Very disappointed. I was super excited to try it because I heard great things. The restaurant was cute. I originally ordered chicken, broccoli and cilantro dish. The flavors were good but I could the chicken was fried in old grease. I notified the woman at the front, she stated the grease was changed this morning even thought the chicken reeked of an old grease smell. She offered to made a different dish that was not fried and suggested the Kung Pao Chicken. I agreed. When the food arrived. Once again the flavors were good but I could taste old grease in the sauce. The old grease wasn't as strong as the first dish but present enough to taste. The woman at front, with whom I spoke to earlier, clearly began avoiding us and never checked on us after. I husband had to work overtime just to get Togo boxes and a bag for his food. I do not recommend this place. I really wanted to like this place but I refuse to eat somewhere that doesn't care about the quality of their food ingredients. So small shop, but not too small.. it holds probably less than 15 tables. I came in the door and was greeted in a cheerful fashion (as she came from lit the back). I appreciated that. They still wear masks. So if you're worried or concerned about any type of germs flying around, they keep that in consideration. And you can actually see the people in the back who are cooking wearing masks as well. Really clean place, very clean and modern. It's not super big but for what it is, it is very well kept. They have a very Nice ambience, music in the background and all. So you won't just be sitting in silence, you'll always have something there to listen to. It's not a whole lot but it's a very nice touch to me. Spicy shrimp - Not a shrimp or good and it came in a heaping pile. It had shrimp and peppers and onions in it and it had a lot of kicking flavor to it. It was spicy so it should have lol. They were fried really well, they didn't really come with any sausage or anything like that but I felt like it could have had a sauce to help it along, but it was good on his own. Personally I would have got a little bit of a sweet sauce or something along those lines to help balance out the heat in it, but either way, it will still good. General tso - Now the chicken was good it was cooked very well. The sauce was flavorful and had a little bit of a kick to it, which is what you wanted. I thought that it was a very nice size portion, and I would consider ordering it again! Spicy fries - I thought that the spicy fries were good. They came out hot and fresh and they actually had a bunch of chopped peppers in them. And they were also seasoned with pepper flakes as well so you really got some cake to them. They had a lot of greenery on them, which was really weird, it was more cilantro than I would have thought would have been needed, because at the end of the dish you had a pile of greenery after the fries were done. But either way, that did not impact the food. They came with ketchup. Now if they had a spicy ketchup there that would have been fire! But I guess there was enough heat in the dish as is lol! They were good and they were shareable. Does not come with rice - One thing that I'm not really a fan of is the fact that nothing actually comes with rice. You have to order rice on the side, and usually if you go to other spots like this they'll have rice with it as part of the dish or part of the meal. It's like $2, and it's not the end of the world, but other places have a combo kind of situation to where you would have a protein and rice and egg roll and it'll be all lump together. But, if that's the way they do things, at least I know that. Egg roll - I thought we're pretty good. I have ordered dumplings from Gu's via delivery, but took advantage of Chamblee Restaurant Week to dine in. Gu's Kitchen is close to the intersection of Buford Highway and Chamblee-Tucker Road and is MARTA-accessible via the 39, 126, and 133 buses. Gu's Kitchen is intimate, bright, and airy, with classical music playing in the background. I also appreciated learning about Szechuan and its cuisine from the menu and the table numbers. We were greeted and seated immediately. Food and beverages came out very quickly, especially considering it was during Chamblee Restaurant Week and there was a steady stream of to go orders. We were well taken care of at Gu's Kitchen, as the staff was friendly and attentive. We ordered the Handmade Sweet and Spicy Thick Noodles, Zhong-Style Pork Dumplings, Stir-fried String Beans, and Spring Rolls. I love, love, love Gu's sweet and spicy Zhong sauce. The noodles had a new chew to them. The noodles are more spicy than sweet, but very delicious. Gu's dumplings