I'm a member of a small club of folks who sail kayaks. We get together four times a year. The Spring meetup is in Temperanceville VA. Every year we have a group dinner once during our week to ten days of sailing. For years we have gone to Captain E's for the simple but excellent food. I generally have seafood but I've also had their burgers and other dishes. When the weather is good, the outside dinning area is open and the tiki bar is serving drinks out back on the water. This place is typical of what you find in a small fishing village. Good food at a reasonable price. The service is friendly and responsive. I'll be back again next year. Give it a try. It's not that far off of Rt-13 as you go up and down the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland. read more

Delicious food and great service! We loved how close-knit the community is and how genuine and helpful they all were at Capt E's! The food was great! The most spectacular thing we ate were the Parmesan roasted oysters (see picture). If you are anywhere close to Saxis and Capt E's, it is worth the drive! This place is a hidden gem in Saxis! The restaurant is small but has an inside and outside bar. The outside bar is in a nautical setting with chairs in the sand facing the bay. Real cozy! My sister and I had take out for lunch and it was absolutely scrumptious! We shared two platters. One was a crab cake sandwich with French fries. The crab cake was loaded with large chunks of crabmeat on a potato roll. It was lightly fried and had very little filler. One of the best crab cakes that I have tasted on the Eastern Shore! The second platter had six nicely sized, fried shrimp. You could tell that the shrimp very pretty fresh. Our sides included French fries and pasta salad. The fries seemed to be fresh cut and the pasta salad was also pretty good. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. The only bathrooms that I saw were two porta-potties...yikes! My sister has a summer home in Saxis and this hidden gem is so close to her house that I know we will be back! read more

I live on Delmarva but have to admit it was my first visit to Saxis. Its a great place to explore. The restaurant is a quirky tiki bar/homey place in Saxis, Virginia on the Pocomoke Sound. It is quite small but also has an outside seating area. The service was quick and very friendly. I heard a nearby table ask about where the seafood came from and the server remarked "Right out the back door." It is a watermen community after all. The other table also asked for a something different in how their seafood was prepared and the cook came out to make sure she understood what they wanted. Very polite and accommodating. I had a crabcake sandwich with coleslaw. The crabcake had very little filler and was very tasty. My husband had the oyster sandwich which he said was delicious and full of flavor. Both his fries and my coleslaw seemed homemade and very good. I would definitely eat there again. Get the Smith Island cake. It is a very dense cake and not to everyone's taste. I love it though so recommend giving it a try. While you are in town, don't forget to stop by the Saxis Museum. You passed it to get to the restaurant. read more

This was such a disappointing visit that I felt that I needed to share our experience. We have been to this restaurant several times in the past and have always enjoyed it. The service is always good and the waitresses are friendly and helpful. We recently went with another couple for an early dinner. This couple originally recommended Capt E's and they have been going there for a long time. We ordered a crab dip to share. It was just okay...not much crab meat, it was runny and it tasted like mayonnaise. The two men in our party ordered the seafood platter. The price was $46 each so we expected that it would be a nice amount of seafood on the platter. What was served was so disappointing...one piece of fried flounder, one fried crab cake and two fried shrimp. In addition, the crab cake had no flavor at all. This is a favorite of our guys and usually when ordering a seafood platter at any restaurant, there is so much food that they can't eat it all. We understand that prices have increased and restaurants are having to charge more, but this price was so out of line with the amount of food that you got. We would have been better off ordering two dinners instead of the seafood platter...a shrimp dinner ($18) with a least six shrimp and a crab cake dinner ($22); less cost and much more seafood. The shrimp dinners that both I and the other woman got were just okay. Their sides are really good. Maybe just opening for the season had something to do with our experience, but when spending well over $200 with a tip for an early dinner, we expected much more. We did eat inside on this visit. It appeared that they had a nice beach area outside along with a bar and a screened in area to dine. We were hoping to use this as a boat destination for lunch this summer, but at this point, we have no desire to go back to Capt E's anytime in the future. read more

I have always enjoyed the fresh seafood and casual atmosphere. I come by car and boat. Last night was the first time I had been in in just over a year. I was surprised. They have definitely upped the game. Service was on point. The food was on point and the Hurricanes are always good. Prices are competitive and may vary because of the daily prices of the seafood served. We had the Beef Fillet with Steamed Shrimp and the Crab Cakes for dinner. We also enjoyed a dozen fat fresh oysters on the 1/2. They were served in a nice wooden tray full of ice. We wrapped up the meal with a slice of Rebeccas Smith Island Cake.The food has always been good but there is some polish to the meal I have not had there before. The presentation on the new (to me) plates certainly was a pleasant surprise. I had always thought of this as good seafood in a basket sort of place. The atmosphere was the same with the room full of locals and friends. Just as welcoming as ever. Enjoy! read more

Sunday, Fathers day, first experience coming here. Looks great but we walked up and sat down at the outside bar and there were three people working in and around there. Not one person greeted us and said they were busy and would get to us. Seemed like they all avoided our eye contact until about 20 minutes into our arrival. We by then had decided to order a snack, a beverage and then keep riding around to other destinations. I had heard great things about this place. Snack was good and beer was cold once we were served. We will give it another try, however there are a couple of other places that bikes (motorcycles) like to go that the service is very friendly and immediate. read more

