I have heard of Great Falls Harvest over the years but have never tried it (only because we live next to Northampton where great restaurants are in our backyard). I have heard not to go if you are in a hurry. But we were not in a hurry, and anyway, we had the place to ourselves because it was an odd time. Their Harvest board of cheeses, bread, smoked salmon, and other goodies was delicious, plated beautifully, with ultra fresh vegetables and generous portions. This place is bizarre. We walked in and were immediately told, "our food takes a LONG time--like an hour. And there are people ahead of you." Um, okay. They weren't busy, so it seemed a little strange. We strategized on our order, getting a soup, cheese plate and salad, thinking those would come out more quickly, then some duck confit tostadas. But true to her word, we didn't see any food for an hour. I guess they don't prep anything ahead of time? You'd think the cheese plate at least would be prepped. Or they'd have soup ready to go. And what was brought was strange. The "creamy mushroom soup" was a tomato-based curry. The "cheese plate" consisted of 6 small ice cold slices of Brie served with a cup of canned green pitted olives and some weird Indian flatbread. The salad was...a salad. One that took an hour, but a salad. Then the tostadas were basically nachos with a minuscule amount of duck confit buried amid the cheese. The lady running the front of house was very very nice. Good selection of beers. They also have wines, no cocktails. The large plates that we saw come out looked good, and seemed very big. The appetizer game though needs a ton of work. Aside from the timing issues, which seem ridiculous when you're talking about a soup, salad and cheese plate (though she did warn us), billing something as a cheese plate then offering a small amount of unripened Brie without even proper bread to put it on is unforgivable. She should have told us that it was not a cheese selection, but rather Brie assembled with no care at all. Wish I could have liked this place but it seemed like they are radically understaffed and untrained in kitchen service. Amateur hour, for sure. Won't be back. A gem in the Turners restaurant scene! The menu is spare, yet the options are all equal parts fresh, tasty and satisfying. On our most recent visit, my partner had the salmon sesame C, and I had the Amalthea's Dinner with tofu. We may have moaned a couple of times. The combination of flavors and textures was like an art form. Wine list will dazzle you. Dessert is a must--we had the dark chocolate pecan brownie with a dollop of something fabulous on top. We were visiting in the area and decided to stop at this restaurant. It was almost closing time but they were kind enough to serve us. The restaurant itself was very cozy and rustic in appearance and the service was excellent. My friend had the lamb mushroom ravioli special which almost brought her to tears. She had never had lamb before and certainly not in a ravioli. The sauce was exquisite with flavor and texture and she declared it was the best meal she had ever eaten. We had started with the harvest board with cheeses and meats. I felt it was a little meager and could have included more cheeses and meats for the money but it was good. My other friend had the chicken with root vegetables. It was tender and well seasoned and the root vegetables were cooked to perfection. I had the root vegetables without meat and it was a full meal and I took the rest home. I love root vegetables and the way they were cooked and served was excellent. This is the go-to date night location for my partner and I. First of all, I recommend setting aside at least two hours for dinner. The chef/owner cooks everything to order, so your food will take a while on a busy night. Given that, relax and enjoy yourselves while you're there. Order some wine or local beer, get an appetizer, (I recommend the Artisan Board) and enjoy the homey feel of the restaurant while you wait for your entrees. The bar booths come with chess, and there is a pool table and piano in the other room. The owners of the restaurant are a delight. Bridgette is always a treat to talk to. She knows exactly where each ingredient comes from and would love to tell you about just how delicious the food you're about to eat is going to be. Chris, the chef, is very personable and accommodating, as well. We once came with a guest who has a severe gluten allergy, but it was no problem to work around that with advanced notice. Finally, the food. We've never had an unsatisfying meal at Great Falls Harvest, and we've been fairly frequent customers for almost 7 years. All of the food comes from locally-sourced vendors, so the menu is constantly changing depending on what's in season. The staple dishes are top-notch, but the nightly specials are truly divine. The chef is always experimenting with different preparations; for example, last year we got lucky and showed up on a night they were serving roasted goat (it was delicious!). The portion sizes are quite large, as well. I always feel like I get my money's worth considering I have leftovers for the next day, more often than not. I would give Great Falls Harvest my highest recommendation. Don't come here expecting to rush through a meal or if you're on a time crunch. Come here expecting a relaxing dining experience with fantastic food, a great wine selection, and good conversation because that's exactly what you'll get. read more

