Most offer mediocre lighting, poor insect traffic, and zero ambiance. Hope & Olive, however, continues to set the gold standard for frog fine dining. I arrived yesterday evening and secured a prime outdoor window-side table (vertical seating available for amphibian guests). The view was excellent, featuring lush greenery, attentive human patrons, and a climate-controlled observation deck. The appetizer selection was promising. Several small flying items passed through the area, but I decided to hold out for something more substantial. Excellent decision. Approximately midway through service, an enormous grasshopper practically launched itself onto a decorative hanging orb provided by management. I was immediately impressed by Hope & Olive's commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The entrée did put up a bit of a struggle. However, after a brief period of strategic positioning, professional stalking, and one lightning-fast procurement maneuver, I was able to enjoy the entire grasshopper. Portions are very generous. In fact, the meal was nearly as long as I am. Service was outstanding. The nearby humans appeared fascinated by my dining experience and refrained from interrupting me while I consumed an insect roughly the size of a canoe. After dinner, comfortably stuffed, I retired to the interior of the decorative orb for what can only be described as a food coma. It served as an excellent after-dinner lounge. As for the human food, judging from the smiles, laughter, and complete lack of attempts to steal my grasshopper, it appeared to be quite good as well. I rolled into hoping all of for lunch. It wasn't a full menu but boy was it good? I started off with the sweet potato soup, a cup of soup for four bucks. It's the best deal in the world... The soup was delicious. Hardy and homemade. I paired that with a sour. Today's sour was strawberry and lemon and it had a great taste for a light lunch. The sandwich I chose was a panini of a vegetable melt mushrooms, broccolini, shallots and a great melted cheese along with a fresh salad with a light vinaigrette... The food was excellent. The service was great. When I unfurled my setup I dropped a fork. The host actually heard it fall and brought me a new setup before I could pick up the dropped fork. Our server was Audrey and she was very attentive without being annoying. Checked in, brought us more water regularly, and was very friendly. Portions were good, menu was great for an omnivore, vegetarian, pescatarian and a flexitarian. It is a bit loud when crowded but not outrageously so. The ingredients are local and in season and the dishes are made so very well that they'll be unforgettable for you. Everything was so good. Wings were crispy, juicy and so so tasty. The sauce of the night was sweet chili -- sticky yummy goodness is all I got to say. I got the mustard pork tenderloin.. amazing. And the buttermilk sweet potato mash that it came was fluffy, buttery and complimented the meat well. We love a good cocktail and they were all very well balanced: pineapple old fashioned, coconut daiquiri & a French spritz (a weekly special cocktail). The waitress was great and gave nice recommendations not only of the menu but places to visit while we are in the area. We stopped in about 15 minutes before closing after a long morning of helping my daughter move. We were starving and grumpy but were immediately greeted and put at ease that we would be able to eat quickly. The cherry lemonade was delicious!! We got the veggie fritters and two crab BLTs and a salad and all were outstanding! Our waiter was friendly and helpful. The food was really shockingly delicious!! Every little bit from the presentation to the sauces and garnishes were the best possible version of what they could be. We stopped at Hope & Olive for a meal after a long day trip to the area. We went right after they opened, so we were able to get a table with no issue. The restaurant for whatever reason kind of smelled like car oil?? But once we got to our table the smell was not as strong and it really didn't bother us. Maybe an isolated thing happened because as we were leaving I didn't really notice that smell again. Our waitress was very kind and accommodating, but service took a while. We were there at our table for two hours and we felt like we were rushing the waitress at the end. I completely understand that some restaurants don't want to rush people and make them feel like they have to turn over the table to another guest, but we were there to eat and leave, so we didn't really want all of the extra down time. Our meals took a long time to come out. We had 4 people at our table and we watched as a few tables of two sat after us, and were served before us. Upon receiving our food, the hamburger was not really hot and seemed like it was sitting under the warmer for a while. I ordered Pasta Fasulo, which appeared to be like a pasta primavera if you read the description on the menu, but the way the waitress pronounced the dish sounded like Pasta Fagioli, which this was not in any way. Also, I saw that the menu item had "gf" (gluten free) next to it, but I assumed they would use regular pasta but they had gluten-free pasta if requested. The pasta I received definitely seemed to be gluten-free because the texture was off and the pasta was breaking apart. I just thought the menu could have been more clear. I understand my review sounds very critical. By no means did we have an absolutely bad experience and a bad meal. For our table, the food and the experience was just ok, but we were a bit disappointed after the fabulous reviews on Yelp and after receiving this recommendation from a local. read more

The reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that I found out when I got the bill that they charged me $4.00 for a seltzer AND a additional $4 for a refill (I feel the server should have warned me). Very odd experience here. The place was busy but also well-staffed. The waiter took 15 minutes to bring menus, then another 10 to bring coffee, which was nearly cold. Waited another 10 minutes for him to not come back by but to come close enough so I could flag him down, to ask for more coffee and if we could order. He seemed irritated with every question we asked, as if it was the 10th time we'd asked it and were somehow being impatient. Even ordering the meal itself, as we said each thing, he sounded irritated and incredulous, saying, "Yeah... yeah... I'll bring it when I come back to the table... " Just very tense for some reason. Then both our omelets had ingredients missing and we'd only asked for two each. The one ingredient my omelet did have--onions--were not caramelized but nearly raw; it was awful but I did not bother to try to send it back as it would have meant yet more waiting and snippy waiter attitude. My friend's toast didn't come with his omelet, and we had to ask for it twice; it finally came when after the omelet plate had been taken away. And then it wasn't toast--just bread. Also had to ask for jam three times, and when the waiter finally brought a small plastic ramekin, it contained literally half a teaspoon of jam in it--made us laugh it was so ridiculous. I think it was the first time a waiter had ever served a sarcastic condiment, lol. There was also an awkward exchange in the middle of the room between our waiter and another. Our waiter seemed to be irritated with an older waiter and admonishing him about something, right in front of customers. It was awkward and I felt sorry for the older waiter. It just added to our already surprisingly negative experience with our waiter. Perhaps he was having a crummy day, but yikes. read more