are one of my cravings, and I have eaten them several times. The dumplings weren't as tasty as I have had them; I could have used a little more flavor inside the dumpling. But they were still good. The string beans were delicious. The minced garlic and pickled Chinese cabbage really added complexity, and the string beans had the right amount of crisp. The spring rolls were also tasty. My husband is a spring roll connoisseur, and he remarked that he didn't need the dipping sauce to enjoy the rolls. It is great to have so many tasty vegetarian options! Like it's good, but there are other places doing green beans and spicy chicken that taste equally as good, same portions-for less and are still thriving. Little light on filling, sauce is a little sweeter than I prefer, but tasty, and I did like them. Also, they're dumplings...I mean come on; even mediocre ones are good in my book. The rice was well prepared if a little on the dry side. It stuck together nicely and held up well enough to eat with chopsticks-that I had to ask for. I've always loved Gu's dumplings from the Krog Street location. I finally made it to the Buford Hwy location and it delivered. It's a nice, airy space with a few tables, though not a super big restaurant. It looks like they had a lot of take out orders since we were greeted with a table full of boxed food in plastic bags. There were only two other parties there so we were told to sit anywhere. We were handed menus to bring to our table. Once we sat, the server brought us water and gave us a few minutes to look at the menu. She came back 10 mins after and gave her our order. The menu here looks pretty similar to the Krog Street location (though I haven't been there in awhile so I'm not sure if it's changed). There were two of us so we shared egg drop soup, full portion of chicken dumplings with extra dumpling sauce ($2 extra) and stir fried string beans. It didn't take more than 5 minutes when our soup arrived. It's in a bigger cup so was shareable for two- wish this was served with wonton strips on the side. Next came the green beans which were fried to perfection - it was super tender and was flavorful. Our dumplings came and this is where I was the most disappointed with. The dumpling wrapper was nice and thick but the chicken filling was just straight up ground chicken and seasoning. I didn't see any diced veggies or anything. I also found it super dry, so I asked for the extra dumpling sauce. Customer service here is great though. They refilled our water everytime the server walked by. Bathrooms are clean as well. Do I think there are better, cheaper dumpling eats on Buford Highway? Absolutely. I have all the hot sauces from the YouTube "Hot ones" purchased during the pandemic, I make my own hot sauce, I love Jacobsons ghost chili pepper salt and their habanero salt, I know my way around hot spicy HEAT Having said that Everything was as fresh as it could be, possibly made today, it was tasty SERIOUSLY tasty. I ordered through UberEats for delivery. Me and my fiancé were craving some Szechuan dumplings and came upon this place. I'm not a huge spicy food lover, but this seemed like a good option for those spicy food lovers who have a love-hate relationship with using the toilet; IYKYK. We ordered the handmade sweet and spicy thick noodles, the spicy popcorn chicken, the spicy dried beef noodles (not pictured), and the pork dumplings. The main thing we wanted were the pork dumplings. One order had 12(?) dumplings covered in a sauce. The fillings inside the dumplings were in my opinion, not enough to fill you up. It was such a small portion of meat that I felt like I got ripped off. Possibly the smallest portion that felt like a teaspoon of filling in a big dumpling wrapper. The spicy popcorn chicken was over cooked to the point where it was too hard to chew on. Very dry pieces of chicken. I would not recommend if you're comparing it to Quicklys popcorn chicken. The handmade spicy and sweet thick noodles were okay, nothing too amazing. The sauce itself was as it is called: sweet and spicy. I think this was the best dish out of all the items we ordered. How have I been to Gu's Kitchen so often but never sat down to write a review??? Actually this is the second Gu's I visited, the first being with a friend at the Krog street location when they first opened. I was not a fan of that location, but this one, is infinitely better. I'll focus on the order I took away today: Spicy crispy beef: $20.90 Dan Dan noodles: $15.40 Spring rolls: $4.40 I really love the spicy crispy beef, which is usually fried crispy, as the name suggests, and has dried red chili peppers, cilantro and garlic slices all throughout. You