Solid dim sum restaurant. Big but not too big, fancy but not too fancy, with all the dishes done well. We had the standard dim sum dishes, as well as a large seafood congee. It looked big enough to give a baby bath in. We could not finish, had a lot of leftovers for tomorrow breakfast. Congee was very good, with a lot of seafood. Starchiva wasn't our first choice for dim sum brunch at 1 pm on Christmas Day -- our original spot still had a long wait even with a reservation -- but I'm glad we ended up here. I've had dinner at Starchiva a few times, and this visit gave me a chance to try their dim sum. Everything we ordered was well made, fresh, and genuinely tasty. The only miss was the Eggplant E‑Fu Noodle: hardly any eggplant, overly sweet, and the sauce leaned a bit too gooey. Service was friendly, and the décor has an upbeat, pleasant vibe that makes the space feel lively. A good option for groups of four or more. We came here for dim sum with my in-laws. Reservation is under our last name which they didn't seem to understand as long as it was pronounced in completely Chinese pronunciation... annoying to be honest because I'm sure as restaurant staff you would know it in Chinese and English way. Anyways service is quite fast, lots of staff around you can ask to come and ask for help. You gotta write your order down on the sheet they give you, any additional you place the number on the "add" column, usual dim sum place. Love the matcha rice roll with crunchy shrimp which is extra $6.80. Dim sum is pretty good. This would be my 3rd time here for dim sum, came here a while ago in the winter for dinner. Honestly, we came to Starchiva because the lineup for the One was too long. Haha. But this place actually had great dim sum and excellent service. It's pretty popular here also. Despite this, they sat at a table almost immediately. They also got us our tea/water quickly. The food came put in waves. Went here for a friend's birthday party. We got a private room for just one table which was super convenient! A huge plus for this. The set meals also come with a double boiled soup (not pictured) which was everyone's favourite. Food here is very delicious and had the perfect punch of flavour. Arrived on a cold winter night and was looking for a place for dinner. Stepped into Starchiva in Richmond Hill. The interior is spacious but certain tables arrangement could be better. There were a few tables next to the fish tank. Parking in front of the restaurant or nearby is fairly limited. Tried a variety of dishes and the quality is there. It's definitely better than a few places that serve the same cuisine. They accept all forms of payment. There is no cash discount but there is a $5 surcharge for using credit card. Delicious food, beautiful interior and great for large groups. Came for a celebration and got their private room seating two large tables (about 20+ of us). Stepping into the restaurant I noticed that the space was beautiful and large and great for large parties. I will note that the server did try to upsell us on a combo that was more expensive and came with less food (but of course had more quality items). We kindly declined and went for the cheaper option that was so delicious and didn't come out short at all. You can bring your own wine but will have to pay a corkage fee, which is still cheaper than buying wine at the restaurants. We got a combo which came with delicious food items like: Lobster in HK style 5/5 - This came with some tortilla chips which was odd, but the flavour of the lobster was great! Lots of fried mini crispy fish that came with it as well. Hand shredded chicken 5/5 - Delicious and shredded by hand making it easier to eat since the portions are already small enough to share. Snow pea leaf in broth 5/5 - A simple yet delicious dish of vegetable. The fried whole garlic is a great addition to your bite as it's packed with umami Sweet and sour pork 5/5 - Love love love! So good and opens up the palette since it's both sweet and sour. Goes great with rice Stir fried beef cubes 5/5 - Nice and saucey, cooked to perfection. Would get this again! After two long years, I finally had the opportunity to finally try Starchiva! Known for their take on the classics in Cantonese cuisine, Starchiva will not let you down in quality and service. Their Signature Marinated Duck is well known and for good reason! The marinating juices are a great compliment to rice and the duck is still moist and succulent. Our usual go-to dinner spot when we're in town! This time, we splurged on a king crab and it's worth it. As a king crab lover, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to cook it properly to get the full flavor and taste! The chefs here are always spot on, so we knew the crab would be good. Our first course was ginger & scallion steamed over vermicelli noodles, second course was Hong Kong style (my favorite), third course was crab butter steamed silkey eggs. The whole dinner was a part of their preset menu, which includes the 6lb king crab (ours was 7lbs, so we had to pay $80 extra), sweet & sour pork, dried scallop egg white fried rice, snow pea tip leaves, and dessert. A good chinese food option, especially on a Sunday afternoon as they do not do dimsim but only chinese dishes. Therefore, when the crowds are all lining up and jostling for small bites, you can have a calm lunch with your family here instead. They have plenty of large tables so they seem popular with family and friends gathering around over a meal. We had the steamed fish, fried beef with beans and the sweet and sour pork. The food was well made and had nice touches in each dish. For example, there were pickled pearl onions in the sweet and sour pork to enhance the flavor of the dish. There were Christmas special sets for dinner, so we came to get takeout. The meal for four people included Maggi-style 3 lb lobster and whitebait, crab meat and fish maw soup, stir-fried beef tenderloin with mixed mushrooms, half a double-boiled free-range chicken, braised baby bok choy with garlic in broth, and a Christmas yule log for $178. This also included white rice. These Christmas special sets also had ones for 6, 8, or 10 people. It's a good thing we arrived earlier than our pickup time, as the food was ready and waiting when we got there. I realize this was a meal for four people, but if it's only meant for four people, they must be very big eaters. We had six people, and we barely finished all the food. It didn't register for us until we finished the soup that the little container with this red liquid in it was vinegar for the soup :P. The beef tenderloin was very tender, and all the dishes were tasty, but we found that the lobster was too salty. The Christmas yule log