I finally went in for a 90-min deep tissue hot stone massage after walking by Greenhouse Holistic for 2-years. I am so grateful I finally booked this because it was truly THE BEST massage I have ever had. The ambiance was relaxing and clean. David has a massage superpower, as cliche as that sounds. I hold most of my tension in my neck and shoulders, but I didn't even realize just how tense I was until the massage. The visible changes were immediate in the reduced size of my traps when I walked out, and I felt like a new person. This massage experience truly unlocked years of tension both mentally and physically and was the mind-body reset I needed. I have continued to feel the shift in my body and mood in the month since my first appointment. My boyfriend even noticed the change in my demeanour and said I should make it a monthly routine. I have been in search of a new bodywork place since I moved back to New York. Devante at Greenhouse is incredible, and I've never felt better! He is knowledgeable, intuitive, precise and strong. Beyond the normal routine, he listens and really finds and destroys all the knots. He's also given me great stretching suggestions. Booked a massage here from a groupon--and as per the typical expectations for Groupon deals, I had low to mediocre expectations. I was just looking for a quick fix for the kinks in my shoulder, but boy did I get more than that. The room and studio itself were very plain and no frills. The masseuse--wish I could remember her name--was very kind and asked me about my problem areas. Then she got to work. I've had countless massages--both at budget and expensive spas, and I have developed an expectation that the massage itself will be very painful but will be worth it the next day. Sometimes it is worth it, and sometimes it isn't. HOWEVER--this is the first massage that I did not feel tremendous pain during, but still woke up the next day feeling the best I've ever felt post-massage. Not only that, but the masseuse asked me questions during the massage about my daily rituals and provided insight on what potentially could be causing my chronic shoulder pain. Although disclaiming that she wasn't a doctor, the insight that she provided was invaluable and made a lot of sense to me. Even though I'm not a yogi or a holistic-crazed believer, I do believe that this is one of the best massages I've had. Upon checking the non-groupon price for a massage (since I was very interested in returning), I was shocked at how expensive these massages actually were. It has been five years since my first and only visit to a spa for a one hour massage. I was clearly OVERDUE for a massage, because I never followed through with pampering myself once a quarter. Thankfully, I was gifted a Groupon deal (one 60-minute Swedish or deep tissue massage) and it came in handy to address my aches and pains. Since I prefer female masseuse, I was limited to booking on a Friday or Saturday. Luckily, I was able to book an appointment within a week. Surena Simpson is the only female masseuse on staff and she was ah-mazing. I was pleasantly surprised that Greenhouse Holistic Spa is black-owned and has been in existence for nearly 20 years. Plus, it's just a few minutes away from home on the L train and 1-minute walking distance from the Bedford Avenue stop. FYI, mass transit is your best option due to the ongoing construction and limited parking. The space was quaint, quiet, with dim lighting and soothing music to create a calm environment. I loved the intimacy of the spa. No need to carry baggage or travel from a locker room like larger spas. I was able to change in the massage room, tuck my clothes and personal belongings in a corner, then get comfortable. Prior to our session, Surena asked about any problem areas and my preferred type of massage. I chose deep tissue, because I knew that I had built up years of stress and tension that needed to be released. Surena was so friendly, we had great conversation, and I walked away feeling relaxed and more flexible. I think I have found my new home for quarterly pampering sessions. Thank you Surena! **THIS REVIEW IS FOR YOGA CLASS** I originally just walked into the Driggs Ave location enquiring about classes and I was given a FREE pass to come back and try the yoga class, so naturally I obliged. Who turns down a free yoga class? Not me fo' sure... The Driggs Ave studio is way bigger and so when I arrived to the Roebling St studio, I was a bit disappointed. I mean, the place was the size of a shoe box. Hey, listen, I am used to shoeboxes...but man oh man. The front desk clerk was nice and checked me in quickly with my FREE pass. He did say I was pretty early (yes, I arrived 35 min earlier), but it wasn't too awkward. He offered me some water, which was nice. Yoga mats are $1 for rental, and you wipe them down when you are done and hang it up to dry. I found the INTERMEDIATE VINYASA class appropriate for my level. Now, granted there were some poses in which I was confused, but it is only because I haven't been practising those poses too much. I did enjoy the instructor and she was clear and good at instructions. The studio itself is a good size and there was only 6 students total, so lots of space to move around. This studio also has mirrors (which is rare), but the instructor didn't lift the veil to allow us to look at ourselves and our alignment. She also brought her baby into to class, which was a nice addition and the baby not once cried, how awesome is that? There is also a small changing area, bathroom, shower and a sauna. But prepared for very cramped quarters, but I'm not complaining, I am used to tight spaces. After all, I've been in NY for 10 years now. Not sure I would visit again, but did enjoy the class and definitely I got a good workout! And all for FREE, so thanks GH! read more

