I love the aesthetic of this cute local HK cafe! It's very contemporary and IG worthy. The food is decent for downtown standard. As a big lover of kaya toast and teh tarik, I was super excited to try this place out. Of course, Hong Kong style breakfast is fundamentally different than what you get in Malaysia, but it gave me some hope for some nostalgic flavors. I got the Set 3 meal (spiced pork rice noodle soup set meal) with kaya on the side. Just for reference, all of the set meal soups use chicken broth as a base. Kaya was good but really really sweet, more than it should've been. I couldn't imagine getting the kaya french toast and how sweet that would've been. The tea was okay. I usually eat everything I can, but the pork was too dry that I had to leave it. I am a big fan of soup for breakfast, regardless though so bonus points for that. The price was great for what you get and service was good. This review is 100% biased, since I came in looking for something that may not exist in the toronto area. If I'm in the area and NEED brunch, I might come back just to get some soup for breakfast but wouldn't go out of my way to do so. read more

Finally had a chance to check out HK Style cafe, located in the Danforth area. It's rare to see this genre of restaurant in the area :) Since I went on a Sunday, only the All Day Breakfast, Weekend Menu & Snacks were available. They do alternate on their w'kend menu as I remember seeing they had a duck dish before, which I would had like to try. They do offer a Weekday Set Lunch menu from Tuesdays to Fridays. What I ordered: French Kayan Toast: The toast was well fried & very delicious. It was one of the highlight Kayan is sweet spread made from a base of coconut milk, eggs, sugar and sometimes pandan leaves as a flavouring. It is popular throughout Southeast Asia.In my haste of taking pics, I forgot to add syrup lol HK milk tea: decent and a nice alternative to the coffees shops in the area. No extra charge to make it cold Curry Beef Brisket & Tendon Rice. I liked the flavour of the curry. It was smooth and wasn't spicy. Even though it did mentioned coconut sauce, I could not really taste it, which is fine by me lol Baked Pork Rice: It was alright but I had higher expectations after reading all the reviews online. Decent amount of cheese. Pork could be more tender. On the tomatey side. It's $1 more on weekends. Since it is far from where I am, likely won't go back any time soon (unless I am in the area). This is a new Hong Kong style cafe. It soft-opened on the Danforth on 2024-04-20. We ordered the following: 1. Set Meal B: Satay Beef Noodles ($9.99). Served with toast, sunny side up eggs, and a drink. 2. Hong Kong Style French Toast with Kaya inside ($4.99). 3. Hong Kong Style Baked Pork Chop Rice ($15.99). This includes a drink. It takes 20-30 mins to be served. The plate it comes in is extremely hot when served. Baked pork chop over rice with tomatoes & cheese. For the two included drinks, we chose cold Ovaltine and hot Hong Kong Milk Tea. The drinks cost $3.99 if ordered separately. In Hong Kong, the Satay Beef is very tender. At this restaurant, they purchase good quality beef, and they don't tenderize it. Usually, restaurants will buy cheap quality beef, so they use some ingredients to tenderize it. The Satay Beef sits in an instant noodle soup. It also comes with toast and two sunny side up eggs. The French Toast comes with a big jar of maple syrup. There is Kaya inside the thick toast. I only got a little piece, but my son ate 90% of it. The Pork Chop and Rice were good. It did have a few pieces of fatty bits, which is normal. The fried rice is fine with a few cherry tomatoes in the sauce. The two drinks were good. The milk tea is strong. There is a small bowl of sugar on the table you can use. The customer service was good. There are tables for indoor seating (there was one table that could seat 6-7) and limited outdoor seating. On a Sun, there is usually a lineup to get a table. There is a bench for three people while waiting. We arrived at 10:45 (they opened at 09:30) and got a table at 11:02. There is free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. There are separate male/female washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. There is at least one high chair for little children. Stopped by for lunch on Sammi's opening weekend, and while they're ironing out things, there's promise to this place. We got: - Hong Kong Style Baked Pork Chop Rice: Pork was tender enough, and really liked the tomato and cheese