Visited on a Saturday morning around 10am. We were in a hurry and told them so and they seated us quickly, got our food in a timely manner and received excellent service for a small boutique breakfast spot. Very reasonably priced, unique setting and the food is good for what you pay for it. Not necessarily something you would go out of your way for but great when visiting Devon. Also if you like cats you will love this as most of the people working the restaurant are all volunteers and the funds go towards helping rescue cats. Not sure of the business model but definitely a unique spot. If you don't like cats, or are allergic I would avoid coming here. read more

I thought my brunch at Black Cat was average. The place is definitely cute and homely. Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating but I did get a weird vibe from one of the women up front. Anyway, onto the brunch... Mushroom omelette - just a regular omelette with goat cheese, mushrooms, and greens. Nothing really made this stand out and could easily be replicated at home. French Toast - I'm used to fluffy and full brioche French toast but this felt a bit "deflated". Tasted fine though, but I was hungry afterwards. read more

Parking is a bitch. You get hollered at by customers in the brewing coffee shop next door where there is a parking lot if you park there. The cafe ads on Facebook look lovely but I didn't see the cute array of choices on the menu. I was made to feel grateful that I got a seat since I didn't have a reservation. There isn't much dining area and it is tight seating. Confusing to see cats while people are standing in the same waiting area to be seated. Food was decent and I had a nice server. We had quite a lovely breakfast experience at this cafe. I had the two eggs and bacon and my friend had the breakfast sandwich on a biscuit. The breakfast sandwich had a fine sharp cheddar cheese. And I would note that my wheat toast was hearty and delicious. Overall, very tasty and I appreciate how they even took the time to add a garnish. Details count. The idea of the Black Cat Cafe is fantastic. However the attitude and respect given people by the staff does not live up to the idea. On our last two visits we waited well over an hour for food. But our last visit it became absurd. We are a family of 5. Which is obviously way to large a group for the Black Cat to handle. When we arrived they were packed. Meaning all 6 table inside were finishing their meals as was one table outside. We were told they were backed up and would we mind if it took sometime. And then were asked not to write a bad review after our meal. So we agreed and sat down. They ended up taking our order within 5 mins. We got our drinks 15 mins later. Its charitable organization so no big deal. Then after 45 mins we had to use the restroom. When we walked inside there was a whole new group of people sitting at every table...different people then when we arrived...all FINISHING their meals. Most groups of 2 or 3. They prioritized later arriving guests ahead of us. Feed them and moved on only making our food once all those people were eating. During the hour we sat their our server came once. I had to go back inside to ask for another drink...he rolled his eyes at me as if I was asking for something ridiculous after an hour. Finally at hour and 15 min mark our youngest slipped off the picnic table hitting his head. Its hard for a child under 8 to sit still at picnic table for an hour and an half. After that happened I politely found a server said we can't wait any longer...paid for the drinks and left. As we were walking to the car the lady who asked we don't write a bad review when we arrived chased us down the street screaming at as..."how dare we waste all that food"...seriously chased us. No apologies...no explanation as to why she fed people who arrived after us ahead of my kids...just screamed down the street. I still support the idea...and if that means you only accept groups of 2...then tell people that. But don't ignore people...and then make an ass out of yourself in public when your lack of simple communication causes things to not go your way. read more

Simple and homey breakfast spot. The ambiance is inviting, laid back, and of course, full of decors related to pets. The also sell pet products, and all profits go to PALS rescue and adoption. They don't have their own coffee (for that you go next door to Pour Richard's), but their mugs are cuter. Their breakfast combo and omelets are very good. Fresh and tasty. Every items is 4-star worthy. There are several breakfast spots in the area, but why not dine somewhere with delicious food with a great cause - 100% of proceeds go towards PALS. read more

