What better way to get your fish fix than on a Friday? Came here when they had their BOGO halibut and chips offer. The halibut and chips and it was super fresh--crispy batter on the outside and tender inside. The chips were thick and golden. It didn't taste as greasy which was a big plus. It also came with coleslaw which was cool and tangy. There were a wide variety of sauces available on the table including ketchup, Tatar, salt, pepper, and vinegar. I love how convenient it is to just season your food the way you like it. The hash browns were nicely done, but the rest I had to add more salt still. Water also had to be asked to come. Halibut only was super expensive, server that took our order never told us there could be a smaller portion so my friend wasn't pleased. Just horrible. I had been to another HH once before and received a decent meal (breaded cod) and understanding service. I have a food allergy. This experience was a disaster. Could not communicate my allergy issue. Food was nearly inedible. Halibut was cooked to death. Fries were the worst I think I've ever had. We ate about 5%. When the salad was the best part of the meal you know it's trash. $52 for lunch for 2 (no drinks, water only) and we both left horrified. Never again! read more

This Halibut House Fish & Chips location is very spacious with lots of seating. The decor is simple and casual. The restaurant is clean. I went on around 2:30 pm. and ordered their Monday Special of Haddock & Chips ($12.99). The waitress, while polite enough, didn't appear to want to be there or was having an off day. I felt a bit rushed when ordering, and she didn't follow up with me during my meal. She had 3 other tables at the time. I've been to this location many times and think the food is consistently average good. The fish portion is good. The batter is light, and the fish moist. The fries are a hit or miss for me. Sometimes, it's really crispy on the outside and potatoey on the inside. Sometimes, the outside is hard and dryish on the inside. The coleslaw is vinegarette based and is decent. They provide a homemade tartar sauce when dining in and give you packets for takeout. I come here for convenience as the food is OK and close by. Scam artists. Menu for kids combo says soft drink included. I showed up to order takeout for my family. Ordered my son a kids special. Since he wasn't physically present they wouldn't honour the menu and give me the soft drink even though they charged full price. 'Your son isn't here so we're not giving it to you ' Stay away. Sad to say that I did not come out happy with my dining experience. The service was good as well as the restaurant's cleanliness. It was the value for food that got me disappointed. What we ordered was the Shrimp & scallop combo ($18.95) and the Fish tacos (3 pcs for $9.95). Even more than what can be expected, both dishes tasted quite the same fried, battery taste. There were also way too much fries in the Shrimp & scallop combo meal. I did not have very high expectations going in but left pleasantly surprised and satisfied with my experience here. I happened to be here on a day when they were offering their weekly special which was haddock and chips (Sundays and Mondays only) for around $8 so I ordered it along with the calamari. Given the low price I expected a scaled down portion for the haddock and chips but was surprised when it arrived at my table as the portion was very generous. The fish was not all batter either as there was actually quite a bit of fish in the dish. Taste wise it was pretty good and I especially liked the tartar sauce. The calamari was not bad as well. When the waitress brought it I thought they looked like chicken nuggets but when I bit into it sure enough it was calamari. The staff here were all friendly and checked in to make sure I was good throughout my meal. They were chatting up with most of the guests and were very patient and helpful with assisting guests in ordering. The wait time for the food was average as the calamari arrived at my table fairly quickly and the haddock took a bit more time. The restaurant was spacious with a lot of seating and felt clean and overall comfortable to be in. All in all I was very happy with my visit to Halibut House. If first impressions are important then Halibut House has made a very good one with me. Definitely look to be back soon. read more

We have been here a number of times and enjoyed. In particular we went on Good Friday and had the traditional fish and chips. We find their meals very generous, so my hubby and I shared a 2 piece cod and chips. We also added some mushy peas on. They serve malt vinegar with their offering. If you want tartar sauce, you only have to ask! Service is fast and friendly, and cost is very reasonable. Do check it out. Fish is flaky with a light, crispy batter. Not usually in this area for breakfast but was glad to see a 'chain' that I was familiar with. I wrote a review 2 days ago regarding their other location on Hwy7/Ninth specifying that the peameal bacon portion was too little. I said I'd go back, and I did. This location on danforth is renovated. It's got a lot of the branding in the tile work on the walls and it is nice. Grabbed a seat and ordered the two egg breakfast with home fries, regular bacon and whole wheat toast no butter. Eggs were ordered over medium. Food arrived in a very reasonable amount of time which made me happy. I punctured the egg and out flowed the beautiful yolk. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Onto the potatoes. Crispy on the outside, nice and light on the inside is how I like my home fries. This location delivered. Toast has no butter so I was happy. Bacon was meh. Honestly, I think these guys need a pork consultant. There are so many different options for bacon but how they are cooking it is just not right. Maybe it's just me. I don't like my bacon well done so maybe next time I will communicate more clearly. All in all a great experience for under $6. I will be back!! read more

Went there last night for dinner. What I liked was the fish, not too greasy and tasted good. What I didn't like was * services was impersonal - didn't offer water, didn't check in if I wanted a refill on my pop or if the food was ok. * fries were bland, maybe not that fresh. Could have been frozen * garlic cheese bread was almost like a hot dog bun opened up with cheese and garlic (over priced) * washrooms was super small (two small for more then one person - should be a private washroom) and smelled like bleach. At least wait till the restaurant is closed before throwing bleach down everywhere. Not running back there anytime soon. Maybe next time I'll do take out. Little known fact - I worked at a fish & chips place the summer before high school and even a few summers into it. So believe me when I say I know a good piece of haddock when I see one. Halibut House is a newly opened franchise at the Shopper's World plaza at Danforth and Vic Park. I came here with a friend at his suggestion, and to be honest, I was a little hesitant. It was a chain I had never heard of, and a quick search on Yelp yielded the Kingston Road location sitting at a measly two stars with only a couple of recommended reviews. The plaza is also not exactly a hotspot for great eats or even shopping. Plus, since when has fish and chips at places like Jack Astor's or Milestones EVER hit a home run? I was well prepared for disappointment. But stepping inside, Halibut House is a surprisingly spacious and bright resto with cozy vinyl booths. The interior is tiled blue and white, with a sort of marine theme that reminds me of First Nations art. I also thought the tiled ceiling was ingenious - even though you can see the kitchen from the dining area, the open space doesn't get smoky or greasy at all. Onto the good stuff - we both got the haddock special, which is offered on Sundays and Mondays. Unbeatable value at $7 for a hefty filet and a huge serving of thick-cut chips with traditional oil & vinegar slaw. I actually couldn't put much of a dent in the latter, and sent my friend home with nearly a full-sized takeout container of chips. He didn't have a problem with his portion, so they were clearly pretty darn decent. The fish was flaky and perfectly fried. Malt/white vinegar/salt & pepper are table side, and the waitress brings squeeze bottles of other condiments like tartar sauce and ketchup. That's right, a SQUEEZE BOTTLE of tartar sauce. The last two take outs have been very greasy and under cooked, also the mushy peas were very runny compared to the other times.
