I will always come here to eat. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner for more than reasonable prices. On my second visit, the guy already remembered me and knew what I wanted. This place is for local people who live in porter square, and respect a sense of community. So to the bloggers and food critics of yelp, stand clear because this spot is for real people. Nothing has ever been particularly great, but it's always good enough, cheap, and the people who work there seem happy to make whatever you want whenever you want. I have been looking for a good delivery pizza restaurant around this area since I moved here 4 months ago. After several disappointments, such as generally bland pizza, limited delivery hours and being closed on Sundays, I stumbled across Half Shell. The pizza was really great! It seemed fresh, wasn't too greasy and had plenty of toppings. It was reasonably priced- we ordered a large pizza with 3 toppings (one of which was artichokes), 2 sodas and seasoned fries and it was just over $20. And, the fries were fantastic! While they probably came from a bag, they arrived crispy and warm, not like your typical soggy delivery oreder fries. I will definitely be ordering again! read more

I used to live at the end of Exeter St and would often stop by the Half-Shell for a sub after school. My favourite was the pastrami sub - though I'd also get a "cheese steak" inspired option at times. I'd always do take out and the service was fast. I love this place. It's unpretentious with a helpful staff and affordable, yummy food. I order the garden salad and ask them to sub the greens with spinach and it is delicious and healthy. The portions are huge and they are open late. In the winter, I live on their chicken soup. So good. I sometimes order two and save one for later. read more

Lemme just start with the breakfast basics: The simple bacon, egg & cheese bagel. I swear that's ALL there is to it, but for some reason the bagels from here taste like heaven!!!! i made the mistake of getting a bacon egg and cheese bagel from Dunkin Donuts yesterday, and in comparison it tasted of dying dreams and zombie gizzards. Half-Shell is GOOD y'all. everything is made fresh everyday... delivery is free, and portions are plentiful! i hope they can upgrade their facilities soon though (chairs, table, floor and TV) - a place that serves food this good deserves a much better dining atmosphere to draw in even more customers. read more

I've been working in Cambridge for a few years now and my boss always ordered food from here when treating for lunch. Today my boss was off (she normally orders) and she asked me to place an order for the entire office on door dash. I've used door dash many times with 0 issues so I figured today would be no different- wrong. I placed the order at 11am (on door dash) to give myself PLENTY of time for them to arrive. 3 pizzas, 3 salads, a great tip and delivery fee. It was pricey. Once the order was 20 minutes late I called half shell. The man I spoke to explained to me that our door dash delivery driver showed up the half shell and when he was told it was going to take some additional time for the order to be complete the driver said "I can't wait that long" HE LEFT AND THEN DIDN'T CALL ME TO TELL ME. Half shell was absolutely amazing about it - even though it was not their fault at all. I cancelled with door dash and reordered with half shell. They completed our order with rapid speed and delivered it promptly while it was still steaming hot. The salads weren't put with the pizza which I always appreciate because the steam can wilt the lettuce so the salads were super fresh and crunchy. He supplied us with napkins, plates, utensils, I didn't even have to ask for them! I will literally never order through door dash ever again. That was so unprofessional and rude not to call and give me a heads up. Thank you half shell for saving the office lunch!!! read more

I came across this place by accident. It was raining out and I needed to take cover. I'm so glad I found it! Parking can be hard to find, have trouble getting a space half the time because most spots are for residents and meters get taken quickly. Ordered the meatball, which was ok, I've had better elsewhere. Now the good-love the mom pop vibe and they make food to order. Their gyros are GREAT! Most places use freezer meat and/or pork. Their gyros are non-pork and fresh from the spittle. Wish they'd pop up in google searches for gyros, I would have found this place much sooner and not travel to Needham area and fairs for non-pork gyros! They are open after 10 (good food for late night) but closed on Sundays, which is when I often want to go ;). What a find-great place for Greek/diner food. read more

