Cod and chips (top), Haddock and chips (bottom) + beer from Old Flame Brewery and Amsterdam Brewhouse
    Michelle L.

My friend's cousin from the UK recommended this place to me, so I had to visit! I came here with my boyfriend. He got the cod and chips, and I got the haddock and chips. The portions were huge. He's never had fish and chips before, but he loved it! They had craft beer from our favourite local breweries too. There is parking a quick walk away in the back.

A most excellent serving of cod and chips

It was a long journey to get there today as there is a winter festival going on in Newmarket on Main street and it's temporarily closed so we had to walk a little to get there. Good news it was worth the trek to get there. The restaurant was humming but we were directed to a nice booth by a lovely and most accommodating waitress. We ordered a beer and our meals. The beer came over in good time as did our lunch. The beer was frosty and our meals were delivered hot and plentiful. I had the shrimp and chips which were enormous and succulent and my friend had the cod and chips that as I was told were flaky and delicious. Win Win today as i was most pleased with the service, the food and the company. Big shout out to Sam for the pics and the amiable dining experience. I will return very soon.

It's always a treat coming here. Their fish and chips are great- massive portions. I always get full but happy to bring the rest home for leftovers. Their coleslaw is good too!

Another great meal here ! My go to place for fish and chips in Newmarket. The halibut is exquisite, thick and juicy and a solid white fish (so firm is the halibut). Ordered the family pack 4 pieces halibut, 2 fresh cut fries, 4 coleslaw and 4 tartar. Enough said about the halibut, Exquisite! Fries are great, nice homemade freshly cut, coleslaw is creamy and the tartar is homemade, not the Heinz's packages. As well tartar should be at any fish and chip establishment. Definitely recommend checking this place out for your Friday fish cravings.

    Ready to dive in!

My husband and I drove all the way from Texas to Toronto to eat at Chip+Malt!!! Ok just kidding. Seriously though, we did drive to Canada but to stay with family for the holidays and this was the one restaurant we just had to come visit in New Market. We not only enjoyed eating the delicious food but the customer service is so friendly and welcoming. We got to meet with the owner who was also very pleasant and we enjoyed our conversation. This was one of the very 1st restaurants my husband took me to when visiting Canada before we got married and I can still say that this is still a magical place today.

Had the cod and chips. It was a big portion of cod, chips & coleslaw (so it wasn't just fish & chips). The fried stuff was very fragrant. They have the largest selection of fish I've seen at a fish & chips shop: cod, haddock, pollock, halibut and orange roughy. There's also a halloumi cheese option for the vegetarians. The cod was fresh enough & the batter was light & crispy. The chips were crispier than at other fish & chip places - authenticity isn't always a good thing for food, since British chips tend to be soggy! The fried stuff was served with a lot of tartar sauce & it had a creamy nice tang. It was also served in a cardboard box, not wrapped in (news)paper. While less traditional, this made it more practical to eat. Unfortunately the coleslaw was disappointing. While crisp & fresh it was missing something, tasting flat.

The portion size is like a food challenge ! Needless to say , we lost but left absolutely stuffed. Will most definitely be back here ! Stopped in before heading to the Newmarket drive in movie theatre only about 10 min away. Excellent service on a side patio off of main st. Loved the quality of the food and cleanliness of the restaurant ( went inside to use the restroom). I should mention the greens of the Ceasar were crispy and fresh. Although the dressing was a little too mayonnaisey. More anchovy flavour would have been nice as well as softened croutons ( they were too tough). Otherwise we both got the haddock meal and loved every bite. I had the onion rings as a side and they were perfectly crispy but not oily ! 5/5 for everything. Best fish and chips I have had.

I love to support locals, especially when it's a gem I recently discovered Chip & Malt which is known for their fish and chips. They focus on using ethically sourced, and fresh local ingredients for their dishes. I ordered the Halibut + Chips and was surprised about the size, as well as how tender and juicy the piece was as well. It's really what you get; a piece of fish covered in crispy batter without any added salt & spices to it. The extra flavoring would come from the in-house tartar sauce which is included in your order. Personally I enjoyed it as is since I really wanted to experience the taste of the perfectly cooked Halibut. Lastly I didn't feel too greasy eating it as their batter wasn't oily at all. I would definitely recommend visiting them if you're around, or willing to make a trip up north

Visited just before another lockdown All safety measures and protocols were in place and even exceeded requirements, our server Robin never removed her mask at any time during our visit I had the cod & chips- side gravy and PIC had cod & onion rings so we could share both, everything was delicious, clearly super fresh and made in house Friendly and attentive service, highly recommend We'll be back

    Miss Lady ..

