I made a reservation for 3 for the Friday after thanksgiving (after struggling to find a reservation on thanksgiving day itself) and we ended up having a great dinner! The interior of the restaurant is super clean, modern, bright, giving the whole space a certain fun and energetic vibe. We ordered on an iPad and chose two broths - a mala and a pork bone broth. Both were delicious and flavorful with the mala being quite spicy but still enjoyable. We admittedly got a little carried away with the ordering, but everything was delicious. We tried the dancing noodle, beef tripe, shrimp paste, 4 orders of different meats, grouper fish, tofu, a mushroom assortment, bean curd, konjac noodles, a vegetable, etc. Portions were larger than expected and quality was high across the board. I also loved the selection of sauces in the sauce station but the broths were also flavorful enough that sauces didn't feel as necessary as they do at other hotpot places. Also another thing to note is that the sauce station is an extra charge (around ~$3-4 per person), which we didn't realize at first. Overall, service was great and everything was delicious. Some of my favorites from our meal were all of the meats (lamb, pork belly, wagyu, beef chuckeye), the shrimp paste, dancing noodle, bean curd, and konjac noodles. I'm excited to come back to try their tomato broth and explore more of the menu items, but for 3 people, we definitely did not need to order as much as we did -- especially since we ended up packing up most of the mushrooms and vegetables. Our bill was for sure a bit steep (~$80/person), but for the quality and experience, it felt worth it and now we know to maybe not go too crazy on ordering the whole menu. read more

The best part of this meal was the service. Our waitress was so helpful and taught us the process. She offered us hand wipes, glasses wipes, and aprons to keep our clothes clean. The food tasted good, and the timing of ordering and getting the food is magnificent. The restaurant is HUGE, and you have to expect a wait time when you get here around dinner. We tried four of the soups: tomato, tom yum, bone broth, and the buttery spicy (aka Sichuan-style). In that order, that is also my favourite to least favourite broths (tomato and tom yum are tied to be honest). Next time I go, I would just order the duo soups of tomato/tom yum. The bone broth is REALLY herbally, and I can see that being a hit with my older family. Personally, I would not recommend that one since the taste may be too medicinal/acquired for people who haven't grown up with it, but I did enjoy it. We also got the dancing noodles--of course. It was a little awkward though because the man who actually does the dancing noodles is actually wearing a uniform... but the one we got was clearly someone they pulled from the kitchen and made do it for us or else they felt we would complain. But... it was SO awkward... Usually the noodle man tries to interact with you in some way, or at least laughs... something... but this man was stone-cold the entire time. We sat in silence as he made the noodles dance for us. Which was fine... but still lol... I left disheartened because of the whole secret code stuff though. I've been to other HDLs (both in groups and by myself) and I've never been turned down from doing more than one secret code. I didn't even know this location only lets you do one code per visit. I used that unknowingly for a hand fan.., but what made me upset is that, I feel if I come with a group of three, if only one person is allowed to use a secret code, can't at least all three of us have a hand fan? Why only the one person for a small toy? Had I known that, I would not have used the code on the fan... and I'm still annoyed by it. read more

Never thought I'd see the day where Hao Di Lao opens in AZ since we're pretty behind in everything for a few decades. I've been to a few in California so I understand the expectations of waiting a long time. Their reservations online are closed due to the high traffic so in-person is the only method. I waited about 2 and half hours which isn't really all that surprising tbh (Cupertino is the same). The menu is limited in offerings so maybe go in a few weeks or a month because it's pretty basic options as of now. Id steer clear of wagyu since it's better to sear than to boil that kind of meat lol. read more

My first time to Haidilao and it was amazing! We visited on Saturday around 2 PM and it was packed! We quickly got on the waitlist and walked around local shops for 30 minutes. Before we sat, we were offered water and snacks. I always talk about restaurants needing to predict guests needs before they ask and Haidilao did exactly that- water, snacks, napkins, chopsticks, hair ties, mouthwash, mints, and aprons what more could you need? The food was phenomenal... I don't know why I've never been to the OC location. My favorite broth was the Pork Bone which was aromatic and flavorful, my boyfriend like the Tomyum (i think that was the name). Very herbaceous and gingery! We had read the reviews and were prepared for a great experience. We appreciated being greeted outside the restaurant and told to expect a 15-30 minute wait. Unfortunately there were a number of people smoking in the entry patio area, so we wandered to a nearby store to wait. We didn't get offered the opportunity to wait indoors. When we were seated, the excellent service began. We opted to try 4 different broths (warning - the 4-chili warning should be taken seriously!). Love the aprons, and the choices for broths. We didn't realize beforehand that everything was ala carte, including the sauce bar. On the positive side, you can control the price point. On the other hand, you might not want to pay $70 for Wagyu to put in a hot pot. We tried 2 meat options lamb and ribeye), 1 mixed veggie bowl and 1 noodle option and ran up $120 tab (no beverages). We did get a small discount for joining the loyalty club. The experience was fine quality, but not something we will do on a regular basis. I was a bit disappointed in the dessert options. So I've been to different Haidilao locations in Texas. This place is not that great compared to the ones I've been to. Broths we tried were great and tasted amazing! Tom Yum broth has always been my favorite. Some differences noted were the cheap quality aprons offered here. No hair tie was offered. When ordering items there were no half orders options. Other locations do this and it would help since it is pricey and my husband and I don't always want the same things. Something else I also noticed is there is no privacy in this location. Couple other locations I have been to had privacy walls between tables which was nice! Felt weird looking to my right and left and someone staring at me! Oh and the server was very soft spoken I could not hear a word she said! And did not default giving both of us water and was slow to refill the waters. At the same time didn't want us to grab the pitcher when we tried to refill so that made no sense lol. And also weird that water was placed in a plastic cup instead of the glass cups at other locations. Overall would visit again but there are somethings I wish they would improve on! read more

Haidilao is open in Arizona! We were so lucky to eat dinner on their first day opening. Despite the crowds of people and packed house, their food was the high quality we experienced when we went to their other locations in Seattle and Beijing. The service was the same high quality - so polite and helpful. The waiting area had drinks and an ice cream machine. When we sat down, they brought my kid a toy and child's plate and cup which was really helpful to help her get settled. The food was excellent. The lamb and beef slices, shrimp paste, and fishballs were fresh. Their veggies, mushrooms, and lotus root were equally fresh. Their tomato soup base is always my favorite at every location and it did not disappoint (tiny bit sweet with deep savory flavor). Their sauce bar really well stocked - in addition to the variety of sauce ingredients, I especially enjoyed the tofu pudding, red and mung beans soups! I've been to many locations in Texas and California but this new location in Mesa has definitely disappointed us. Many of the items we ordered never showed up and it became uncomfortable to have to keep track of what came and trying to prove we never received certain items. Another well known feature which usually justifies the high price tag is usually all the 'details' in this chain...for example, hair ties, their signature black/red aprons, the fun toys and all the little items in the restroom. None of that was here, we were lucky to get our food. I hope they do better and make this location as great as the others in in others - really sad this first location in Arizona is not aligning with my experiences at the other location. But we knew this going in so it was not a shock. Inside is a clean restaurant that sort of has a cafeteria vibe to me with dessert bars and sauce bars. Each table has a burner set to keep your broths warm. The broths are amazing and they will refill it as much as you want. It is the meats and veggies where they make their money and they do not give you a ton.
