    Meatball grinder, $12
    Curt W.

Continuing my New England area search for the ultimate in a very particular type of comfort food, I focus all of my reviews specifically on the one and only meatball grinder. Yes, grinder, not sub. I find Greek owned pizza joints very interesting and I love the authentic flavors when done right. But streetcorner pizza and sub shops can sometimcut corners, and those are the joints I'm trying to weed out in my search for a delicious meatball grinder. Lucky for me Olympic served up an extremely excellent, well balanced and hearty homemade meatball grinder. Here's my observations: First criteria is to ensure the meatballs are homemade, see my previous reviews where this is an epic fail for some. These. Are. Homemade. And they smartly slice them so they sit better in that very fresh n tasty and perfectly toasted French roll. Next, the sauce and cheese. The provolone was melted perfectly, and had a nice pull, the marinara was slightly sweet, and my only critique would be that it was molten level hot. So if you're like me, and can't wait to dive in, let it cool little bit, so you don't blow away your tongue by burning it. But that's on me. It was so delicious I couldn't help but devour it! And congrats to them for making a fine sandwich. My only other critique is that they don't offer various sizes so you get one big sub for 12 bucks. You can't get a small, medium or large, but that's OK, they're probably just trying to keep their cost down. It was plenty big the divide up for two meals!! As a bonus, I'm also a fan of an authentic Greek style pizza (my first live being from Newington CT and replicated in Bedford MA at Steve's) and this was a very good Greek pie, but not the best I've ever had. They definitely got the cheese blend and the buttery crust, and, of course, all Greek pizzas are made inside those well seasoned pans. The crust was just a little thin for my taste, I prefer Greek pizza to be a little have a little more rise to it and a little better flavor. But - a decent slice for $3. Hopefully I've convinced you to check out Olympic and the whole menu looks amazing and the service is fantastic, they really know what they're doing there and based on the volume of orders going out the door on an average Friday mid-afternoon, not even peak lunch or dinner time yet, speaks to how popular they are in the neighborhood. Going back for their appetizers, salads, and a full pue for sure . Based on previous visits, the steak and cheese subs are also killer.

    Scampi Pasta

Hard pass on pasta - ordered Scampi Pasta with chicken for delivery ($25). The description said it was gourmet italian pasta with white wine sauce, sauteed garlic and lemon juice. Sounded light and refreshing to me. What I received was pasta drowning in butter and cheese, see picture. The cheese reeked and it was off-putting to me, as there's NO mention of cheese in the description and was something I definitely didn't want in my dish. I took one bite and it was overwhelmingly bad and oversalted, I ended up throwing it out after a second bite. Was looking for some lighter fare, not glorified gross mac n cheese. The cheese wasn't just a sprinkle, it was also very much in the sauce. The description is misleading as I've had Italian scampi at many other places that are not covered in cheese and a stick of butter. I ended up wasting $$. Kept to 2 stars because at least the order was completed and delivered quickly, but never ordering pasta from here again!

Very friendly people! 2 slices of cheese and a can of soda for 6 bucks. Pizza was hot, fresh, and pretty good sized slices. I really liked it! Enjoyed while sitting on the bench outside. Will definitely be back.

( no missing pieces) we picked Cheese Pizza and it's so good! Greek style is AMAZING! We got it delivered and it was quick and fast! Not too hot and not too cold! The crust is absolutely thick and the cheese is stretchy like in some commercials.

They clearly use a lot of oil on the bottom of the pans they bake the pizzas in. If you don't like oil, this isn't the place for you. But we *loved* it. I also loved that the pizza toppings went to the edge. This made the vegan cheese crispy along the edges. This approach coupled with the thin (but not too thin) dough felt like Detroit-Neapolitan hybrid. It was the best of both. (And They do offer a Detroit pizza as well, which we will try in the future.) I like my sauce a bit sweeter than their red sauce, but this was only a minor issue. The toppings were high quality, especially the sautéed mushrooms. This place was absolutely worth the drive from Salem to Medford and we will be back. I was disappointed that they no longer make the Carl Called pizza that is listed on their website. It sounds amazing and I hope they bring it back. There are only 4 or so tables so we will avoid this place during peak hours. Alternatively we could order our pizza to go and find an outdoors spot to eat. The dining area was pretty toasty from the ovens. Today was a mild spring day, yet even with the door open, I was getting uncomfortably hot. They also do not have a bathroom for customers, so bear that in mind before visiting. I would love to see this place move to a larger space with more tables. The owner and his staff clearly are passionate about pizza and really know their craft.

Yelp gives this place four stars…read more I give this place four stars. I give Northender's category five stars. Northender is just like 380 places all over the Boston Area. And I love them all. * * * Northender is an East Coast Sub Shop. Sub shops have pizza too. Pizza is good all over the country. Subs are NOT good all over the country. They are usually only good only in the Northeast. Sub shops in Texas are godawful. Sub shops in Michigan and Wisconsin are no great shakes. So when I go to Boston or Connecticut or Rhode Island or -Hallelujah - Philadelphia ... I go out of my way to get at least one real deal sub. One real deal sub and I am happy. If on two days, I can get two real deal subs, I am twice as happy. * * * Most East Coast sub shops are fine. There may be some place that has legendary three standard deviations above the mean subs. I have yet to find one. There is probably a tail end of terrible East Coast sub shops at the bottom end of the distribution. If I have eaten at one, I have repressed the memory. * * * The Northender is controversial. Some Yelpers hate it. Others love it. My local hosts love it. What I had is outstanding. So I am proudly in the pro-Northender camp. Because sub shops also do pizzas and Italian main dish entrees - there may or may not be issues with the other two thirds of the menu. But on subs - these folks are just fine and dandy. I had a meatball parmigiana sub. Those are always good. Even mediocre places in Texas with their cold cuts coming straight from Sysco can sometimes manage a decent meatball sub. * * * Northender lets you get hot grilled green peppers on your meatball sub. Texas has never heard of such a thing. Hot grilled green peppers on any kind of a parmigiana sub? Take plug. Insert into electric socket. All the lights come on. I was bright and shiny for the rest of the day. (And that rest of the day involved a long and miserable trip through Logan airport. I needed that sub as a bright spot on a day that was going to be dreariness up the snoot.) * * * Are the subs in Arlington better or worse than the subs in Lexington, or in Dedham, or in Marblehead or in Southie? I really couldn't tell you. But certain pleasures are like chocolate. They are good unless they are proven otherwise. * * * How are Northenders salads, or the lasagnas of the day or their house special pizza? I have no idea. But just keep those sub sandwiches coming. I am with ya, Northender.

Picked the Salsiccia pizza to split between us (and a poached pear and cannoli for dessert). First, the atmosphere is great! Inviting, with great views of Ball Square and the amazing pizza oven. The pizza arrived at the perfect temperature and quickly (we learned later that a pizza spends less than couple minutes in the oven due to how blisteringly hot it gets). Great flavor and composition to the pizza -- the sausage was extremely flavorful and there was just enough cheese. The dough is top notch, with just the right amount of chew! The poached pear and cannoli were excellent. Not too sweet with sufficient complexity. Very, very nice. My fiancé chatted with the staff and learned more about the location and the pizza oven (I mean, it's just too cool to not ask to see more closely). Great service, fantastic food.