I give this place one star because it was completely creepy. I wish I had a great experience like other patrons but I was completely weirded out. I purchased a Groupon here for a massage and when I arrived there was only ONE person at the spa. A male. And no one else present. As a female, I'm sorry, no male is massaging me in a small secluded "spa" by myself. Not even a secretary was present. I made up an excuse and left. Maybe the massage would've been fine? Who knows? But Id rather be than sorry Maybe this place should stick to yoga only. But I definitely wouldn't return here. Ever. Or recommend it. This place needs a lesson in professionalism. I came here for a massage with David. It was fairly easy to make an appointment but they had limited availability even for a few weeks out. A few days before the appointment, they had to reschedule the appointment but, they noted they were flexible. David was very businesslike and no-nonsense. The massage was good and he focused on my problem areas. My only qualm is that David left a few times during the massage and it started late (even though, I was there early). "New age...sans hipsters" I've been yoga-ing around this city for a year and a half. You've probably seen me -- I'm the tall guy in the front (because I arrived late) who is as flexible as a wooden board. My friend Julie F, suggested this place on our next yoga adventure, and since it was her turn to pick, I went to the BK. I live in the West Village and actually this is very quick to reach, thanks to the "L". Of course this is more of a complete mind and body rejuvenation center than a pure yoga place. And it feels that way. But the environment is very comfortable and welcoming. A maybe too New Age-y. I liked this place. But didn't love it. First, since the focus is toward spa rather than yoga, I didn't feel the clientele, staff or teacher were in the right state of mind. Second, the workout itself was too casual, I didn't even break a sweat. I don't want a drill sergeant, but cavalier would be a step up on rigor here. On the plus side, the introductory offer of $25 for three classes is a steal. If you want very relaxed yoga, this could be your place. read more

