I've been a mostly-regular for a while now. FDC and I make time to have breakfast together on Sunday mornings. It's a great way to catch up without partners & kids. Today we ordered an item so new that it's not yet on the printed menu: Waffle Sticks. What in the free world are they? Well, picture a waffle shaped like a corn dog, except it's a waffle. I have to say this is like having fun carnival food without the hassle, heat, lines and crazy pricing. I got mine "plain" (you can get chocolate chips inside them) with sides of maple syrup and Nutella for dipping. Yeah? It's Heaven. Gotta give this sweet cat cafe props for a comfy atmosphere and the support the business gives to its resident feline rescues. Loved the experience of dining here. The food and coffee were all right, but a little on the pricier side. My friends and I split our bill and left at different times, so there was a little confusion about what was already paid. But luckily the paid paper receipt covering my friends' orders was discovered, otherwise I would've been stuck paying their bill. This hiccup occurred largely because the bill is paid at the front counter, and it would've been troublesome if the paper receipt was lost in the shuffle had the cafe been busier. Tip: Make sure to tell the server ahead of time who exactly is in your party and how you want the bill split to avoid any confusion. Without a digital system, it can be a little hard to split bills later, especially if people leave at different times. read more

I surprised my daughter by taking her to The Black Cat Cafe for lunch. We have a rescue cat that we adopted as a kitten and love cats. The cafe is cute with lots of cat decor throughout. There were 3 black kittens in cages that we saw as soon as we walked in although we were hoping to see more. The waitstaff was friendly, but after we were seated (behind a wall), I think they forgot about us. After some time, we had to step around the corner and remind someone we were there. Once we ordered, our food arrived quickly. We shared their three-bean veggie chili which was good although I would have liked it to be spicier. It was served in an adorable cat bowl. We also each ordered the Black Cat Combo. I enjoyed the strawberry salad and homemade quiche while my daughter liked her Caesar salad and artichoke grilled cheese. Like, I get that it's on the Main Line, and I understand you can expect to pay more for quality - but the bill for breakfast was $50 for my daughter and me. This is a small, quaint cafe with a home feel. The staff is really friendly and the chef engaged with us which was so welcoming. Everything in our party of 4 was delicious. I had the french onion grilled cheese and wow, it was really good. We visit PA to see our niece at Villanova and we will definitely be back! First off, I love the mission here. All the staff are volunteers and support the nonprofit -- only paid through tips. The space is cozy and homey. The furniture looks a little strewn together, but it works. We came here on a Saturday for a quick bite (and to see the cats up for adoption). The Black Cat Cafe serves up quality food from courteous staff. Note I'm rating this place as I would for any other restaurant, but take any criticisms with a grain of salt as this is a well-meaning nonprofit that actually does the restaurant thing pretty well. Avocado Bacon and Cheese Sandwich - Savory and melty, this sandwich was pretty good. It was a little light on avocado and bacon, but heavy on the cheese. A bit more bacon and avocado would have really made this one great. The sides were great. I really enjoyed the potato salad, which was unassuming but packed a lot of flavor. Okay, I have found my new favorite cafe in the suburbs! This quaint cafe located near the Devon Whole Foods is worth a trip for any and all. The place is little small but the aesthetic is phenomenal! There is antique decor and great cat items such as paintings in the wall. The space is so unique with perfect lighting and they even leave a hand sanitizer on the table for you. When you enter, on your right there are adoptable kittens that you can play with and give a treat! I didn't realize at first that it was a cat cafe and honestly, it is an absolute joy! It's run by all volunteers in support of PALS and cat rescue efforts which means whatever your meal costed goes directly to help support the nonprofit. The food here is phenomenal! I had the pancakes and I was taken aback by the absolutely delicious and fluffy cakes on my plate. They incorporate whatever ingredient you want in them and provide you with real maple syrup. The place smelled amazing with the flavors of breakfast too! The staff are really attentive and engage you with great conversation and fantastic service! The only issue is the parking. There is limited parking however, if you are a seasoned bruncher, you know that there are street parking options if you look. There are a ton of side streets and parking areas around the cafe so you are good to find a spot if all the parking in the lot is taken. I highly recommend this cafe for both filling your tummy with delicious, high quality food and also to support a great cause! read more

Not a place to stay awhile and mingle! The food and ambiance were mediocre, but the most annoying aspect of this establishment was that we felt rushed while we there. There were still open tables, but the wait staff kept hinting that they wanted us to finish our breakfast and coffee and leave. A very cute and quaint restaurant! The waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, as well as other staff. The proceeds go to animal rescue, which made for some nice, guilt free indulgence. The pancake platter was so good! The pancakes were enormous and fluffy and the fruits were surprisingly ripe given that it was winter. We got brunch here today. It's a really cute little cafe with excellent food. There are gluten free and vegan options. Everyone really liked their food. My brother said that the gluten free pancakes were the best he's had. They have someone come in to bake the desserts fresh every day. The proceeds go to rescuing animals as well. There are animals there that are available for adoption and there are cat-themed products available as well. It was nice knowing that the proceeds go toward helping the animals. Cute decor. Friendly, helpful staff. This was my first time visiting, and I will definitely go back. The chef even came out and chatted with us and explained that all of the desserts were baked on Tuesday evenings, so were on Wednesday the day we went. In particular the key lime pie sells out quickly, so we were lucky to get a piece and it was delicious. I had not seen my friend in sometime and we were not rushed at all. We actually spent two lovely hours catching up. Parking can be a challenge but just up the street closer to Route 30 is a deserted building where one can park if you need to. There is parking on the street in addition to the small lot. As the street is narrow, it is not advisable to park on the street. read more