can punch the spice level up if needed, or you can choose no spice at all. Decent sized portions, although it's a little pricey for what you get. Dan Dan noodles are pretty good! These come topped with ground beef and green onion. The spice level here can also be modified if necessary. Call me crazy but I often steal some of the garlic, cilantro and peppers from the spicy crispy beef and combine it with some of my noodles. That makes the Dan Dan noodles really stand out to me. Honorable mention, because I didn't buy it today, but I do really like their porkbelly fried rice, if you're looking for an alternative to noodles, it's a winner! The spring rolls regrettably are nothing special, and you're better off getting the dumplings. Located off of Buford Hwy, in the Orient center (next to Pho bac for reference), parking is pretty easy, and there's a number of exits in and out. I've been to Gu's Kitchen for years and it'll likely remain a staple in my go to places to eat. Come here first before going to any of the other Gu's locations. read more

As a regular customer of Gu's(I even purchased a tshirt), this is tough to write because before November 2021 I would've given 5 stars! Typically I order some combination of three dishes: zhong-style pork dumplings, chengdu cold noodles, and the homemade sweet and spicy thick noodles. Today, 1/11/23, I ordered the thick noodles and a half order of dumplings; the dumplings were perfect and what I know and love Gu's to be. However, I write because the $15-16.50 (depends on in-store vs delivery app) for the homemade sweet and spicy thick noodles had ZERO sauce. As I stated, as a regular, these used to be so saucy. I thought my previous order (via delivery) was a one-off because the chengdu cold noodles had NO SAUCE, and it was so odd I considered driving it back to say something but instead gave them the benefit of the doubt that this was a one-off where maybe someone forgot the sauce. So this time, I order takeout over the phone and pick it up in-store. When I get home and open the thick noodles container there was disappointingly NO SAUCE. Thus, I called and said I need to complain because I've been a customer for years, and this is concerning quality. Considering the $16 noodles have no sauce, no nothing, I'd say they aren't worth the price anymore. For example, you can easily get a $16 pad Thai with chicken somewhere else and it will be way more satisfying than these bare noodles. I love their chewiness but not enough to eat them sauceless. Please see the photos because you can see the clear differences in quality. This time the dumplings we perfect so half my order way good enough to eat, but it is still heartbreaking that the noodles were bland. Anyway, when I spoke with them on the phone, I was told this is how they are and that the noodles soak up the sauce, to which I replied "noo, I've been a customer for years and I've had orders were the noodles soak up the sauce and there is still plenty of sauce." I'm not sure if the krog street location has also changed how the noodles are served. I hope this isn't forever and I'll update my review later. The dumplings were still amazing so 3/5 stars for now. Used to be Gu's Bistro when I discovered this place on Christmas Eve with my Jewish friend who was visiting his family in Atlanta from MIT in Boston over the holidays. They used to have this lotus root stir fry on the menu that I loved. The Chinese food here is not the ubiquitous Cantonese cuisine that's what most restaurants in the United States sell. It's Schezwan or Sichuan cuisine, which is far spicier. They put red peppercorns in their sauce. I got the vegetarians noodle and tofu hotpot with the sauce on the side. read more

Ordered takeout and got the Handmade Sweet and Spicy Thick Noodles, Chengdu Cold Noodles, Chongqing Spicy Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Spicy Dried Eggplant. The noodles were super delicious. Both of them fairly spicy but super flavorful. As a Sichuanese person, I will say the Chengdu Cold Noodles were fairly authentic in flavor. Be sure to stir the noodles as the sauce collects at the bottom - and the sauce is the best part! The Chongqing Spicy Chicken was definitely spicy and also pretty authentic to the Chongqing flavor. The Kung Pao Chicken was okay - the chicken was a little dry and cubed as they should be - also not really spicy. Would definitely recommend the Chongqing over the Kung Pao. *Takeout Review* Wanting to Asian food for a Friday night, we decided to check new places out instead of roaming to our normal spots. Gu's Kitchen popped up and I went through and looked at their menu and some of the dishes caught my eye. One