January 22, 2026 - got an Instagram recommendation for this place and decided to give it a go. We got the pork ribs, sausage and dried pork rice and the must try pan fried dumplings. First off, the clay pot rice. The rice was really well seasons. The crispy "Nong" mixed really well with the standard rice and each bite was a good mix of the saucy normal rice and the crispy rice at the bottom. Each of the meats had a distinct flavour that gave each bite a different taste. I'd definitely come back to try the different clay pots. Next the dumplings. I think they were pan fried dumplings were made really well made. The bottom was crispy and the topside was very soft and tender. The filling was a mix of meats and chive and it was really juicy and tender. Great Cantonese food after mahjong night, but be ready to wait (especially on weekends) Six of us booked a table here for dinner after a short mahjong session at a friend's house. This was my first time dining in, though a few of our group had been here before and they recommended it - and now I see why. We waited about half an hour but it was well worth it! I can see why this place is pretty popular and I like how efficient the wait staff were. While we we next in line for a table they gave us a menu and we quickly ordered off before seating. It helped when we knew what we wanted upon looking at the menu online prior to selecting our meals. They have hot pot and it looked super exciting to try the next time we are here. Because we were two people, we opt to just get a clay pot rice with beef, the pickled pork stomach soup with instant noodles, pan fried dumplings and sweet glutinous rice balls with peanuts and black sesame. Everything came out promptly, smelled and looked pretty delicious. The clay pot rice still sizzling however I felt like the flavors were underwhelming and I was hoping it would come with some sweet soya sauce to drizzle on top of it. Always a wait time so we usually go for first seating. Love love love their clay pot rice. Lots of crispy rice at the bottom of the pot (good for sharing). All the topping meats are quite flavourful and there's enough topping to go with all the rice. They are also known for their stomach soup and it's quite peppery. When in doubt follow the crowd, is an age old adage that many follow when it comes to deciding where to eat. While overhyped restaurants are bountiful in the restaurant scene, the age old adage served me well when it came to Big Casserole. Not that I needed the adage to make me want to dine here... I mean I've been eyeing this place ever since the previous Vietnamese place went under and a new signage was installed. I just love a good clay pot casserole rice. To understand how crazy this place is right now, expect to wait for a table even on a Monday night. But, this place is worth your wait. The casserole rice was impressive. The rice was aromatic and the grains of rice can be distinctly separated. The flavours of the topping (chicken and preserved sausage) directly transferred to the rice. The bottom layer of the rice had a crunch to it and it's not the kind that sticks to your teeth. And they were able to get it ready in 15 minutes. On a separate visit I had the white pepper soup with pig's stomach and chicken (portion for one and not their hot pot one). The soup had the right peppery punch, pig's stomach was cleaned properly with no weird taste and the chicken is definitely the free range variety. You do get a side of noodle or rice with it as well. I'm hopeful that they can maintain their food quality as I anticipate returning to Big Casserole on the regular. Although most people don't expect much service at a Chinese restaurant, their servers overall were friendly and helpful. My only critique is that I found a big chicken feather in my soup. First time trying this newly opened restaurant! My foodie cousin recommended to my family. There was quite a long wait, even though it was a Monday night (though it was Jan. 1 new years day). There is a tablet to check in and join the queue. My family waited about 30-40 minutes for our table. Bring cash as it's 5% off. We noticed a lot of people getting their clay rice pots and hot pots, so we decided to share and try all of it too. We ordered 3 clay pots (1 of them is not pictured because I was too hungry), and one chicken hot pot (size small). The clay pots were very flavourful, though quite oily and could have had more meat. It was a shallow dish, with a lot of rice. My mom enjoyed scraping off the crispy edges! They gave us the wrong chicken hot pot, so they offered an addition 5% off the bill for their mistake. Nonetheless, it was still good! It tasted healthy and had a bit of an herbal flavour. They brought over a plate of chopped raw chicken, and once the hot pot is boiling, they place it into the pot for you. I didn't really understand why this was a concept, but it was fine lol. There's also an option to order more items for actual hot pot style (we ordered additional wintermelon and beef slices to cook in our hot pot). And the fried fish paste appetizer had the wrong sauce. The real one is mad e of a combination soy sauce brown sugar mix. Aside from failing on all the food. The service was outrageous. Saw a fb post on this place and piqued my interest. I've tried a similar place to this in Scarborough. When we got there, we noticed that it was still in their soft opening phase. We went on a weekend and as the night went on, iy got busy. They had a lot of customers waiting for seats. The servers gave them all menus to help them decide what to order when they got seats. This place took over the old Q1 pho. Ambiance - 4/5: they had big posters on the walls detailing benefits of their soups. And it was an open kitchen so you could see them preparing the food. Food - 4/5: I only saw the casserole dishes so I was surprised to see that they have hot pot on the menu. You can order a small or large pot and it seems like there are already a lot of ingredients in the pot already - vegetables, protein, and noodles. Of course you can order other add ons such as more protein, vegetables, appetizers, etc. However, it is all priced by dish. We weren't hungry enough to try the hotpot so we stuck with 2 casseroles - classic sausage and dried pork rice and preserved meats and with mushroom chicken. Both dishes were good. There weren't a lot crispy rice bits left over. The rice came off the side nicely. I asked for soy sauce on the side for the chicken one. I wanted to see if the rice is fragrant naturally and if it absorbed any of the flavours from the chicken and preserved meats. Unfortunately, it was only neutral (quite a lot) oil on the rice. Their drinks menu is heavily asian based. We tried their plum juice. It wasn't bad. The plums were heavily smoked so it's a different taste to other restaurants. They had preserved plum slices at the bottom of the drink. My only complaint is that despite it being a cold drink, the lid kept cracking. Service - 4/5: unfortunately, their English is lacking. They only speak Cantonese or Mandarin and depending. Their service was quick and they did check on us a few times to remove finished plates. Since we ordered casseroles, it took a bit longer of a wait time to prepare. You can order via 2 ways - scanning the QR code on the table or mark what you want on the menu in erasable markers provided. I found the app quite laggy. There is a cash discount but I can't remember how much. Overall: 4/5 - I want to go back ans try their hotpot. But I'll probably bring a few friends. Super excited to try this place and since we knew there would be a lot of people, we went at 6pm on Thursday and there was already a line up. We got a bunch of stuff to try especially the rice and pork stomach soup. The pork stomach soup wasn't really what we expected since it came with noodles/rice. I guess we got used to Chiu Chow Koon's flavour. The fried dumplings and fried fish paste were so good though. The satay beef rice roll was good, but there was definitely more sauce than rice rolls. Good authentic clay pot rice. You can tell the rice is made on the same pot because there is some burnt rice at the bottom. The pepper pork intestines soup is very rich and has a lot of pepper. Great dish for the winter as it warms you up. You can add your choice of noodle and it's only $15.99. You can add $1.99 for a herbal tea. Overall I think their items are reasonably priced. You get 5% off for cash payments. The seating is comfortable but you will need to reserve a seat to avoid disappointment. This place starts getting packed by 5pm already. read more

Something that was needed has arrived! Clay pot rice (casserole)! I've always enjoyed eating these...simple and cozy food that isn't offered everywhere. The Big Casserole specializes in these as well as hotpot. It's a bright and spacious area and I came and didn't have to wait too long (but I went late into the night, as they thankfully close at 10 pm). I ordered the chicken and mushroom rice and the Chinese sausage and both were pretty good! The pot is huge but slightly shallow, and is very filling for 1 person to eat alone. You can add $1 for a monk fruit herbal tea, which makes it so perfect after eating this hearty meal. Love this place! Looking forward to coming here more often. read more
