The Gryphon is, for me, the definition of what an elegant, relaxed, high-quality cafe should be. I first started frequenting the Gryphon the year it opened and spent many a day there working on reading, research, writing or grading during my years in grad school or on faculty at Villanova. I have never had better espresso anywhere, or experienced cafe staff so elegantly welcoming and serious about quality at the same time. If you want to spend some quiet time by yourself or with a friend, the Gryphon will give you that; if you want to meet brainy creative people, smart students, college professors, or some of the warmest people in the area, you can find them here too. Wherever I go in the world, I think of the Gryphon's beautiful yellow walls, high ceiling, big windows, warm staff and always active sense of community. I have never found another cafe like it anywhere, but I would recommend anyone running a cafe visit this one and see what makes it work. We ordered a couple of drinks and a couple of pastries, and expected the bill to come to around $10-$12. It ended up being around $19. And they were out of the mugs to dine-in, so they gave us to-go cups. And I'm fairly certain that the to-go cup they gave me was not the equivalent of what I saw was for a large cappuccino in a mug (and not filled to close to the top). Came into this little gem of a cafe on a rainy Tuesday morning. I was going to take my coffee to go but it was so cozy inside I decided to stay. I had a skim latte, complete with latte art, and a really delicious millet muffin. They also had almond croissants, pains au chocolat etc. Prices are typical hipster coffee prices - I think my medium latte was $3.75 and the muffin was about the same. I have to say, though, service was incredibly slow. There's only one barista and she's clearly a perfectionist, which I appreciate given that I'm a coffee snob, but it took about 15 mins from the time I ordered at the counter to the time she brought my coffee over to my table. I must agree with most of the reviews on here. The coffee is exquisite. The staff is very friendly. There's place upstairs where you can sit and lounge - it's terrific to relax and read a book. There are many up on the laptop and iPad which is a bit distracting but it does remain quiet for most of the part. This is not at all like starbucks which to me is a sort of gathering place for people that like noise and activity. Apart from the occasional tight spots where you might have to share a table, I think is a great place to come even if it's just for a quick coffee or latte. read more

We go here probably every day. The Coffee is strong, but absolutely delicious. It's very flavorful. Just beware...it is strong! Their sandwiches and salads are wonderful, especially their chicken salad. The only problem is, service could be a little slow at times, so make sure you keep enough money in your meter. The staff has changed recently, which is a bummer, and sometimes like I said above, it could be a little slow to order...especially when they are conversing with the the person who just ordered, even after the person had paid. It is however, worth the wait! They have this amazing shot called the Habanero Lemonade, and its spicy. The first few times I've had it, it was great. It's a great way to wake up in the morning... Until today. Make sure they shake it up, and don't just pour you the habanero pulp. I've unfortunately took a shot today of the habanero pulp. Bad mistake. I think I'll go back to their coffee and tea. In conclusion. Gryphon Cafe has been a neighborhood staple in Wayne for many years, and they never fail to impress, just keep in mind that you can wait for a little bit, especially with ordering food. This place has quickly become my favorite local coffee shop. The music is always unique, the staff seems genuinely happy to be there which easily translates to good service, and the cucumber and hummus sandwich is so good I've yet to try anything else. They serve lovely hand crafted lattes and such too. Although I'm not local to Wayne, it's so nice seeing the regulars get recognized by name by the staff; a true mark of a successful restaurant of the community. Simply put, the Grypon Cafe makes me feel infinite. It's about two minutes away from the Wayne Starbucks, but believe me when I say that all the cool informed coffee connoisseurs flock to Gryphon Cafe. Its setting is quiet and intimate.It exudes a chill and serene vibe, from its very dim lighting and small (in a good way!) space. The lattes are very good- made with strong espresso. In addition, it provides various baked goods, although I've had a really dry, stale brownie from there (A big no-no! As a result, I don't care too much for the baked goods). Its the Cheers of coffee cafes. Located across the street from my work , I'm there daily , have established a first name basis with staff and rarely have to order