I am very, very irked by Brooklyn Banya. We traveled approximately two hours to get to BK Banya…read morebecause it's one of the few places that allow those under 18 into the baths. We called ahead and spoke with a gentleman who assured us (1) they were open on Yom Kippur; and (2) they were happy to accommodate my children and friends of mixed genders. When we arrived, the extremely unpleasant older woman at the front desk told us that Thursdays were for men only and turned us away very, very rudely -- despite the fact that the website says that men's only hours begin at 6 p.m.!! We were there around noon.) From the website (https://www.brooklynbanya.com/m): Men only hours: Tuesday 11am-11pm $60pp Thursday 6pm- 1am $60pp From what we could see and smell from the lobby, the place was dark, threadbare, and dingy, with a funky odor of mold mixed with perspiration and other unpleasant, unidentifiable things on top. So perhaps it was a cloud with a silver lining to be turned away. TLDR: - Awful communication. Info posted online is not honored or accurate. Info given verbally is not honored or accurate. - The space -- what we saw of it -- seemed dingy and dirty. - Staff are uninformed and extremely rude.

I've been with a few of the waxers and only had positive experiences - but Maya is my #1. I highly recommend you make an appointment with her, particularly for brazilians. She is truly an expert in her field and is very knowledgeable about different techniques for different hair types. She makes sure that you feel comfortable throughout the appointment, informs you about what she is doing and why, and provides encouragement in the tougher sections. I will say it's definitely not cheap here, and if that's what you're looking for you might as well do EWC. The quality of the products they use, the expertise of their waxers, and the experience within the salon makes it totally worth it. From being offered water when you check in to the beautiful rooms they have to people like Maya, I don't think you could go wrong here.

I wanted to get one while I was in SF but that didn't pan out for many reasons which I was disappointed by. So I was very happy that I had such an amazing experience here. I was able to easily book online, a same day appointment. I showed up early and they were able to get started on me right away. Mai was so sweet! She took good care of me and I liked how she knows when to talk and when not to talk. I've definitely had facials where the aestheticians were super chatty and I'm over here like bruh i'm tryna relax yknow? I got a custom facial but felt like so much was done on me. I've never had that many steps before. But i left the salon feeling like baby skin. And day after, my skin looked so clear, smooth and even toned. I feel like she honestly shaved years off of my face lol Pro tip: New clients get 20% off

The spa was super clean and service was great. At checking when I explained I was a first timer they took extra time to explain everything and I never felt rushed. I'd recommend this for sure and will be back next time I'm in nyc. Only item I'd say was a bit of a challenge was that it got so crowded it was hard to find a seat in the saunas and steam rooms but this was a very minor imposition. People kept moving around so I didn't have to wait too long for a place.

The spa floor is on the third floor of the Howard Hotel, and upon entering--you're promptly greeted by the concierge and a super lush and cooling lobby. When you check in with the clerk in the hallway, (who was super nice btw), you have the option to sign some waivers, but I save some time by signing documents on my phone on the way. The whole floor is rather zen, except for the cleaners you can hear outside your room. You're welcomed in by refreshing scents, think Byredo or OUAI. We booked the 1 hour dose for two and were promptly ushered to our private room, which included the infared sauna centered and the adjacent bathroom to it, with high quality hair products (Redken Acidic Line), Peter Thomas Roth skincare products, and a tea tree body wash. Included was a hair dryer, some face masks, and some takeaways provided by some of the sponsors they're currently working with (eye masks, etc). Staff started the timer for an hour and we were left to our own devices in the dim, soothingingly calm lighted room. You are able to play your own music if you connect to the speakers but I thought it was fun to just vibe out to their own chill techno zen-yourself-out music. I loved how the sauna experience came with some cool wet towels and face wipes, as well as a ice cool water canister in the corner to refill as you please. The sauna itself was exceptionally clean and well kept. Since I don't experience this often, I found it most tolerable when I took frequent breaks outside by walking around or just refreshing myself with the towels provided. I was piqued when the staff notified us afterwards that there's a 15% discount when you book your next spa day with them right after your appointment, and that deal can be started anytime you come in. I felt refreshed for the rest of the day, despite being in this heatwave and perusing around LES/Chinatown afterwards (which is usually rather overstimulating and sweat inducing). I'll def be back--the time passes rather slowly, and it felt like one of those little luxuries that set the pace for the rest of the day. Exceptional experience with friendly staff, upscale facility, and affordable cost.

