I surprised my wife with this place for our anniversary. The place is very small and intimate and the music choice was great. Our server, I think their name was Sabrina, was incredibly welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu including the wine list and beers available. The kitchen is small so the food was a bit of a wait but I feel that added to the experience so my wife and I could reflect on our last 18 years of friendship and 13 years of marriage. Everything we ate was incredible. I am a very unadventurous person when it comes to food but my wife will try anything. She got me to try the Pate and Mousse appetizer and I could not find anything disagreeable with it. The Mushrooms on toast, as simple as it sounds, was a masterclass in how great mushrooms can be when treated well. I had the filet and my wife had the rack of lamb. Both were incredibly generous portions and cooked with perfection. During our meal, we couldn't help but notice how responsive Sabrina (again, I hope that was her name) was to everyone in the dining room and was offering incredibly insightful recommendations to other patrons with detailed descriptions of what the suggestions entailed (yes, I was being nosy). The entire experience was fantastic. The only drawback people should be aware of is that there isn't a cocktail menu, which I could imagine would be over-the-top ridiculously good, but Sabrina could sell you on a wine or other beverage that you will appreciate so it won't matter. The price for bread, two apps, two entrees, a desert, beers and wine, and a coffee had me thinking they left something off the tab, but in reality it is just an incredibly reasonable price for amazing food in a delightful atmosphere. I am very happy with my experience here and am looking forward to taking the drive out to Shelburne Falls to enjoy another. read more

A second visit; my wife and I enjoyed a memorable Valentine's dinner there in 2023. It's a cozy little place, with the ambience of a cherished French bistro. And a good experience last night, but three stars because I want Gypsy Apple to improve. $45 for mains asks for something special; it's the most restos ask in our area. A solid outing: food was professionally prepared and delicious. Filet mignon/ red wine and mushroom reduction, with asparagus and mashed potatoes x 2; seared salmon with lobster mashed potatoes; rack of lamb/ mint sauce and potato chimichurri. Local sautéed morel and lobsterhead mushrooms and crab cakes for apps. Vermouth/ sherry cocktails and glasses of Italian and Spanish red and white for dinner. We declined dessert, because after ordering the crème brulée were informed that the refrigerator broke down. Meats were all expertly cooked: a nice medium on the steaks, and a nice rare on the lamb, with good searing on both without affecting the juiciness within. Vegetables were the right texture and color, fresh green yet cooked just right. A good crabcake, and tasty mushrooms. Server was engaging and professional, removing bread crumbs before the mains arrived. A few constructive criticisms: - The room was empty when we arrived at 6 sharp, even though it soon filled up. But it took 1 hour for the appetizers to arrive, and another hour for dinner. 2 hours pass before your guests get to enjoy your wonderful food? Our dining companions, who were recognized and greeted warmly by our server as semi-regulars, said that you are getting this reputation. So three hours for a dinner of 3-4 courses was not an off-your-game evening. No free glass of wine to apologize for your delay? - The music, while not technically loud, was brash and intrusive. '90s hip-hop and random alt rock at a classy place, with many of your guests over the age of 60? I still have some Biggie lyrics memorized from my 20s, but an elevated experience is NOT where I want to remember college parties. You can do better; think of your guests. No music is best, but perhaps a little acoustic instrumental of any genre can work in the background, to muffle separate conversations. - The presentation of the food was uninspiring, and most of the accompagnements were mundane. For $100 per person for everything (drinks apps mains tax tip), you can do better than simply steaming/ sautéeing asparagus stalks. And they were not even broken in the middle - the spear is the best part, not the stalk. - Your mashed potatoes were a lost opportunity. Nothing outside of simply boiling one kind of potato with some butter and some salt? You can and should strive to inspire. Meat and potatoes can be elevated; use your creativity. Yes, for one of the plates, you used lobster mashed potatoes: bravo! But for the others, why not, for instance, some hazelnut oil? Or perhaps, a special kind of heirloom potato, or combination thereof? It can still be an effective template for the meat, without being intrusive. Also, please do not serve good bread and allow some of it to be frozen in the middle. We will be back, Gypsy Apple, because we support you, but please improve to the level of which you are capable. read more

