A friend came from Montreal and stayed at my place. We thought it was a good opportunity to go to the famous Marathon Cafe to have a HK-style breakfast. The indoor decoration is very simple. A bit hard to describe, but it felt like a vegetarian restaurant in Taiwan Maybe it was because there were some "Zen" or Buddhism-like phrases on the wall. The whole restaurant was full of Traditional Chinese characters. It even sold 明報 (Ming News paper), I bought one to read with my breakfast. Speaking of the breakfast, I would not say their food was healthy...but the flavour was not bad. The coffee was so-so, maybe I should've added milk or cream. Lol, found a divey old fashion dingy window hong kong style cafe close to home, how lucky am I. Walked in, grab your own menu at the service counter, take any available seat on your own, peruse the menu items, go back to to counter to order. Reminded me of the old HKG days where smoking was allowed and working class diners placed their bare feet on chairs and tables while eating, yeah, no shame back then, bring back those days! TV monitors on wall displaying HKG dramas to watch while waiting for your food order. Their known signature milk tea comes in a paper cup. Hot and creamy smooth, very nice on a cold day. Ordered their pork chop with instant noodles and corned beef egg sandwich Pork chop was thick and tender with a nice pan fried crust. Instant noodles are instant noodles, somehow tastes better when someone else is making it for you. Corn beef egg sandwich was ok. Bread was as soft as freshly fallen snow. Generous amounts of corned beef, eggs slightly overcook which tended to dry out the overall sandwich. Loved the atmosphere but food was nothing to write home about, then again my expectations were not high so not disappointed. Ordered from DoorDash for lunch with friends. It took awhile for them to prep our orders. It was delivered to us so I can't comment on the ambiance. I got their all day breakfast - steak and eggs with toast. It was disappointingly small. On the app, this costed $10.50. The steak was very chewy and thin. The bread was toasted but I don't think it was buttered. With delivery, it did get soggy. The toast was placed in a separate bag. I just put it with the rest of the food in the photo for convenience. I also got a milk tea ($6) - it's ok. It's sweet enough (no choice in ice and sweetness levels) and more on the creamier side. Even my friends' orders seemed small - satay beef noodle soup and Hainanese chicken rice (not pictured). The good thing about the Hainanese chicken is that they deboned it. Overall 3/5. It's been a while since I last came here. It's a cafe where you place and pay for your order at the counter first. Then you can grab a seat to stay and eat or do take out. I only come here when I'm in the area and absolutely craving for their milk tea. Their milk tea is so good! It's rich and strong in flavor. I came on a Friday morning. It's always so busy here. I got their combo satay beef with instant noodle, egg sandwich and cold HK milk tea for $14.90. The prices have certainly gone up and the portion is a lot smaller. The service is kind of what you expect of an Asian restaurant, whatever you want to perceive that as. The place is very popular at certain times so sometimes it can get loud in places like these but if you don't mind all that sound, you'll get the best kind of food, the hidden gems. Heard a lot about the place from my mom who loves a good cup of milk tea. We finally get to try it today. It is as advertised, very strong and concentrated. Tasty HK milk tea but the food is sort of pricy. Their milk tea is wonderfully strong and creamy, just the way I like it. However, their foods a sort of pricy for what they are. It feels very "homemade" but with a $5-10 price tag. Their food is good, don't get me wrong, but it's just good--not great. The food also comes a bit cooked down, which give it a bit of a microwaved-feeling--even if it may not be. There are some other HK cafes that I think are doing this way better than Marathon. I was craving some HK style breakfast and decided to try out Marathon café. They also open early at 6:30am! Satay Beef Noodle Soup - I usually go for vermicelli but decided to try udon this time. It was good, but udon doesn't really soak up the satay flavour as well as vermicelli. The satay beef was very flavourful though! 3.75/5 Hong Kong style milk tea - this was BOMB. Their cold milk tea is amazing. I am not a huge milk tea person, but enjoy every single sip. The food wasn't that good though. They look like an authentic HK cafe so I thought their tomato sauce baked pork chop rice would be bomb, but it was such a disappointment. I don't know if they purée their sauce, but it's almost orange and doesn't taste like tomatoes. The double baked bolognese wasn't bad, but some part of it was a bit cold/ not evenly baked, maybe? We also got the condensed milk bun, it was ok, but there was a bit too much bread for the amount of butter/condensed milk we had. They have a few tables available for dinning in. Went again because I wanted something quick, I got their pepper pork stomach with rice noodles and it tastes exactly how I imagined! The soup base has a small kick of spice, enough to notice it and eat comfortable without chugging water lol There are many pieces of pork stomach as well as chicken! I actually get a few to freeze and bring back home Tried a few breakfast items, which were fairly decent. Pineapple bun was nice, although they really loaded it with butter. This review is strictly based on their milk tea. I heard a lot of good things about the milk tea here, including that it has won some awards (you can see it all over the front door when entering). This cafe is located in a small plaza off of Hwy 7 on East Beaver Creek. It has a large green sign with a horse head as their symbol. Parking can be hectic in this plaza during peak times. But otherwise its not too hard to find parking. When you first walk into this cafe, you will find a counter at the back of the restaurant with the words "ORDER HERE" right above the counter. Their menu is hung all around their walls, so as you walk up you can see all the daily specials and offerings, though I was here just for the milk tea. This is not a restaurant where you go, sit down and be served, its more of a cafeteria style setting. Meaning you walk up to the counter, place your order, and if ordering food they will give you a little tent card, you find a place to sit and they bring you your food. During rush hour, they are actually quite busy with take out orders for their drinks. I ordered their large cold milk tea and it came out to $4.75 flat. Their milk tea I found did have a very nice flavor profile. Upon first sip, I found it to be smooth and creamy with a hint of sweetness. It finally ended with a bit of a bitter after taste from the strong black tea they must use. But overall I felt the milk tea is as advertised, its pretty darn good! Also to note, if you feel like playing some lotto they also sell instant lotto cards you can scratch. The other one was my satay chicken wing noodles + a cold hk milk tea for around $7-8. That's why I am genuinely confused when I read reviews saying this is not 'worth it' ... DON'T BE SO CHEAP! It was actually a lot of food. The wait was a bit long, but that's because they were making it fresh - my chicken was hot, hot, hot! Good ratio of meat to noodle and egg to bread. Surprisingly they didn't charge extra for cold drinks which similar places likely will so that's a plus. Satay was actually very good, with nice thick tasting satay flavor. I recently went here to get some Hong Kong style milk tea. I usually go to the one on Midland but I decided to go to this location this time around. This cafe seems to have more tables than the Midland location and a more extensive menu. Since I was on a time crunch, I just bought my milk tea to go. One 2 liter bottle of cold milk tea was $15 so I bought 2 bottles. I also got a large iced milk tea as well. As always, this is the best Hong Kong style milk tea in the East Coast. Was introduced to this place by my brother as him and his coworkers often drop by for cheap HK style drinks. Prices are quite fair (if you're comparing to BBT giants like Chatime etc). Marathon Cafe is quite popular within the asian community. Its your typical Cha Chan Tang style of food and drinks but I was pleasantly surprised about its cleanliness when I walked in. Usually its not this bright and clean. The workers were friendly, it'd help if you could speak Cantonese though. Ive been a huge fan of ice cream black/milk tea after trying it once in Waterloo but I havent been able to find anywhere from the BBT giants in toronto that offer this. I was estatic when I saw that they had this on their menu. The tea tasted strong and delicious and the ice cream hit the spot.