Let me preface this by saying I don't like writing crap reviews; I'd prefer to handle things in person and at that time. Having worked in the service industry for years, I understand how bad reviews/customers can be the bane of a great restaurant. However, this was SO bad, it merits letting the world know. We had made a reservation for 5:30 with the intent of seeing a show at the Shea Theater (a block away) at 7:30. A traffic accident took us way out of our way, so we called asking if our reservation could be moved and would we still be accommodated at 6 pm for the 7:30 show. They said they were busy, but that it wouldn't be an issue. We showed up a bit before 6 and seated promptly. This is the end of where things were pleasant. We asked once again if we'd be able to get food/drinks in time for the show and were assured that it was fine. For a restaurant with approximately 15-20 two-tops and four-tops in total plus 6-8 seats at the bar, they weren't all that busy. So, we attempt to order drinks. They only had one beer that we requested multiple of. The server knew exactly zero about the local brews that were on tap so we just took a stab at it. We ordered a flat bread pizza as an appetizer, and having been informed that the food takes around 45 minutes to prepare, went ahead and ordered our main course as well. The pizza came out fairly quickly and had a decent flavor profile but it was hardly flatbread. In fact, it was quite doughy. That's the extent of our food experience as everything goes downhill in a hurry from here. After ordering another round of drinks, about 45 minutes have gone by with no check-ins from the server and no sign of our food. At about an hour in, we finally call the server over and ask when the food will be out as we've only got about 30 minutes before the show starts. She sends the owner of the restaurant over, Bridgette, to inform us that their food takes a long time to prepare and it takes about 80 minutes to complete (up from the 45 minutes quoted earlier) and that he's working hard and it will be out soon. She lets us know they've been very busy and it takes longer. The place is half empty so I have no idea why she thinks they're busy. We wait another 15 minutes and now we've got 15 minutes until the show starts and we really can't wait any longer. We ask the server over to pay for our drinks and appetizer. She brings us the check and boxes. The check includes the total for the meal we've waited for over an hour to receive (and haven't received!) and won't have time to eat. This is completely unacceptable. I am a reasonable person. I am fine with paying for the goods we've already consumed, but I flatly refuse to pay for a restaurant's incompetence and foresight. At this point Bridgette returns and starts to get aggressive with my family and let us know "you can just leave and it's fine if you want to screw us" very loudly and to the whole establishment. The unprofessional behavior from this woman was astonishing. She continued to berate my father and mother who are happy to pay for what we actually got but not for something we won't have time to consume nor do we actually want at this point. The chef comes out and chastises us for wasting food. UNREAL. Is it really acceptable to NOT preface your meal by saying it takes an ungodly amount of time to make chicken and rice in a tiny restaurant because for some reason they weren't ready for a predictable rush? That's your problem, not mine. I've eaten at Michelin restaurants with less pretension and much faster service. I wish I could tell you how the main course was, but I can't. We were served nothing but a hostile attitude from a coarse and dour woman and her inept staff. I do not recommend. Edit: Hi, Bridget C. At first glance we were a bit underwhelmed and weren't sure this was the place for us. But it was the place for us because the food was delicious and our waitress was one of a kind too. There was a minor snafu with one of us getting the wrong meal and you know what? It didn't matter because it was still super tasty! The food MAY be great but I will never know. When my friends and I arrived the place was very slow. We got seated right away and started looking for our drinks o order. The drink were fine and the order taking was perfect. The waitress was fine. BUT THEN about 45 min later when we stopped talking o each other we realized that it had been a while. Most restaurants when the orders take a while and the customer asks the server/hostess/owner apologizes and let you know when the food was coming. ALSO most restaurants serve something before the meal.... NOTHING! When we asked one of the servers about where our food was all she wanted to do was argue with us. We didn't Order that long ago..... it's busy...... we were wrong and she can prove it..... orders take 45 min to and hour to serve.... argue argue argue. We chose to cancel our order and leave. I went to pay for the drinks while the rest of the party proceeded to leave and the server. (Which turned out to be the owner) to continue to argue and be hostile. The check for the sinks was shoved at me and then she left. Someone else that worked there finally helped me pay and then the most amazon thing happened. The cook came out to add to the arguing. They were rude, the didn't care how they treated us. They even snapped at another party that asked about their food because they were going to a show at the Shea and the owners response was "ya so is everyone else here" I had heard good things but I will never go again and will tell anyone about my experience. read more

