It feels like a fresh take on classic hk-style comfort food with some newer, more creative dishes We tried a few items to share. The garlic cream curry baked rice with chicken cutlet was super rich and comforting. The curry had a creamy, slightly garlicky flavor, and the chicken cutlet was crispy on the outside while still tender inside. The beef and eggplant stone pot was one of my favorites. It's really flavorful and saucy, and great with rice. For dessert, the salted egg yolk French toast is definitely a must-order. It's crispy on the outside with a gooey salted egg center, and the pork floss on top adds a nice savory contrast. We also tried the Ovaltine French toast, which had a malty sweetness that paired well with the buttery toast. Overall, it feels like a nice refresh from the original menu. still very comforting, but with a slightly more elevated approach to classic HK café dishes. Hong Kongers generally love to eat. For Hong Kongers abroad, finding a taste of home at various Hong Kong style cafes just seems like a natural thing to do. It's in our DNA. Han Tai Wan, I remember had a different name before. And the restaurant exterior has changed. It's hard to not notice them since there's not many HK cafes in the Yonge and Finch area and because of their gimmicky HK style decor. But due to their inconvenient location, I haven't given them a try until now. While Cantonese songs were periodically played on their speakers, none of their servers seem to speak Cantonese as their mother tongue. Honestly, I don't care what language they spoke if the food was tasty and authentic. I ordered a recommended item off the menu, the baked tomato pork chop rice, and I wouldn't say it was exactly authentic. The portion was small and the prices were higher than most HK cafes. You are definitely paying the North York (high) rent tax here. The sauce on the rice was ok, but it tasted a bit too artificial. The batter on the pork chop is not really HK style. The rice was just plain rice and sadly not stir fried. The only plus was they were generous with the cheese. The cheese lovers would love it (and I'm one of them), but it's definitely too much for a HK style pork chop. Sometimes there is too much of a good thing. The HK milk tea was not memorable. Aside from the novelty of the HK style decor, and prime North York location for those who live in the area, I don't see the appeal of this place. It's right near Yonge/Finch intersection so you can find parking around the block and easily accessible by TTC. Interior is very retro - draws a lot of references and layout of a HK Cafe back in the 70s/80s I would say. It's not super big, usually good for small groups. Service is nice and owner is quite friendly to make any recommendations. Order comes pretty quickly as well. Food They have a variety of menu items that are traditional HK style and fusion style. I've heard the chef curated the menu from his experiences and it was nice to see a nice change. I ended up choosing a set menu which has a few appetizers, 2 mains, dessert and drinks. Every item was very presentable and flavourful. What stood out for me was the Hainanese Chicken rice - it was super juicy and soft! The seafood rice "risotto" was also a nice change as well. Portion size was meant for 2 people, but definitely can share with 3 people cause it was way more than enough. Have been curious since the previous establishment closed down suddenly and this new place reopened branding itself as Hong Kong Fusion and Gastropub. Essentially it's a rebranded Hong Kong Cafe. The interior is basically the same and the name of the previous establishment can still be found in the decor. You are handed 2 menus, one with more traditional HK cafe fare and another menu with items the fall the fusion category. Looking around most diners stuck with the HK cafe menu. Han Tai Wan recently rebranded, and the food quality is really solid. The restaurant has a clean, modern atmosphere but still gives that cozy Hong Kong vibe. We tried the $79.99 set for two and were pleasantly surprised by how generous the portions were -- it comfortably fed three of us with leftovers. Great value. Highlights for me were the clay pot BBQ rice (nice smoky flavor), the tender lamb ribs, and the curry beef skewers. The risotto with crispy fish skin was unique and flavorful. The Hong Kong milk tea was smooth and well balanced. Service was friendly, and we were told they invited a new chef from a Michelin restaurant, which likely explains the elevated flavors. Han Tai Wan (formerly Good Luck HK Cafe) has a wide variety of dishes, especially since rebranding. I ordered the eel bowl with other meats (Chinese sausages) and the eel was delicious. The food was filling and was served in a hot bowl. The food is served quickly and one of the employees also came and explained the rebrand after we questioned it. The decorations are quite cute and add a nice touch, especially the lit-up sign that says "Good Luck HK Cafe." I would come here again to try their other menu items. read more