I don't see what the big deal is about this place. The service was super quick. The cod was nice and moist. Although the fries were homemade and plentiful, they were very dry and difficult to eat no matter how much malt I put on top. Further, the coleslaw was lacking flavour. I personally would not return if I had a choice.

The restaurant is brightly lit with lots of natural sunlight, the decor is a mix of elegance and rustic at the same time. It's got an open and inviting feel. Our server was fantastic - very patient with a large group like ours, able to tell us right off the bat what is and is not customizable, recommendations of when to order to ensure flow works out. Food: Charbroiled octopus - one of my favorite dishes I tried - perfectly cooked, has a nice char, good meaty bits but not chewy, has a really nice chili oil on it. I can not stress how much I recommend getting this if you enjoy seafood. 5/5. Chorizo appetizer - comes out in a little pig plate with an open flame underneath. The chorizo itself is good with a nice spice, dense meat. The best part of this dish (IMO) is the spiced apple sauce on the side that cuts the richness of the sausage with a sweet and tangy apple and a little spice kick. 4.5/5. Bread - fresh baked bread with butter, a pumpkin jam and cheese. Everything on that plate works so well together. I definitely recommend this as an all rounding pleasing appetizer - 5/5. Beets - the beets were fresh with a vibrant orange colour. The apple, walnut and goat cheese all work together. I do wish this dish had a bit more but it works. 4.5/5. Brussel sprouts - amazing deep fried brussel sprouts - makes me want to always deep fry them for life. The spicy harissa sauce works well with the sprouts. Crunchy peanuts on top add both a texture and nuttiness that is refreshing to the brussel sprouts. 5/5. Oysters - super fresh, absolutely delicious without any condiments needed. Loved them. 5/5. Paella - this is definitely large enough for 2 people to eat so consider sharing unless you have a monster appetite. As with all their plates, it is beautifully constructed. The shrimp are huge and meaty. Mussels are plentiful, lots of chorizo and bay scallops. The rice has that really nice briny seafood flavor from the broth. It was just a teeny tiny bit overly salty to my taste but it's cut with the dollops of sour cream. Has this really nice low level heat that just works without burning your mouth. 4.5/5. Lamb sirloin - great crust on the lamb and cook as well. Flavorful sear and crust on the lamb with a soft tender meaty interior. Can't go wrong with- 5/5. Branzino - delicious flaky and light with a great grill. If you're interested in a fresh fish, this is a good choice. Was a special on the menu - 5/5. Prices: Fine dining pricing but you get the excellent food, service and experience for the price.

We started the meal with peach with baratta salad which was so refreshing. Next we got the grilled octopus which was nicely charred but I have to say the amount of octopus is pretty small for a dish that's almost $30. When I saw paella on the menu, I knew I had to get it. It was topped with seafood including 2 giant prawns, clams, mussels and sausages. The rice was cooked perfectly with bold flavours. However I felt that the seafood was slightly undercooked. We told our server and he asked the kitchen to cook us new shrimps right away. I would def recommend sharing this entree as the portion is enough for 2. We finished our meal with an affogato, which is no longer on the menu but our waiter kindly let us order. We loved the decor and vibe at this restaurant! She mentioned that the burger is AMAZING (it is) and the tater tots are to die for (also true). The monte cristo sandwich consists of shrimp, capocollo, swiss cheese and challah french toast. I didn't know what to expect but it was DELICIOUS! Like revolutionary because I didn't expect the sweetness from the french toast to compliment the salty meat so well. The shrimp added a bit of flavour but lots of texture. Perfect brunchwich (first coined here by me, probably not). The double cheese burger was dirty and greasy and amazing. American cheese, bread & butter pickles, onions, dijonnaise, ketchup on a toasted sesame challah bun. Tater tots are everything you wanted in tater tots. Crispy outside with a potatoey, fluffy and savory inside. Go and enjoy.

