I finally found a place in Utah that makes Mexican food the way they do it in Cali!!!!!! I'm so happy I could cry. I ordered a bean, egg, and cheese breakfast burrito and asked to substitute French fries for potatoes, they said yes!!! BEST BURRITO EVER (in Utah)! I also got a quesadilla because on my cheat days when I eat dairy, I realllllllly eat dairy. This quesadilla was worth ever bite. I also got chips and salsa, HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Chips are thick, crunchy, and super fresh. The portion size of salsa they give you (pico de gallo) could feed an army (can I get a hallelujah for that?) This place is just meh... it's okay if you are not close to a betos or rancheritos.. also a really good place if you are hungover and need some greasy food. I ordered the steak fries with a steak quesadilla. The steak fries were decent but had legit no flavor to them.. the portion size was also pretty small compared to Beto's steak fries. The steak quesadilla was legit DRIPPING in grease and had no flavor as well. I also wasted about $30 on just those two items. So... would I recommend this place no... unless you absolutely have to then yes. But just stick with Beto's or Rancheritos. We have never been disappointed until tonight when we found multiple black, rotten potato pieces in our burritos and a weird, unexplainable hard piece in one of our tacos. Some of the best Carne Asada fries, I've had in my entire life. Steak is really juicy and tender but not dry. We got 2 orders for my family and instantly killed it. This was our first time, so we didn't get to try out any of the other items in the menu but definitely will in the future. My only knock from 1 star off is we tried going to the drive thru but no one was answering. It was clearly open but it might have been busy. We waited for a couple of minutes and than just parked out front and went inside and ordered. No big deal, bc we weren't in a rush but I can see that being a problem given the nature of the moment. read more

So I had to edit from 5 to 2 and remove half my original post. This place is delicious but gets a -3 stars for consistency and getting food correct. If I had a dollar for every time my burrito is completely ripped open when I got home and opened it, meat in a meatless meal/burrito for a vegetarian, or a 5 dollar burrito that's randomly half the size of the previous time and probably smaller than my 1 year olds fore arm. I could buy this place. But this food does taste good, odds are they don't care to give you the portion you pay for or you might be eating something you didn't order and have told multiple times that it's for a vegetarian and you keep finding bits of bacon and steak in it. The first time I ate at Gual Berto's was the week it opened - I have been a fan ever since. As a Draper native I saw many places come and go in their location and for selfish reasons (I love the food) was determined to not let this place get away. I decided to hire myself as the Chief Marketing Officer. This being the mid 2000's I petitioned the restaurant reviewer at the DesNews to write a review - and it worked, and she liked it! You can see the DesNews review hanging on the wall to the right of the menu. I took everyone I knew to the place and then wrote a glowing review in the high school newspaper to turn my peers onto the place. (No one loves 24hr mexican like high school/college kids) I don't know if I helped, but I know Gual's is still open and has done well enough to open a second location in Riverton. Food: Everything is cooked to order and is very flavorful. The breakfast burritos are delicious- packed with potatoes, cheese, eggs, and meat. The rolled tacos are a favorite. Imagine a fresh made taquito piled high with shredded lettuce, cheese, and Gual's fresh guacamole. Their guac is so good you could probably talk me into eating my shoe if it was covered in the stuff. Their beef tacos are quickly fried to produce a real hard-shell taco and are incredibly tasty. Service: Not over the top special, but I've never had an issue. They get the job done and get you your meal quickly. Feel: The place doesn't scream authentic, but for me that is part of the appeal. When they moved in they liked the mural of old school Draper on the wall that the previous businesses had painted so they just taped a piece of butcher paper over the old businesses name. Cracks me up every time I see it. I'm happy Gual's has stuck around. Each time I pass by and see the parking lot full of cars or walk in and am met with a line, I remember the early days when I would walk in, eat, and leave having never seen another patron. WARNING: CHECK PRICES AND AMOUNTS CHARGED WHEN GOING IN THE DRIVE-THRU!!! This is hard because I like this place. Food is pretty good most of the time. Staff is kind and responsive with the exception of one or two employees. Unfortunately, there is a new employee working the drive-thru and is overcharging... me at the very least. The last two times in the drive-thru I have been overcharged $3 or more. This last time nearly $4! This by the same person. On every other occasion except the previous I have not been overcharged. This time I went directly inside and asked for a manager. It seems like the manager is never there. Makes me wonder if there actually is one, because I have asked on two other occasions and the manager is never there. Same this time. Not there. I explained the situation and and they disputed. It was clear that I was overcharged and the guy who charged me proceeded to give me the wrong amount of change. Less than half of what I was owed. He said I should "check with the bank". I have never been charged a wrong amount anywhere else since owning my credit card. I know that people make mistakes, but this is no mistake! Two times in a row with the same person is no coincidence. If he doesn't get caught soon, he will eventually. It is sad that people feel the need to steal from loyal customers who enjoy and respect their establishment. I will not go back to this place again. read more

The Salt Lake valley is a Mecca for drive thru Mexican restaurants. No matter your location you are never far from a Rancheritos, Hectors, Betos. (the list goes on) So is Gual Bertos really any different from these other places? Not particularly. It's just as greasy, fattening and addicting. And it has a similar taste to all the others. But that does not deter me from coming here. If anything, it has that familiar taste that I love about all these places. A bit dirty, but stupidly satisfying. The burritos are huge, take home and save for later status. Really can never go wrong with chili verde, carne. Tostadas and beef tacos seem to be my go-to, regardless. Do yourself a favor and get some rice and beans too. They make the meal. Best of all, it's reasonably priced and usually very quick. read more

We live pretty far away but come here just for the amazing food. They have a drive thru and it is quick and attentive. My family and I have had no problems here and will be coming back soon. For a family of four like mine we find ordering the Carne Asada Fries as a necessity and a 12 rolled tacos with guacamole and sour cream a must have. Nasty. I got a breakfast burrito and the eggs were so watery and so scrambled they were just soggy little crumbles. The potatoes were also wet- boiled not fried or at all crisp and I swear they tasted a little bit like the cookware they were cooked in. I have lived in SLC for a little over a year now. I am from Yuma, AZ which is on the border of Cali and Mexico. So I was pretty spoiled when it came to Mexican food. There are so many places all over that are a similar kind of mexican food here. It's kind of a fast Mexican food. Beto's, Berto's, Floriberto's, etc. None of these places are even half as good as the places back home. I have searched high and low for something even close to the food I grew up with. I finally found it! My first bite of Gaul Berto's shredded chicken burrito sent me back home. This place is so high above all the other "berto" type places. I want to eat there every day!! read more
