A good beef chow fun aka 乾炒牛河 is fresh and lots of wok hey and this place does it well at a great price point. For $12 tax included, it includes a drink, is honestly a steal. This place isn't a fine dining Chinese restaurant. It's more of a self-serve, no service location. Order at the desk, find yourself a seat, no tea or water will be served, and help yourself to the napkins. Traditional Chinese buns are also available here. Ample parking. Located in the small complex on the Southwest corner of Kennedy and Denison (same plaza as Cafe Hollywood).

At a HK bakery restaurant

Forgot to take pics before eating.... Oh well. But it's a very standard HK style bakery/restaurant, so if anyone has eaten at a smaller HK street front restaurant you know what to expect. This has been around probably 10+ yrs, and has recently renovated during COVID. Definitely not a classy place, but dining area environment. As a bakery they offer the HK style buns, and a limited lunch breakfast menu. Food is ok, the 4 star is based on the value (4 star value, 3 star food) it's really a 3.5 but rounded up to 4. Lots of local come here for food and take out. So during prime time (weekend lunch hours) seating is usually fully occupied, and very noisy. But people tend to eat and leave fast. I come here once in a while if I want an affordable pineapple buns with butter and milk tea. Unfortunately with the inflation, even this place has increased their price noticably.

This place is a gem! Hai Tang Bakery & Coffee was predominantly a bakery where you could buy Chinese buns and baked goods, but over time it has transformed into a little cafe where you can order extremely cheap combo meals for food that is delicious and in large portions! They serve breakfast items, and lunch and dinner combos as well. One of their most popular items is a pineapple bun with butter and a coffee or tea for $2. So cheap! Their food is always fresh and the service is fast and efficient. When I come in to eat, I always like choosing the first booth seat that is closest to the cash register. This is where all the menus are placed (and where all the action happens). You order from here and then take a seat. Within 5 minutes or so, a little Chinese lady will come out from the swinging kitchen door and call out your order. I like eating at this seat because you can see the other Chinese lady making all the drinks as the orders are being placed. She is so good at what she does and you can tell that she has so many years of experience doing it too. I've been to this place many times and this is the first time I've taken a picture of their food. So unfortunately, on this visit, I only ordered an egg sandwich (so you cannot really tell what the rest of their food looks like). The sandwich was good! I liked how fluffy the egg was in the sandwich. I had previously ordered their breakfast combos, curry chicken with rice, and vermicelli in soup before. They were all really good for the price that you pay. Also, this place is extremely popular. There is never a period of 5 minutes without someone coming up to the cashier and ordering something. It's also part of the reason why I like sitting up so close to the cashier; it's seriously like a show to watch how the lady runs the business. She is super quick and knows all the orders by heart.

Yes, this is real. Yes, Pineapple bun with butter is a traditional Hong Kong café breakfast. Yes, it is typically served with Hong Kong Style milk tea. Yes, I am aware of what you may be thinking. Yes, it is a very thick slice of butter. Yes, the slice of butter is awfully thick and potentially arteries clogging. Yes, I ate it. Yes, it is crispy on the top and soft in the centre. Yes, it is the perfect balance between sweet and savory. Yes, I indulged with no regrets. Yes, it is as evil as it looks. Yes, it is delicious. Yes, I have zero ounce of regret. Yes, the quote "a moment on your lips, lifetime on your hips" is real. Yes, I am willing to live with this in my hips. Yes, life is good. Yes, YOLO holds true! Yes, you only live once!

Now I know where all these retirees goes in the Kennedy and 14th area. They really all hang out at Hai Tang Bakery & Cafe. I never been to a HK Style Cafe that is so buzzing with energy and full of older people.. They are all just having a good time.. And with a coffee/tea and any Chinese buns for $1.50 I don't blame them. The bun though I found them a little doughy and dry.. and bland. However, it is huge in size.. and it can really fill you up! So until then, I guess I will stick with my croissants!

This is one of the best kept secrets for cheap food in Markham. When they first started they were pretty much a bakery only but over the years they became more and more a place where people came for good cheap HK style food. The owners actually also opened the Hai Tang Cafe and Ocean Seafood in Richmond Hill, but this place was where they first started. First of all the Chinese buns are average tasting but cheap and good sized. Where they got me hooked over the years was their set individual menus. Ordering system is basically order and pay at front cashier, try and find a seat and wait for them to call your order (they don't give you a number)...Most of the workers only call out orders in Cantonese and sometimes Mandarin so keep an eye out for your order if you don't speak the dialect:) A variety of HK style meals from scrambled eggs on HK toast, to Beef Brisket on Rice, to Singapore Noodles, this bakery is more well known as a sit down or take out cafe these days. Best of all set menus go from $3 up to only $8 and they all come with a drink like tea, coffee, Horlicks, etc..! Some of my favourites are the Curry Chicken on Rice, Beef Brisket on Rice/Noodle and a Beef Noodle Pickled Soup (Gwai Lam Mai). Seating is very limited and more often then not full especially during morning and lunch rush. A lot of people just do take out as well.

