I have been to Grottos countless times but this was my first time since the rebuild. They did a great job and I love the new layout w the open garage doors and the big tvs for game watching. Grottos pizza is delicious. I know that not everyone agrees but I love the sauce and for me that makes a delish pie. So why not 5 stars? Because their pizzas are getting smaller and smaller. The large pie did not even approach the end of the tray which is kind of bs when you are paying $26 for your pizza w one topping. Also, we ordered anchovies (bc that is our thing) and I think they cut 2 or 3 little anchovy strips into tiny pieces and disbursed it around the whole pie. It just seemed so cheap on their end. We used to come every week but we really don't come much anymore since they cheaped out. This visit was a good reminder why. read more

A beach trip without Grotto's is unheard of. This new location is conveniently located along the main drag way. No parking so walk or Uber. Tons of seating. They have a bar area as well. Lovely garage doors that allow the breeze in add to the welcoming space. There's even a carry out area. Lots of TV's of staying to eat. Tables and booths are available. Cute decor and it was even decorated for the holiday (Memorial Day). Our server (Addie) was terrific! She was super friendly and very accommodating. Our food was out quickly. Ordered a pizza (a must), wings, and a salad. All were fabulous. The salad was delicious!! Shocked that a pizza place had such a lovely salad. Very fresh. And the pizza - a must. Are you even at the Delaware beaches if you're not eating Grotto's? We are here for a week and have visited the Rehoboth Ave. location a couple of times, which is our go-to location because they allow dogs on their patio. But we are staying in Dewey so, one evening when everybody was exhausted and didn't want to go out, we decided to get takeout from this nearby, newly remodeled location. The old location here had an outdoor space where dogs were allowed; sadly this one does not. But it is a big, shiny new location and the whole thing opens up to let the nice weather soak in, like during this beautiful October week. Although I know their pizza is a little divisive, we love it. But we've had it a lot this week so this time we got something different and went with pastas. My pappardelle Alfredo was surprisingly tasty for coming from a pizza shop, and came with two slices of garlic bread. Since I didn't realize this I had also ordered a side of cheesy garlic bread, which came with about six pieces. I placed the order online which was quick and convenient, you get an estimated pickup time and they were spot on with it. There are a number of spaces alongside the restaurant to park if you are stopping in for pickup and the person who waited on me was extremely quick to help me and offered plates, utensils and napkins, which I would have forgotten if the offer wasn't made. Finally on my own in the area and dining alone. Or more like ordering and taking back to my hotel room. I had wanted to try this place for a while and was always discouraged to do so. Mostly by people saying that it's a chain and you can find better elsewhere. I don't discount that, but I had never tried Grotto before, anywhere. With those naysayers gone I went ahead and tried it out. Earlier in the week, and this is prefacing a bit, when I was out with friends we had seen an older gentleman come out of a pizza shop opposite of here. We asked his honest opinion about the pizza in the area and I think he summed it up quite well. If you want to watch a game, Grotto's is the place to be, but if you want to enjoy the food, go elsewhere. I can confirm this. I was in the area for a week and any time there was a football or baseball game on, this place was packed. They had the garage doors open and people were crammed in here all the way out to the patio. But when there wasn't a game on, this place was void of people. That's exactly how it was when I stopped in here. I, however, did not dine in house, instead, I ordered ahead of time online and gave myself some time to make my way here from my hotel. I didn't want to be the one of few in here. I ordered a few things from here because I figured I would eat throughout the day, giving myself food to spread out. And don't come for me for what I ordered for one of the meals, sometimes you just want what you want. The one meal I ordered was the Quarter Pound Angus Burger. You get to select how you want it cooked, your side (fries or veggies), and toppings (some having and extra charge). I went through the motions and picked my toppings. Simple, lettuce, onion pickle, mayo...and then I saw this option "add sauce." Not knowing what this meant, I thought it was for a burger sauce, like how they have for the Big Mac. So I clicked it. Don't do this, you will get a small cup of marinara sauce. You should probably specify what type of sauce. I went with fries as my side. The burger...was a bit bland...I know, shocking. A burger from a pizza place no having much flavor. Although, that could be me too with the toppings I chose. But nothing special, but I had been craving a burger for a minute. For my other meal, I did go with the Junior Pizza. Think of this as a personal pizza, nine inches of pizza just for you. I got mine with pepperoni and this was by far the best. The pepperoni was crispy and had that bit of melt in your mouth texture to it. For a whole day, I had food from here, which was not a bad thing. What was lacking here was the customer service. Since I had placed my order ahead, I came here at the time specified to pick it up and no one was at the counter. Multiple people walked by that worked here, but not a single one stopped to ask me what I was there for. Eventually the hostess did acknowledge me and asked if I wanted a table. Clearly no, since I was standing at the counter, all I wanted was someone to acknowledge I was there to pick up my order that was already paid for. After some time, someone did show up to the counter. Being offseason there aren't many orders during a weekday, and it seemed like it confused him as to which order might be mine. What a horrible experience, we sat and waited for 15 min before someone even acknowledged us to get drinks , then the kid who waited on us was miserable asked us "what u want?" So then he writes nothing down my pizza came out with no pepperoni I say the miserable kid supposed to have pepperoni on it he says yea it is ?!?! First time we ordered an extra cheese pizza and there was barely any sauce. Second time we ordered a medium extra cheese and asked for thinner crust. Got home and the size of the pizza was soo small. No beach vacation in Delaware is complete without pizza from Grotto's. This place hasn't changed much since my beach house days in the early 2000s. You can order your pizza online and choose a pick up time. Just be warned, during their peak hours they will close the online ordering/take-out service so they can accommodate their in-dining guests. They do have expanded outdoor seating now. My daughters loved their pizza so much they wanted it again the next day. Large cheese pizza is the way to go, but I also like their large pepperoni pizza. They use Fontina cheese instead of mozzarella, which gives it more taste. I recommend taking the pizza to go and eat it at the beach. read more