topping. If you get the combo, you get a fresh side salad and tasty mushroom soup. Good value for the portion size. - Black Pepper Braised Beef Short Rib Rice: Beef was pretty tender and tasted well seasoned. Good value for the portion size. - French Toast with Kaya: Would have liked more kaya in the toast as it was a bit overpowered by the bread and butter. A bit pricey for the size. - Pineapple Bun with Butter: Soft and chewy in all the right places. A bit pricey for the size. - Serradura: Milky and delicately and yummy. - Hong Kong Milk Tea: Authentic taste. Space is small but well laid out. The inside was very spacious with bright and minimalist decor, which felt very inviting and a bit of a departure from the traditional HK cafe clutter. They offer a limited menu selection depending on day/time. We had their weekend brunch menu, and got their all day breakfast and baked pork chop rice. I really liked the all day breakfast and the baked pork chop rice was also good, just a bit overbaked. Service was friendly and helpful. I'm so glad this opened up in the neighbourhood because it's adding more diversity (& Asian food) near Greektown. It is a minimalist interior decor. Staff are friendly. It does get crowded and there was a line but was able to get a table for 4 within 15 mins. I saw a lot of small families dined in which was nice to see. The food itself is rather simple and nothing spectacular except for the pineapple bun with a thick slice of delicious salted butter (it's just addictive). But that's not a negative comment. I so happened to be in the area and decided to try it out. As soon as you walk in you will notice that the restaurant is very nicely renovated with a very clean and bright looking space. There is a good amount of seating especially for smaller parties but overall the ambience was great. The menu itself was not huge offering mainly breakfast items and I noticed that some items in photos of the menu were not present so I am assuming their menu is still evolving. We tried ordering the baked pork chops and BBQ pork rice but they were out so we ended up ordering the set meals. I had the satay beef noodles which came with 2 sunny side eggs, toast and a beverage. The noodles that came with this were instant noodles which was not the case with the item my partner ordered (rice noodles) so pay attention if you do not want instant noodles. The beef in the noodles was tender but I found the flavour to be lacking. I also had a little bit of the HK style French toast with kaya and boy was it good. Definitely ordering this again next time I come here. All in all, I would say it wasn't a bad first visit to Sammi. I was a bit disappointed with certain aspects but give the price point you are getting good value and maaaaaan that French toast yummmm. read more

It's always nice to see a HK cafe pop up in areas destitute of Asian fare. I was interested in trying this place and when my friends finally suggested it, it was the easiest yes I've agreed to (thanks M&F lol) We went on a rainy Sunday morning and with the TTC delays and Pape closed, we finally made it around 11:30. There were a few parties ahead of us, and more ppl lining up to dine. There is only 1 large sized picnic table so bear that in mind if you're a larger group. They don't adhere to sharing tables here, which is mostly seen as a pro here in North America :) When we were finally seated, we appreciated the hooks on the wall to keep our bags off the floor and a waiter promptly brought us some utensils. The menu consists of your classic set menu items for breakfast, as well as some unique items like Tofu-Mushroom-A Bit Spicy-Creamy Pasta on their lunch menu ;P You also don't see kaya toast at every CCT I ordered their baked pork chop rice because that was a dish at one point, I was super inspired to make and wonder how chefs do everything in a reasonable timeframe @.@ It took a little longer to arrive but that's expected. Friends ordered the macaroni with ham and egg and said it was just OK. Satay beef noodles looked yummy too, but I was worried about not being full. I really liked their milk tea, with enough tea flavour and creaminess. Because of the full house, the kitchen orders were slammed and food arrived sporadically. French toast was delicious but who doesn't like fried bread with PB smeared in the middle? No Amex but card accepted. Omg I love that there is a HK style Cafe in the area now. Price is very reasonable but menu is mostly breakfast food which I don't mind. Place looks for nice and clean as well.
