I went to the Michigan avenue location in Chicago which opens at 11am. . At 11:30 am they told me I could not use the cordoned off dressing rooms until noon because they had no staff to monitor them. They nevertheless welcomed me to wait in the extremely long check out line to purchase the mountain of items I had amassed, try them on at home, and then return what I didn't want. NO THANKS! I walked out. This store feels like it's going out of business and I noticed that the Northbrook store is permanently closed. Boo. read more

Good cheap place for seemingly decent quality clothes. The wife digs this place a lot. I don't think I fit the profile of their target consumer though. Most things the wife picked out for me were dang tight. I'm usually a medium but all the mediums were way small on the chest and shoulders. I think they try to give us smaller guys a little boost in the ego dept to make us buy their stuffs. Funny thing is, all the guys coming out of the dressing rooms were like these really skinny metro looking guys. It fit their body perfectly. If you're metro and want cheap clothes then this place is definitely for you. I like H&M. I like that the store is color coded, which is how I typically shop. I like that the clothes are trendy, cute, and affordable. I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that I will only wear a few months. However, I don't really like this location. Since it is right on Michigan Ave. it gets overcrowded with tourists. I really don't like having to fight through the foot traffic outside and then fight through the crowds inside. I usually go to the State Street location instead. read more

What a disgusting experience. I had a blast shopping until going into a fitting room. Two employees decided that they would speak about their personal lives the whole half hour I was in and out of there. I'm sorry but I DO NOT go shopping to hear other peoples vulgar talk and personal business. I don't care who said what about who, where you got drunk and how much fun you had. Don't care. As I'm walking out speaking to a friend I mentioned how unprofessional it is to talk so much. I wasn't speaking loudly but even if I was.... I was followed all the way out of the fitting room into another deparment to have this little girl (employee, I think her name was Naomi, skinny african american woman though) say, "excuse me, the guy I was working with said you were saying something about us, so did you?!?! Do you have something to say". Excuuuuuuuse me??!?!?!??!!!! It seems as if she was trying to intimidate me and maybe scare me? Really?!?!?!!! She raised her voice and literally had a whole room of customers staring at us. Extremely embarrassing. No one wants to hear your personal business lady so yes YOU SHOULD be quiet and no you should NOT try to check a customer. I've worked customer service and I have had some customers say some nasty things and stayed quiet because IT WAS MY JOB TO. Seems like a scene out of high school when you thought you should approach someone who was "talking about you." I spoke with the manager and he said he'd chat with her about it. When I went back in the next Monday (it was a saturday when I was there before) she was still working in there. I called corporate and no one bothered to return my call. ANY decent place would have let her go right away. An experience like this has completely shut me off to H&M. Terrible employees with no sense of customer service, manners or etiquette. The corporate office is EVEN WORSE for not even bothering to return my call. I should feel comfortable walking into a store and if I walk in there will I? No. They have cute clothes but I'd rather take my business elsewhere. This place is a joke. read more

Regardless of your style, I honestly think that there is something for everyone at H&M for one reason: THE PRICE! Who doesn't like to buy clothes at a low price? Ok, it may only last for one month, or could be used to go out to a sleazy party, but its cheap. And if you're a boy who likes boys, then head over to H&M because gays flock to H&M like moths to a light. In the 30 minutes I was there, my boyfriend was hit-on by 2 sales people, and by most of the boys shopping there. Last April I was trapped in here for TWO HOURS on a Saturday, and most of that time was spent waiting in line for the fitting rooms and cashier. If you live in the city, do yourself a favor and go on a weekday. I do like the clothes at H&M, and this is a particularly nice location. H&M saved me when I needed "casual yet professional yet trendy" clothes for one particular business trip. If you're at all curvy, you might have trouble with their jeans and trousers, but everything else has fit me just fine. read more