Going out into their own adventure, Han Tai Wan combines the love of both Hong Kong style cafes and gastropubs! Keeping the same tradition of Hong Kong style cafe menus, the Curry Fish Balls are a nice way to start off the meal with their curry paste being handmade and the spices being cooked out to enhance the aroma. The Baked Porkchop in Tomato Sauce is a nostalgic East Meets West blend where the pasta was cooked to a nice al dente with the sweet tomato sauce and baked cheese pairing well with the crisp porkchop. Han Tai Wai has also expanded their menu to include East Asian flavours with gastropub classics. The Scallop Sashimi is a nice refreshing hors d'oeurve with the sweet and sour flavour having a nice balance to pair with the sweet scallop in every bite. The Golden Crispy Prawns wrapped in fried noodles is a great play on textures with the perfectly wrapped noodles acting as a foil to the sweet prawns. The Hainanese Chicken Stone Pot Rice is an elevated classic on Hainanese Chicken Rice. The chicken is poached nicely as it retains its juiciness with the rice absorbing the broth very well as it cooks in the stone pot, to ensure its crispy bottom that is a favourite to enjoy when eating stone pot rice. The Stone Pot "Sorrow Romance" rice is packed with cured meat and BBQ Pork where the flavours are brought together by the sweetened soy as it is drizzled on the rice. The Pineapple Bun with Tiramisu has a great balance of flavours with the tiramisu "ice cream" with the slight bitter notes of the espresso providing a nice "pick me up" flavour when enjoying the crispy and fresh pineapple bun! Reading other reviews, it sounds like HTW had a rebrand/glow up where a lot of the original menu remained intact but some elevated options were added. Can't complain about that! From your BPCR to your CLAY POT RICE to your seafood selections of (SCALLOPS (in the shell of course) and STIR FRIED CLAMS and to your MANGO SAGO, I'm pretty sure you'll find something to salivate over. Their wines are also very, very reasonably priced! Staff were friendly and the food came quickly! I'd recommend making resos (especially for a large group) bc this place filled up quickly read more

Come back to Han Tai Wan after their rebranding and was pleasantly surprised. The new fusion menu has some interesting dishes, we especially liked the stone pot BBQ rice. You'll find many remnants of the previous Good Luck HK Cafe here. If you're a regular, you'll find you're still in a familiar place. With this rebrand, most previous menu items remain, with a few new additions. The staff are super friendly. The new menu items have creative names, with an interesting story to it! They explained that their new specialty is Stone Pot Rice. But I opted for my favourite, the classic Baked Tomato Sauce Pork Chop rice. Compared to the excessive Google 5-star reviews, I did find a few flaws during my visit. My sauce was watery. The rice was undercooked. The milk tea was bitter and came in a small cup. "HK portions". For $18, this won't do and I feel there are better alternatives around. But, with the new changeover, I'm sure they're still ironing out the wrinkles. The staff came over asking for feedback, so I let them know.. The pork cutlet was great though! Looking around me, they have many aesthetic items I'd like to try, so I will be back again one day. Came on a Friday night. This is a new concept restaurant owned by the former Good Luck Cafe. The points program is the good luck cafe one. There is an app that you can download which is the good luck cafe one. You give your phone number for them to record your points when you order. We tried the Good Fortune Duo Set. It comes with Han Tai Wan Golden Crispy Prawns 2 pcs, Lamb Rack with House Fermented Tofu Sauce, Chiu Chow-Style Seafood Risotto with Deep Fried Fish Skin Chips, Stone Pot 'Sorrow Romance Rice * 1, House Draft Beer/ Bear Milk Tea or Bear Lemon Tea + 2, Cha Chaan Teng Ovaltine Pudding * 2. The food was quite good, especially the risotto. The lamb was very tasty and not lamby tasting as I'm not a lamb fan. The dessert was delicious as well. Overall a great meal. Daughter wanted to go to a cha chan tang place while we were in Canada. We have never been to North York before, so we decided to give this place a try after reading the reviews. We were looking for Good Luck HK Cafe but we found Han Tai Wan in its place. We found out that they kept part of the Good Luck Cafe items on their menu. The cafe is small but cozy, with the back wall covered in a mural and the wall in front adorned with signs and framed pictures of the cafe's specialty bear drinks. Three TV screens play above the counter near the back and counter seating is available at the cafe's front window. We ordered the following through their QR code: B02 Shredded Pork Preserved Vegetable Rice Noodle Soup- daughter ordered this and liked it a lot. She said that there was an explosion of flavor and warmth to It and loved it a lot. E03 Butter Pineapple Bun- we liked this a lot. It was nice, salty and buttery. I wasn't used to the big slab of butter that came along with the bun, but it was pretty good. G05 HK style milk tea hot- daughter thought it was tasty and hot which she needed because of the cold and snowy weather. This is her go to when we go to a HK cafe. S06 Shiitake Mushroom Steamed Chicken & Assorted Preserved Sausage & Meat (Pork) On Lotus Leaf Rice - Hubs wanted this and thought this was great. He was getting tired of crunchy rice casseroles and loved this order. Rice was nice and soft with no crunch, just the way he wanted. G02 Teddy Bear Lemon Tea- this was so cute. The bear didn't melt by the time we were done with the drink but daughter wished she could've taken it home. LOL. There was a slight language barrier that they didn't speak Cantonese and only Mandarin. Kind of weird because it's supposed to be a HK style cafe. I tried to tell them that daughter has a peanut allergy but they didn't seem to understand. So, I made sure I stated that when I ordered through the QR code system I had to use. At the end, it all worked out. We came here on a snowy Sunday, so there wasn't a wait and it was easy to find parking. We managed to park directly across the street and not have to pay the meter! They had given us a receipt which I mistook for the bill and went to pay what I owed through the QR code. They said that it was to confirm our order and not a bill. If we paid cash, there was a 5% discount. I like the honesty with this place. So, aside from the temporary language barrier, this was place was friendly and service was quick.
