the boloniya is my all time favorite bread, but it is CRAZY how much the price has gone up! we used to buy it in torrance for maybe $5? and now the SMALL PACK is almost $10. chocolate muffins are solid, and all the bread is really fresh. a family favorite is the dinner rolls unexpected favorite is the ice cream! nice crunch cereal on the bottom and good quality milk soft serve (tastes just like hokkaido soft serve from japan) on top! also priced very well! read more

Okay, have been eating their savory breads, especially those good sandwiches for a good long time. But now, I wanna say NO. Just check out the photo. What I have found on the morning when I just got to my work and try to eat one of their "Egg sandwich+BLT" and look what I luckily found ! I am so glad I didn't eat that piece of lettuce with this insect was sticking onto it! I pulled it while was eating the egg salad sandwich, because this strand of piece was sticking out. I pulled, then saw the little friend was dead and sticking inside of lettuce. Can't believe what I had to discover in the middle of eating it. Was almost finished with sandwich, had last bite of it. Now, I am just going to throw it away and feel so anxious that I may eat some insects. Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *btw, I never opened the box since I purchased it from the bakery, and put straight into the fridge till today's morning to eat it as a breakfast. Also, the lettuce were tightly layered, this insect was half-way squished. So, it was sticking onto the lettuce like it is a pepper or something. Thought it was a pepper first time glanced it, but pepper ain't got a wing!!!!!! So I immediately feeling disgusted, and looked into it carefully, Yelp, it was an insect. Ew!!! In addition, I am very afraid of insects, so thank you for this. I will remove you from my favorited listing and will not recommend but warn people around me about this place. That being said, I don't actually recommend the baked goods here! I come here for their soft serve ice cream. PRICES: - Green Tea $4 - Mixed $3.50 - Vanilla $3 - Toppings (1/$.50, 2/$.80, 3/$1.25): Walnuts, Almonds, Kinako, Chocolate Chips, Sweet Red Bean, Mochi Balls, Caramel Sauce, Kuromitsu, Chocolate Sauce I like the Green Tea Soft Serve Ice Cream. It had a good amount of green tea flavor to it and it wasn't too sweet as an ice cream. At the bottom of the cup, they have cinnamon toast crunch laying beneath the ice cream. It provides a nice amount of sweetness and the cinnamon goes with the green tea flavors surprisingly well. The crunch also gives nice texture to the dessert. The serving size is just one size and the cup is on the small size. I had no problem finishing it even though I was stuffed from dinner. What a lovely little place! We happened to stop by the UPS Store next door. We didn't realize there was a Mitsuwa in the same shopping center. Inside the Mitsuwa was this bakery. We ordered the curry pan, Boston creme donut, and the creme pan. Our favorite was the curry pan with the toasted sesame seeds. It was cold straight from the fridge case so I'm sure it probably would taste even better warm. Our second favorite was the creme pan. It was a delicate custard, not too sweet but just enough. Next time we hope to try the spicy pan and maybe some matcha drinks. We'll return for sure! read more

Got the GT mousse and it was wow very matcha-y. I love the intense strong flavors of GT which I've never experienced before at any other place. Then they have these cubed jello on top that add a different texture. The only thing I wasn't into was the super sweet red bean sauce they put on the bottom. The matcha soft serve was delicious - smooth and consistent and rich with the real matcha taste. They added the cracker bits/ cereal at the bottom which gave the soft serve a nice crunch to the dessert! For additional charge, you can add your add-on(s) as well. They have mochi, almonds, red bean, etc. In my opinion, the portion may seem small, but it was definitely enough for me! If you've had Matcha Love before, this place is very similar. Hamada-ya opened my eyes to the magic of Kinako & Kuromitsu flavors-- enough said. The Kinako frappe and milk tea are a must try! They also have amazing seasonal drinks, like strawberry milk (so simple but so good). If you're curious about what the Coffee Jelly Milk tastes like, it's like a milk coffee with espresso flavored jelly bits. It's really good and refreshing during any season or weather. The Kinako Milk Tea is Soybean Milk Tea, the roasted soybean brown powder (that you often see paired with mochi) is mixed together with hot milk. All of their pastries haven't disappointed thus far, I really enjoy coming here whenever I'm in the area. read more