I actually like this location. A lot. I know better than to go here on a weekend, so I can't comment on that. On the weekday afternoons that I have been here, its been chaos-free. The staff seem to enjoy working together - I was having a great time eavesdropping on them while I tried on clothes. I also saw two members of the staff help a girl who was trying to find the perfect "slutty but nice" top to match a skirt she was modeling for us all outside the fitting room. Humorous, but helpful at the same time. The cashier who checked me out was also really friendly and goofy.. made for a nice shopping experience. They've got a good selection, and unlike other stores, they carry more sizes than just 2 and 16. Sure, the clothes don't last forever, but they are priced accordingly. Have you ever been somewhere where you felt like your energy was being sucked out of you; like everyone in your immediate surroundings was a telepathic vampire? Neither had I until I walked into this monstrosity of a department store. My wife wanted to shop, as I expected, and I was prepared for the task ahead: to have her try on 16 things, only to buy 2 of them. I was simply in tow, and had to just accept the fact that I was going to watch her shop - something I've done before. However, upon entering this edifice, I immediately found myself struggling to cope. The workers were dressed in a sad array of eclectic, trying-too-hard fashion, hurrying around and frowning, as if they had put themselves in an ugly clothes-influenced malaise. They were snippy and unhelpful. My wife gathered a pile of clothes, and took them into the dressing room. There were no seats for me to wait on and check my twitter feed, the only task that I possibly could have looked forward to taking my attention away from the misery that surrounded me. So I stood, and leaned on a bra table. Finally, it was time to pay for the textiles which she had so carefully chosen. We stood in line on the second floor for 10 minutes, inching forward toward the eminent yet distant freedom that I presumed would come. With three patrons in front of us, and several behind us who had only been there for a couple minutes or less, the other line opened. Rather than offering to take WHO WAS NEXT IN LINE, they just allowed everyone in the back of the line to go ahead with their miserable order. This just isn't how it works, people. We left. Never to return. I'm sure this store will remain in business without our patronage. But in some small way, I hope it dies a slow and miserable financially-ruined death. Oh well. For a huge store that seems to be completely staffed, it seems like the employees are talking to one another half the time. And the only time they acknowledge you is to ask that you please hang your clothes on the hangers upon returning from the dressing rooms. When I went to pay for my purchase, not even a simple hello. The only time the cashier talked was to tell me how much my purchase was. She also managed to fit a full size skirt (not a mini) into a tiny bag typically meant for jewelry purchases. I understand it's a busy store on a busy street, but I still expect a tiny bit of customer service. I love H&M. Are their clothes high-quality? No, but unless you're wearing them while wrestling a bear, they'll last you long enough. Are they cheap? You bet. $6-10 tank tops and t-shirts and $20 skirts are definitely in my price range. And they're cute! Is there sizing a little screwy? Sure, but if you have that much of an issue with buying a size 12 rather than your normal 8 or 10, perhaps there are other things you should be doing besides shopping... Is this store crowded on the weekends? Of course, but if you live in the city, who in the HELL goes shopping on Michigan Avenue on a weekend??? Are you crazy? Go right after work, it's the only way. You just have to look at shopping at H&M as being on a mission. I go, grab what I know I'll like, hit the fitting room, hit the accessories area ($4 earrings? Great! Perhaps my lackluster experience at this location of H&M was due to the traffic on a Saturday afternoon. I have never encountered a more chaotic shopping experience in my life, and I worked in retail management for 2 years. I'm not sure what the training process is like for H&M employees, but obviously some of these associates were either not paying attention or are simply new retail workers. I was not greeted, followed up with, etc. In fact, I could not find a worker out of the sea of shoppers. For a store of this magnitude on a weekend, I would have expected there to be at least 1 associate for every 10/20 shoppers. It felt like there was 1 associate for every 40/50 shoppers. This means that there is no way quality customer service is being provided because they simply had no time and not enough staff to provide it. When I finally tracked down an associate to inquire about a pair of chinos, she told me what is on the shelf is all the have. Interesting enough, I found the chinos I needed from a different worker who got them for me in the back. The line for the dressing room was wrapped around the floor and so were the check out lines. I mean really, 2 cashiers for a line wrapping around the store? That's asinine. The only redeeming quality is that the clothes are cheap but stylish. In Chicago for a few days and did not bring enough warm clothes (damn those tiny carry-on suitcases!) so a trip to H&M on Michigan Ave was my first stop! This particular H&M is massive compared to the ones we have in STL - three levels, are you kidding me? I was in heaven for sure! Although most of the merchandise was the same as what I've seen in my neck of the woods, there was just more of it! Am a huge fan of the current "Designing Women sweater dress" look - think Suzanne Sugarbaker, complete with shoulder pads and thick belt- and H&M is a perfect place to get a girl started. Because I was there on a Monday afternoon, the checkout lines were non-existent and there was no wait in the dressing rooms, either. But I have been to this store before on a weekend and it can get CRAZY! So if you do go there on a Saturday, be ready to throw some elbows. read more