Food is okay. we drove over an hour to check this place out. Nice idea of raising funds for the shelter. I envisioned having breakfast and then going to a separate area to see the cats. I was disappointed they were in cages and not allowed to touch them. We would love coming to the Black Cat Café even if they didn't support as good a cause as the cat rescue they do. They have a really nice variety of food (especially considering the size of the place), including many options for my vegetarian husband. I especially recommend any of their quiches and the mushroom barley soup. My husband's go-to is their vegan BLT. Some of the seating is not especially comfortable, but some of it is quite comfy and the decor is adorable. Upon entry, you'll find a sort of gift shop with many beautiful, cute, and useful cat- and pet-themed gifts - and maybe even a few kittens! Great service is delivered by friendly workers who are knowledgeable about the menu, or at least willing to go to the kitchen and ask what they don't know. My only issue with the café is that between Yelp!, Facebook (your best bet), and their website, it can be really difficult to determine if and when they are open and what meals (breakfast or not) they are serving. I said Facebook is your best bet but if you're willing to actually -- gasp! --talk to human, calling is really your best bet- if they're open and answering the phone! read more

Food is Good - Other Things Hurt It Arrived on a Sunday afternoon with my son. Walked in and wasn't acknowledged for a good 5 mins despite people seeing me standing there holding a 2 year old. One of the workers had seated the people ahead of me but didn't address me at all so I stood there awkwardly as multiple workers (and the same woman seating ppl) walked by until I finally just went up to the window where you pay your bill and I had to ask if they had room for one and a high chair. The woman who served us, however, was absolutely wonderful. I could see she was busy, and I had to wave her down for the check, but I know that she was wearing a lot of hats doing takeout orders, serving other tables, and answering the phone. I am more than okay with this. I just am not really okay being ignored. I think people can understand that. And really, she was spectacular. Also, no parking. It's difficult to find anything even on the street. My son and I had some blueberry pancakes and a breakfast burrito. Both were great and no complaints. This is a great breakfast place, The issues I had, I'm sure, wouldn't happen on the next visit (except parking obviously) but I can't rate them for that. Just this trip! read more

The idea behind this café is better than the execution. However, it is a cute place that is still worth visiting, especially if you like supporting animal rescues. The café is entirely volunteer-run, and all proceeds go to the local P.A.L.S. animal rescue. The café is very cute inside in a mix-and-match quirky household way, and they have a lot of fun art on the walls. They also have a store in the parlor waiting area with all sorts of items, both pet related and otherwise, that you can buy to further support the animal rescue and its mission. I thought that was very clever, and there's quite a variety of goods for sale, from sparkly pet collars to vintage style tea service sets. Since the café is run by volunteers who have not necessarily had server experience (and, I assume, same for the chefs) the service is very friendly but not as efficient as you might encounter in a regular restaurant. I think it's important to account for that and adjust expectations accordingly. What I did think was a little disappointing was the quality of the food. Mine was very bland--maybe I should have ordered something more interesting than the tofu scramble, but I've also had some pretty great tofu scrambles before. The side of tempeh bacon was uninspiring, and I love tempeh in almost any form. Honestly, I could make both much better at home. Plus the food came out lukewarm. I was also a bit put off by the confusion of what was vegan and what was not on the menu--I would think an animal rescue café would be better at this. There was a "Vegan Garfield Special" on the menu, which is essentially a sampler platter of all the breakfast items, and it included a pancake. There are not vegan pancakes on the rest of the menu, so I asked whether this meant they could make them on request, and whether it was possible to order, say, vegan blueberry pancakes. I was told that the café does not have vegan pancakes. Since the "vegan special" clearly lists pancakes, I thought this meant they were out of vegan pancakes that day, and asked whether this means that the pancake would be substituted by something else. No, I was told, the special comes with the pancake; but the pancake is not vegan, because they NEVER have vegan pancakes. I was pretty baffled by the idea of listing something as a "vegan special" when it came with a non-vegan ingredient, and all the more so that this was in no way disclosed until I specifically asked about it. It made the rest of my meal somewhat uncomfortable, because I felt I couldn't trust whether what I was eating was in fact vegan or not, even though after the pancake revelation, I made sure to double check with the server on every item I received. So I would also warn any persons with food allergies or sensitivities to double check with the wait staff on whether *every* item of your meal is suitable for you. read more

There are cats there for adoption (I think) so if you're allergic to cats, it isn't the easiest place to dine.
