Cozy, Flavorful, and Absolutely Worth It! Stopped by The Halfway Café for a quick bite and left completely satisfied! I ordered a cup of chili and the Halfway Reuben.. and let me tell you, both were absolute hits. Mind you, I am from maryland and just visiting boston for the weekend and needed to find a good food spot for a sandwich! The chili was rich, hearty, and had just the right amount of kick. It tasted homemade, like something simmered with care! As for the Halfway Reuben? Easily one of the best I've had. The corned beef was tender and flavorful, the sauerkraut was fresh (not soggy!), and the marble rye was toasted to perfection. The dressing tied it all together in the most delicious way. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff were super friendly and attentive without being overbearing. This place gives off strong neighborhood gem vibes. If you're anywhere near Massachusetts and haven't tried The Halfway Café yet, do yourself a favor and go. I'll definitely be back! read more

The Halfway Cafe is a West Roxbury staple. A go to place for consistent, good quality food that you can trust any day of the week. I like coming in when there's a game to watch on the flat screen TVs that surround the restaurant walls. It is a small restaurant with a townie feel - I can tell they have a lot of regulars that come in (I may be becoming one of them). When dining in, they serve fresh popcorn. Sometimes the popcorn is salty but I guess it depends who makes the batch that day. I've ordered the clam chowder a few times, it's good and rich. I recommend the burgers / sandwiches and any of their drinks. read more

Stopped in for early dinner on a Sunday with friends. They food they ordered was not impressive at all but my husband and I both got chicken sandwiches and they were fabulous. He got Korean flavored and I got hot and sweet. Two big pieces of chicken on each sandwich so we only ate half each. So disappointed! My wife had a small stick in her food. They were not very apologetic or sympathetic. Our waitress never came over again after we pointed out the stick. Waitstaff was rude after that. I also questioned getting a double order of boneless wings and receiving only 1 dipping sauce. Have been going for over a year now and they always served 2 sauces. They raised their prices and now charge extra for 2 sauces. They were so rude about it when I questioned it. Been a fan of the Halfway for many years. The location in Watertown we have visited a lot. We now frequent the Dedham location A few months ago I ordered my usual, steak tips med RARE and double onion rings. When the tips came out they were med WELL. I ate them blaming the over cooked tips as a hiccup on the cook. The second time I went in, the same thing med. well on all the smaller pieces and medium on the two larger pieces. I ate them too! The third time I ordered all the pieces were well done. I returned them to the chef and our server agreed they were over cooked. I waited on a new batch of tip, eating most my onion rings by then, and the tips that came out the second time were all small pieces...and were again well done. How did the chef think tiny pieces of tips were going to come out med rare was beyond me so I returned them and ate some of my wife's handouts. The server did adjust our bill but I was still hungry. It's been a couple of months since the last experience and we miss the servers smiling faces BUT TIPS are my go to at the Halfway and I don't enjoy leaving a restaurant hungry so have not returned. EVERYBODY has blamed everything from short staff, to overcooked food! To food quality on Covid, but with todays inflation we still want what we are paying for and want it RIGHT. To do this my wife and I go to places that still serve food cooked right. RIGHT is what we expect. May try again but not on a night I am starving! read more