I love H & M because it allows me to get the trendy clothes I want while feeling more sophisticated and Euro than the 16 year old mall rats at Forever 21. Juuust kidding. I shop there too. I will admit that H&M merchandise is almost always at either extreme end of the spectrum. The clothes/accessories/shoes are REALLY freaking cute or incredibly fugly, surprisingly cheap or totally overpriced. However, the cute clothes aren't necessarily the most expensive nor are the ugliest the cheapest. It definitely depends on when you go and how much you want to dig. Either way, I have almost as much fun trying on the hideous outfits as I do pieces I might actually purchase. I also think this particular location is generally pretty well organized, although it can get a little insane and crowded during peak shopping times. The fitting rooms are also almost always free, and the attendants are not anal about how many items you bring in, which is always a plus. It's also always nice to find out an item is marked down once you get to the register- which has happened to me more than once! read more

Horrible customer service. First they will not post the stores phone number as they will not allow a customer to call to do an item check. The number given is a customer service number and they are not allowed to contact the store either. I won't be shopping H&M during the holidays since they do not value their customers. If they knew how to run their business correctly, they would have someone in the store providing customer service especially around the holidays. There are alot of other stores that do provide this service to their customers. Typically, I would give mucho stars to this inexpensive and fun store. With two teenage daughters, I appreciate the fashion bargain like none other! However, this store is under construction thus completely out of sorts at present. They had no functioning restroom, ridiculously lengthy lines at every checkout manned by cashiers who are clearly tired of the numerous complaints people are voicing. Further, the registers were malfunctioning so I waited another 20 minutes to checkout and get a receipt. Until the construction is complete, I'd recommend hitting up another location. read more

Overall, H &M has to be one of my favorite places to purchase clothing. They are trendy and super affordable. I never leave without finding something, even if it something I had not planned on finding. They are full of little treasures. I especially like their selection of accessories. This last time I found a bowed headband for less then $2. H & M on Michigan is always a fun experience. While it is always hopping and full of customers the staff are still helpful and able to check you out without much wait time at all. This H & M location is just like all the others - great location, great selection, friendly service - but you have to make your way past the overly excited teenagers to get a look at the goods. H & M has really fantastic, inexpensive items that swing more toward the trendy side. It's the perfect store to pick a few seasonal pieces, including jewelry and shoes, that you want to wear for a few times and then donate. The store on Michigan Avenue has three floors, with woman's clothing on the first floor, accessories, kids, and casual clothing on the second floor, and men's on the third floor. I visited on a Thursday morning and the place was fairly busy but not overwhelming like I'm sure it gets on weekends. I highly recommend going at off-peak times to avoid the crowds. Tip: hit up the registers on the second or third floor to avoid the longer lines. read more