I have taken yoga classes here and they were always wonderful. The availability of the sauna for before/after class is a real perk. But I just got my first massage here by David Greenhouse, the owner. The space is calming and clean and David is a truly gifted bodyworker. I have been getting massage and bodywork of various kinds regularly for the last 20 years. This is literally the best work I have received in years. He listens to your body and tailors everything to what it tells him. He gives you suggestions for helping with any issues he might discover. First, this is a beautiful place, and the building where the Deep Tissue Massage was performed smelled & looked great. Unfortunately that's the best thing I can say. - they double-booked themselves so when I arrived I was told they didn't have my number to call me (they Did take my number & email address when I made the appointment) but didn't bother to get in touch with me. Thus I waited 45mins before my massage began - the receptionist was nice but she was Really giving me the hard sell with the yoga classes, the spa, etc, etc, etc. I mean I know it's her job but know when to quit. - it was nice that they offered free sauna use with the massage purchase but I ended up not using it because: A) the sauna & reception are in a different building down the street so I would have had to go back to the first building & undress again & get dressed again - would of been nice if, like at other spas, the whole thing was in one building so one could slip on a robe & head to the sauna B) even if I had time to go & undress & redress, I didn't want to go back to that building b/c I would have had to hear the hard sell for classes, etc for a 3rd or 4th time C) after waiting 45mins extra I needed to get going because it was dinner time The incense smell of reception was a bit much, tone it down a bit. The massage: I had David the owner and for all the nice apologizing that the receptionist did about my wait time, he didn't apologize at all. On the contrary he was running around and was almost rude in getting me in & sitting me down while he said goodbye to his previous client. I mean, it's not my fault your staff over-booked. He didn't ask me if I had ever had a deep tissue massage before and I wish he would have given me a little information about the process, because when he started it was Very painful. I know it's supposed to be somewhat painful but I'm more sensitive than the average client, however, when early on I asked that he go lighter - he did for about a minute, then the rest of the massage was painful torture. Never once did he ask me if it was too light or too hard, nor did he acknowledge that I had asked to go lighter. Also, I specifically asked for upper body & he pounded me everywhere else Except my neck. He even rubbed my eyebrow - which has never happened to me in a previous massage - I wished he would have skipped the eyebrows & massaged my neck. And then when I left he gave me a nasty look when I handed him an envelope with a tip inside (%20, kind wish I would have tipped half that) and then hurried me out the door. We liked it so much that earlier this year when they were selling the 2-for-1 massages, my girlfriend bought us a bunch. Fast forward to now - nobody picks up the phone to schedule an appointment, and it seems most of their locations closed down. We are running out of time to redeem out purchases, and can't get a hold of anyone there because no one answers phones. You might think that in the aftermath of the worst natural disaster to hit the city where people lost power and much worse, this place could be more forgiving with their cancellation and rescheduling policy. In a week where I was volunteering and hosting hurricane evacuees, my massage appointment slipped my mind - crazy I know. When I asked if I could reschedule, the woman on the phone said it wouldn't be possible to reschedule today or "any time in future." They require a 24 hour cancellation policy. There goes the money I spent on the Groupon. (They even had the nerve to email me a receipt for a service they didn't provide!) I can only imagine how they treated people who lost power. There's no indication of pulling together for the common good from this place. I was pretty disgusted at the lack of understanding. Why do I continue to attend Greenhouse Holistic's Beginner Class when you said months ago that I was ready to move up to Basic? It's all because of you, and only you, John, my calm, patient prince. You're my foot massage/cup of Sleepytime/a wave machine/ hot tub all rolled into one. I hoof it a mile to your Sunday class, cursing the jerks, jackasses, and all the Zin from the night before. An hour and a half later, I emerge from your class, floating, believing that I might actually be capable of becoming not just a calmer person but a better citizen. After every class, I resolve to simply breathe the everyday obstacles and ayeholes away--while I bend this, twist there, grab that, turn here, and look up at the same time. I vow to slow down, in speech and thought, and savor each moment. I'll remember that every day is a gift, an opportunity to start fresh. Sure, Mr. Mad Monday will come and shake me out of bed a mere 17 hours later hours to remind me that I still hate alarm clocks, my stomping neighbor upstairs, nowheresville G trains, packed L trains, hipster girls in their hooker hand-me-down fur coats, and dog shit on the sidewalk. I do not recommend the 6:30 open class at Roebling with Paul Manza. I absolutely love Greenhouse Holistic and have been doing yoga here for 5 years. Sadly, I would give it five stars if it weren't for him. Hopefully someone who is in charge of firing/hiring will take notice because I have seen other reviewers with similar feelings about this teacher. He leads his class with no rhythm or flow with a condescending attitude and tone. One woman actually put her props away and walked out mid-class. Here are some actual quotes from tonight's class: (After spending 10 minutes talking about proper sitting and getting frustrated). "Some of you still aren't sitting right, in which case everything I'm about to say is a waste of your time and arguably a waste of mine." (He kept getting right and left mixed up and people were getting confused). "If this class is confusing, hopefully you can find classes that are less and less confusing to you." It seemed like he was lost and hadn't planned anything to do. Never led one vinyasa. We spent most of our time trying different variations of triangle and pigeon. Some of the adjustments he made were nice. Perhaps he is better suited for one on one teaching with the right client. He is not suited for leading a whole class. read more