It's definitely a Hong Kong style Bakery & Cafe... You'll get that unpleasant vision if you're not used to the somewhat uncleaned walls/surroundings. I grew up in this environment literally so doesn't bother me and the other HK regulars as you go to this self-serve style Cafe. The Bakery side looks pretty fresh as there's constant patrons coming in and out for both the Bakery and the Cafe. I observed that the Pastry/Baked Buns were still coming out this early afternoon and looking pretty enticing. You can even do your own Plastic SEALING of your items after you put into the bag as they have the Sealer right next to the register while the ladies are busy making Milk Teas. The Cafe is also self-serve as you try to get a Menu somewhere and go to the counter to make the order, although the Prepared Food does get served to your table but it's still not considered waitservice. Around 25 Daily Special items on the Menu, all are under $5.00 makes this a pure HK Cafe you leave with a Fiver easily. Don't even need to tip as you pay first at the register, rather than after your meal. Preserved Vegetable & Pork w/Rice Vermicelli($3.50) is a small bowl but it was filled to the top that would satisfy the normal person. It comes with your choice of Hot Coffee or Milk Tea. I didn't like the Milk Tea at all... Maybe change it to Lemon Tea or Honey Lemon(Add $0.20) next time. 2.5 *Star*

Menu breakfast

Great place for quality food and baked buns. Hong Kong tea and lemon tea. Have been going to this place for years, our favorite in Markham.

The use of traditional elements, paper-cut window designs, red Spring Festival couplets, old-style newspaper wall coverings, and exposed brick adds a strong sense of nostalgia. It feels immersive and intentional, almost like stepping into a countryside home in Dongbei rather than a typical restaurant. The décor isn't fancy, but it's rich in cultural detail and warmth, perfectly matching the hearty, comforting style of Northeast Chinese cuisine. The space is unique and perfect for taking photos. The food here is very generous. We ordered the 4-person set with two side pots. Tomato Braised Beef Brisket and Chicken Stewed with Mushrooms and the portions were huge. Both pots arrived steaming hot and filled to the brim, clearly meant for sharing. The braised beef was rich and hearty, while the chicken pot was comforting and full of flavor, making it perfect for group dining or cold weather meals. Combined with the rustic, traditional décor, it really feels like authentic Northeast Chinese comfort food. The food and atmosphere were excellent, though the service was a bit lacking. I was hoping to find something special on the menu. The Peking duck caught my eye at around $70, but then I discovered that almost everything else was extra--lettuce wraps, stir-fried duck meat, fried rice, and soup. By the time you add the extras, the bill is easily another $50 or more, bringing the total to well over $120. We decided to pass, and judging from the dishes we did order, that was probably the right decision. The hot and sour soup had plenty of heat and tang but lacked depth of flavor and was under-seasoned for my taste. Fortunately, we only ordered a small bowl. The deep-fried tofu was bland and forgettable. The stir-fried shrimp was acceptable but nothing special. The biggest disappointment was the sweet and sour pork. I specifically asked the server to make sure the pork was crispy, but it arrived soft and lumpy rather than light and crunchy. Even the complimentary red bean dessert soup was watery and lacked flavor. Our bill came to about $104 for two people. For the quality of the food, I didn't feel it offered good value. Sadly, after several disappointing visits, I don't think we'll be returning.

The lid on my shredded potato salad wasn't on properly and the sauce leaked through my Fantuan bag. The food gets five stars. Sadly, the lid on my potato salad wasn't securely on the container. I had my food in my insulated bag, so the sauce leaked into the Fantuan bag and my insulated bag. Luckily, my car was fine. As a result, my rating is four stars. I wanted to try a new eatery. I looked at my Fantuan app and noticed He Bei Chinese Cuisine. It had dumplings and snacks that I enjoy, so I said yes to placing a dinner order from this eatery. I ordered these items: - Pork and chive steamed dumplings (large has 14 dumplings) - Tea eggs - Shredded potato salad On Fantuan, when you purchase $15 worth of food, you get the shredded potato salad for a cent. Deal! After placing my order near my home, I drove over to this eatery. The drive was ten minutes. I was given an estimated time of fifteen minutes. It was ready in ten minutes. I had no problem finding this eatery. There was plenty of parking. I pulled into a spot and walked in. I saw the Yubu sign. My heart sank, as I loved the Korean tofu pockets from this joint. I liked seeing places to sit down and eat at He Bei. Nice! A woman behind the counter came over. I said that I had a Fantuan order. She talked to me in Mandarin. I don't understand it, but we were fine communicating with each other in our languages. She pointed out the blue Fantuan bag on the table behind me. I thanked her and wished her a nice day. She said thanks right back. I put my food in my insulated bag. With the leak, I managed to launder the Fantuan bag and clean my insulated bag. After I cleaned up, I had dinner at home. The food was amazing and filling! I loved the shredded potato salad. Sure, a lot of the sesame-soy sauce was gone. However, it tasted yummy. It was worth the cent! The steamed pork and chive dumplings were so good. I didn't dunk them in soy sauce. The filling had so much moisture that I felt like I was eating soup dumplings. The filling had yummy flavour and the dumplings were steamed to perfection. Excellent! You can buy frozen dumplings from this place. I'll need to do it. The tea eggs were the perfect snack while streaming hockey games. I peeled the shells off both of them. The eggs were cracked to allow the amazing soy-based sauce to marinate and get into the eggs. Delicious! I'm a fan. I'll take a closer look at the lids on my food next time. I'm glad that I put food in my insulated bag. It saved cleaning my car's upholstery! (59)

The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.

Easily would be a five star review if both soups that we got came out piping hot rather than lukewarm. Regardless, a great spot for a quick in and out meal.
