    Byo elk burger

Nestled in the small town of Hungry Horse, just outside Glacier National Park, Great Bear Cafe is known for their elm and bison burgers served up in a casual environment. We stopped by here for a burger lunch. I ordered their build your own elk burger with sauteed onions and mushrooms and cheese with their broccoli salad as my side. The burger was juicy and flavorful and the broccoli salad was crisp and fresh. Everything tasted cozy and home made. The dining room is simple but comfortable. They have a few outdoor tables as well. The service is warm and welcoming. We loved our experience here! Get to it!

Great service, great food, great vibes. A perfect example of the all American breakfast dinning experience. 20/10

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. We were visiting for 4 full days... we came here 4 times. Everything was phenomenal, but the real star of the show was the breakfast sandwiches. The biscuits are unmatched, bacon was thick and tasty, egg cooked to perfection. Not being dramatic, it's the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had!! Elk burger was also super tasty, and the service was great. We had Sherri (might be mixing up spelling), who was so kind and also gave us recommendations for what to do on our trip. We would never come back to this area and not go here! Prioritize it!

Just what we needed after a good hike. It was filling, hot, fresh, and tasty. Service is a bit slow even though there wasn't a lot of customers. I believe it's only one cook. So it does take time. But the burger was not gamey at all and was tender. So perfectly made. The chili was hot, full of meat and beans. It was flavorful and Smokey too. Highly recommend!

Huckleberry Elk burger- no spinach; macaroni salad

Overall, we really enjoyed our visit. The burger was a bit pricey, but very delicious. The bacon was nice and THICK. Macaroni salad was not the standard recipe--it went quite heavy on the grated carrots. But I'm not picky, and still enjoyed it. The huckleberry dessert was essentially a cheesecake, which I loved. Staff were also very friendly and attentive. Five stars.

Absolutely amazing hole in the way spot we found! The service was great! Friendly people food was amazing! And the desserts were top tiered! We really wanted to come back for breakfast but didn't have time before our flight! One of the highlights from our trip!

    Best biscuits and gravy!

If you are staying in or driving through Hungry Horse, Montana, make sure and try the Great Bear Cafe. The biscuits and gravy are the best! It's a small local cafe that packs a lot of big flavor in their food. Plenty of outside seating and a friendly staff.

Little did we know, we had just discovered the sandwich promised land. The moment we walked in, Melody greeted us with such radiant kindness that I briefly checked to make sure she wasn't secretly an angel in disguise. She welcomed us not like customers, but like family......you know, if family actually liked you. For one reckless moment, I almost proposed marriage to her, but didn't wanna be that guy. Now, the food? Holy sandwich gods. The Reuben, the Gyro, the Italian, each one so good it made me question every life choice that led me to eating literally anywhere else. The salads? Shockingly delicious. And the hot sauce? The hot sauce deserves its own holy scripture. One drop and I was sweating, crying, and maybe seeing into alternate timelines. It burned, it healed, it baptized me. My tears weren't just from spice, they were tears of gratitude, of love, of a man reborn in sandwich fire. I heard they also host live music, though I didn't get to see it. And honestly, I'm relieved, because if the bands are even half as good as the sandwiches, my fragile heart wouldn't have survived the day. Leaving was the hardest part. In fact, I was ready to build a log cabin next door and devote my life to becoming Tex & Jerrys most loyal disciple. Unfortunately, I remembered I have a blind dog waiting at home, so priorities. But I'll be back. Oh, and did I mention Melody? Because she deserves her own standing ovation.

