We stopped by here for a burger lunch. I ordered their build your own elk burger with sauteed onions and mushrooms and cheese with their broccoli salad as my side. The burger was juicy and flavorful and the broccoli salad was crisp and fresh. Everything tasted cozy and home made. The dining room is simple but comfortable. They have a few outdoor tables as well. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. We were visiting for 4 full days... we came here 4 times. Everything was phenomenal, but the real star of the show was the breakfast sandwiches. The biscuits are unmatched, bacon was thick and tasty, egg cooked to perfection. Not being dramatic, it's the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had!! Just what we needed after a good hike. It was filling, hot, fresh, and tasty. Service is a bit slow even though there wasn't a lot of customers. I believe it's only one cook. So it does take time. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit. The burger was a bit pricey, but very delicious. The bacon was nice and THICK. Macaroni salad was not the standard recipe--it went quite heavy on the grated carrots. But I'm not picky, and still enjoyed it. The huckleberry dessert was essentially a cheesecake, which I loved. We were on our way to Washington from Michigan and the Great Bear Cafe was recommended by folks at the Moose Creek RV resort, where we stayed for a couple of days. Considering this is a very small establishment, the service was really great our server was extremely pleasant and engaging. Both my wife and I had the buffalo burger which was excellent. Great home style cooking! We stopped by here looking for some elk burgers, not expecting we'd be given some outstanding food. It's a small, quaint, and cozy cafe. Before ordering we were told it would be about a 30 minute wait, however the food arrived a lot quicker. Expect a bit of wait when you come but keep in mind there is only one cook and I believe one server. The food is definitely worth the wait. I got the buffalo burger and my sister got the elk burger, which she claimed to be the best burger she has ever had. You can get an elk burger prepared with specific toppings such as their huckleberry elk burger or you can customize your own bison, elk, or hamburger. The condiments are stationed at the front of the cafe for your choosing. The burgers were amazing but the soup was phenomenal! One day we got the tomato bisque, the next day we got the loaded potato. It's a new soup everyday and it tastes wonderful homemade. Even better, there's no wait for a bowl of soup. Some of the most flavorful food you can find in Western Montana. The breakfast burrito is so good, and the best I've ever had. The burger was juicy and super flavorful. My husband and daughter tried the cheeseburger soup and they loved it! My other daughters had hotdogs that were huge and delicious. My salad came with huckleberry vinaigrette and that was so yummy. I couldn't believe how much we enjoyed the food. The service was great. Welp, guess we are back on the hunt for a new boat day lunch spot. Went in and placed an order pretty similar to our past one with the exception of a second italian this time instead of the Thai sandwich. The women that took the order was very friendly and kind. After I paid and sat down the "chef" told the women that I could not sub roast beef on the kids sandwich. I stated that I did last time and paid extra and he proceeded to tell me no I hadn't and that it wasn't an option. Guess he knew my order history and my kids sandwich preference better then me? So I said to make that one turkey too I guess. My son ate it but wasn't thrilled. The owner walked out (recognized him from their newspaper article announcing opening that originally brought us in) and said to the kind woman "the roast beef cost to much, we don't sub it" but never said a word or acknowledged me standing there. I viewed my receipt later (attached photo) and saw that I was in fact charged for roast beef (and still got turkey), and also charged extra for turkey instead of ham! $1.50 extra to switch ham to turkey, which most kids prefer. So almost $8 for two pieces of white bread, two thin slices of turkey, and two slices of american cheese. Maybe tourists will pay that for their kids sandwiches but I'm not interested in spending my money where they don't value my business and tell me I didn't order something I did Thankfully the beautiful setting I get to enjoy lunch in never lets me down read more