This was my first time trying a 'salt room'. I went in with an open mind, and over the years have…read moretried a number of alternative therapies. On this one, I can't say I'm convinced it does anything. Sure, the overall space is nice and 'zen'. The salt room itself, very 'pretty' with all the various white/ivory/peach/pink/coral/orange shades of the salt walls. The feeling of salt crystals under your bare feet? Nice. Relaxing chairs to sit in. But at the end of the 30 minute session, did I feel anything special beyond the fact that I just 'relaxed' in a pretty room for 30 minutes? No. Note that the salt room can also hold up to three clients at a time, which means they have the potential to charge up to $87 for three people, for just a 30-minute period. That's $174 per hour for a room that's filled with salt. Where no personal or hands-on service is provided...just clients 'sitting' in a room. I guess they also disperse 'saline aerosol' into the room while you are sitting in there. I'm not exactly sure what that is, or how it's supposed to be beneficial to you but then it begs the question...is it the saline aerosol that benefits you and/or some type of 'energy' that is supposed to come from the salt itself in the room? I don't know...I just have to wonder if this salt room thing is nothing more than an (unproved) trend that they are going to milk for all it's worth, until the next wellness trend comes along. When I first arrived and was eventually directed to the room, even though they knew it was my first time there, I was given no real direction or expectation...just told to go on in the room. (Typically you'd expect some type of introductory language...'we pipe saline aerosol into the room...this provides XYZ, etc'). I also found it odd that at the end of the 30-minute session, the woman working the desk simply came to the room and opened the door without warning. No knock, no 'bell' to let me know the session was over...just her, suddenly opening the door. (Typically at personal service places like that, they would knock on the door first, or ask if it's ok to enter, and especially considering I was in the room all alone, i.e., maybe I was in the middle of taking a weird selfie when she just opened the door?) Maybe next time I'll give the infrared sauna a try and see how that goes...but as for the salt room and just sitting in there, I don't think I'd spend my money on that again. It so happens that at the time, I was starting to feel quite sick with a bad cold. Other reviews here seemed to suggest they felt 'relief' from a cold. I felt no difference in anything, after my salt room session.

If they also had a salt water pool or turned one of their cold plunge pools into a salt water one, it would be perfect. The bartender on the roof was not friendly at all. They charge an additional 20% tip on anything you order automatically. So when you don't have to work for your tips, stuff like this can happen. But the rest of the staff were great. Also, the food even though overpriced was so delicious. I loved the cappuccino, sweet potato with chimichurri and hummus and the miso wings. The portions are small so plan on the food making you hungrier than before eating. There are no phones allowed in the bathhouse and it's a nice break but the roof does allow phones. The moment you step outside onto the roof, the first thing that catches your eye is the steam rising off the water. As people climb out of the pool, you can see the steam rolling off them as well. It is a genuinely impressive sight. The pool itself is quite large and we really enjoyed spending time up there. There is also a sauna on the rooftop level, though according to my wife it was not putting out much heat, which makes sense given how cold it was outside. The pool temperature is another story entirely. It is very warm and you feel completely comfortable while in the water despite the winter air surrounding you. Whenever I started feeling a slight chill, I would just dip my head under and instantly felt fine. It is a really unique experience and one of the cooler things we have done in a while. I skipped the ice plunge today. I just was not feeling up to it and spent most of my time relaxing in the regular pools instead. My wife made good use of the saunas and I checked them out briefly before stepping away, not wanting to overdo it and get dehydrated. She was in need of some solid rest and relaxation and Bathhouse delivered on that front. It was a great Saturday. We rode the train home well past midnight but left feeling like it was absolutely worth it.