thing that did catch my eye was their Tea Smoked Duck and that was exactly what we ordered, along with a few other items. I ordered the dan dan noodles, their sweet and spicy thick noodles, their chicken po'boy, and spicy crispy fish. Yeah, I went a little overboard, but I think I got ones that popped out on the menu for me. I ordered right through Yelp and scheduled a pick up time at 5:30. I got the restaurant, right at 5:30 and it was ready for me to pick up. Picked up my order and left, it was as easy as that. It was neat that they zip tied the bag so it discouraged delivery drivers not to eat the contents. When I got home, the po'boy was steaming in the bag for a bit, so it got a little soggy. I popped it into the air fryer and got it a little bit toasty again. However, the first bite I took it turned out it wasn't chicken. It was tofu. I paid an extra dollar for tofu. It wasn't bad by all purposes (as far as taste), but I was interested in the fried chicken. Knowing that I wasn't going to drive 15 minutes to get the right order, I just ate it and going to keep in mind that if I were to eat at the restaurant this issue wouldn't be an issue. Onto the Tea smoked duck, during the ride back my car just filled up with the smell of the tea, which was pretty awesome. The duck came with a sauce to go with the duck and the tea flavor is definitely there. But, the duck itself was on the salty side which the sauce helped with. The fish was great. It was crispy, and had some seasonings. There was a good amount of batter, but it wasn't unwelcomed. I liked it, I definitely think that if you do order this as take out to put this in the air fryer or a mini oven if you have one to reheat because it can definitely get soggy in a bag. The two noodle dishes were great. Both noodles I picked were "less spicy" as I know my fear of extremely spicy foods and I didn't want to have uh, let's just say bad aftermaths. Sweet and spicy thick noodles were pretty good, you can taste the sweetness and then there was a little spiciness but it wasn't something that couldn't be handled. The dan dan noodles were great too, I did mix it up a little bit before start eating, the only thing that I'm iffy about is that there wasn't enough meat, but I mean that's just me. This place used to be one of my fave place. The quality of this place seems to have gone downhill a lot over the past 2 years. We tend to order take out from Gu's via Uber Eats. We always pay extra $1.1 each dish for all our orders to make sure it's extra spicy. Lately though, the food always comes with barely any sauce. I am not even sure why we paid the extra $1.1 for each dish when it doesn't even translate to the food. We sent a feedback to Gu's via social media more than once and they always come back saying sorry and will provide the feedback. Last Saturday we ordered 1 full size pork dumplings, 2 dried beef noodles.. all with extra spicy and hence additional $3.3. When the food got delivered, the dumplings were bone dry and barely any sauce. The noodles were dry too and all the dishes are not even spicy. I get that there's inflation, everything is expensive. But as a business, if you decide to charge extra to the customers.. you can't just provide dry dumpling and noodles to us. Again, we sent this to Gu's directly via social media but I feel like they come back with standard response and nothing changed.. it actually got worse after our feedback. Such a disappointing meal and experience. Not sure if I ever want to order from this place ever again. I forgot to take a picture of our noodles because we were so surprised when we saw the dumpling so dry with barely any sauce. This is for an uber eats order, although I've dined in here before the pandemic and have picked up food to go. I was craving Chinese food so went with a place that is pretty consistent. I really love their prawn special dishes but didn't see any on the uber menu, so I went with my second favorite, dried eggplant. In addition, I ordered half an order of veggie dumplings, and Singapore noodles with shrimp. Each dish was flavorful, and portions were large, I had enough for two more meals. The Singapore noodles contained small shrimp and not very many which was disappointing, this is my second time ordering this dish and I probably wont order it again , I'm just not a fan of the eggs with the noodles. I ordered the eggplant and noodles spicier, and it probably wasn't' the best decision, my mouth was on fire, but I finished it. Usually, places make their meals American spicy which is never enough for me, but I know that is not the case with Gu's.   Overall, I was satisfied with my meal and will continue to support Gus Kitchen. Only thing is I wish they would do a better job packing their meals, there is no ventilation so the containers they use get soggy and add moisture to the food. read more