Fried Rice Noodle with bbq pork (they were out of normal pork): scrambled egg sauce was unusually eggy. There was a nice smoky flavour & the noodles were slightly fried. The toppings were simple with only egg, pork & green onion. Egg bean curd and gluten in sa cha sauce on sizzling hot plate was not on a sizzling plate. It tasted decent with a very slight off-spicy flavour from the shacha sauce. I didn't notice any gluten. There was pineapple, red pepper, green pepper & shallots in the sauce. They slightly increased the price and changed the menu for the combo sets which is fine in this inflationary environment however did anyone also notice that they exclude the rice from the combo sets too? I made a take out order of the combo set and went in to pick up (which they were late and it's not even half full in the restaurant on a Sat night). After paying, I waited for my order. And when the order was almost ready, suddenly a staff told me, rice is no longer included in the combo sets, and asked if I want to order rice. I was like wtf I have never heard of Chinese combo sets that exclude rice and more importantly shouldn't they ask me earlier if I want to pay extra for the rice when I placed my order? So while the food here isn't bad with quite a lot of different options, such experience made me wonder how honest they are when they run this restaurant. Probably wouldn't go again. On the food itself: - salt and pepper deep fried fish was on the combo sets before but not anymore and that's the dish I liked the first time. Flaky bite size fish fillet that can satisfy your desire for deep fried food. - gai lan satay beef. No satay taste at all. - sweet and sour pork, pretty good with fresh pineapple and not too too thick batter. - curry, like the taste of it, and the beef brisket was tender but prefer some more other veggies such as bell peppers and carrots. - bitter melon with pork ribs. Bitter melon too thick so it's slightly on the bitter side. - beef with mushroom and onions. Not enough wok hey.

We came on a very cold winter day and the upper floor (main dining area) was noticably warmer. We were seated right away without a reservation. Our server was very upbeat, friendly, and accommodating to some of our customization requests (e.g. certain salad ingredients and dressing on the side, substitute shrimps with extra scallops, etc.). Food came out relatively quick (there were only 1-2 other occupied tables when we were there). Service was excellent. The music playing in the background was a combination of hip-hop, R&B, and jazz. The dining room had a casual and relaxed ambiance, with a somewhat dark lighting and fake candle on every table. We got the Seafood Platter for 2, but there was enough food for 4-5 people. It came with 2 big pieces of salmon, a whole "market fish catch of the day" (not sure what fish it was, but it tasted like swordfish and was very tasty), 2 lobster tails, crab legs, baby octopus, squid / calamari, scallops, shrimps (which we opted to change for extra scallops), and some microgreens on top for garnish. We could choose to have the seafood grilled, fried, or a mix of both - we chose the grilled option. All of the seafood came on a long wooden board, with lots of butter at the bottom (I wish they didn't put any / so much butter!). The Seafood Platter came with a side of grilled vegetables (rapini, asparagus, carrot) and baby potatoes. We added on an extra plate of the grilled vegetables and potatoes, as well as Arugula Salad. The variety of the seafood in the Seafood Platter was excellent. They were very generous with portion size. Everything was really tasty and I loved the charred grill mark, especially on the scallops. They pre-cracked the crab legs and lobster tails, making it easier to eat. The crab and baby octopus came as a surprise (to our delight!), because the menu didn't say that the platter would come with those 2 types of seafood. The "market fish catch of the day" came as a whole fish and de-boned (just the filet and skin). I liked this more than the salmon, which was cooked well done. This restaurant lives up to its name - excellent place for seafood.

I started with the yogurt parfait, it was like 5 small scoops of warm yogurt with a sprinkle of granola and maybe 3/4 of a strawberry with 4 blueberries. After getting that I knew the steak and eggs I ordered was not going to be great. As expected, the steak was for sure sous vide before slapping it on the grill given that it was mushy in texture and when I asked the waitress before ordering if she could cook mine more rare she told me that the chefs make all the steaks at medium (that shouldve been a red flag that she didnt ask how she would like my steak cooked). It came with unseasoned home fries and 2 pieces of the driest toast with no butter? We asked our waitress for some condiments and butter and she completely forgot and we had to ask her a few times before she came back with just butter (we scoured the restaurant for some ketchup). The sunny side eggs that came with it was mediocre, but how can you mess up eggs, right? The dessert I ordered the creme brulee which was the best part of the meal (which isnt saying much). My brother also ordered the creme brulee but his tasted completely different... this already tells me how inconsistent the kitchen and staff are. The whole meal costed us $455 and this included the autograt of 20%. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This was for 6 mothers day brunch meals and a kids pasta. The service was non existent and the food was absolute trash. My 9 year old niece couldve made a better meal with her eyes closed. With $455 we couldve had a lobster dinner for a family of 6. There really is no difference of getting robbed for real and eating at this place, you both lose money and get absolutely nothing out of it.

I think they should probably add in a QR code to make an order directly per seat if it's going to be like that. It took a good 20 minutes before they recognized me and I was trying to get eye contact/make an order. It also took a while for the steak to come. What sort of irked me was that the server offered the two parties on either side of ours the bread, but did not offer us the same. It also was a bit awkward when the steak was faster to come than the water itself. I asked the person giving the steak to provide the water. I guess this was an off time.