They used to have a full schedule of classes but there was some strange situation going on between management and the teachers (received an email from one of the old teachers about how management was treating them poorly). Now they only have a couple classes, all of which don't align with my schedule. I had purchased a pack of 24 classes and now can't use them because of their limited schedule. Reached out to management to get a refund but they never replied. Stay away from this place as clearly something is going on and management is not interested in making it right for their customers. read more

I got my first-ever hot stone massage, a 90-minute one, on my first visit to Greenhouse Holistic recently, and was so impressed with the service. I arrived carrying two bags, which is fewer than I normally carry, but was told gently but firmly that by carrying them afterward, I'd be undoing the good work of the massage. My massage therapist drove me the few blocks back to my place, then back and talked to me about the bag situation for a little while before starting the massage (this time was not included as part of the massage). She used hot stones and cold stones and really dug into the sore parts of my back, shoulders, neck and legs, telling me which spots felt tight as well as what to expect the next day. There was a moment or two when I wasn't sure I could take the heat, and was about to ask her to take the stones away, but I kept them there and am so glad I did. The heat was intense, and the cold stones were powerful too. I walked out feeling extremely energetic, and would have walked across the Williamsburg Bridge if it hadn't been cold out since the sun was down. I was extremely pleased with the professionalism and high-quality service (I got a follow-up phone call three days later) and will definitely be back. read more

Within the past year, I have learned that I hate gyms. I hate elipticals. I hate aerobics. I hate weights. It seems unnatural to be using artificial machines to lose weight/gain muscle (to me). "Why not use your own body and work from your core?" I told myself. That being said, I did a search and found that the most cost effective and efficient way to get into a nice studio was this place. I love it! I decided studios are the ways to go, not gyms. Emphasis is on mind along with body, not physique. There is a $25 intro that allows you 3 classes in 3 weeks - so you can go and try it out. You will probably get hooked as I have. After that they have numerous package options which can suit all. I have yet to check out the Roebling location, I've only been to Driggs.. but I am sure it is just as nice. Oh and just read this review, don't actually go...I don't want my class crowded.. hehe. read more

I mentioned a knot I've had in my shoulder for years that even physical therapy couldn't get rid of, just to let her know it was there, but not to worry, I've accepted that it has become part of me....I am one with the knot. She killed it. Its not 100% gone, but I'd say pretty close to it. Anyone else that ever attempted it put me in excruciating pain. After reading all the great reviews and having a personal recommendation from a friend, I booked a 90 deep tissue massage with Chris. Even after requesting twice that he address the chronic pain in my upper back in between my shoulder blades, he did not attempt to get out a single knot! Overall it was a pretty average massage, I've had much better at less expensive places. But the kicker is this: the staff whom I complained to were so nice and told me to call back to the Office on Monday and tell them about my experience. When I called, the man on the other line (which I later found out was David, the owner!) said "we've never had any complaints about Chris, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt as the customer is almost always right so we will give you a complimentary massage". Way to be condescending! I was going to take the complimentary because I had heard amazing things about David - but then I found out it was in fact David on the phone who was so rude. I WILL not be coming back - not even for a free massage! I just want Greenhouse to know - I'm not the kind to complain, usually I just walk away and don't come back. This review is for massage only. I had a Living Social deal for a massage with this place, and scheduling, etc, was extremely easy. The setup of the studio+reception desk being separated was confusing for me, however. It took a while for me to find the right place for the massage itself. Maybe I'm just slow. Anyway, the space itself (once I found it) was really great- quiet and clean with hardwood floors and zen-like decorations and tinkly music. I was lucky enough to get David Greenhouse himself, and he was really great. This was my first time with a male masseuse, but he put me at ease quickly. The massage itself mainly consisted of deep tissue with a little hot stone thrown in towards the end, which was great and very relaxing. I usually get Tui Na massages and am used to a feeling of soreness after the massage, but none of that here- he kept the pressure on the light side for a deep tissue. I almost fell asleep, seriously. I really appreciated the feedback he gave me after the massage about the problem areas that I mostly already knew about (shocker, marathon training makes for tight calves), and he made sure that I knew to drink enough water, etc. The prices here are pretty reasonable even without the deals ($80 for an hour the last time I checked), so I will most likely be back when I feel like treating myself to a more spa-like experience than my slightly sketchy Tui Na massages. read more

