This is a small place with about ten tables and six picnic tables. The Huckleberry Elk burger was absolutely delicious and resulted in us coming back on the way home from the park (despite the very hefty $26 price) and the special jalapeño bacon with cheese was tasty. Layla took our order at the counter and answered our questions about whether bison or elk would be a good choice for our burgers. She was very warm and friendly as was the other waitress who delivered our meals to our table outside. I got the huckleberry buffalo burger. My husband got the bacon jam elk burger (because you can switch out beef for bison or elk). My side was the broccoli salad, and my husband got a cup of chili. The broccoli salad was made with slivered almonds, cherries, red onion, and bacon. It was delicious. My husband's chili was chock full of a variety of beans and meats. It's probably one of the best chilies we've had. The burgers were so delicious. I was skeptical about (sweet) huckleberry jam on a burger but WOW was it delicious. If you find yourself outside Glacier National Park, include a lunch stop at Great Bear Cafe since they aren't open for dinner. The food and service are fantastic! read more

Nestled in the small town of Hungry Horse, just outside Glacier National Park, Great Bear Cafe is known for their elm and bison burgers served up in a casual environment. We stopped by here for a burger lunch. I ordered their build your own elk burger with sauteed onions and mushrooms and cheese with their broccoli salad as my side. The burger was juicy and flavorful and the broccoli salad was crisp and fresh. Everything tasted cozy and home made. The dining room is simple but comfortable. They have a few outdoor tables as well. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. We were visiting for 4 full days... we came here 4 times. Everything was phenomenal, but the real star of the show was the breakfast sandwiches. The biscuits are unmatched, bacon was thick and tasty, egg cooked to perfection. Not being dramatic, it's the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had!! Just what we needed after a good hike. It was filling, hot, fresh, and tasty. Service is a bit slow even though there wasn't a lot of customers. I believe it's only one cook. So it does take time. My friends and I stopped in here on our way back to Kalispell and OMG IT WAS AMAZING! After a week of hiking and exploring this was much needed to conclude our trip. The staff is so accommodating and friendly. I got the waffle special, others in my group got the breakfast burrito and smothered biscuit. We almost missed it! When we drove up no one was there and the outside was not all that great. We looked across the street and saw a packed out cafe. So, we decided to go in. Wow is an understatement. Over the next 7 days we went back 3 times. Food was outstanding. Breakfast menu may seem small but the food is big! From home made burritos to homemade gravy. We were on our way to Washington from Michigan and the Great Bear Cafe was recommended by folks at the Moose Creek RV resort, where we stayed for a couple of days. Great home style cooking! We stopped by here looking for some elk burgers, not expecting we'd be given some outstanding food. It's a small, quaint, and cozy cafe. Before ordering we were told it would be about a 30 minute wait, however the food arrived a lot quicker. Expect a bit of wait when you come but keep in mind there is only one cook and I believe one server. The food is definitely worth the wait. I got the buffalo burger and my sister got the elk burger, which she claimed to be the best burger she has ever had. You can get an elk burger prepared with specific toppings such as their huckleberry elk burger or you can customize your own bison, elk, or hamburger. The condiments are stationed at the front of the cafe for your choosing. The burgers were amazing but the soup was phenomenal! One day we got the tomato bisque, the next day we got the loaded potato. It's a new soup everyday and it tastes wonderful homemade. Even better, there's no wait for a bowl of soup. The buffalo burger tasted great and with that you get to choose a side. I got the broccoli salad with it. The crunch of the broccoli was perfect with sauce thee as t wasn't overly creamy.