as they already know what I want. Conversation always ensues and more often than not I leave feeling like I ran into an old friend rather than picked up my daily caffeine fix. I hate to admit it but I've become a bit of a coffee snob and crave the gryphon's rotating selection of premium coffees, local pastries (huge gluten free selection to include double chocolate canollis!), and fresh fruits and veggies to accompany lunch and dinner. I have been going to the Gryphon for well over 8 years. I love the place so much I wouldn't hesitate to name my first born, Gryphon. I'm a complete tea snob and feel utterly at peace inside the Gryphon. Mostly because I became a tea snob inside these very walls. But where to begin!? As I've mentioned, their tea is to die for. I know it sounds dramatic but they have dozens of loose teas to pick from that are served in individual mismatched tea pots. (I prefer the brown pot with a yellow lid, and yes some barista's remember weird quirks like this!) I know nothing about coffee but my friends seem to enjoy it and I've never heard any complaints. As for other beverages, they serve a wide array of italian sodas, hot chocolate, and delicious limeaid. The baked goods are also tasty. What draws me to the Gryphon is the connections I've made over the years. I've gotten to know tons of musicians over the years from the Monday night open mics, and the live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Everyone has been warm and inviting and maybe that's because the place is small. Sometimes you have to share tables with stranges which result in friendly conversations with old, and young alike. Looking to have a quieter conversation? Check out the room upstairs with a large table and some couches, perfect for if you're with a group. Now for the artwork, there's always something to look at. I'm not always a fan but hey am I supposed to like everything I see? I just appreciate that a place like the Gryphon is connecting artists, musicians, and consumers. I encourage you to go to Starbucks down the street. Order a latte a cappuccino or even just a basic coffee. Take a few sips, savoring the burnt coffee taste while driving over to the Gryphon. Now walk in & order the same drink you ordered at Starbucks Compare & contrast. I guarantee you you'll never get a coffee drink at Starbucks again. I always get my drinks to go, so I can't comment on the food or live music. But I can tell you the people working there are always friendly & the lattes are always consistent. A great alternative to Starbuck's chain atmosphere and burnt-tasting coffee roasts. The Gryphon is what a coffee spot should be. A mix of young, and not so young clientele. The coffee offerings are good, but not superb. Other beverages are also good-offbeat sodas, homemade lemonades, and really decent hot chocolate. The food works in a pinch, but more about the beverages. The only downside is that it has been overrun by "the Wayne ladies who lunch," and a fair number of "alternative" poseurs wearing crocs. I would probably give this place four stars just for the ambiance, which is homey, comfortable and generally sustains just the right volume level. Service is always friendly, and if you're lucky you'll get to see the owner's ADORABLE little girls running around "helping." As for coffee, I've only had mochas here, and they're absolutely perfect about 90% of the time. Their teas are really lovely, both for flavor/variety and presentation (they come in a charming little teapot, and all drinks are served in really beautifully patterned cups). This place used to be good. I have been going here since I was in high school when it opened. I recently returned after a number of years out of the area. I am very disappointed with the decline in service and cleanliness. If Rich is still the owner, he really needs to get the place back on track. 4 stars for the espresso drinks and friendly staff. I must mention I have never and am afraid to try the food items. I have observed the staff preparing ready to eat food with bare hands, repeatedly. So, I'm assuming there is no training or enforcement with gloves etc. Its bad. I need a place to work for a couple hours in a laid back environment and this was perfect. it is a little on the small side so I would say to get there early so that you can stake your claim. An early Sunday morning pre-9 AM stop plucked me into a NYTimes dissecting frenzy of a crowd. Great Cafe, was there yesterday, and good service and I felt at home right away, ordered a mocha and had some delicous toast w/ hummus and felt quite at ease. The staff was polite and yay!! for the beautiful latte art that the Barista whipped up. I'm glad to have found this little gem, as I went to school in Boston and now transitioning back to PA and Grad School in the area. It makes me happy that theres a good cafe with excellent coffee on par to what I had in Cambridge!!!