Cute seafood shack with outdoor beach /bar that is next to the dock or dine inside ( small dining room) The seafood chowder soup was amazing . Wasn't crazy about the old bay wings being they were batter fried but that is my preference not to have the added breading . I had the crab cake sandwich hubby had the dinner . I would have preferred the dinner didn't like the roll that the crab cake was on . The coleslaw was good. I shared the smith island cake with my sister in law again not a fan . This is a regional favorite but just not for me too sweet .. all in all would go again not cheap but tasty . read more

Got there around 4 and went to the outside bar. Was pretty busy. Stood at the bar to order drinks and waited for about 5 minutes before a bartender asked us what we wanted. Told her we wanted 3 beers and a Tito's and ginger ale. Received the bees within 3 minutes. Took about 6 minutes to get the Tito's and ginger ale. Eventually took a seat at the bar where we continued drinking and eating. Asked for the tab and gave them the card to cash out and and pay the tab about 5 minutes after inquired about it. Was told that they had to bring it inside to cash out and was told that the lady doing the credit cards was a little slow. Told them no worries but did mention that we had been waiting for about 10 minutes. About 5 minutes after that, having not recovered our card or the cashed out tab, we made a comment at the bar about why it was taking so long to pay a tab. The bartender mentioned that usually the manager has a card swipe on his phone that he uses but he wasn't in so they didn't have access to so they only had one machine that actually took credit cards and it was inside. (Side note: it was a Saturday around 5). After about 15 minutes of waiting to get our card back for paying a tab that was over $100, we started getting upset. One of the people in our party went to the cash register and inquired about it. The lady at the register told him that his bill was next. About 5 minutes after that (in total, about 25 minutes after they took our credit card to pay the tab), we start getting angry. We had been sitting at a bar without drinks for 25 minutes waiting to get our credit card back for paying a tab of over $100. Finally, two people in our party went to the register indoors and they got a little upset at the lady at the register. The bartenders were saying that the lady at the register was very old and was slow at processing credit cards but as a customer, we had mentioned that it was not very effective business practice to wait for 25 minutes to pay a tab that was $107. When the two members of our party mentioned to the lady at the register that they had been waiting for 25 minutes to get their slip, she actually printed the credit receipt and kind of threw it at them, as if it was their fault they were waiting 25 minutes for her to process the credit card. One of our parties mentioned to her that she could have handled that situation better and she was still very rude. After about 25 minutes of waiting to get our credit card back for paying the tab, the owner walked out with the two people in our party and actually asked them to leave. She told them they were not appropriate for mentioning to the cashier that she was taking a long time to cash them out (reminder: we had been waiting 25 minutes to get our credit card back) and she actually asked the two customer to leave her premises...after spending over $100! When I mentioned that she had to understand that as customer we were upset that it took over 25 minutes to pay our tab, she told me that I had to leave with my party. There was no apology for taking over 25 minutes to pay a tab - the owner just blamed us for being upset that we had to wait for over 25 minutes to wait for our credit card after giving it to them to pay for their tab. It was disappointing. As we were sitting there waiting for the tab, we were told that the business was family owned and he lady at the register was part of the family. I understand that, however as a customer, it's not fair to make someone wait 25 minutes to get a tab because the lady at the register is family and it takes her a long time to do credit cards. I worked as a bartender and waitress for over 15 years so I absolutely understand the business. What I really don't understand is having a customer wait for over 25 minutes to cash out their tab (having already given you their credit card) and then actually getting upset at the customer because they're a little mad that they've waited for over 25 minutes to get their credit card back. The owner should have had better business etiquette. She should have came out and apologized that we gave the bartender our card and it took over 25 minutes to cash out. That would have been the responsible thing to do as an owner. But, instead, she came out and reprimanded us for being upset that it took over 25 minutes to pay our tab. To the owner of Hurricane Grill, please reply to this and explain yourself because I would like to know why you think this is an appropriate business practice. I would also like potential customers to understand your business practices so they are aware of what to expect. I look forward to hearing your response. read more

Headed over from Chincoteague to check out this place in Saxis. It is absolutely in the middle of no where but worth the drive from anywhere. Very cool little restaurant and bar. We had soft shell crabs and crab cakes. The cake cakes were some of the best I have ever had. Soft shells were good too. The Smith Island cake was outstanding. Awesome place! We went twice in the same weekend. One of the three good restaurants on the shore. Best crab cake east of Baltimore. Crab fries, oysters and crab soup very good too. Had dinner on a Saturday. Inside was packed so ate outside at Tikibar area. Great beachy feel to outside area with a nice breeze coming off the bay. Three of us got great crab cake sandwiches and a side of coleslaw. Daughter received a generous portion of chicken tenders. Food, mixed drinks (try the Peach Hurricane), Smith Island Cake and atmosphere was great! Waitress was very attentive. Will definitely be back. read more