A friend stumbled upon this café online and we decided to meet there for lunch last week. They only serve breakfast and lunch, but the menu is actually quite large--large enough that we both struggled to decide what to order! We wound up getting Black Cat Combos, which consisted of a bowl of homemade soup and half of a grilled cheese sandwich. I opted for the Tuscan chicken soup and a grilled havarti and apple; he opted for the tomato bisque and a French onion-inspired grilled cheese with Swiss, caramelized onions, and a little side of au jus for dipping. Both were absolutely delicious! The chef/manager stopped by to chat with us several times and you can tell that she takes great pride in her food. We weren't hungry enough for dessert, but when we heard that key lime pie was an option we each ordered a piece to go (and agreed that it, too, was excellent). The café is owned by PALS animal rescue and staffed by volunteers. There is a cute little gift shop in the lobby where you can purchase cat toys and other cat-themed items, and 100% of the proceeds go to PALS. There were also two adoptable cats to visit with, which we enjoyed very much. As animal lovers, we went primarily to support the cause and didn't necessarily expect much from the food--but we were very pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere was comfortable, the cat-themed decor was adorable, the people were super friendly, and we look forward to going back sometime soon. Remember to tip well, if you go, because the staff are volunteers! Edited to add: parking may be challenging. There's a tiny lot right in front of the café, but I think it only accommodates 5 cars. Street parking nearby appeared to be permit only, though you'd likely be fine chancing it for an hour or two, especially on a weekday. Also, the manager noted that Saturdays and Sundays are very busy, so aim for a weekday if you can! read more

This is a hidden gem AND a non-profit restaurant! All proceeds go directly to care for and find homes for the animals they rescue. Stumbled on the Black Cat Cafe while visiting relatives in Paoli. I had grilled cheese with bacon and tomato on sourdough bread and it could not be any better. Attention All cat lovers!  I've found you the perfect spot to eat!  This is a delightful and whimsically decorated place and there are kitties in crates there for you to adopt.  The manager and chef came over and made sure we were happy with our food.   She said their specialties are their tuna fish and chicken salad.  She makes the soup herself there daily and she brought out samples of the butternut squash, mushroom soup and vegetarian chili.. all delicious.... my favorite was the butternut squash. We got the vegan french toast with tempeh bacon and eggs with toast.  Many gluten-free and vegan options.  Most of the proceeds go towards rescuing cats.  There is a bunch of fun cat-inspired shopping you can do at the front.  I bought cat earrings, a cat necklace and a cat hat.    They even brought out a kitty for us to pet.   Most of the wait staff there are volunteers and work for tips since they are helping the cause ( supporting cats that need to be rescued)  Warning:  Don't eat inside here if you have cat allergies.  There is heated outside seating though if you are covid-conscious or have allergies though.  This is a great casual, family-friendly place to have a simple meal or a ridiculous ice-cream sundae.   I give this place five meows! read more

We opted for the vegan blueberry pancakes (my son said he would skip the blueberries next time (too many for him) but the pancakes were delicious.. he had to ask if they were really vegan....) and I opted for the tofu scramble... It's sad because we loved this place and the food is generally very good, but the owner/chef Judy has driven us away. During COVID, there were regular complaints from her about people inconveniencing the staff because they wanted to eat outside when there were open tables inside. We have an unvaccinated daughter we want to keep safe, and we took the hint and began ordering take out, even when they started to add large fees for takeout containers (I'm talking $20+ fees for a pancake board takeout). It's a charity and we want to support it. But Judy often shouts at her staff in a way that makes everyone really sad and uncomfortable to witness. The last time we went in, she urged us to sit inside (we were picking up takeout in masks), and when we explained that we didn't feel safe inside at the moment because of our young daughter, she told us to just let her get sick. She said, "dirt is good for kids." I'm sorry, COVID is not the same as playing in the mud. We would be back in a heartbeat if Judy treated her staff and her customers better. read more

This place was so cute. I know the reviews talk about it being a great cause but only mediocre food but that wasn't the experience for my party of 8. We all loved our breakfast and especially appreciated how accommodating they were to all our special dietary needs. I loved that I could get greens as a side for breakfast and skip the bread and they had soy creamer. The staff were super friendly and helpful. And of course we loved that our money went to a good cause. But I would come back here just for the food and service too. read more