There are just so many dessert places popping up around OC that I just can't keep up! Shops are now getting more and more creative with their desserts, which means they're also getting significantly more elaborate! I'm often reduced to a giant ball of anxiety when I walk into a store with too many options and choices and toppings! I love trying them all, but sometimes, when you're craving something sweet for dessert, you want something simple and satisfying. That's why I love Hamada-ya. It just never steers me wrong. This little bakery is tucked inside the Mitsuwa marketplace here in Irvine, and they have wonderful baked goods and drinks, but their soft serve ice cream is what keeps me coming back again and again. They have two flavors of soft serve, vanilla and green tea. You can get either, or a mix of both! I love getting the mixed swirl because the green tea is perfectly offset by the vanilla, and both flavors just enhance one other! They put cinnamon toast crunch cereal at the bottom of your swirl (which I didn't even know about the first time! what a pleasant surprise!), which I think complements the creamy, neutral soft serve flavors with it's burst of crunchy sweetness! Also it's a lot more clever than other ice cream shops that put it on top because that way you can fit more in your cup, and still have more of the topping when you get to the bottom of your dessert! If you're looking for an affordable, simple, but absolutely delicious dessert, I highly recommend Hamada-ya. Cream Cornet is the best out of everything in the bakery case and that is worth 5 stars. I've been coming here for years and I have literally tasted everything they offer and the cream cornet has consistently been a dream. The chocolate cornet is also good but the chocolate flavor is a little too heavy against the horn's light and fluffy texture. I like everything they sell though I am not a huge fan of red bean, but that's just mean. The Boston Cream donut is impressive but heavy, and it has whipped cream inside instead of the pudding/custard you'd expect in traditional Boston Cream pies. I for one appreciate the lighter alternative ("light" as light can be when eating a Boston Cream anything). Service is always efficient but not as friendly as it was years ago. The soft serve is great! Really like the fact that I can get it here and I don't have to go to the Costa Mesa Mitsuwa. If you're craving chocolate specifically, right next to Hamada-Ya is another counter and it is Royce' chocolate, the best chocolate I've had (considering I'm not a chocolate person). Now, it is worth mentioning that these bakery items are actually on the denser side when compared to other fluffier pastries you'd find at say 85 or Paris Baguette. I'm not saying Hamada-Ya is dense (American pastries are dense), but the items are dense relative to what other Asian bakeries offer. This is why I'm not giving it a higher rating. Swing by and give them a taste. You'll be happy you did. =) read more

This is a first visit for me. I loved the kinako milk tea frappe! And the An donut, eclaire, and the curry donut were all super! This place really has good product. But, in this modern age where credit card merchant service fees are the same for Amex as for Visa, MC, and Disc, you'd think the owner would be able to take all cards. But no Amex?? Come on, this not the 80's! For this big inconvenience, minus 1-star. I hope things change soon. read more

Yummy ice cream! This plaza actually lacks in the dessert department (only a mochilato, boba place, and this I think) so I decided to finally try the ice cream here (located inside Mitsuwa). At first, looking at the price it seemed a little too expensive ($4.00) for green tea. But after I got it, I can understand why. The portion size is great. Could be shared with 2 people if you're not a fan of ice cream. The texture of the soft serve is amazing! It also wasn't super sweet and had a rich matcha flavor. I didn't get any toppings with it but as I got to the bottom I got a surprise. There was a good amount of honey grahams (the cereal? We were at Mitsuwa Marketplace and decided to try it out. My girlfriend ordered their milk tea and I got a cream cornet and some other pastry. The milk tea was blander than most but I thought it was good still. I wouldn't order it unless I want a plainer milk tea. The cream corner has a buttery outside and the cream inside was sweet. Overall this bakery isn't a place that is tell my friends "you have to try it", but if you're around and want a yummy pastry, this is a good place to go to! read more

