The Gryphon holds a special place in my heart. While attending BMC down the road, my friends and I would stop here after catching a movie next door, and grab coffee to keep us warm until the R5 arrived to take us back to Bryn Mawr. Every now and then we'd sit in and listen to a kid on his guitar, perhaps giggling about his absurd lyrics or transfixed by the music. At the time, I took the Gryphon for granted, but I've never found a place quite like it. A perfectly smooth soy latte that's not a bit sweet, in an atmosphere that's feels cozy and far away from Wayne, PA. This is a great place to unwind, meet with friends, get some work done, or grab a coffee to go. I always stop in when I'm home. read more

Gryphon Cafe is love. Love, love, love the decor! The interior screams out cozy and antique. Gryphon Cafe has that sort of look, where you feel like you've been here before so many times, but you clearly know you haven't. You just feel so familiar with the place, like you've seen this place in a movie or on a postcard. On top of that, they serve great drinks. I've tried their smoothie, which wasn't really impressive, but their tea and coffee are different stories. I've tried many of their tea selections and nothing disappointed me yet. This is one of the few places in the world where no matter how busy I am, I have no choice but to stop in for a latte if I'm nearby. Always busy, the Gryphon caters to your caffeine addiction in a manner really unparalleled in other coffee houses. The soy milk latte, with a thick rich head of foam with a heart (or leaf, shamrock, etc.) artfully inscribed is superb...full bodied and smooth without the bitter aftertaste. Take advantage of the cocoa and cinnamon; i'm not sure where they get these, but they are excellent. I've taken to uncrewing the top and dumping extra cocoa in, as I can never seem to get enough out of the shaker top. Can't someone make the holes a bit bigger? The Gryphon also offers lunch items and pastries, but I've never had them. The look of utter bliss on the patrons enjoying their latte and sandwich suggests that they are in their happy place. For any Manhattanites out there reading this, Gryphon Cafe is what West Village's Grounded would be if it were located in suburban Philadelphia--only better! The staff is super-friendly, I've never had any problems landing a table, there's free wifi, and the prices are totally reasonable (then again, relative to Manhattan, anything is affordable). There's even live music in the evenings (I can't remember which days of the week). The edibles and imbibables are amazing--there's a wide selection of coffee-based drinks (I'm partial to the caramel vanilla latte--I think it's called Nick's), loose leaf teas, and lemonades, plus soups, sandwiches, and baked goods (try the chocolate croissant!). Tip: If downstairs is completely full, find the doorway in the left front corner of the storefront and grab a seat upstairs in the quiet meeting room there. It's a great place to study as well, particularly if you can't tolerate the Main Line Mommies and their iPhone-toting toddlers. read more

The two occupants welcomed me but I was very uncomfortable. Fortunately, a patron at a different table left. I quickly occupied the table. Aside: I understand the present economic challenges. I understand the advantages of using a public facility to minimize costs and maximizing resources. The primary goal is providing a pleasant eating experience with an optional cyber experience befitting a traditional respite. Unabated business activities compromise those, like me, who wish only to find an unoccupied table to enjoy a meal. I'm sure management is cognizant of this practice and must display sensitivity. It's clear however, management has no intention of disrupting status quo. read more

Located next door or actually in the adjoining space to a yoga studio, this place is disorganized, not very easy for first-timers, and not at all business oriented, and perhaps that is part of its charm, I don't know. It has soooo much potential however, given its huge parking lot and proximity to everything, it is only about 100 yards of Lancaster Ave. There is no menu chalkboard or advertising whatsoever. The baked goods are not even displayed where you can see them unless you lean over the glass separating you from the counter. I am not even sure how you would order any of them at all since they don't even have labels. No prices anywhere, unless you specifically ask for a menu, and the menu isn't complete. I ordered a coffee, it had decent flavor but not special. I also ordered a cup of mulligatawny soup in a cup. Well.... it came in a bowl with slices of baguette, a great bargain given its size and heartiness. It was the thickest mulligatawny I have ever had and flavorful. Lots of lentils, light curry, quite filling. I asked the counter guy what's in it, he didn't know and asked another guy sitting down at a table, "where do we get the mulligatawny" the other guy said he thought it was from blah blah blah. Ah, so you guys don't even make it yourself. But they are all about fresh, organic, healthy stuff here, blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong, everyone seemed genuine, how can you go wrong getting food next door to a yoga studio, right? But this place is just all over the map and doesn't seem to have any identity. The patrons, most of them, looked like they came out of a yoga class, workout clothes, and all were having great chat with each other. I love what the Gryphon used to be and the friends I once had there, years have gone by and my era has passed. The Gryphon is especially successful at nurturing a place where people can meet, I've met a handful of good friends there. As for the coffee, try to get it when it is fresh, it's absolutely delicious when it has just been brewed. If it has been hanging around then opt for something else (sometimes it has been hanging out.) Ask beforehand what has been most recently brewed, the baristas are very nice and are always happy to tell you what's going on behind the counter. As for the art, I have never seen a good show/collection there but there are indeed talented artists who visit the cafe frequently. The best art isn't on the walls, it's in the sketchbooks of the people sitting in the cafe. They are usually happy to show you too, it's a great way to make friends. read more

