The food was really good, how we the pasta salad is different since it is Greek and is a bit tangy. The turkey avocado sandwich was really good you could taste the herb mayo was really good on it. He said most people choose number seven the turkey avocado, but he had others that he recommended. I like that honesty and personal touch. The service was astonishingly fast. There are many places to sit including a picnic area with a roof and 5-7 picnic tables out in the sun. The views, the food, the friendly speedy service - all amazing and I can see why people flock here. I have to agree with what many people say onYelp: the highlight of my sub was the bread. I was super hungry after touring the Maritime Museum and this was the first place we stumbled across on our walk. The menu looked tasty so we went for it! But it was way tastier than what you'd get at Subway! =P The chip options are all kettle cooked and nice and crunchy. The sandwiches are a weird kind of semi-open-face and are therefore incredibly messy... This is further exacerbated by the use of shredded cheese rather than sliced. I love grinders! This place is in a unique location which only adds to the goodness of their grinders. They are about 16 options of grinders, all posted on the board at the restaurant. You place your order, they give you a number and then wait until they call you. I chose the Italian grinder as it's always my favorite. It was big enough to share with my husband and they cut it 1/3 and 2/3, so it was perfect. It came with a side and a drink, so we got the pasta salad. Our food came quickly and we were able to eat under the pavilion next door. The sandwich was messy to eat, and all the insides kept tumbling out, but it was good. The side was a little tiny styrofoam container of pasta and olives. Good sandwiches and fast service. I tried the Italian Grinder for lunch today, and boy oh boy was it delicious! My mom got the Turkey Grinder and loved it as well. They have a great website for easy online ordering to bypass having to wait. We took the sandwiches home, but they have a lot of outdoor seating available. We also got sides of potato and pasta salad. The potato salad was incredible, I wasn't a huge fan of the dressing on the pasta salad but my mom really enjoyed it. Of the many choices I went with the West Coast Turkey as it just screams home for me and you bet it fit to the T as it had plenty of turkey avocado jalapeños sprouts as well as this dressing that really pulled it all together but the real kicker was the bread as it was just delicious in soo many ways and you bet I'll be back to get that or another delicious version again! With my sandwich combo you can get two sides or you can get one side and a drink as a drink here counts as a side of the sides I went with the macaroni salad and the potato salad both were yummy and full of flavor especially the macaroni salad as it just hit the spot with that sandwich goodness all around! The parking here is super close the amount of benches they have here is enough to hold a small army and the size of the sandwich is definitely worth the price as it's packed full of everything you could want as well as a pickle spear on the side! My husband is from Sandusky and we just moved back here last October 2020 and he has been bugging me to go here since the weather turned warm - you see, he has to "bug" me because I'm not into sandwiches, subs, hoagies, grinders, etc. It's my least favorite kind of Americana. But our experience and food at Grinders today has me singing a different tune! We ordered the Italian and OH MY GOODNESS it was delicious!! The flavor of each ingredient comes through in the first bite: 1) Rather than stuffing grinder with layers of sub-par lunch meat to give the appearance of "quantity," because it's simply not necessary at Grinders, their meats are high quality and a far cry from what you typically see at sub shops. 2) The bread...oh the bread... It's crusty on the outside, and pillowy soft on the inside, and it is delightfully perfect. 3) The homemade dressing ("The GLG Dressing"): it's light and herby (similar to an Italian dressing, but definitely not Italian dressing) and I think it really sets off the entire grinder! (Along with the banana peppers, which I normally don't love.) 4) Topped with cold grated cheese? What? This revelation threw us for a loop, but lo and behold, it was soft and flavorful, and it changed our minds about cold cheese! Note that there was an order of 8 grinders directly ahead of us and we *still* received our food in under 8 minutes. Personally delivered by Ron. (See below. ) And the icing on the cake was that we were lucky enough to meet and chat with the friendly and gracious owner, Ron. And it should be no surprise by now that his team is awesome! Hidden Gem!! If you are in Sandusky or visiting Cedar Point, you gotta take a short car ride over to the hidden gem of Great Lakes Grinders. We happened upon this place while driving around Sandusky to look at the lake. You can see it from the road. It sits in a little park and has a pavilion and picnic tables to dine outside while looking at the lake. This is a counter service little shack. It is owned and operated by a couple with another worker helping them. It is a true labor of love. We spent some time chatting with the owner as we are from the east coast and were delighted to see a grinder place. They have veggie and vegan choices as well as the standard animal based grinders. They have good local chips and make fresh chocolate cookies on site so when you get them they are hot and melty. Can't say whether the cookies are just your standard already prepped refrigerated dough that they bake, but whatever the case, they are delish!! We took a chance on this place the first day we saw it, but we liked it so much we ate here again later in the week. The grinders have a lot of flavor and are nice and fresh. The biggest draw of Great Lake Grinders are the owners. They are super friendly and engaging. And the good lunch makes the side trip away from Cedar point well worth it! Plus you wont be paying the exorbitant Cedar Point lunch prices if you come here! Very reasonably priced for what you are getting for a vacation lunch. The locals like it too. The clientele seemed to be a mix of locals and visitors. The Grinders are made to order so you can substitute or add if you want to. My husband was working a show in Norwalk, so I decided to head down to Great Lakes Grinders to grab us some lunch. The location is beautiful, right on the lake. Parking is also plentiful, and free. It would have been a great place to eat as there are several picnic benches available, but I was taking it to go, so I didn't get to experience that. The service was also amazing. I believe this is a small family owned business, they took the time to explain everything to me, chit chat while I was waiting for the food, and thank me for choosing them. I decided on the 2 Heavy Italian sandwich combos which came with the sandwich, chips and a soda for $11.00 each. The sandwich was made up of ham, salami, capicola, pepperoni, lettuce, tomato, shredded provolone, pepperoncinis, seasonings and their special GLG sauce (like a creamy Italian dressing). Let me tell you, these sandwiches were huge, filling and absolutely delicious. This has to be the best sandwich I ever had. I wish they had one in California, I would literally be there everyday.