Came here to seriously splash out for dinner. Very pricey so be prepared. Honestly I found the flavors to be too subtle for me. I have had much tastier food at other places. The name is also problematic. The service was fantastic but despite the beautiful decor the music sounds like a tinny stereo being played far away in the back kitchen and there is a machine that starts rumbling and vibrating under your feet every so often which is odd and distracting. Like the kitchen started up a blender underneath you. I would suggest dialing down the prices or upping the flavor. I didn't find it memorable. I can't say enough about the service though. This is small town America in the western part of Massachusetts. I did not expect to walk into what felt like a cafe in France. The menu is limited to a few things but every flavor pallet will be satisfied. The plates were perfect in portion and by design culinary desirable but visually artistic. Really amazing place. Birthday dinner for five on a Sunday night. I do not know how they turn out all the food from such a small kitchen. The chef apparently also bakes the bread and makes the desserts. We opened with mushroom toast and the pate platter to share. Both excellent, but the pate platter is exceptional. Also, the asparagus soup (stunning). Two fillets, two duck, one pork chop for mains. The filets were ordered med-rare and came out cooked to perfection. Pork and duck perfect. All came with sides of potatoes or asparagus or ramps and fiddleheads - it's that time of year. We share three desserts: banana cheesecake (the best), creme brulee, and a fudge cake/mocha ice cream explosion. Wonderful. They also do decaf espresso drinks (we had three). Oh, the opening bread is the best, the butter and olive tapenade fantastic. We only have one wine at the table. Overall, about $60 person (less tip), and worth every, single cent. This is the best restaurant in the world! I really don't want to tell anyone, because it is small, and I would like to be able to get a table when I would like one. If you hear people say that it isn't just amazing, it has to be that they want it to themselves. I have to be fair, so that others can share the same joy that I have when dining there. I have dined there three times, and each experience has been perfection. My husband and I just celebrated our 39th anniversary there tonight. It was wonderful. The filet mignon with mushroom demi glacé sauce is tender and so flavorful. The goat cheese cheesecake is luscious and creamy with a crispy crust. Gypsy Apple Bistro came highly recommended and did not disappoint! Upon hearing about it, I decided that I wanted to go here for my birthday. We got to Shelburne Falls early and went to a few shops. I mentioned that we were going her for dinner and everyone positively gushed about the food, the atmosphere, the service. "You're going to love it" they said!! We had reservations but arrived early. We were immediately seated at a table for 2 and offered flat or sparkling water. What a treat already! The 2 servers were friendly and accommodating. They patiently answered questions about the offerings and made recommendations, while being sure to add that everything on the menu was delicious! We ordered a beer and low alcohol Negroni. Yum. Our appetizer was a special gumbo with chunks of local kielbasa, chicken abs shrimp. The sauce was smoky with mild heat. It was spectacular. It was my favorite course of the night. Just perfect. For entrees we ordered a Faroe Island salmon (catch of the day) and a duck dish. Both were generous, but not huge. They were cooked beautifully with a nice sear. The asparagus that accompanied the salmon was the most tender and succulent I've ever eaten!! The desserts were wonderful, and they put a candle in mine but thankfully did not sing to me!!! The space is small and intimate. We chatted with some "neighbors' but not all. The servers checked in often in a very friendly and unobtrusive way. We drove an hour to eat there for a very special birthday celebration. We were greeted with rudeness and told not once but twice our table was not ready even though it was all ready for seating. We were told to leave and basically come back in 10 minutes. We also asked about having a special cake plated that we had made, expecting perhaps a small fee, instead the woman exclaimed it would be $5 per person and they were a nut free establishment so basically they said no. At that point I should have said forget the reservation there are many better and more friendly and professional dining venues in most areas. I was appalled by the hostess/waitress's behavior and communication. We were finally offered a table, the dinner itself was good but the service was terrible, same person for the full small dining room. What should have been a memorable evening was not because of the poor treatment and rudeness. Holy wowza!!! My boyfriend has lived in the area for years and has always wanted to go here so we finally went one Friday night. The food was beyond amazing. I had some fish cake appetizer and a veggie pasta entree. My boyfriend had a tartar appetizer and a fish dinner and it was amazing. Love how they tailor their food to the night and season. As an Eco-Dietitian, I would love to see this restaurant /chef take the lead and offer more plant-based protein options for those who are working to eat less meat for environmental reasons. Please offer something with beans or lentils so we don't leave hungry after the eggplant dish. Livestock production is a huge contributor to greenhouse gasses and we have an amazing opportunity as consumers and producers to make a difference with increasing the demand for soil-building, eco-friendly and nutritious legumes! Gypsy Apple is a delight! A hidden find! It's in the quaint town of Shelburne Falls, and is artistry at its best! At Gypsy Apple Bistro, there is great attention to detail in the ambiance: it's a small room with amber lighting, comfortable tables (not the place for a big group or kids, for sure); an incredible, (adult) menu, a good selection of beer and wine by glass or bottle, and divine food. The bread, which is imported (probably in dough form) from a place in Saratoga, NY, by chef, Michael, is incredible: slightly chewy, served piping hot, moist and fluffy. It's served with an olive-caper tapenade and sweet, delicious butter in a beautiful pink glass. We ordered 2 entrees, which came with salads (both for around $25, total). The lettuce, which is from local farms, was soft and tender in a delightfully-refreshing house vinaigrette. Our entrees: a rainbow trout in sherry butter with mashed potatoes and fried capers was delicate, light, and flavorful. Perfectly baked. My partner's chicken in cream sherry with mushrooms was rich, melt-in-the-mouth pieces of chicken on the bone, also with mashed potatoes (which were smooth as silk) and fresh, perfectly al dente asparagus. Each was plated beautifully. Truly art-on-a-plate. Our server was attentive, appearing at just the right moments to check in, was friendly and also gave us just the right amount of space. I never had to answer with my mouth full! ;) The receipt was handwritten on black paper with silver metal ink. Again, the touches of Gypsy Apple are a delight: artsy, and lovely, no detail left to chance. I can't imagine a better way to spend a romantic evening. OK. The space is small, with only about 20 seats. The tables are a bit tight. The menu only offers 4 to 6 entrees. BUT I'm not going to cry foul when a Bistro is true to its name and the food and service are all 5 star. The decor and atmosphere (rich colors, soft music, appropriately styled accents are just what you want in a romantic place. The lighting is soft and glowing, not bright and in your face. The service was impeccable and the wine pairings we were recommended were spot on. The olive tapenade and fresh bread were the perfect opener. My steak was done exactly as ordered and the sauce was delicately flavored. Just enough to let the meat sing with every bite. Definately call the afternoon before to get a reservation. The place is small and walk ins were definately turned away. (At first we thought they were closing early since there were two tables open at the time and they stayed open until about 45 minutes later when a party came in that filled them up.) I really appreciated seeing that. It's nice to know this isn't a a business that will take a chance on having to have a true reservation wait just to squeeze in another seating for the evening. The prices are on the higher side, but perfectly reasonable for the quality of food. Highly recommended for a special date night. read more

