I love soup. I can't say that I loved soup all my life. I never loved my mom's lentil soup growing up because it tasted like mush. However, I loved her other soups that had lots of veggies.
It had been a while since I used my Too Good To Go (TGTO) app. I took a look on Monday and found Souperlicious. A Caribbean place that has soup? I was intrigued. I got a mysterious package and headed over to this place after work to pick it up.
It's in a plaza near Dollarama on the northeast corner of Brimley Road and Eglinton Avenue East. I parked practically in front of both placed and walked in.
I got the friendliest hello from the woman behind the counter. I indicated that I had a TGTO order and showed its details from the app to her. She nodded.
She asked me whether I wanted a variety of soups or the same one for all three containers. I went with the former. She also asked if I had any allergies. I was good.
She then asked if I had a bag. I didn't bring one, but said that I could fetch one from my car. She was good with that plan. I went to fetch my reusable bag and she went into the back to fetch the soup.
What I didn't know was that I got three generous containers of frozen soup. When you order food from this eatery, everything is ready to eat. With TGTO, it's the exception.
I got three frozen containers:
- Chicken soup with rice
- Cornbread porridge
- Lentil soup
I got instructions from the woman to heat the soups up in a saucepan. Nuking it in the microwave was discouraged.
I did the craziest thing when I got home. I wanted to try the chicken soup with rice that I melted down the mini iceberg in a saucepan. Man, that tested my patience and I tend to have a lot of it. However, when you're hungry, my patience disappears fairly quickly.
Anyway, I did manage to melt the frozen soup down. I did have to add more water, as it was super thick by the time it was melted.
This soup had a lot of chicken, mainly from chicken thighs. There were some bones that you do need to pay attention to. This soup was flavourful, with some decent spiciness to it. I loved it.
I put the remaining two containers in my fridge. I had the cornmeal porridge the next day.
I am used to congee where it's not sweet. This porridge was sweeter than I had anticipated, but not to the point where I dubbed it a dessert porridge. The cornmeal was blended into the porridge and it was smooth in texture. It almost looked shiny to me when I poured it into my bowl.
It was yummy. I do recommend pairing it with something savoury. I had a curry beef flaky pastry with it and it was perfect. I felt so full eating all that porridge.
Tonight, I polished off the trifecta and had the lentil soup. Ah, if only my mom made lentil soup such that you can still recognize the lentil shapes in each spoonful.
This lentil soup was hearty, with chunks of potato, carrots, and more. I paired this soup with a banh mi sandwich. So good!
I want to try the oxtail soup next. This place also has bowls, so it's not entirely an all-soup menu. You can order on Doordash and Skip the Dishes to get the full menu.
I'm a fan. It was a great find. I'll be back for more comforting soup with a Caribbean twist.