We've been going to the Halfway for over 30 years. It was always at least a 30 minute wait on a Saturday evening. Not anymore. You can walk right in and get a booth. That's because it's not the same place. The menu is much more limited, the portions are smaller, and prices are higher. Got the fried chicken dinner. The menu and the waiter both said that the breading was panko, which I'm used to seeing in larger, more distinct breadcrumb pieces. That's a petty point, because the outside was golden and crispy, the inside was moist and juicy, and the serving was just-right salty and large enough for two meals. The mashed potatoes were creamy, with just enough chunks to tell it was - what, Red Bliss? The stuffing managed to be both moist and light; neither one was pasty, even with a solid, smooth gloss of gravy. The broccoli was cooked to a bright green, with a generous helping of butter sauce. I've always thought cranberry sauce a bit oddly sweet to serve with such food, but it goes well enough with the rest. The table I used was wobbly, and those who bring children along to dinner during game day at what is, in effect, a sports bar with a great kitchen, should not be surprised at what vocabulary they learn. There are outdoor tables, quite nice on a sunny day, if that helps. I'm told there's better parking in the back of the building - the street-side spaces are unnerving. Yummy food when the order is correct! Picked up to-go that My hubby ordered: boneless wings, half buffalo half plain, with fries and Caesar salad. Salad was perfect, wings were buffalo and some pink sauce...not a clue what that was, and fries were orange bc they were sweet potato. lol fine for me but my DH doesn't do sweet potato fries. We went back to get the correct order. No apology on the phone when we explained the issue, but they did make the order over. I have fond memories of the Halfway from decades past. Revisiting it lately, it was simply OK- the turkey tips I remember adoring were only just fine (I think the Dogwood's turkey tips have much more flavor). The rest of my meal was OK- the wing tips in Cafe sauce were on the weirdly artificial and sweet side, although I actually didn't mind that (kind of like a char sui-type flavor), my mashed potatoes with skin on were pretty good, but I wasn't a fan of the seasonal veg choice (but that's just my personal preference). My husband did not care for his steak tips at all, although the side sweet potato fries were decent. So, mixed bag- not terrible, but lots of room for improvement, and not my go-to for either turkey tips or wing tips. read more

I come here once a year and it's always quite decent. Last nite I got the steak and turkey tip combo with mashed and sautéed veggies. Everything was great, moist tips and nice fresh veggies. Friend got a patty melt and onion rings. Pear sangria was fine. Nice service but my one complaint was it was freezing for half the time we were there. Last week, I stopped by on Thursday night for Stump Trivia. Upon entering the restaurant, you walk right into the bar. It's a very small restaurant, but somehow they ended up making room for 10 of us. The food was delicious and everyone was pleased. I like that they had an option to get smaller portions called, "Ray's Way". I got the "Ray's Way" turkey tips and still had enough for left overs the next day. I spit out what I was chewing to find I was chewing on a metal staple that was somehow mixed into my slider. I refused to eat the rest of my order. How could a bent metal staple end up in food? Until recently, the only Halfway Cafe I had dined at was the Canton location but recently decided to try this location. I've been a couple of times and have had the wings, onion rings, patty melt, reuben and the mac and cheese; the he mac and cheese was bland (by my standards, there are salt-free ways to add flavor) but everything else has been good. It's kind of small inside and locals, not sure I would be comfortable dining in here. read more

I walked in with my family 3 adults and 1 child in a car seat and was denied the most accommodating seating area which was available. We were told we needed one more person. Got the 2lbs of Wings(bone in), Caesar Salad, and Potato dippers. The Potato Dippers were home fries. Which were pretty lackluster. The Caesar salad was fine as far as salads go. The wings smelled great, but the taste didn't match. The Buffalo Honey BBQ and World Famous Cafe sauces tasted the same to me. They weren't bad, but it was hard for me to differentiate them. Buffalo tenders: Excellent..buffalo flavor wasn't over the top and small size was just enough for two as an appetizer. Halfway Chicken Sandwich: tasted great, sauce is interesting and not tangy..bit messy but that's okay. Chicken was super moist. Fries were horrible..no flavor what so ever?? Pulled Chicken Wrap: Not sure why this is even on the menu, the wrap as a whole was just super bland! Chopped up chicken that didn't seem fresh with onions and smoked cheese..nothing seemed to have any hint of flavor, a very boring dish! I don't recommend it at all! Came here last night with a friend. Better than the average chain, but nothing that has me rushing back. The fried pickles were above average and the spicy chicken sandwich (called triple h...or something ending in h) was pretty good. My friend got the cranberry chicken sandwich which was very blah. It seems like they have Stump Trivia on Thursdays...if I lived in the area I would check it out. The best part of the whole experience was the service. AMAZING. As a former bartender, and a 30 year old, I have learned that you cannot pick and choose who you ID in a group of people who all look young. If you card 1 person, but not the other who look the same exact age (and are the same age) you have to be fair. My boyfriend lives locally and we sometimes come here and we have never been ID. Well tonight the waitress chose to ask me for my ID but not my boyfriend who looks also under 30. She asked me for my order and when I told her I did not have my wallet on me she refused me, and that's fine, I understand she needs an ID. But she then asked my boyfriend what he would like and did not card him. He looks easily under 30. That is bad business practice. I see people come in and out of here often and never get hassled. If you are going to be a responsible bartender, be fair about it. I would hate to see any place get in trouble for bad business practices when these things are easily avoidable. This is a friendly pub that is also uniquely suited for families, including those with young children. Popcorn (unlimited) at the table is an added plus. Very good beer selection. Their Monday special (cheeseburger, fries, lettuce and tomato for $5.99) is an unbelievable deal, especially considering the size of the burger (a full 8 oz) and its super delicious flavor. We also tried the fish and chips, which were perfectly fine but nothing to rave about. We've been there many times and will return again and again for sure. read more