Take Out Tuesday was amazing for me! I ordered the tastiest chicken dumplings, spicy chicken noodles and spicy popcorn chicken. I definitely recommend getting the chicken dumplings. They're $6 for 6 dumplings and comes drenched in a spicy sweet sauce. I still can't get over the noodles, it had a delicious lemon and garlic flavor to it. You can order it via UberEats or even pick it up from the restaurant. They follow all the isolation protocols, one of the staff even wiped the door handles, payment areas twice in front of me. Come for the dumplings, stay for the noodles. I've yet to have bad dumplings and these certainly don't disappoint. I was most surprised by the handmade sweet and spicy thick noodles. These noodles were doughy: a notch below Olive Garden breadsticks in their golden age. Incredible texture and taste to these noodles. The General Tso chicken was okay--I'll try Kung Pao next time. My favorite Gu's Kitchen location out of the 3 that is in Atlanta. After restructuring itself as more of a fast serve Chinese food restaurant, it opened its first location in Ponce. Ponce has limited menu options, mainly dumplings and noodles. After couple of years, it reopened in Buford Hwy and recently opened its third location in the burbs in Alpharetta. I wasn't that impressed with Ponce location. Alpharetta location is very Americanized and can compare to a fancy Chinese food court food. However, this location is gem. Gu's is located in the same plaza as Pho Bac. Once you enter, you order your food and sit down. Not sure if this is the norm, but when we went at night, they reserve your seating when you order. Interior is on a modern side with its playful shape plates and marble tables. Based on some of the reviews, we ordered the hand pulled sweet and spicy noodles, spicy beef noodles, dried eggplant dish, and the pork dumplings. Huge fan of noodles and anything starchy, this place was on point. Noodles and dumplings were fresh and had a chewy texture. Dried eggplant dish was perfectly seasoned. While I loved the sweet and spicy noodles for the texture, I actually preferred the spiciness and flavor of the beef noodles. So if you're up for more of a spicy dish, would recommend this. read more

My first time trying this location! I initially stumbled on this place during my time at Krog St Market. The dumpling are my absolute favorite of all time!!! You can never go wrong- I order chicken because I don't eat pork and honestly in my experience chicken dumplings are so hard to come by! Next time I would order more of a variety of food because at the end of this meal in particular I felt that the taste of the dishes started to blend together. I plan to order the string beans next time for sure, they looked great ! R treated me tonight at Gu's Kitchen. I'm not a picky eater, so, when he asked what I wanted to order, I told him to order whatever he wanted for the both of us to share. This was our first time here. We've eaten at Gu's Dumplings at Kroger Street Market previously, so I was expecting a nice experience. Parking was easy, since there's a large lot with free parking. We walked into the restaurant which is in a strip mall with lots of Asian businesses. The hostess at the register at the front greeted us warmly, and handed us menus and then focused our attention on the "specials" menu handwritten on a board at the front counter. The regular menu has icons on it which indicates vegetarian items, how hot (as in spicy) an item is, and other icons that can help you determine what to order. R ordered the Szechuan Spicy Fried Rice from the regular menu and the Mongolian Beef from the special menu. After R paid, the hostess motioned to a table for us to sit at, and told us that the food would be served to us. The table had already been set while we were ordering, with small plates, glasses of water and gold colored forks and matching chopsticks wrapped in cloth napkins now waiting for us. The dining area looks very clean, new and casual, with enough room for people to navigate around all the tables.' After about 10 minutes, the fried rice was served to us, and it looked delicious. According to the menu, this fried rice normally has a four chili pepper spiciness rating, but R has asked for only a two chili pepper spiciness for us. Two chili peppers was spicy enough for us. I actually was disappointed with the flavors of the fried rice because it was just ... slightly spicy with really no other flavors. The small cuts of chicken were very dry. Within 5 minutes, the