agreed that it had an off-putting metallic-y taste. Honestly, the ordeal with us bringing in food for our son and having to interrupt our family meal to take him outside to eat, put a bad taste in our mouth and made it hard to enjoy our meal. Didn't help that the owner was floating around and avoiding us as if we were being shunned for our "terrible" behavior. Silliness. Best thing about our experience was our server, Vicki, who was very sweet and attentive. If you come here without the audacity to bring food for your picky kid with allergies, ask for Vicki to take care of you, and order the fried crab cakes.