I was not sure what to expect here, but we finally tried GFH last night and were extremely pleasantly surprised. I had a whitefish with local cheese, sundried tomatoes, and greens with jasmine rice. It was creative and unique but it also really worked. It tasted very fresh and had many subtle flavors. I really enjoyed it. The goat cheese cheesecake with pistachio crust was the best cheesecake I can remember eating, ever. Their creative use of locally sourced ingredients, including many stellar local cheeses, was above and beyond the usual. I didn't have any vegetarian, vegan or GF dishes specifically, but they had *many* to choose from. Our meal last night was on par with other local fancier fare like The Night Kitchen (*sniff*) and The Blue Heron. I have absolutely no idea what that reviewer's "rude waitress" problem was. The staff was warm, kind, and welcoming, and we had a great time. Note: they don't have a full bar as of this time. But that's no problem, because they are right next door to one of the best bars in Franklin County, The Rendezvous. And they are a couple blocks from the epically awesome store, LOOT. If you're going on a date here, I highly recommend LOOT, followed by a drink at the Vous, and then dinner at Harvest. We were curious and so we went in. When we arrived we were happy to find a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Great ambiance! The owner took cake of us that night, and she will probably take care of you too if u go because this is a ma' and pa' place, folks. The menu was exquisite, but we managed to pick only 3 things: a board, the salmon with oriental flavors and the chicken with indian flavors. It. Was. Amazing. I've eaten here for brunches, dinners and last night for their special event Valentine dinner menu. All three meals exceeded my expectations. The food is almost magically produced by a line of only a sous-chef and head chef. The front of the house is typically run in an equally intimate two person team. However, the quality and authenticity of the experience of this four person team is strikingly memorable. This is the old-timey quality standard of fine dining. The service is personal, intimate and timely. The food is hearty, perfectly seasoned, and innovative but also displays the talent and deft hand of a classically trained chef. The beers are local and delicious. I've never been served a glass of wine I didn't feel was a value be it the house white, or the most expensive bottle. Equally powerful as the food and the experience is the knowledge that when you come here you are contributing to a business that represents the ethics of the quintessential small town fine dining restaurant. Despite the thin margins of the industry, the owners always chip in to host the community events vital to the small mill-town of which they call home. Despite the difficulty of remaining open in the slower winters, some of my favorite meals have been in the coldest winter nights here in Turners Falls. If you engage this restaurant as it is meant to be done; with a smile, no pretensions, with a warm heart, what you get in return will be more than you could ever expect. If your needs are blazing fast service, a blooming onion, or a pitcher of bud light, you'll likely leave disappointed. If you don't enjoy food seasoned aggressively (and properly) you might be surprised by the flavors you'll enjoy here. Great food! We dined there pretty regularly before the shutdown but since then we get takeout almost every weekend. You always feel like you are eating healthy, while indulging in a satisfying meal. My go-to is the rice, beans, and greens dish with chicken, but the specials are great too. I always have some leftover for lunch. The chef is a master at taking simple, locally-sourced food and making it something special. We were going to see a show at the Shea Theater, which is right across the street, and called ahead for a reservation. When we called, they asked us if we were going to the show, because they wanted to make sure we would be out in plenty of time. I appreciated that at the time. We arrived for the reservation a few minutes early, got seated, and then waited for over 50 minutes, with no sign of food. Meanwhile, a huge line started forming across the street for the show at the Shea. We finally asked for the check and our food - which still hadn't come out - to go. As the waitress dumped our food into containers, she kept telling us, "I didn't want you to have to wait in line for the theater forever." We pointed to the line snaking across the corner and explained that it was general seating, and we wanted to get seats. The waitress kept repeating that she didn't want us to have to wait in line. I would have appreciated the opportunity to make that decision for myself, rather than waiting for almost an hour for food, when we deliberately made a reservation that should have given us plenty of time to eat and get in line. I can't say how the food at the restaurant is, because I haven't had it yet. It's sitting in the car while I'm at the back of a half-block-long line. And waited and waited for our meals. Nearly an hour and the place wasn't busy. No explanation from server. No bread, no olives, not even a carrot stick in the meantime. I ordered the quail entree. Quail is a tiny bird. Just a few bites and it's gone. Everywhere I have ever gone where its served, it's a brace of quail. Meaning two quail. If it's an appetizer, one quail. But here the entree was one little quail. Unacceptable and chintzy. Charge a few bucks more, but make it a brace of quail. The little quail was tasty but kind of overcooked. The potato beet kale hash that accompanied it was nicely conceived but bland. Could have used some seasoning. So there you have it. The place can easily be 4-5 stars if they just pay attention: 1. Give some bread or something to munch on 2. Don't take so damn long to get the food out of the kitchen. 3. Understand that a quail entree is a brace of quail. What a delightful surprise to come upon this restaurant in the quiet hamlet of Turners Falls. We were planning to see our grand daughter in a play (matinee) at the Shea Theater, which is around the corner, and we needed to find a good restaurant close by for a family get together of 9 people. I had the read the reviews for the The Great Falls Harvest and decided to take a chance, but we never expected for all 9 of us to be blown away by one fabulous dish after another. One important piece of advice: give yourself 2 hours to eat so that you are not tense about the meal taking too long, especially if you have plans to get somewhere. Fortunately we did that, so we weren't bothered by the pace. Now about the food. A fortunate and clever thing they do is offer you all the menus they have, so your choices are many. We were there for brunch, but we could also order