Mongolian beef was served. This dish also looked delicious! The flavors were good, and the beef was tender. The server and the hostess came around a few times to check on us and asked if we needed anything, and they were friendly in a reserved way. To me, the entire dining experience seemed average. This place was soooooo good. It will definitely become one of my new favorites. I ordered their food through Uber eats. The pork dumplings were incredible and probably my favorite item we got. The pork tasted super fresh and the sauce was perfection. The sweet and spicy noddles were also REALLY GOOD. These noodles are definitely hand pulled and as fresh as you can get. The Mongolian beef was made with really high quality beef. Comes with a lot of onions mixed in, but you have to make sure to order a side of rice if you want rice with the beef. I prefer going to Gus Kitchen over any other location in Atlanta. Their food is too excellent to only be enjoyed at a food court. This location is small but the food is delicious and hot. You order when you first walk in and they give you a number for your table so they can bring you your food. My go to order is usually the chicken dumplings with the thick noodles. This time I also got Dan Dan noodles. They are a smaller noodle and they have a little bite to it. They make an amazingly flavored crab rangoon which is worth every extra cent. Hmmmmmm.....i used to like Gu's dumplings...or at least I thought I did. I was tricked into this place -I suggested we go someplace else and I am sad about caving in and coming here. The person who wanted to go here walked in and immediately announced...."it stinks in here." We should have left then as she repeated it several times. Lol! (I was starving and it didn't stink to me so I plowed on). Someone near us had a big portion of what looked to be curry noodles so I thought we should go with that. She wanted eggplant with basil which I typically love and of course the famous dumplings which come in 2 sizes. At Gu's you order at the counter and then they bring to food to you. Since I ordered the food.... I ended up paying. Fine. 62.00?! Later I was irritated but as I said I was starving and figured we would have leftovers. A tasty albeit expensive lunch -I am ok with that. What I am not ok with is totally mediocre food. And it was that. The noodles were the best but still Bland as hell. The eggplant was greasy and had large pieces of garlic and basil but almost no flavor. The dumplings were nothing special and the sauce which I remembered as being spicy and delish was bland also. If I had made this mess at home I would have said to myself... good try Chrissy but next time just save yourself the time and effort and buy the food from a real restaurant. Beware of this restaurant which had been good several years ago. When calling to place an order, I was told by recorded message to place my order myself on their website which I did. This restaurant specializes in Szechuan cuisine which is spicy yet anything you wanted spicy required an additional charge. I have never heard of a restaurant charging extra to make their food spicy and also not taking an order by phone. Once the online website order was finished ..they asked for my credit info,andfor just a second..maybe 2 second flashed the total with a 6 dollar tip!...I could not get the website to show this again. I thought I would have them take the tip off when I arrived since no humans were involved in assisting me with the order and I was also picking it up, paying extra for making it spicy as it's supposed to be with SZECHUAN . I resented the restaurant deciding what their tip should be and not me. When I arrived,the bag was on a table and already rung up so I let it go. When home I noticed the receipt was in Chinese so had no idea what had been rung. The following week I placed another phone order and was charge a large tip considering I had no human interaction. I realized that this restaurant works with DoorDash and it appeared that even though I was ordering from their website, it was actually going through DoorDash. I had been signed up to DoorDash and my Credit card information taken from my phone. If I had a delivery to my home,I would not have minded this tip but I was driving to the restaurant. Their food is pretty good but all the unprofessional behavior would cause me to encourage you to stay away. There are so many excellent Asian restaurants on Buford Hwy, who give you great food and service for a better price, there is no need to go here and get less human contact than a Wendy's or Mac Donald's and be charged over a six dollar tip, have your credit information in someone's hands. read more