I've been in quite a few times and the coffee/espresso drinks are second to none in Wayne. However the average ranking is because of the service. Maybe its the times we live in, but when you have to wait close to 10 minutes to give an order and pay for it, and then another 5-10 minutes for it to arrive .. its just to much. The confusing part is I don't know what the hold up is since the times I've been in there are 5+ people working. Gryphon is located a block from the train station in Wayne. It's a great cafe with lots of charm. The staff were very friendly despite the busy morning they were having. The avocado on toast was served on freshly baked bread and quick tasty. It's a great place to visit or work. Make sure you stop in if you're in the area. read more

Kill me!!! Desperately ran in here for a quick cup on the way to class. The first thing that was said to me was that they were closing early and that they "maybe could make something for me quick." I opted for an iced tea, which tastes fermented. You know like sun tea after it's bacteria has been festering inside the luke warm container eating themselves all day? Yeah, that. Then another kid told me to use a different door when I was leaving because he had already locked the front. Fabulous. I wanted to love this place, the only independent cafe I have found in Wayne, but I've had two bad experiences. What's good: prompt, friendly service, nice, funky atmosphere, air conditioning downstairs perfect on a hot morning. Black delicious (to me) coffee had that slightly burnt taste that is growing popular. The selection of bottled and house-made cold drinks is big for a small cafe, and they clearly have a dedicated following of eco-friendly customers stopping in with reusable mugs. Now the downside: On two visits a week apart, the dishwasher was broken so I couldn't use a house mug. I left my reusable one at home both days, and was forced to use a paper cup, which I avoid. My first visit, I ordered a multi-grain bagel with veggie cream cheese. "No veggie cream cheese today," so I had plain. The already tough bagel was seriously over-toasted, rendering it inedible. They kindly gave me a card for a free drink when I pointed it out. On my second visit, I again had to use a paper cup and ordered a sesame bagel with plain cream cheese. This time I got an everything bagel, which included anise seeds I don't care for. I didn't say anything. I hope the Gryphon can get the dishwasher fixed and work on bagel identification and toasting skills. I'll give them one more try. read more

Gryphon is one the best suburban coffee shops in Philadelphia. The baristas are skilled, and the beans are high quality. The food items are limited but generally high quality. The seating is limited and expect to wait at least 5 minutes for your expresso drink, which is normal for most good coffee shops. If you're looking for quick coffee, there are plenty of other options nearby. Some of the negative reviews of this place on Yelp are pretty hilarious. Asking to move for open mic night? Sharing a big table? Waiting a few minutes for a coffee? Seriously, people need to set expectations accordingly. Its a small coffee shop. read more

I was here for the first time last week. I'm going to keep this short. It's good. It has a feel of one of my favorite coffee spots in San Francisco. Lots of light wood and just a home feeling about it. The folks that work there are really friendly (probably friendlier than the customers.) I walked in recovering from a sore throat and decided to order tea. They have a great selection of teas. My father loved tea. I spent 8 years abroad and traveling and have tried some great teas too. The Gryphon doesn't disappoint because you have a range of herb, white, green, and black teas. I chose the orange chamomile, and it was excellent. Plus, they have wifi and plenty of plugs. I hope I have a chance to spend more time there before I move on to NYC. Check it out if you're ever in the area. read more

Friendly staff + Gryphon uses only freshly roasted beans, which they roast in house- in the hands of their barista's and using a La Marzocco Strada (espresso machine) you get espresso based drinks that taste great and are a work of art. The Gryphon is one of my favorite coffee shops in the area. Friendly baristas, good coffee, and a great vibe. Local art on the walls, live music sometimes (I've never been there for any live performances), relaxing coffee shop music playing otherwise, with upstairs & downstairs seating. It's everything that a coffee shop should be. This sounds kinda ridiculous, but I really do appreciate the baristas ALWAYS taking the time to clean a mug for our coffee. There's just something about drinking it out of a mug versus a paper cup. We typically like to grab a cup of coffee every Sunday, and it's usually mildly disappointing when it comes in a paper cup. I really really missed this cozy, eclectic cafe. It's the prime place for studying or just catching up with friends on a weekend (or before a mixer/dance, if you're in HS...ahh, those good ole days). I say this because I always see a variety of people scattered at the tables whenever I'm in, ranging from collegiates hunched over their laptops and textbooks to older suburban yuppies chatting over their cappuccinos. Staff here are pleasant and welcoming. The coffeehouse has a lot to offer -- a huge, tasty range of coffee and pastries, light lunch fare made in-house until mid-afternoon, local music playing in the evenings. The walls are always rotating with local artistry of all medias. Which is why the place is packed all morning with displaced workers. Finding a table can be tough but many are willing to share if you ask. More seating upstairs along with bathrooms. This coffee shop is spectacular. One of the best stops on the main line. Coffee is well priced. In all my visits I've been consistently impressed with how well trained each Batista is at creating quality beverages.they roast their own beans which brews excellent cups of coffee. I highly recommend the sumatra. The shop is small, but with as much seating as can be fit into the space. When there's not a seat, you're annoyed by this. When you're in a seat, you're so happy that it's not bigger than it is. There's no a/c, which you would think keeps crowds away in July and August. However this is not the case and a testament to how good the coffee is here. This shop is also highly invested in the neighborhood. Each monday night highlights local musicians. The walls are frequently rotated with local art for sale. They've even partnered with a local brewery to create a coffee brew. All in all, I've never been to a coffee shop I have more thoroughly enjoyed. The coffee is spectacular. The space is quaint, the employees are knowledgeable and very nice. Do yourself a favor and stop here if you're in the philadelphia area. read more