Ok, I love this store because there is consistantly fresh and new clothes, but will they PLEASE stop shrinking the men's section?!?!? First, it was the 2nd floor and part of the entrance on the first. Then, it was just the 2nd floor. Then it was 3/4ths of the 2nd floor with the kids stuff in the back. Now, it's about 1/3 of the 2nd floor with 2/3rds of the 2nd floor being children's clothing. And, this is the largest H&M store in the state! I can't imagine how small the Men's section is, in the smaller ones. Half a rack of clothes and the bargain bin? Is there some sort of conspiracy to make us guys dress bad? I've always walked right past every H&M I've ever seen because nothing in the window ever appealed to me...that is, until yesterday! On my way to my bra fitting appointment, I saw the cutest outfit in the window and decided I was finally going to go into an H&M. Well someone forgot to tell me that it gets REALLY crowded, that the lines are always as long as the lines for rides at Great America, and that I wasn't going to be able to find ANYTHING I was looking for....including anyone who actually WORKED in the store... Needless to say, I saw some things that I would like to purchase, but I'll have to visit the local H&M at the mall, and pray that it's much more organized than this one. Always a stop when I go shopping. I love this location a lot because of the wide variety of clothing they have to offer from formal wear to sports and active wear. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The price is always perfect FOR THE QUALITY YOU GET and is definitely worth checking out. I was so excited when H&M finally arrived in Chicago a few years ago. No longer would I be drooling over my East Coast and European friends' finds. Going to H&M on the weekends makes me want to jam a pen in my eye, then head down the street to Tempo to have some french toast to make the pain feel better. I kid, I kid!! (I do love Tempo's french toast but that's another review. And I don't mind going to H&M but only during certain times, which I'm not going to share.) I have so-so feelings about H & M. Some days, I don't find anything I like; other times, I can find some simple things for work and/or everyday wear. Yeah, sizing kind of sucks but whatever. If you like it, then does it really matter? When it comes to costume wear or accessories though, this place comes through for me about 95% of the time. I once attended an 80's- themed New Year's eve party, and I got "like, my totally tubular outfit" here. Need a beret? They got it. Need colorful bangles/bracelets? They got 'em. Need leg warmers? I have a couple things from there that I've worn regulary for years and others that have fallen apart or I decided I decided I just didn't like that much when I got home. The selection is so large (at least for females) and there are always so many people there that the shopping experience can be overwhelming. Two tips: 1. Try everything on unless you don't mind returning things because if you don't there's a 75% chance that's what you'll end up doing. 2. Always buy a size larger. The sizes run small here. read more

Trendy peeps need trendy clothes.. and H&M is trendy! I have a hard time finding stuff at H&M all the time, it's usually pretty hit or miss. Sometimes they have a million of the most amazing things, and other times I can't find a thing. The price is pretty right.. I bought 2 $5 dollar shirts yesterday, that pretty much rules. How can you go wrong with super cheap and super cute?? I'm a huge fan of looking good and saving a buck or two.. and I find that H&M is much better quality than Forever 21 and it's about the same dollar. If you ever are in Amsterdam you MUST visit the H&M there. It's humongous and they have seriously the best stuff ever. Maybe Europeans just have better style?? Three levels of gloriousness. the top level is men's clothing, and the bottom 2 are women's. The middle level is more "funky", brightly colored clothing, and the bottom is more classic stuff. Be sure to check out the sale section on the second and first floors-- I scored some $1 nail polish and some faux stretch pearl bracelets for $1! I have a love/hate relationship with this store. First of all, if you ever shop here, don't expect to find high quality or expect that anything you saw yesterday will still be around. They sell trendy clothing, yes, but in my opinion most of it is absolutely hideous and isn't worth what they are charging, even if it is cheap. You will find some of the worst fashion mistakes in history at this store. Also, it's always very crowded and takes forever to check out. If you have at least an hour to waste then stop in here and you're sure to find something you'd like for a decent price. However, you do have to work at it because there is a lot of stuff which isn't all that well organized and so effort really needs to be put into searching for anything. One further thing that I dislike about this place - the sizing isn't consistent at all. I've worn all sorts of sizes from here, and things fit in all sorts of odd ways. Be sure to try stuff on before purchasing because you might find something odd like the sleeves are a foot too long because apparently that shirt was made for gumby or something. On the plus side, I have a ton of their basic tank tops which are only $6 each and that can't be beat. read more

Spent most of the time on the second floor as the first floor items were a bit pricey/not what I was looking for. They also had the fashion star outfits if you are interested in that. Pretty neat. Another thing that I liked was that there were guys shopping! Straight Guys! Haha.. ok, I know that isn't actually something about the store, but I loved seeing that. Chicago is great. I went to this H&M location after work on a weekday and it was fairly busy but totally manageable. I looked at the line for fitting rooms and didn't even bother, so I ended up putting back some shirts that I wasn't going to buy without trying them on. I agree with everyone else that they really need to have a mesh bag or something for shoppers to put all their items in instead of just having to hold them all. The cashier lines were also long on the first and third floor but I highly suggest you just go down to the second floor where the guys' checkout is and there was no wait - just walked up and paid. Bought a bunch of CHEAP and cute tank tops to go under my sweaters, and I picked up the cutest pair of wide leg long trousers that fit perfectly. I'll keep an eye on them in the wash to see if they shrink or get destroyed, but I'm happy with my purchases and will go back again! read more

