Omg. I get it now. I am officially obsessed…read more Walking into Famous 4th Street Delicatessen feels like stepping back in time in the best way. The black and white tiled floors are that classic checkerboard style that has a little shine to them from years of use. The walls are covered with photos and memorabilia, booths are cozy and a little worn in, and everything just feels alive. Not trendy retro. Actually retro. We ordered kreplach soup, a massive pastrami sandwich with latkes, and blintzes. Let me tell you. The kreplach soup was pure comfort. Clear, golden broth that tasted like it had been simmering all day. The dumplings were soft but still held their shape, filled generously with seasoned meat. Not skimpy at all. It tasted like someone's grandma made it with love and zero shortcuts. The pastrami sandwich was absolutely unhinged in size. Like cartoonishly tall. The pastrami was warm, tender, peppery, and sliced thick. Juicy without being greasy. Stacked so high you have to strategize how to eat it. The latkes were crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, with that perfect salty potato flavor. Add a little applesauce or sour cream and it is game over. The blintzes were my sweet ending. Thin, delicate crepe wrapped around creamy cheese filling, lightly pan fried so the outside had that slight golden crisp. Topped with fruit that cut through the richness just enough. Not overly sweet. Just right. Everything was huge. Truly astonishing portions. If I lived nearby I would gain so much weight and I would not even be mad about it. It was absolutely packed, but the service never felt rushed. Our server took the time to explain what things were since it was our first visit and even talked a bit about the cultural background of the dishes. That meant a lot. It did not feel like just another table to flip. Now I understand why it is a Bib Gourmand spot. And as if the meal was not enough, they hand you cookies with the receipt. Just casually. Like here, take a little joy with you on the way out. No notes. Perfect meal. Already planning my return.