Was randomly in the area so we let Yelp guide us. Arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday and it was already busy. That gave us confidence it must be good. Hostess was super helpful setting us up for a wait in the bar area. A table opened up from a no show so we were lucky and took the table. The hostess communicated with us to let us know another group had a reservation after us. In other words you can have the table but can't linger. I really was happy she told us so we would not feel rushed. Food was amazing. Appetizers of baked Brie tasted great but could use more Brie. Salmon dish yummy, a seafood stew was great. The saffron aioli was a bit wierd but otherwise yummy. My rice noodles with pork belly and kimchi was like a circus in your mouth. Waitress was as great and made sure I understood the flavor of kimchi . Dessert was solid. Cake was massive. Overall great find! read more

This looks to be the nicest place in town to eat so even if you don't love it it's definitely your best option. Did we love it? It was good, not great. We started with the cod fritters that were fine. My power salad was equally fine. My husband's pasta fusili was good but soupier than we expected. I can definitely appreciate the fresh ingredients. For me the star of the show was the pear martini. The space is kind of nice, lending to an agreeable ambiance. Our server and their co-workers were attentive . We went with a large group of people (8) and the waitress was super great! We had someone who was gluten free in the group, so she brought out the chef to talk to the friend to make sure everything was good to go. Their menu was pretty seasonal but we got the brussel sprouts and focaccia, which were btoh great. The pumpkin mole enchiladas were amazing (and the cheese inside was super flavorful). Potato latkes app is a stunning rethinking- these latkes are are more like crispy arancini balls, with horseradish and apple butter on the side. EVERY bar and bat mitzvah would be better with these. Papadum crusted salmon was a real winner. Complex flavors but well integrated and not overwhelming. Sarah was a great and helpful server. Cocktails and desserts look yummy- sorry to miss those. Wicked Eats! Chasing fall colors in the Berkshires and found this charming local favorite with fantastic food and superb service. Definitely one of the best experiences we have had. Truly genuine and courteous people serving amazing food with happy and attentive service. I had perfectly seasoned grilled pork chops with brazed sprouts so good I ordered them as an additional side. This is a great foodie place without the pretentiousness. Great description of daily specials and bar specials posted on the chalkboards around the bar. Nice selection of brews - but limited selection of wines. My salmon dinner special was cooked perfectly with several great sides - very tasty! Friendly bartenders - but was reminded by the bartender / restaurant policy or city policy? to pound-sand after 3 drinks. At first we were really turned off by the stressed out and abrupt hostess upon entering. Maybe she is related to someone there as I don't understand how the front of the house can be this way and keep working there. It's just not cool for business. How we have never happened upon this charming eatery before I do not know, but after an afternoon visit to the beautiful Bridge of Flowers we stopped by for a dinner that we will not soon forget! Located at the corner of Hope & Olive streets in downtown Greenfield, this little restaurant (with some outdoor seating) is a treasure worth discovering. Our server said the food was a general, eclectic fusion of tastes, but the American southern influence was well represented. We started with the corn fitters (the lime carrot slaw is reason enough to order this again!) and the fried chicken thighs. Entrees included the Ssamjang noodle bowl (like the Hallelujah Chorus for my taste buds) and the turkey Reuben sandwich (which was like a Reuben sandwich only better). The service was impeccable and the staff friendly - Cynthia was incredible and made the experience all the more memorable. I went for Sunday brunch ordered a burger (medium) with an egg and fries well done. Burger came out well done and the fries were soggy. On top of that I got tagged with a 2.5% kitchen fee. They labeled as optional. It didn't seem like I was given the option, and I am not going to argue over 1.20. I saw no signage about this fee. I have no trouble with an extra dollar it help the staff out, but I am left feeling indignant about the hidden fee. I am also wondering why the owners aren't paying their staff better. Hope & Olive is a nice joint serving up American fusion dishes. Their menu always has interesting items and I appreciate how inclusive it is to a variety of diets. I've been to this restaurant once before and was thoroughly impressed by the food. This time, I thought the food was good but perhaps lacking in some ways. The appetiser (corn and jalapeño fritters) was very tasty. It's not very spicy so don't worry. The fritters themselves felt a bit dense but with the salsa and pickled veg on the side, it helped make it a flavourful bite. For the main course, the green enchiladas were delicious. It was a unique filling and I liked the crunchiness of the zucchini. The rice provided a nice textural contrast as well as the avocado. The sauce was also a great addition to flavour. However, there was some sort of seed mixture on top which didn't have a nice mouthfeel. It reminded me of the inside of an eggplant that was over cooked (mushy). I can't say much for the scampi but it was apparently good. The porch swinger was good - maybe a bit heavy with the cucumber flavour. The chocolate mousse was the main letdown of dinner. Firstly, I made a mistake of ordering it and not asking for no whipped cream. The whipped cream is unsweetened so it's not too sweet and has a unique tangy-ness. However, the mousse itself was... not a mousse? It was more like a stretchy pudding. I was expecting a light, airy, chocolatey dish to end the meal but the texture was just too heavy. Perhaps it has something to do with it being GF but I think it should've been listed as a pudding and not a mousse. Overall, Hope & Olive is a nice establishment if you are wanting to try some creative and nice cooking. The service was also quite good. read more
