Halibut House is a place that specializes in our beloved fish & chips. A small establishment from Port Perry that grew over the past decade to become a large fish & chip franchise in Ontario. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but inspired our fish appetite! Haddock & Chips order had an impressively sized fish fillet piece along with plenty of thick cut fries underneath. For takeout, we were peeved that they used pre-packed condiments for tartar sauce rather than provide some homemade or dine-in option. But the fish itself was golden & crunchy on the outside with pleasant flaky fillet texture inside. Well worth it, and they even offer $11 Sun/Mon specials. As for the Halibut & Chips, we were sadly underwhelmed by our first attempt. The fish is firm, mild in flavour with perhaps a little bit of sweetness. It tasted rather bland. We may have to try it fresh to see if it's an acquired taste. Otherwise we'll stick to cod/haddock. The fries accompanying both were a tad soggy but did a bit better with a splash of S&P. To be honest, we've had comparable fish & chips elsewhere. We've even started to rely on our own air fryer at home to cut some grease. I hadn't had fish and chips in a while and only recently noticed that Halibut House opened up recently near the Walmart by Vaughan City Hall. The restaurant is spacious and is currently open for dine-in. However, I came in to order for take out. There are specials on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday. On Sunday and Monday, the haddock and chips are $11. On Wednesdays, the cod and chips are $12. After you order and pay, you're given a pager and can go and wait in your car until the pager goes off. I observed that the wait staff here and the cashier know how to wear masks. The cooks on the other hand do not and there was one kitchen staff who walked into the main restaurant area with a chin mask. The food was piping hot. It fogged up my car window as I drove home. I didn't realize how big the haddock was going to be until I got home. It's huge. It was perfectly battered. The fish was flaky but also juicy. The fried batter was light and crispy. The fries on the other hand were a little soggy. But I really enjoyed the fish, which was the star of the show. read more

New location freshly opened Feb 8. There is a large parking lot with easy access to the store. The staff here is very friendly even with the rush of dine in and take out. I took advantage of the BOGO half price fish and chips (no seafood plates) and tried the Halibut and Chips. The fish and fries were freshly prepared and well cooked. The fish was moist with a nice crunch batter and the fries were double fried for a nice crunch exterior with a fluffy centre that paired perfectly with malt vinegar. The staff be it front of house to the chefs at the back crafting up the yummy goodness are masters of their craft. I don't know how this place is up and running. They scam prices and food is bland. I came to pick up fish and chips for my lunch break. Customer service is not welcoming. Server did not greet as you walk in. When it came to settling the bill I asked why the price is not the 'everyday special' as it says on their Menu online. She said it's only a specific fish. In this case they should be clarifying and asking customers on the phone. They ASSUMED my order. I did not ask for a specific fish. I ordered 'fish and chips'. Food did not have any salt. This location has really good fish and chips... we've come here a few times already because of their food and good service. Not too salty and portions are generous! I usually order the fish and chips + salad and the salad comes in a deep bowl with very fresh ingredients, they do not cheap out on what they give you. The restaurant is clean and spacious with tables spaced apart. Their washroom is very tidy and clean, soap and paper towels are refilled, floor is dry which is a good reflection of the hygiene in the restaurant. Food is great here! First time we did take out and found that the Signature Halibut was a little too greasy/oily. Last night we dined in and had the Signature Haddock with fries and Grilled Halibut with salad and fries and the Breaded Clams. All was good but the grilled halibut was a little too dry, maybe because it was a thinner slice of fish than I expected it to be. Next time we will only order one serving of fries. This fish & chips is part of small chain. This new location in Vaughan is too far for most Toronto residents and if it had been closer to Yonge or Bathurst would likely see a rise in visitors.I'm sure their marketing team look at rent costs versus traffic flow of consumers but due to the location it is too far to visit more often.That is a shame as like it's downtown location they make a wonderful meal. They also give you a pager that notifies you when your order is ready for take out.If they are going to open a second location East of this one they are well positioned to grab a huge chunk of business from other places.Most people enjoy a good order of fish & chips.Malt vinegar, ketchup & utensils are available.They have a breakfast menu as well.I have been there opening day plus 6 more times.I just wish they were closer to me. read more