I have to update this, having previously given this place 5 stars. I'm a regular customer (correction: a PREVIOUS regular customer), and went in recently to pick up a salad for lunch. Not only was I overcharged, but, when I pointed this out, I was yelled at by the lady operating the cash register. They also neglected to put the cookie I'd asked for in the bag, and I was so flustered about getting barked at that I just walked out. So I paid $11 and all I got was a small salad. Yelled at and ripped off, to boot. Needless to say, that's NOT how you treat loyal customers. Sadly, I won't be making this place a part of my regular routine any more. As much as I prefer supporting local business, and as much as I'd championed this place in the past, I'd rather go to the soulless corporate Panera Bread than risk being treated like that again. read more

Half-Shell is run of the mill Greek style pizza. The crust and sauce are great, the cheese would be excellent except that they mix in a lot of herbs (possibly parsley I couldn't tell) and throw off the flavor of the whole slice. read more

I quite liked this restaurant -- the owners are very nice, the regular elderly patrons are fun to hang out / shoot the breeze with, and the the setting is perfect for a quick sit-down lunch. As a disclaimer, the non-pizza menu items are quite large, which justifies the slightly high pricing -- I'm sure the large portions also help attract the patronage of the Cambridge police, which are often seen chatting in the shop. The only negative that I can think of is the pizza, which was a bit too greasy for me, but, as said below, you can't beat that price for a meal for 4 friends in Porter Square at 10 pm. This is will sound weird. I feel a bit weird saying it, but go here for their salads. You won't get a better salad out of a pizza shop anywhere in Cambridge, or from plenty of sit down restaurants either. I love a good salad when I'm getting my pizza fix and salads from pizza places almost universally suck. Here the salads are made with loving care. The lettuce is lush and green. There's fresh shredded carrots and purple cabbage it them. Fresh enough to make me wonder if they might be shredding and chopping for each salad individually. It's just good. Also, the owners, (especially the woman), are always very nice. The delivery is pretty speedy, usually about 30 minutes (I live a mile away). And the drivers are good natured as well. On the down side, the pizza and calzones are passable but not great in my opinion. But dear God if I'm craving a salad this is the place I order from. read more

This unassuming sub/pizza shop does a lot things very well. Pizza and slices are good and there gyros sandwich is one of the best. They also have some good things off the grill like chicken kabobs and steak tips. Worth a trip if you are in the area. read more

I kind of feel like they should change their sign. For some reason it reminds me of Shell the gas station and instantly puts a bad taste in my mouth. haha.. I came in the other day when I started to feel faint after a really long walk. I was still about 20 minutes from home so I figured I should get some food before passing out. Everything else looked like it was closed/closing and so I tried to decide quick while standing at the counter (no hours in the window). And even though they had the pronunciation for gyro in the front window (yee-ro.. I still always feel like a jerk saying it), I opted for their veggie wrap. The service was quick and the woman working the register was nice. I expect quite a few Harvard kids roll through here because it has that Harvard sticker. I see a mix of Cambridge peoples when I walk by. Nothing too distinguishing about it.. slightly bigger than most hole-in-the-wall joints but it looks completely at home on this strip of Mass Ave. About 9 small tables for 2.. piled up pizza boxes.. assorted chips (and Funions),...sodas (diet A&W but no regular?).. and a big menu (one side completely devoted to pesto). The wrap was just okay. No real flavoring to it. They put it into a spinach wrap (regular wraps available) that was folded over once instead of standard wrap style. Easy for a spatula to pick up without spilling its contents, not so easy for hands. Especially my hands. I took a few bites to rejuvenate then wrapped it up and took it to go. It was still super hot when I got home (nice) so I added some condiments and enjoyed the rest of it. Would I order it again? Meh. I really want to try their homemade chocolate chip cookies and their veggie pizza. It has artichokes! On the pizza! Sounds like a second chance is in order. read more

Always delicious. Their pesto spinach special pizza is to die for. A plain slice of cheese is even great too. The people that work here seem down to earth and like honest good people, which makes me happy to frequent this place. I'm confused about this place...pizza was nasty! I ordered a cheese pizza with green peppers and onions. I like that they put a lot of toppings, but they were just on top of the melted cheese so they fell off easily. I also didn't care for the cheddar cheese mixed in. The outer crust tasted store bought and the inner part of the pie was soggy. Mozzarella sticks were good. Good amount of food for the price, quick delivery, good customer service. read more
