I will never claim to be some kind of pizza expert but I liked this place. Things I loved: -Kids menu -Employee working the gelato case up front. -My friend who has celiac disease can order gluten free pizza here and NOT get sick which means the kitchen is careful about cross-contamination for allergies. -Gelato -They give your kids balloons. Things I did not love: -The arcade and how nobody told us you can't redeem any prizes for your tickets because the prize thing was broken. Made for some sad kids. I mean c'mon! I want a sample sized laffy taffy for spending $20 dollars in your arcade!!! -Mediocre table service. -Cleanliness of the arcade area and bathroom. -They give your kids balloons. This pizza is so gross. They were selling pies at the Nascar event and besides being overpriced, there was barely any cheese on it. It was thick and cold. Too much nasty sauce. Ate here for the first time about two weeks ago. It took me time to write the review as I really want to be sure that I am fair with this review......here it goes..... Went here with a friend and we ordered a large pepperoni pizza. How bad could this be? The pizza was not good ( not even hot), barely had any flavor. I know a lot of people like this place. However, I do not. It was not very clean, the food was not good and the drinks were over priced. If you are looking for a night out to eat pizza and drinks....do not come here. I am thinking other people really love this place for the price for kids as they do have a large variety of different pizzas. I just don't know why anyone likes this place. I am a firm believer that if a restaurant does not make good pepperoni pizza, then don't try any of the other pizza.... Therefore, I will not try any other type of pizza here. Food was great but our server was terrible. It took her forever to come back to our table to take our order and when she did she was not engaging at all and acted like it was an inconvenience. She did not take our menus after taking our order. So they got left on the table. I ordered a drink from the bar and it took 15 minutes till I got it. We had no silverware or napkins with our appetizer and had to flag down another server to get that, because our server never came back to check on us. When our pizza arrived we had no plates or napkins so the food runner had to get that for us. Then our appetizer that we had finished sat at our table the whole time we ate dinner and was never romoved till she asked us if we needed a box for our pizza. Dover has a Grotto Pizza place. Finally! I like to say that Delaware is famous for three things. Tax free shopping, speed traps, and Grotto Pizza. I really like the pizza. We had seen that this location was coming to the spot that was formerly occupied by Atlantic Books. It is a big location, and it is big inside. Don't let a lack of parking out front fool you into thinking that the restaurant is full up inside. Since my in-laws live in Dover, this will be the Grotto that I frequent the most I would think. The fourth thing that Delaware is becoming famous for is Dogfish Head beer. The Grotto restaurants I've been in, in Rehobeth and in Seaford have carried Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA on tap. The waitress originally had me a little concerned when she didn't mention this delicious brew after I asked for a list of beers. "Oh and we have Dogfish..." Whew, and yes! The pizza we had is called "The Bakers Choice". It's basically a supreme pizza. The server asked if we wanted anchovies. My wife said she'd have them on the side. That was a nice touch. The pie has a nice flavor. Good crust, tasty cheese and meats. I think what makes the pizza is garlic. That may be the secret ingredient. Grotto serves a full menu, beyond pizza, and has a selection of hand made gelatos for dessert. We skipped that part of the meal, but they do look good. The rest room was clean. One of the no-water urinals was kind of backed up, but on the whole it smelled and looked okay in there. The cost of a pizza, a large serving of craft beer, and iced tea for Marletha? $26. I don't usually eat at chain restaurants because the food often includes TBHQ, BHT, sodium benzoate, and other artificial ingredients I'd rather not consume. But since Grotto Pizza is a small chain, I thought perhaps they would have some all-natural items on their menu. I emailed them and they were nice enough to email me back, saying that their cheese pizza is all-natural. They said that they couldn't be more specific than that since the menu and ingredients varies some from location to location, and that we'd have to ask the manager about each specific menu item at our location if we wanted more choices. And so we went and ordered a cheese pizza. (Husband ordered ground beef on his half of the pizza. You know how husbands are. They need protein. They're still growing boys, after all.) Our barely smiling server brought it to us after a brief wait. The wait was long enough to bake a pizza, but not so long that we were wondering when the pizza was going to show up. The pizza is a thin crust. It bends in a half like New York style pizza. The cheese is baked right on top of the dough. Then comes a swirl of sauce on top of the cheese layer. I must admit, the swirl pattern looks really appetizing, makes you want to dive right in. But it makes for an uneven ratio of sauce to dough to cheese. The cheese was really melty and stretchy. It gives you that nice cheese pizza feeling you craved at age 5, where you pull a piece of it and the cheese stretches between your fingers big time. But the cheese is too greasy. The sauce is too sweet. And the crust is lackluster. So yes, I've had better pizzas. However, I think if I was age 4-12 again, this pizza might be my pizza standard, for the pretty swirl, sweet taste, and stretchy-just-like-a-TV-commercial cheese. The place is very casual. There was a small handful of servers milling about acting like they didn't have anything to do. There's a bunch of brightly colored flavors of gelato to tempt you at the counter as soon as you walk in. They seemed too neon to be tempting to me, however. There's a TV (with remote) at every booth. There's a small arcade for the kids and teenagers. There's a separate bar for the drinkers that want to watch ESPN. And there's plenty of booths and tables for those that want to sit down next to their friends and text their other friends like normal people. So yeah, this place is fun for the whole family. read more