The Black Cat Cafe is a nice little restaurant/cafe set up in a one story structure that looks to be a former house. They have nice breakfast/brunch/lunch options. Service is friendly but a little slow. It seems they have only 1-2 cooks, which accounts for the slow service. The proceeds benefit cat rescue, which is a great concept for a cafe! There is a cat gift shop in the front too. I am highly allergic to cats and was concerned there may be cats that had been in the cafe. My allergies were ok there, so it seems none had ventured indoors. Parking is incredibly limited, so plan accordingly. read more

My sister asked me to go to Black Cat Cafe this weekend. My family often went to tea at the tea room that occupied the building before Black Cat Cafe opened, so I was interested to see what replaced it. Black Cat Cafe is operated by a non-profit organization that supports pet rescue and is run by volunteers- and all meals are tax-free. We made reservations for 12:30 on a Saturday. During our meal, there were only about 4 tables occupied, and a few empty- it would be safe to stop in here on Saturdays without a reservation. The decor was cute and they had tons of pictures of cats and dogs around the cafe. We were seated right away, but weren't given menus and our table wasn't set. The couple next to us handed us their menus and said, "here- we don't need these anymore". (Their food came in the next 5-10 minutes, so I think the waitress forgot to pick the menus up from their table). The good surprise: they were serving breakfast, and they had some great vegetarian and vegan options as well. Eventually a waitress came by and asked us what drinks we wanted- we all ordered iced teas, which were really good. When she brought them a bit later, she forgot to give us straws or spoons- I had to ask. Eventually she took our food order. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. It took about an hour from the time we sat down until our food arrived. (Except for soup- one of the 3 of us ordered soup, and that came out about 20 minutes before the rest of our food). However, once the food came out, it was pretty tasty. We had to be somewhat aggressive to get things we needed- more iced tea, ketchup, etc. However, in the end, everything tasted good, and everything was quite cheap ($27 for 3 people). I'd come back again for the food, and if the service improved a bit, this would easily be a 5-star place. On the way out, we quickly browsed their shop area- they had some items you could buy to support the SPCA (t-shirts, mugs, keychains, etc.) and some yummy looking scones and brownies. Apparently when it is nicer out, they also have adoption days where they bring dogs and cats out to the site for you to spend time with before or after your meal (and consider adopting, of course!). If you love cats i get it me too and i was more than excited for this but we got there and it took more than 15 minutes to get the attention of a server/host and even when we did she would tell us to give her a minute but that went on for more than 15 minutes :( the entire time i felt cramped in this place , we were basically touching the other people there and could hear every little detail especially when the people next to us started gagging repetitively. The people were so nice, the food was great, and the atmosphere was comfy. It had an afternoon tea kind of feel to the place. The rooms were well decorated and gave the place a very home like feel to it. It was a little pricey, but I also love that all proceeds go to their animal shelter! We came here on a Saturday morning and they seemed especially frazzled to say the least. Tables were empty but covered in dirty dishes, the woman I'm assuming was the owner was yelling at the staff from the back and everyone could hear it. Several orders were messed up while we sat there - you could also hear the lady asking in the back if butter had milk in it - because one of the tables sent back their vegan meal because the butter was clearly not vegan (if you're vegan, you know). None of mine and my husbands food had any seasoning on it and both were cold. My order came out wrong and when i remarked it was wrong they took it back and then it came out completely different and still wrong. What do you do at that point? My super picky daughter loves cats, so to make up for the Dim Sum "you tricked me into eating WHAT?" tantrum of the day before we went here after a morning touring Valley Forge. I wasn't expecting a ton... we were entirely there because of the cats, but I am so glad we gave them a shot! The food was absolutely delicious: I got the French Onion grilled cheese, which I have to figure out how to recreate at home because I've been dreaming of it since. We were in the area today and stopped in for breakfast. The place is certainly unique! The atmosphere and experience had a very "small town" feel to it. All of the ingredients were fresh and the menu even had vegan breakfast options, which is so rare to see! We loved that they offered seasonal drinks with breakfast such as apple cider and pumpkin spiced coffee. Our waitress was very friendly and sweet and the food was great. My only recommendation to the restaurant would be to serve the drinks in larger glasses. We would definitely return! read more