Our server was calm, pleasant, knowledgeable, capable, respectful, not at all overbearing, just overall great. We loved her. Ambiance: It is a small bistro, so neighboring tables are tightly knit. But some soft music, richly painted walls, locally made pottery, elegantly decorated tabletops, candlelight, and lovely travel pictures make for a soothing environment. Location: Right in the center of culture-rich Shelburne Falls. Allow this restaurant to lure you in. If it is a long drive in, fear not, come early as there is much to see and enjoy in the neighborhood and this restaurant is in the thick of it. The tiny town of Shelburne Falls is most noted for its Bridge of Flowers, and that main attraction must be why it hosts quite a few good shops and restaurants. I found promising reviews on Gypsy Apple through TripAdvisor, Chowhound, and a review (http://www.valleyadvocate.com/article.cfm?aid=2754). My qualified three stars is partly my fault--I really hate sending food back, so the fact that I ate a badly executed entree was partly my choice. First, some restaurant details: --wood-paneled, intimate interior and very limited seating means you gotta call to make reservations --French-influenced cuisine that includes seafood, meats and vegetables Our meal comprised soup, appetizers (tomato soup, crab cake, scallop), and an entree of housemade gnocchi with assorted mushrooms. I'm less partial to cream-based, richer sauces, but Gypsy Apple Bistro has a light fresh touch, and the ingredients were spot on. The problem came with the handcrafted gnocchi, AKA hard chewy nuggets. We were frankly perplexed that such a restaurant could let this dish out, so I asked the waitress if the gnocchi was supposed to be that way. (Hey, I don't know: I'm on vacation, I don't want to impose my gnocchi standards learned in Milan or the Bay Area. Maybe Shelburne Falls likes pasta that fights back.) The waitress immediately offered to take it back, so here's where I'm at fault: I said hmmm, no, check with the chef (yeah, passive-aggressive dining behavior approach). The waitress returns to say the chef tried HIS batch and it was fine. He should've sampled OUR batch. My husband was really irked (he's a send-it-back type), so we swapped meals and I tried to eat the gnocchi, and couldn't. (The assorted mushrooms were damn good tho.) My husband was still grouchy but I ordered the chocolate dessert (which turns out to be an exquisite). Then, the waitress (who probably stabbed at the leftover gnocchi nuggets) says upon second look, she agrees the entree hadn't been up to snuff, and would credit us for it. So, the customer service did finally work out, although I'm not sure if it was more the waitress or the chef (I assume someone had to sign off on her action). For such a tiny restaurant, it would've been a nice gesture for the chef to emerge and say some words--no effusive apology, just an acknowledgment that some things don't work out, thanks for sticking it out. Definitely worth trying, although maybe not so much the pasta. read more

Well-balanced plates, well-plated and gracious portions; don't believe reviews to the contrary. I'm not a fierce gourmet; if you are, there's another review that might better inform. It's not five-star among five-star restaurants. Still this place holds up really well; it is among the top Pioneer Valley eats. It's a great meal with a small, lovely selection of dishes. Place settings are attractive, decor pretty and well done. There is nothing dull, missing, or off. Do make reservations; there were 7 tables, only three of which were four-topped this eve. Probably one of the best dinner locations between Springfield, MA and the Vermont line. This guy's cooking and atmosphere is an art in the highest sense. From the service to the food quality, it's an enjoyable place to dine. I have visited a number of times over recent years, and most recently, a few months back. My only regret here is that they do not do their brunch anymore. They have the best beef hash dish, this side of the Atlantic. You can't lose here. read more

Quiet, elegant dinner so we were in for the full spectrum dining experience starting with a simple Monmouseau brut etoile and pate followed by the papardelli as appetizers. All around, between the four of us, we had Caesar salad, filet mignon (delicious, tho sauce a bit too salty), rack of lamb (1 medium & 1 rare - both to perfection) & soup du jour (a curried fish soup). With the exception of the aforementioned sauce, all were delicious! We enjoyed a red wine with our meal (wish I could recall which). The service by the Mater'd and wait staff was excellent and anticipated our wishes. I would recommend and plan to return in the future read more