I like Gryphon! The staff are always personable, the coffee is fine, and the food is okay. The prices are a bit on the high side, but that's to be expected from the Main Line. The atmosphere is great. There's an upstairs and downstairs. I've gotten their Chai, which to be honest, wasn't the best, but I've gotten their coffee and almond croissant which were great. The best coffee shop on the main line. Their drinks are awesome--the chai is so good there, also the tea assortment is crazy good (my favorite is the strawberry green tea. YUM) Food-wise they are never a disappointment either. It is probably my favorite place to grab lunch...period. Their sandwiches are so good--hummus sandwich (best creamiest hummus EVER) and the portabella sandwich (this is my favorite portabella sandwich I've ever had). And they have my all time favorite soup, the tomato carrot bisque. I could eat that for days. In fact, I do go there usually every week for lunch. It is kind of small so finding a seat downstairs can be challenging. They sometimes have performances there which are always enjoyable. And the service is good--the only time I was displeased was once when they had forgotten a drink order for my friend and I but then they gave us two free drink coupons for next visit and were very apologetic so I forgave them :) read more

Used to play open mic nights here when I was in college. Very very tiny but it's the atmosphere. Nothing like having the doors open on a summer night and playing some acoustic guitar! It's definitely a kid hangout on the weekends and especially on open night mic. If someone's friend is playing, it's practically chuck e cheese until they're done and then it's empty again. The kind of place that stands on it's own merit and doesn't have hundreds of siblings scattered around the world like a certain coffee house chain that starts with "Star" and ends in "buck." VERY friendly baristas. Delicious coffee drinks that have a homemade flare about them. The decor is rustic and warm with modern influences. On Friday and Saturday nights they have singer/songwriters play live... just an overall fantastic place to go if you're in Wayne for dinner or just passing through. Gryphon Café is one of those "college town-like" establishments I am always pleased to stumble upon when I don't expect to. This of course has much to do with how much I miss my own college town's casual, everyday café, so I always look forward to the opportunity to stop by places like this when I can. My friend and I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for a light lunch and coffee, and I really enjoyed it. They offer a variety of coffee drinks, Italian sodas, etc. which I liked (I had an "ordinary coffee" which was up to snuff) and sandwiches, salads, etc. to go along with it. I had a grilled eggplant panino which was great and pretty big. Served along with chips, it made a nice and very affordably priced lunch. The café isn't too big, but has ample seating and locally made art (for sale) on the walls. The crowd was casual and varied from young to old. This is definitely the kind of place I'd look forward to having in my own area and if I'm ever in Wayne, I'll look forward to another visit. read more

This place is really nice! It's right on Lancaster so it's easy to find (although parking can be a bit sparse on weekends--but it's super cheap to park!). I went on a Saturday afternoon and stayed for a few hours. When I got there at 1 the first floor was super busy and there wasn't anywhere to sit so I took my iced tea (strong, delicious!) upstairs to a nice quiet room with some couches and tables to get work done. My boyfriend met me there for lunch and he had the prosciutto sandwich, which he said was good! There's free wifi but I couldn't find the password so I just used the weak-ish xfinity signal. Overall, it's got a hipster vibe with good food and drinks and main line prices. I'll definitely be back to get some paper writing done! read more

A favorite spot that I will forever remember from college and surely return to. Relaxing, cozy, unpretentious. It's very popular during peak hours so you often have to be strategic in snagging a table. The staff are attentive and nice. Great coffee. Just bear in mind they stock a certain amount of food and can often run out of certain breads, meats, etc. if you come in on the later side of their serving hours (3PM-4PM). Took my little guy here for a treat last night. The barista was very nice and patient as my kiddo took his time picking out what he wanted (he decided on oatmeal craisin cookies, which were awesome). He made him a BIG ol' glass of chocolate milk, too, which was a big hit. There was a generous selection of pastries and goodies, which is sometimes unusual on a Friday night (usually everything's been picked over.) We both loved the artwork and the huge window overlooking the mural out back. Great place to take a break and people watch. We'll be back. :) read more

I had a few hours to kill with my two kids and tried to take in a matinee at the movie theater next door. With no G-rated fare showing there, I took them to the Gryphon instead. The staff was very friendly and helpful, even making me some food after the kitchen had officially closed. We had some lemonade and a latte in addition to the hummus plate and coconut bar. Hummus plate was fine, if a bit unimaginative, and the dessert was scrumptious. But the overall reason for the 4 stars was the vibe. P.S.
