Whenever I come back to visit the fam, I try to make a stop at Gryphon. It's a great neighborhood cafe with a chill atmosphere, perfect for a meet up with friends or a solo work date. I usually get their chai lattes, which are a bit sweet but spice forward (mostly cinnamon and something else i can't quite pinpoint). They have both soy and almond milk as non-dairy options. The Tall Man enjoys their cortados, and I've picked up their beans for satisfying coffee at home. One day we'll have to come back for the nitro and kombucha on tap. They do have lunch options, but I've never tried them. Their pastries are a fresh treat, but often not gluten or dairy free. Sometimes this place can get crowded and a little cramped, but I've often been able to find a seat and/or outlet. read more

Just a scosh hard to see. In a beautiful brick building, not quite on the corner (like Apple Maps told me to believe). Sign is kind of camouflaged by the brick. Walk in and be comfortable: warm coffee shop staffed by cheerful and helpful young staff who make a seriously delicious Americano. Loved the tomato-n-carrot soup, loved the big, chewy and fluffy oatmeal-raisin cookie. Wife and sis-in-law loved their chicken salad sandwiches and we all enjoyed the hard-crisp kettle-style potato chips. I wasn't so fond of my prosciutto and cheese, but I just don't care for the arugula that people say they love. I'm thinkin' no one wants to be the guy who says they don't like arugula. Well, here I am, all y'all! Ick! Upstairs, there's a nice, if warm, area with couches clean but worn in the proper spots, a coffee table and a couple of desks. Nice place to read, study or listen to your music on headphones quietly and peacefully ... until three fairly mature people with stories to tell each other show up with their coffee and lunch. Lovely coffee joint in Wayne. The cappuccinos and vanilla lattes are delicious. Unfortunately it is a small space and seating is limited. Parking on the street was also hard to find. We had to wait for a little while today but it was worth it. The baristas are friendly and make good drinks. read more

My first visit to this Wayne coffee shop. I had an epic chai tea latte made from their homemade concoction of whole spices. They have a bucket of these spices steeping in sugar water which they add to the hot milk. It was too sweet for my tastes as I don't sweeten my tea or coffee but the flavor was bold and warm. I asked the owner if it would be possible to reproduce it at home and he sold me 1/4 pound of the dry spices and said to mix with regular loose black tea. I can't wait to try it out. This is a great little cafe. Their coffee is delicious, and plus, they offer a great selection of food for a variety of dietary needs. My personal favorites are the oatmilk latte, the avocado toast and the hummus place. I love all the interesting art on the walls and the friendly staff. It's a very warm atmosphere with nice lighting. The downstairs is always bustling, and makes a great place to have coffee with a friend. The upstairs area is a quieter, calm space to study. There is one huge problem: the bathrooms. They are two of them, but the women's has been out of order for months. Meanwhile, the only bathroom open has a disgusting urinal which always wreaks a foul odor. Whenever I use the bathroom, I practically have to gag. And if I'm upstairs, I can sometimes smell the bathroom when someone forgets to shut the door. I really wish they'd invest some money and just get the bathrooms redone, as it really cheapens the place. Besides by one gripe about the restrooms, I really do love the gryphon and will be a patron for many years to come. read more

I had some time to kill before a yoga class in the area and so the Yelp app led me to Gryphon. It's a cute little cafe with the frothiest of lattes. The taste was a little bitter for me but got the job done and woke me right on up. There were plenty of tables and I noticed people working, relaxing with friends and reading. It seemed like the kind of place that welcomed people to stay a while. And the baristas were some of the friendliest I've come across. I had to use the bathroom before leaving and I found it at the top of the stairs. For a minute, I thought maybe I was in an area I wasn't supposed to be in, but then I realized the other rooms upstairs were all part of the cafe. I opened the bathroom door and was hit with a wall of pee-smell (technical term). There was one of those gigantic urinals next to the toilet... and if I'm in a room with a urinal it means I'm too close for comfort.* It was probably my fastest bathroom encounter to date. So I'd probably try to avoid having to go on future visits. Otherwise, nice neighborhood spot. *Which is why I only use the back bathroom at Grace Tavern, even though it's roughly the size of my coat closet. read more

It was such a wonderful surprise to come back and find that their is no annoying light bulb or loud music! I was lucky enough to be served by who I hope was the owner. He just had the right touch of friendliness, speed and a great way to communicate with his co-workers and clients, very calm and respectful. I had an Ethiopian regular drip and it was delicious, fruity and little acidic. Just the right amount. Absolutely love this cafe! The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The cafe's walls were filled with various art pieces that customers may purchase if they would like, which I found interesting. I ordered the sea salt caramel latte which was delicious. I read the review about the cafe's croissants and tarts so I just had to try both! I ordered the chocolate croissant and the apricot tart to eat at the cafe. OMG! My taste buds went to heaven! The croissants were super flaky and crispy in every bite! The tart was superb! Great little coffee shop in Wayne. The atmosphere was nice and the coffee was really solid. Their food also looked delicious, but I didn't have time to try it. The only drawback to this place, and the reason they don't get five stars, is that it took forever to get my coffee. So if you are in a hurry, you might want to find another option. The peanut butter cookies are also amazing. They have local art on the wall for sale and other artisan goods, like chocolates and protein bars. Only complaint is that it's usually super busy and there's not enough seating for everyone who visits, but I guess that's a good thing. I love this place! I come here when I need to get a fair amount of work done with a change of scenery. I get black coffee and it never fails. Plus the free refills are an added bonus. Recently I had a flat white with soy milk and that may be my new thing. I've gotten veggie sandwiches here and they're so filling. Perfect fuel to get more work done. Space can be tight so if you find a spot, bunker down and get to work. It's definitely a popular spot and I love the environment. This place has high ceilings and great views. There is certainly no shortage of coffee houses in wayne; standing on the corner of Lancaster and North Wayne there are 6 within short walking distances. But Gryphon stands out among them all. The environment is cozy, sophisticated yet uncomplicated. The menu has fantastic vegetarian options. And yes, the coffee is (I think) the best in town. In addition, Rich is doing some really fabulous things that extend beyond Gryphon (that none of the major chains could do); he buys produce from local, organic farms and uses environmentally friendly cups (corn based plastics and recycled paper cups). He's also done a great job in maintaining the character of the space by refurbishing and restoring elements, thereby giving elements second lives. read more

For those who haven't been to Wayne, it's adorable. Home to the original Anthropologie, Wayne has a central downtown area full of cute, probably overpriced shops, a lovely privately owned moviehouse, and the Gryphon Cafe, a coffee shop of the sort that this original Midwesterner misses. Very pretty decor with very strong coffee, a great list of teas, and excellent sandwich and soup options. Served on beautiful Polish blue floral china and mismatched mugs, the coffee was a great pick-me-up. The 1/2 soup- 1/2 sandwich combination is a perfect amount of food, served with housemade chips. I had the hummus sandwich, which is hummus that is decidedly housemade, and thus of the less garlicky, slightly runnier sort, but really good. Accompanied by cucumber, tomatoes, and arugula, it's a great sandwich on the whole grain bread. The soup I chose was the tomato-carrot, and it was fabulous. The atmosphere is fun and easy-going, and the staff is extremely pleasant. It's also nice to be in a coffee shop with that much space and that little rush to move on. read more