No place to lock up bikes, but that's invariably a problem with any store along this stretch. If you're going by car you might want to circle the area west of here for spots you can sneak a car in for 20 minutes, any longer and you'll definitely get towed if you're not metered. Construction zones are always a good place to move a cone around to sneak a car in. I can count the things I've bought from H&M on one hand. A black cotton "motorcycle jacket," two of their super thin sweaters, a long sleeve white shirt, and bundles of the boxers. The fucked up thing is I hear all this great stuff about H&M having an abundance of accessible mens clothing in other areas from the homos I know-mos, however all that plagues this store is fucking streetwear and overpriced flannel with really ugly poly lining. The boxers are AMAZINGLY comfortable, that's about it. I wear the jacket all the time but its not exactly anything original. If I wanted to get a nice button down I'll go to Marshall's or Nordstrom's Rack and pick up a 20$ sherman.. plus the stitching blows donkey dicks on their shirts! I get the "cheap crap made wear it for a season" vibe they try to put out but I cannot in good faith wear most of it. Wearing their dressier shit (aka anything that isn't their super thin seams-fall-apart v neck shirts) makes me feel like a victim of a first year fashion school reject who can't be bothered to do anything right. 3 stars are simply for the boxer package deals they sometimes have, I think the best was 3 for 7 or 8$. The rest is kinda crap for men, hope they shape up. (UPDATE! Okay I lied, I just remembered I bought a pair of their cotton "jeans" which fit alright except the ass is eight sizes too big, and my girlfriend says I have an ample ass.. well beyond sagging territory. The first one I went to was in NYC, and after that it was this one. Then they started sprouting up all over the place and I went to the one in St. Louis a lot. I love cheap, basic clothes and this place usually delivers. Though, I want to say the selection has gotten worse over the years. I've found some of their clothes shrink RIDICULOUS amounts, making them unwearable. Buy a shirt that's a too big, then after washing it, it's too small to wear. AWESOME. I love H&M in general. I appreciate that this location has several floors, but the bathroom situation is less than desirable. There's no signs and the locations are very random. The basement for the men and the third floor (if I recall correctly) for the women. Are there more? No clue, because it seems to be a deeply guarded secret with their staff. I was kind of irritated because one of the changing room curtains, the one I was in, would not shut all the way and allowed any passerby to get a free show. I wasn't having it. I had to hold the curtain to avoid this from happening while trying to see if the clothes I was trying on looked good on me. Also, I understand the location being on Michigan Avenue allows for massive crowds, but I hate crowds. It was definitely crowded, but was able to navigate the store without getting frustrated. The only reason I ever go into H & M is if I need something cute to wear out for the weekend and I don't want to spend a whole lot of money. The prices are pretty good. If you can endure the long fitting room lines and unfriendly staff, it's usually a safe bet. The only thing that really bothers me about this store is the sizing. These sizes are all over the place. I absolutely have to try on everything I want to purchase here because I never know how things will fit. I have some crazy, wide Russian birthing hips, so I can pretty much forget about buying pants here unless I want to go up three sizes. If there's one place I love to go to, but SHUN on the weekends, it's H & M. Like Jennifer L. says "DO NOT GO HERE ON THE WEEKEND!" Seriously. With one, small, ever-so-tiny exception. Go there on a Friday night after 7:30pm. The crowd that usually shops here is out by then, and you pretty much have the place to yourself and about 50 other people. Same goes for any awesome warm night in Chicago. Otherwise - what you'll find here is a different set of clothes for cheaper - but you do get what you pay for. Just like has become habit from shopping at Urban Outfitters before they became stupid expensive, I check all shirts for buttons, hems, etc for any loose ends. Those kinds of things tend to rear their ugly heads after a few washings. But aside from that - this is a GREAT place to look sharper than casual for a less than overpriced range. Best item at H & M?