First off, I'd like to start this review by saying that I rarely take the time to leave reviews (I usually find that the majority of people who leave reviews are either disgruntled, irritable customers that will never be satisfied or are people who simply love to hear themselves talk). This was my first massage experience since I moved to Brooklyn back in June. I also used a Living Social deal because I am fairly new to the area and haven't established "my spots" here yet. I'm used to Living Social & Groupon customers taking a backseat to those who are paying full price, but I did not feel that way at all. They were accommodating to my 9-6 schedule and were able to get me in last minute at 7:30pm on a Friday night. The massage was phe-nom-enal. It was an amazing end to a very average and almost intolerable work week. Rachel (I believe that was her name - sorry!) was great. The voucher was for a 60-minute deep tissue massage but I was not expecting a brief hot stone treatment AND an unusual (yet strangely enjoyable) face massage. Not just a scalp massage -- a full FACE massage. I will definitely be back. And I have already recommended this spot to friends in the area. I have yet to cash in on the free yoga portion of the voucher but my expectations are pretty high at this point and I'm sure I won't be disappointed. read more

Gee. Not that many reviews for the Yoga at Greenhouse holistic. Having recently decamped from Go Yoga, i am *so* happy to find the Greenhouse community. Things i really like: 1. Financially accessible if you are committed to your practice. Pricing: 90/month unlimited if you commit to 3 months, $80/month if you commit to a year. They also have a work/study Karma program and you get unlimited yoga for free in exchange for a 3hr/week commitment. There are also $5 (!) evening vinyasa classes offered during the week at the Grand Street Studio, and many $10 community classes sprinkled throughout the day. The result: a diverse group of committed yogis, who are generally considerate of each other. A nice community. You will make friends. The incentive is to take classes. 2. Lots of different types of classes. So there's all types of yoga. Its vinyasa heavy, but there's also Iyengar and classic Hatha. I'd say there's a slight Ashtanga/Anusara bent, but there's plenty of options. For a challenging class, i really like Melissa and Juliane. Luke's classes are friendly and exuberant. Dana has a beautiful voice if you like singing in class. Also Pilates (Brynne is my Fave, but Erin is also great). There are three locations, you'll probably find something that you are interested during the time that you are free. There's a sauna at the Roebling place, though i haven't used it. There is mat storage for members at the Driggs studio. 3. Injury compassionate. They are hands on though. If you don't like assists, tell the instructor before class. All these great things add up to a busy studio. I've never been to a class with less than 15 people, even way early or late, or during business hours. Weekends are super crowded. Get there early, don't expect a lot of space and be nice to the person at the desk (who is probably a work/study-er and isn't being paid to interface with your cranky saturday morning self) - when you show up 5 minutes late and the class is full. Seriously, the only negative thing i have to say about this place is that i've seen students be mean to the desk people -- but that's only prolly because they really want their greenhouse fix. Relax people, there's another class in a few minutes up (or down) the street. read more

Knowing Greeenhouse Holistic was in the neighborhood, I made called them up and scheduled an appointment for a Deep Tissue massage. What's great about Yelp is instead of going through the roulette wheel of massage therapists when you schedule, you can get some solid names to ask for based on recommendations. I wasn't so wise when I initially scheduled, but I got lucky when the receptionist paired me with Anne Zager. A good massage therapist should ask you where your trouble spots are so they can give them some focus and cure what ails you. I told Anne where I was feeling the most pain,, which set up for a quality session that left me feeling amazing, and even a little smarter about some of the trouble spots on my body. While she worked out all of the troubled spots, the overall experience was a relaxing one and GH sets up a great environment to be as relaxed as possible. I can't recommend this place enough. Anne Zager is now my go-to therapists, but as other reviews can attest, Greenhouse Holistic has a great roster of massage therapists to choose from.