We just got in town today for vacation. We used to live here but it's been a few years. The food was good as we remembered but the service was just ok. We asked about the popcorn (we moved right before the pandemic) and were kind of rudely told it's been gone 2 years. Well, we haven't been here in two years so we wouldn't know, that was why we asked. The popcorn and balloons and gelato were the reasons Grotto was their favorite place to go. I guess it's 1/3 ... kind of. They don't keep the gelato soft anymore, frozen in the back so it's pretty hard. My daughter still woofed it down, but you could tell it wasn't the same. Our server forgot my wife's beer, and two condiments we asked for when ordering. I will say we enjoyed the music. And the atmosphere was beachy which was fun. There was one younger man in a red tshirt and he seemed to be hustling all over the place. Maybe everyone else was off because it was a rainy day. Again, food was great all around. Kids loved the mac n cheese, chicken and fries. Lemonade and apple juice were hits too. Enjoy! read more

Don't you love when you make plans for a weekend beach trip, and you lay out the day's activities precisely, but then you end up day drinking and those plans go down the tubes? The restaurant was chosen after sifting meticulously through dozens of reviews days before. But we weren't going to make it. Not in the condition we were in. Not this late. The day was quickly turning into night and my friends and I needed pizza in a pinch. And against ALL odds, Grotto Pizza delivered. It was definitely better than I'd thought it'd be. Yes, I admit I'm a little biased against pizza chains with 24 locations across three states, but this particular pizza was gooey and cheesy and hot and yummy. That checks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned. The waitress was not attentive. We ordered 2 pizzas, first one came out and second one 20 minutes later. We ordered 2 chicken cheesesteaks, the first one came out and then the waitress asked my brother what he wanted on the second one. Everyone's meal came out one by one at least 5-8 minutes in between. I love grotto but in this certain location was dreadful. The service was atrocious, it felt like jumping in a pit of fire and one hour and thirty minutes later they hand pizza to a skeleton. I think this is one of those places that relies on nostalgia and tradition to flourish. Everyone who went to the Delaware beaches growing up has great, fond memories of Grotto's. 2 years ago in July 2018 I was on vacation with my parents in Dewey Beach. It was my first time in Dewey Beach so naturally I had no idea what Grottos Pizza was (I've only ever been to Jersey breaches and Ocean City Maryland before). The very first day we got there we needed somewhere to eat for dinner and there was a Grottos across the street at the end of our block that The Surf Club Hotel was on. So we walked up and we were surprised that 4PM on a Monday in July wasn't too bad of a wait. It was a nice, warm and sunny night, the beer was refreshing, the service was great and of course the pizza was AMAZING. It was a great way to start the vacation and I definitely need to go back when I am in Dewey Beach again!! read more

Not really sure about why these reviews are so meh. Maybe it's because I'm still holding on to my freshman year of college ramen and pop tart taste buds? Or because every time I come to buy some pizza I'm always conveniently not sober? Sometimes I question whether I overhype this place........but then I order a pizza and instantly regret my previous thoughts. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. To be honest, I think my stomach hurts the next morning not because of the four Dewey Devils I drank the night before but because I forced myself to eat an entire pepperoni pizza because it was too good not to. Sure, it can use some updates. But seriously, when you're a few years fresh from undergrad/grad school a little grime is more homely than anything.