that came with the dinner was beautiful and so delightful. This restaurant is located where the popular dragon boat dim sum restaurant used to be. Complimentary parking is limited as the plaza/ building strip isn't big. Note that there is a 1.5 seating limit and they charge and extra 5$ for credit card payment on their dinner sets. We ordered their 155$ dinner set, which came with a beef, pork, chicken, veggie and crab dish. It did not come with any rice, so we ordered a few extra (2.5$/ bowl). The first few dishes came out so fast, it almost felt like they were pre-made. Service was mediocre, but decent for a Chinese restaurant. This is another classy restaurant with a modest strip mall storefront. My Toronto experience on this short trip reinforces that excellent Asian restaurants up here aren't necessarily flashy or stylish on their exterior and so be it. I think this was quite possibly my best personal Chinese dinner ever (not counting some business dinners in China), but it's not cheap. It's also not expensive though for the quality, when you think of say what a Next or Alinea dinner in Chicago might cost (maybe roughly $300 USD per person). Our party of 6 enjoyed a pre-ordered 10 course dinner for 6 for $558 CD or $413.33 USD. The menu is shown in a little more detail in one of the photos but here it is: 6 lb lobster with whitebait (or baby salty fish topping) Shark fin soup Steamed 1.5 lb greenbass Goose palm (aka feet) with abalone Double boiled free range chicken Sweet and sour pork Steamed egg custard with lobster paste Yeung Chow fried rice Double boiled bird's nest with almond milk Dessert cakes Service was tip-top excellent, professional, and attentive. Various servers would roam about and portion out individual size servings of soup, entrees, and desserts. The 6 lb lobster size, the steamed egg custard with lobster paste, and the bird's nest with almond milk were new dishes for me personally. I surmise you could live 100 years and still find new Chinese dishes to enjoy if you just looked and asked! Every dish was tip top excellent tasting. The lobster had that hot wok and deep stir fried flavor and was uniquely topped with tiny salty fish. The server actually initially brought out two 3 lb lobsters for approval, but after some mild pushback, he went back and "found" the 6 lb lobster that we initially expected. Ha, they didn't get us on that, and the bigger the better (and also more exotic) on the lobster was our expectation. The unique steamed egg custard was very rich and oily, but was really excellent and delicious as a topping on the fried rice or white rice. The double boiled bird's nest was very diluted in the almond milk, and you really wouldn't know what the bird's nest material was (it was like little tender and tasteless gelatinous chunks) if it weren't stated on the menu, but whatever, you can say you had that dish now, and it was also delicious and refreshing. This restaurant has switched to offering dimsum at lunch time replacing the "business" lunch menu before, which came with coffee/tea. A tea charge $2.50pp is added regardless what you order at lunch. On balance, becomes pricier than before but the food quality is still satisfactory. But my chief complain is, their washroom (women, haven't seen the men's) is disgusting, wet floor, unflushed, understandably due to iresponsible users, but for such a cusine restaurant, surely cleaning should be more frequent. Great all-around spot for Cantonese cuisine. They have a bunch of set dinner combos available which offer better value than ordering foods separately. We wanted to try their signature five-spice duck, but you have to call in a day in advance to reserve it! Make sure to do that if you want to try this signature dish. This place is relatively new and I have been wanting to try it for a while. We ordered the three pounds' lobster combo ($128) and added a 2-pounds steam fish (additional $56) to celebrate the Chinese New Year. There were hits and misses on the dishes, and overall it was a 3.5-star experience in terms of food quality. The seafood was quite fresh, but a lot of fried dishes were lacking some cooking skills. There were certainly highlights: - The steam fish: Although being a bit expensive, it was quite fresh and cooked just alright. I generally am not a big fan of steam fish, but still ate quite a bit. - The lobster: The lobster again was quite fresh and was cooked alright. - White chocolate cheesecake: Quite cheesy and not too sweet. However, the chicken dish, scallop dish were lacking some cooking fundamentals there in terms of flavouring. The fish maw was a bit hard in the soup and the soup was not tasty. I order through Uber eats pickup and was impressed with both the food and how the restaurant looks inside. Great spot overall, service was a little slow at the beginning, but the kitchen really made up speed, all the dishes pretty much came out together! The combo is a good deal, with the lobster cooked perfectly and the salt baked chicken was not dry at all. Ordered a lobster combo for takeout plus a steamed fish. The pick-up was fast and efficient. The staff even helped me carry my food to the car. The food itself is as per some of the other reviews: The lobster was very good. It was well flavoured and came one a bed of deep fried noodle fish. I prefer this rather than the fries you get from Fishman Lobster Clubhouse - the fries get soggy too fast. The steamed fish was slightly overcooked but it was a bigger sized fish (over 2 lbs) so it's hard to get it exactly right generally. We wanted a smaller fish but they didn't have any at the time. The pea sprouts with goji berry was decent. Good portion and as expected. And now for the disappointments: The chicken was a unpleasant surprise. I did not expect that as a cold dish (no it's not a takeout issue this chicken tasted like it came from the fridge while the other food was still warm). Also the meat was so tough - more so than usual free range chicken tough. The spicy fried scallop was average. The fish maw soup was very bland. I had to add my own pepper to it at home. The meal also came with some cake for dessert. Those were okay but nothing special. [ French Toast ] The diner also sell fresh pastries here as well so I knew I was in for a treat when ordering the french toast. The freshness of the bread really sets them apart. Great little fluffy goodness topped with butter and condensed milk. [ Curry fish ball ] I like the texture of the fish ball. It's firmness is spot on where it doesn't seem overly processed like ones that you find in supermarket/hot pot restaurants. Coated with curry, great combination. The food was great and staff here are friendly. However I do feel like they're understaffed.
