They said they didn't have Ocean Scallops but they had Bay Scallops, I asked what is the Difference and the lady replied they are sweeter. We were traveling from Maryland back home to VA, so i did a google search for seafood. This place was promising based on the reviews. I don't know how this place has good reviews. The food was average at best. I gave 2 stars because the shrimp and hush puppies were okay. The flounder was bland and tasted old. The crabcake was small, mushy and definitely didn't have any decent crab meat in it. I dont know if it was filler or maybe claw meat but it was terrible. We threw most of our food in the trash. Wasted almost $50. If you love fresh, seasoned, GOOD seafood, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. read more

Real deal seafood spot right on Rt 13. Fish, crabs, shrimp, scallops, crab cakes and seasonal oysters make up most of the menu. Everything is lightly fried and tastes amazing. Hush puppies are tremendous. Fries and cole slaw are perfect sides. Food is everything you could hope for from a local seafood stop heading up the coast. Prices great too for the quality of the food. The only draw back is there's nowhere to enjoy your food, at least not when we went (June '21), other than in your car or back home/where you're staying. There is no indoor seating and although the outdoor seating would be sufficient, the flies are like nothing I've ever seen before and the three stray cats enjoying the seafood scraps make it impossible to sit and enjoy your meal. If you're cool with eating in your car with the windows up, this is worth the stop. Food is outstanding. Locals and tourists are about 50/50. Half the cars in the lot are from out of state. We were getting hungry on our drive thru the Eastern Shore. I'd noted Metompkin seafood on previous treks thru the area. It doesn't look like much from the outside, with hand painted signs and a handwritten menu posted on a bulletin board outside the door, but with few other options for food nearby, we stopped in. There were three sizes of fresh shrimp on ice in one refrigerated display case and some homemade crabcakes in another. There was not a lot on display, to be sure. But there were plenty of other options on the menu. We opted for a half pound of steamed shrimp as a gluten-free option and a clam strip basket. Both were made to order and were ready in less than 10 minutes. Meanwhile, we had a very nice conversation with the lady at the counter which made the time pass more quickly. We're from MA and we know the best seafood is usually from shacks, but we were disappointed. It wasn't awful, but it was just a grease-bomb that you regret as you move on down the road. I'll say this, the hush puppies and shrimp were both very good. Their property is covered with feral cats and while this sounds cute, I really worry about them living that close to a road that busy and I wish a rescue organization would come in, trap and relocate them humanely. If I could give 10 or 100 stars to Metompkin Seafood I would. This is the place you imagined you'd find as you take 13 into Virginia. Who can resist the hand lettered signs, promising fried fish and shrimp and crab cakes? Who can resist old nautical decor? The place is so authentic you think it must be decorated by some enterprising hipster trying to re-create an Eastern Shore seafood place, but it isn't. This is the real deal. It is what roadtrippers and seafood lovers are looking for. And, the people are friendly, and, most importantly, the food is great. I've been there several times, and have never left without a whew, that was good, and kissing my fingers in the stereotyped Italian chef style. The folks at Metompkin know how to fry fish. Fish will be lightly coated with corn meal, and perfectly and simply seasoned with salt and pepper. I've had the fried fish, shrimp, crab cakes, fries, coleslaw, and noting has ever been less than lip smacking. The place serves locals and tourists. All are treated with the same care. It's a tiny store with both take away and fresh seafood at incredible prices. A lot of locals who may or may not appreciate your presence. There's a sign prohibiting patrons from eating inside (there are 2 picnic benches), but there's a table inside, usually occupied by a local eating. My girlfriend had shrimp which was lightly breaded, large and plump. Spicy thanks to a splash of hot sauce. Now I will be honest that the food was about 3 star worthy tops. The extra star comes from the selection of gun magazines to read while waiting for your order and for the out dated duck mural on the back wall. And I will never forget the copy of the Holy Bible sitting on the condiment table.