I had the green tea parfait here with the red beans and mochi toppings. They had a wide variety of breads and baked goods for sale also. The green tea ice cream/soft serve portion itself was delicious, it had a nice rich matcha taste to it that didn't feel like it was hidden away by the other flavors. My biggest gripe though was that they filled up the bottom portion of these parfait with these crisps that remind me of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. That led to less overall green tea ice cream and a bunch of crisps that I don't really care for. Overall the parfait was good, albeit a bit pricy. The total for my green tea parfait with 2 toppings and tax came a bit under $5, and I didn't feel like it was all that big given the crisps at the bottom. read more

If I'm ever in the area, I do swing by Hamada-Ya for their Iced Coffee Jelly drink. That's the main reason I come here. I remember there were times I'd come here and they would be out of it around evening time and I'd get so bummed! Anyways so I came by again to get one of those drinks, luckily they had it. But I notice not depending on who makes it the drink can be really good, or just ok. Today was the ok day... I was slightly upset because the coffee jelly wasn't as tasty and the balance was completely off. This barely seems to happen so I can't give it a bad review. It happens probably like 1 out of 10 times where my experience is just ehhh. And today the An-Donut (red bean stuffed donut) was kinda stale, hard and tasted old!!! Noooooo! Over the years of going to Hamada-Ya, I've always been a huge fan of their Matcha soft serve. Located inside a Japanese grocery store (Mitsuwa), it's super convenient to get after a quick lunch of ramen. But in my most recent visits, the quality is just not as great as it used to be. There seems to be less matcha in the ice cream every time I go back, and the portions have been getting smaller and smaller. I thought at first maybe they were just having an off day, but for the last few months it's really just been a hit or miss. Incredibly inconsistent. Same goes for the service. One week the workers are super kind and cheery, while the next week it just seems like they hate their job. Hopefully management does something about improving the consistency because the potential is definitely there. read more

Came here for the matcha soft serve and I've definitely had better. The matcha flavor was a bit too strong so it wasn't sweet enough. Also the texture of the soft serve was more icy than creamy or soft, so I didn't get to enjoy it fully. I always prefer softer ice cream (especially since it's soft serve) rather than the sorbet texture and too bad they didn't deliver on that. However, if you're just craving matcha flavored ice cream, this place isn't that bad. For $4, you get a giant cup of ice cream and you can also get it mixed with vanilla. There are toppings available (1 for 0.50, 2 for 0.80, and 3 for 1.25) but they looked pretty stale so we skipped those. The ice cream itself got boring after a while so I was glad that they put cereal underneath just like the Mitsuwa in Los Angeles. I do think the Mitsuwa in LA has softer and creamier matcha ice cream, and so does Matcha Love in Costa Mesa. Looks like I'll be going elsewhere for my matcha fix unless I'm in the area! read more

ugh. Can I get this every day? This spot is definitely a gem in the Mitsuwa food court! I'm a fan of everything this store sells, from the savory pastries to the cream puffs to the ice cream :) Dare I say it... I like the pastries here more than 85 :x but then again, it's been a while since I've had anything other than coffee at 85 :P Food: -CURRY DONUT: yaaaaaaaas!!!! They'll warm it up for you if you ask. Give it a shot! -ALMOND PASTRY: pretty good and not too sweet! If you're lucky, you'll get it fresh and it'll be a bit crispy :) -MATCHA/VANILLA SWIRL: omgawd. TBH, the road to my heart is paved in ice cream, but this ice cream is a bit special. The matcha has a stronger flavor than other places I've tried and the vanilla gives it some variety! They add a bit of graham crackers to the bottom of the cup so you get a bit of contrast in texture and flavor! The price is a bit steep for soft serve, but how can I say no to ice cream!? I came here to catch up with friends over a snack this rainy weekend. Since it was cold, I had 2 of their savory pastries warmed up - the curry donut and the aji-tama egg donut. The curry donut was okay - nothing too special and it overall felt greasy. However, I really liked the aji-tama egg donut! If you decide to go half and half then you can see that the vanilla really goes well with the green tea. It actually makes the green tea lighter if you want the flavor to be tone down a bit.