Chef Ante was doing a soft open and it was just the local's and him and Tina running the front of house. This cute little house turned into a homestyle restaurant is AMAZING. Now if you think I"m just exaggerating, read any of my other reviews or know I'm a snob. Or even better come check it out for your self. How welcoming they were it felt like going to a loved families house and sitting down together for a home made meal. Because that is what it was. Food, I mean, come on! The lamb chops seasoned and cooked to perfect, nice char on the outside with a lite pink on the inside. The Ragu on home made tagliatelle was so beautiful, not to rich like some other you night have had, but able to taste all the flavor in the dish. A special if you can get it they were trying out here was the Chewapchichi (Cevapi), a form of Kofta / Meatball made in Chef Anton's Croatian style. That is not the Meatball that is on the menu in a soft tomato sauce!!! Basically we started with the Shrimp Tostada app and the Clams & Chroizo and just decided to ask for the whole menu for the family. I could go on, but just come see for yourself and enjoy for sure.

We arrived shortly after six on a Monday evening, easily found parking and, while about half the tables were full, we were seated quickly. Our waiter was kind but seemed nervous, reading the specials from a note pad. We started with sourdough and an order of calamari (yes, I know there isn't fresh squid within a hundred miles, it's one of our "always order to see what's up" dishes). Bread came out quickly with olive oil, balsamic, and some minced garlic - quite nice. A few minutes later, calamari - lightly breaded, perfectly fried, and a bit bland. It felt like they'd perfectly executed their vision, but it could've used a bit more seasoning to my taste. No tarter or other sauce, but a half lemon and some pickled sweet peppers. I ordered the bison burger and my wife went with the walleye. My burger was medium rare, as ordered, but the bottom bun was soggy and everything was buried in the thinly sliced red onion. It was fine but sadly forgettable other than having to slurp slices of onion after each bite. My wife raved about her walleye though, basically describing it as elevated nostalgia. It took her back to days of fishing on the lake with her family as a girl, but perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. We finished with an espresso crème brûlée, which took about 20 minute after our meal to arrive. Apparently the chef was newer and accidentally put pistachios on the brûlée, as we got the last espresso and the next batch was pistachio flavored. We didn't mind, but it had the thickest crust I've ever seen on a brûlée - probably an eighth inch thick. It took two solid whacks to break through and was so thick it felt more like a burnt caramel. The crème itself was lovely but, as someone who prepared hundreds of brûlées in an earlier job and has eaten many since, it was sadly overshadowed by far too much sugar on top. It was an overall pleasant experience but honestly I owe much of that to the company of my wife. If we go back, the only thing we'd reorder is the sourdough to start. My wife loved her fish but still said she'd try something else next time.

Rarely do you find a spot that has great beer and great food, but Backslope does both But if you read my reviews, you know I like to steer you through the menu, at least what we tried. Foreman's Stout - full bodied, delicious. Ginger/Lemonade - refreshing, sooooo GOOD. House Fries - sliced as chips, but so good. Hummus - great consistency, but needed some citrus to finish it off. That…read moreconversation convinced me to make the trip to Columbia Falls to visit the brewery, and I'm glad I did. What I discovered wasn't just excellent craft beer--it was some of the most memorable brewery food I've ever had. Back Slope took ordinary menu items and turned them into something extraordinary. The pulled pork sandwich and fried chicken sandwich were simply exceptional. The chicken was hand-cut, brined in pickle juice, carefully breaded, and fried to a perfect golden crust. The sauce brought everything together perfectly. Those sandwiches weren't just good--they were the reason I looked forward to returning. Unfortunately, on my most recent visit I discovered that both signature sandwiches are gone. The pulled pork sandwich has been removed from the menu, and the fried chicken has been replaced with commercially prepared chicken. We ordered other menu items, and while they were perfectly acceptable, they lacked the creativity and quality that made Back Slope feel special. What was once an unforgettable dining experience has become, in my opinion, just another brewery with decent food. The service, however, remains excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, and greeted us with a genuine smile, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. I understand that restaurants evolve and sometimes difficult business decisions have to be made. Still, it's disappointing when the very dishes that set a place apart disappear. Back Slope still has good beer and great service, but the unique culinary experience that once made it worth going out of my way to visit no longer seems to be there. I sincerely hope they consider bringing those signature sandwiches back, because they were truly something special.