Always a great meal to be had here. I typically go to the one in Dedham. Great popcorn. The best steamers, make sure to order them with beer and garlic. Very good buffalo wings. The steak tips are excellent with the mashed and grilled vegetables. The coke is passable- I'd like to see a little more carbonation. All in all always delicious and satisfying. One of my favorite places. I live about a 5 minute walk from the Dedham location and usually get take out on Friday's. Great food that won't break the bank. Take out is easy if you know to walk to the back corner so you can exit the side door if there is a crowd that makes you uncomfortable. I used to come here every week for trivia when I lived in Dedham, but that was over 5 years ago so I was a little wary about going back and being disappointed. I don't know what I was worried about. It was just as good as I remember it. I love the free popcorn that they refill without hesitation. They have a classic pub menu, with great prices, but what makes it different is that for a lot of the dishes you can opt to get a smaller portion. With all the free popcorn, this is a great option. Lots of TVs around the room so it's a good place to grab a beer and some grub and watch the game. The biggest drawback is the parking, but supposedly they will help you find a spot in the back, I just haven't ever figured that out. read more

I thought Halfway was terrible the first time I went in 2010. I had a pathetic, bland chicken sandwich and swore I would never return. Things change. Halfway is one of the few restaurants I regularly frequent. I've found several things on the menu that never disappoint: - STEAMERS: A New England specialty I also rejected upon trying for the first time but have come to love, especially the way Halfway does them in the beer and garlic. (They have become seasonal, however. Summer only. The greatest tragedy.) - Buffalo wings: Not vinegary with creamy mild bleu cheese dip. - Steak tips: Teriyaki or plain, doesn't matter, they are remarkably good for the price. - Vegetable skewers: Roasted perfectly, not raw or mushy. - Garlic green beans: Really garlicky! The point to emphasize here is that I can always count on Halfway for a tasty, hearty meal at a reasonable price. The 8 for 8 menu is great but I personally can't stray from my tried and true favorites. The Dedham location is much better than Canton. Service is fast and friendly -- waitresses check in enough without being overbearing. Dedham is smaller than Canton and can get busy and loud on game nights but we've never encountered a long wait for a table. Halfway doesn't pretend to be anything fancy, so I hesitate to give it 5 stars, but for what it is, it really can't be beat. read more

Don't listen to "Phantom Gourmet"'s Andleman brothers, this place is average at best! That show has more corruption that Chicago did in the 1930's and will sacrifice any ounce of dignity for a bit of advertising money. The Halfway Cafe is average. The food is average, the prices are average and the service is average. It always reeks of popcorn which I find utterly annoying. They always give people free popcorn. I don't want it, yet I still get it. I'd rather not have it at all if it meant not having to smell it while I'm trying to eat. I've been there multiple times due to it's proximity with a nearby golf driving range and every time I've been there... well, I haven't been completely disappointed, but not completely amazed either. I just wish they tried a bit harder... The food is just so basic and blend. It's sad really because they have a great location and there's a ton of street parking. What a shame read more