I LOVE grottos pizza it is my FAVORITE pizza and i have always loved it ever since i was a kid my parents used to take me here on my birthday and it usually held up to my expectations. That was until I went to the dover location. It was like my pizza was made but a high schooler and rushed I do not think it was cooked all the way because the dough was still a little chewy which is defiantly not how it ever tasted. My wifes salad which was supposed to be a crispy chicken salad came with just one lump of chicken not even cut up and a very small amount of dressing. I just had dinner at Grotto Pizza and I am so very happy I decided to try them (I pulled into Chipoltle, but they were too busy, thank goodness) I ordered the Southwest chicken bolis and a side salad. The salad was good size and had onion, black olive, cherry tomatoes and cucumber. Really good house salad. The southwest chicken bolis, basically a calzone, was fantastic! The portion size was huge. There was a nice spicy flavor which I really like. The manager recommended adding the honey Chipoltle sauce which comes on the pizza. You really don't need the sauce, but it was a nice extra kick. I would highly recommend Grotto Pizza; the food was great, the service was exceptional, and the atmosphere was family friendly and very pleasant. The price was very reasonable. The perfect place for our family of 6 (7th is away in Paris)! After an exciting day on the beach (full of the scary reality check that parents have no relaxation at a beach with kids that involves big waves)....it was perfect to head to the boardwalk and find this place! Our family has to have the gluten free option so it can be challenging sometimes to find a place that caters to those needs. Oh but Grotto's was on it. The wait was 5 minutes. We got a front seat, which gave us such a beautiful view of the ocean and the sunset. Pretty Exhale. Our waiter was tentative. We had a these loaded french fries/potato skins with bacon and jalapeños that was off the chain! Only complaint was how small the plate was! Yes, so the cheese was that velvetta cheese of your child hood...yes the kind that turns into instant cellulite....but hey. i don't know what to say. yes, i ate it. The pizza was solid. Nothing to dramatic but it definitely wasn't bland. You know how you can get those thin crust pizzas that are bland and nearly burnt? Well they didn't burn it. It had a decent flavor. Then the gluten free pizza crust was just as good as the regular crust. So I'm still breastfeeding...and sand in that area was not making the baby happy at all. So I had to go to my pet peeve place: the public bathroom, to clean up. It wasn't horrible, it wasn't great. Add an ongoing air freshener in there and things would really be solid. Very disappointing. Terrible service. Brought meal approximately 20 mins after pizza was served. One of our guests are alone. Spilled drink, received no assistance for clean up although another server was beside us. Panini was loaded with too much Gorgonzola and overpowered the entire sandwich. I was on vacation with my family and dined in at Grotto's for lunch. I received my bill towards the end after having less than great service from our waitress and still tipped over what should've been tipped based on the bill. We left. The next day I check my bank statement and then transaction had cleared but there was an additional $10.00 that was added to an already $15.00 tip. I called more than a few times and spoke to a manager who was not helpful and did not do anything. I had to go through my bank to dispute the amount to cancel it. This is fraud! My friends and I heard nothing but good things about this place and were shocked when we actually got there. Not only was the service absolutely terrible but our pizza was under cooked. We showed up close to close and before 12:00am the manager insisted we leave even though I had checked that it was ok to eat there. They said our pizza would be 15-20 minutes giving us 30 minutes to eat but instead it took 35 minutes and they tried to kick us out instead of eat in house even though I put in the order at 11:10. The pizza is over priced and they barely put any cheese on your pizza. They try to sell you on their swirl for their sauce but what they need to do is put more sizzle in their sauce rather then swirls because it lacks flavor. If your from the south and don't know what good pizza tastes like go eat away but if your from the east coast then you can tell easily. $20 for a lousy plain pizza I'll pass. read more

The food was overpriced but still good. Lots of options and yummy pizza. My real issue with this place was the staff over-serving drinks. A large group of already intoxicated adults were served three rounds of shots in the 45 minutes that I was there- but it was obvious they'd been drinking the whole night. Extremely rowdy and loud and the wait staff did nothing to control them. When it was time for them to leave I was extremely disappointed that the staff allowed them to drive. Grotto Pizza is one of those places specoal to Delaware and many years after the one in Middletown shut down there's one I don't have to drivee to Newark or the beach to get to. The cost is a little more than the one on UD campus which is why I gave it a four. The pizza, however, is just as good as the beach one. It is very different than traditional Italian pizza, but I always reccomend visiting family and feiends give it a shot. So far there have been no disappointments. read more