off the lunch and dinner menus. The olive/cheese board that we ordered as an appetizer came with hot olives, tapas-style, delicious, chewy bread, and a memorable nutty flavored cheese - so good. One of us had the soup which was a Thai coconut milk,seafood stew filled with shredded vegetables and fish. It was so delicious that we kept passing it around marveling at the texture and aroma of this wonderful concoction. A few of us ordered the tofu scramble served over a vegetable hash. I thought this was a risky dish to order because sometimes tofu can be too soft and unappetizing. But what we got was a sensational spicy mixture of sauteed minced vegetables and tofu that was golden brown and coated with truffle oil. Really a memorable dish. The large salad topped with baked salmon, and the same dish topped with chicken was praised by 2 people as one of the best salads they ever had. The only slightly imperfect dish was the poached eggs, "Eggs Anne," because the eggs were a bit overcooked and not runny, as my husband and daughter would have liked, but they still thought the dish was wonderful. So here is a great discovery in this unassuming town, and we all want to return someday. There is a pool table in an adjacent room - another treat in this comfortable restaurant - and our waitress was top notch. Something Truly Special There are various reasons to like a restaurant - the furnishings and appointments, the service and, of course, the food. For me, a self-professed foodie, the first, second and last reason is the food. The Great Falls Harvest Restaurant wins on all three reasons, but I was most impressed with the originality and quality of the dining offerings, which I will describe in loving detail in a moment. The restaurant is on the main street of Turner's Falls, a picturesque little town on the Connecticut River. The restaurant itself is an attractive brick building nicely landscaped. The interior is bright, charming and quite welcoming. The service we encountered was outstanding. We were served by Bridgette Chaffee, a co-owner of the restaurant. When I described my taste in beer, she recommended a local, highly hopped ale that was more than satisfactory. When I later asked her to recommend a wine to go with my beef, she recommended a Portuguese wine that we liked so well that we have made a note of it and plan to buy more ourselves. Bridgette was also warm and charming even when dividing her time between us and other diners. Almost all food is locally sourced and organic and the Chef and owner, Chris Menegoni, has a remarkable skill set in the kitchen. My wife had the Sesame C - Turmeric rice sautéed in sesame oil with cabbage, carrots, onions and cilantro topped with ginger chili honey glaze and accompanied by Misty Knoll chicken. I, true to my carnivorous nature, had braised organic Tilldale beef served over garlic mashed potatoes. The beef was braised for 18 to 20 hours and served with local snap peas. It was served with a vegetable and beef bisque that had been reduced. My vegetarian daughter opted for the Cajun - Red rice with bacon, greens, cumin roasted tomato, cilantro lime cream topped with chipotle molasses and accompanied by Vermont soy tofu. I enjoyed my dish enormously and the garlic mashed potatoes rank among the very best I have ever had. Then, with permission, I sampled my wife's Asian style dish and my daughter's Cajun dish, eschewing only the tofu. I can cheerfully pronounce each dish highly original and very delicious. Also, when the bill came, it was very reasonable. I was also impressed by the range of daily specials that the chef had prepared. These included a vegetable and beef bisque and some chevre cheese. A smoked salmon and truffle infused salami with a brie like cheese and a new Wensleydale. An additional appetizer was a local cheese breaded with organic cornmeal and fried in olive oil with a spicy marinara. The flatbread special was ground local goat meat with local cheese, fresh greens and roasted garlic baked on a sourdough flatbread. The pasta of the day was a cannelloni with local herbs and vegetables local cream cheese and Italian herbs as well in a creamy lemon sauce. Whew! Additionally, there were several other entrees that I found very appealing, and the only way to reduce my unrequited pangs, is to return again ... soon. This place has the best food in Turners Falls, and their small plates and appetizers are top notch for anywhere. They also have the most earnest staff around, which isn't something you necessarily expect in a hip place like this! read more

Went to Great Falls Harvest recently with a group of six to celebrate my brother's 65th birthday. We had an amazing meal! All the entrees were beautifully crafted--locally sourced and incredibly flavorful. All entrees start off vegetarian, with options to add chicken, salmon, tofu, beef, or pork--again all locally sourced. I had the Farm and Forage which the menu describes as: "roasted roots, squash and potato with bacon braised kale and mushrooms topped with balsamic reduction" and I added the Misty Knoll roasted chicken. It was tremendous--very flavorful and roasted to perfection. I paired it with Berkshire Brewery coffee porter which was ideal. Great Falls Harvest has a beer and wine license, and offered a nice selection of local craft beer and a decent wine list. The waitstaff was exceptionally attentive and engaging. We had an early reservation for 5:30 and we were among the first parties in the dining room. As we enjoyed a very leisurely experience, the dining room filled with other diners so that by the time we were leaving the entire restaurant was filled. A culinary delight for this area. With a sister that's a chef and an eclectic cook myself, I'm picky about where I eat. Harvest came highly recommended by friends. The service was great. Decent wine choices and a very diverse menu. No room for dessert this time. Will definitely return. Check it out if your in the area. read more
