We spent this last weekend in Canmore for our anniversary. We arrived Friday night and left Sunday morning, eating out at 5 different venues in that time. Our big anniversary dinner at one of the high-end restaurants was a bit disappointing, and we ended up here at Graze for our final weekend meal - Sunday breakfast - before driving back to Calgary. O.M.G. Graze was far and away the best meal we had all weekend! From the second we sat down in the cozy, simple space, to our server greeting us warmly and promptly...just a wonderful experience. My wife had the spectacular berry french toast, and I tried the Shakshouka...an African poached egg dish I'd never heard of but that was so delicious. What toppped it off was that a gentleman (I assume the owner) in his sports coat and Converse runners went to each table in the course of our meal to thank each guest for coming to their place and ensuring everyone enjoyed their meal - a really sincere, heartfelt gesture that reiterated the pride and care that made for such a lovely experience for us. Came here on a Monday night for dinner and a beer. The beer selection was pretty good, with a rotating tap. We ordered the soups of the day and the butter chicken. The chicken was very good, but the soup was warm at best. I'm assuming they served up the soup then it waited until the butter chicken was ready. The only reason I didn't give these guys a five star rating is because the fish and chips were kinda disappointing to me. This place was a little meh for us. Not bad, but not fantastic. Had poutine, Bahn Mi elk burger, and salad with yam and avocado. The poutine was good enough, but a little unusual in that the cheese curds were fried into a patty and placed on top. Also could have used a few more fries for the amount of gravy. The salad was good (recommended by waitress) but again execution was a little a little off. The Bahn Mi burger was the biggest disappointment. Made us wonder if the chef even knows what a Bahn Mi is. After taking a bite we thought we might have been given the Greek burger instead and asked the waitress. She said no, it was right, and commented that it's really nothing like a Bahn Mi. I was kind of disappointed. Especially given the great reviews. The food was too greasy and it was rich but not a lot of flavour. I needed a lot of salt to enjoy it. Also the owner sneezed in his hands three times and then didn't clean them and grabbed the handle of the door to leave the restaurant he didn't wear a mask and hung out in the middle of the small restaurant the entire time. The chefs also didn't wear a mask but the waitress had to? Seems odd to not have your cooks wear masks when they're the ones making the food. read more

What an incredible meal. Our group of 7 was traveling to Canmore from NYC to celebrate a birthday. We called ahead and made a reservation to ensure that our large group could be accommodated, and boy, did the staff at Graze go above and beyond to ensure that our experience was exceptional! We arrived about 20 minutes early for our reservation, and were immediately shown to our table. The owner pulled me aside and said "I just got back from picking up your cake!" He had gone out of his way to ensure that we would have a special (and delicious) way to celebrate a birthday. This was so incredibly kind, generous, and unexpected for a group of New Yorkers! So much care and attention was taken to ensure that our group was happy and enjoying our meal. We loved our food, and had some amazing local beers. We also enjoyed watching a local winter sports competition on the large TVs- Curling! Speed Skating! So Canadian! We were treated like family at Graze, and the warmth and generosity offered to us made us feel at home in the restaurant and in Canmore. Definitely a highlight of our trip! This was a huge win from a Yelp search! We wandered in on a freezing cold Saturday night and were greeted by the owner. He was so warm and welcoming and took great joy in ribbing us about the Oilers poor season. The beer selection was local. We even got introduced to the owner of one of the breweries on tap by the owner, who happened to be dining there as well. The food selections were all unique and so inexpensive for what we got! The beef tacos were delish, with enoki shrooms and deep fried avocado. The burgers and stir fry my companions had were also excellent! Plus a quote from Ratatouille on the wall and on the receipt! We stumbled upon this restaurant in downtown Canmore just driving by due to the number of people sitting outside. When we walked in, the owner, Tony, was very hospitable and conversational- he even said he'd move a table outside for us if we wanted, even though all of the outdoor tables were full! We opted to eat inside though since we had been outside all day. The ambiance was spectacular with eclectic wall designs and accents that make you feel like you're in a modernized cabin in the mountains. I am gluten free, and I could eat about 75% of the menu, which is pretty impressive for such a large menu. The menu item I originally wanted was out of stock, so Tony gave me an extra taco with my order of the salmon tacos to make up for it! The salmon was cooked perfectly with a crisp outside and tender inside, and the flavors of the taco additions paired very well. We came here on November 9th for lunch and had an excellent experience. The restaurant is very cozy (especially perfect on a cold day) and the decor was beautiful. The owner was very friendly and provided top notch service. He was very passionate about food and was attentive to his customers, which was appreciated. The food was delicious and the quantity was perfect. They have a variety of options available and can cater to different food tastes. I recently got the Cioppino from graze and it was absolutely delicious, full of flavour and a nice amount of seafood within the stew. My partner got the merger burger which isn't low in price and they did not have the halloumi to go with it so we added cheddar instead, this burger was accompanied with fries. He seemed to really enjoy it which was great and he finished the whole thing I did try it and although flavourful it did seem very heavy and greasy. Some things at this restaurant seemed a little disorganized or unprofessional within the servers but I could also see they were working hard and may have just been overwhelmed. A perfect first meal for our time in Canmore! Our warm Canadian hosts recommended us incredibly delectable dishes. We tried elk in a burger for the first time and it was love at first taste. Dipped in blueberry aioli, the gamey meat tasted complex and elegant at the same time. We also thoroughly enjoyed the salmon rice bowl with yummy greens. The butternut-yam soup went well with the rice as it was almost like a curry. It was a tad heavy but the addictive fries and locally-brewed pear cider balanced it out. If this is your first time to Canmore on vacation, your dining experience probably won't be bad- but if you are a local of Canmore, you would know that this is NOT A PLACE TO EAT. My experience of the service was awkward, weird, and downright unproffesional. I have also heard stories similar to my own from locals of Canmore, so I am not alone. Our dining experience began being awkward even before my friend and I decided to eat there. This was in July when we were on Main street and were scanning across the menus posted on the patios of restaurants to see what we wanted to eat. A man (who we assumed to be the host of Graze) came up to us saying "What are you waiting for? Comon, the food is great, there's a seat right there". I was hiking around Kananaskis country all summer so I had a journal to document my hikes, it was in my arm as I was walking. As we were starting the conversation with the host, he glanced at the journal, said "What's this?" Took it OUT OF MY HAND and then proceeded to flip through it. After a few moments and seeing my surprised face, he said "Oh.. this is a journal" and then handed it back to me. Despite this awkward incident, we still decided to eat there since there was a table open on the patio he had gestured to. The patio was nice and had good seating and there were umbrellas to block the sun on the hot days. Since the host had gestured to this table, we assumed he would come over and bring menus with him, but we did not see a single server, or the host, for ten minutes. We began to doubt whether this man was ACTUALLY a host or just a random guy on the sidewalk telling people to sit down. Finally, a server came, but not without his fare share of awkward incidents as well. First of all, when he was handing out the menus and asking us what drinks we would like, my friend had asked what the special was for the day. He then gestured towards a server next to him that was walking by and said "She's special". We realize he was trying to be humorous, but at this point the two of us were hungry and just wanted a recommendation of what to eat. Then, of all things to happen, this server looks at my hike journal on the table and PICKS IT UP AND LOOKS THROUGH IT TOO. The same thing happened where he proceeded to flip through the book, say "oh, this is a diary", and then put it back down. By this point, I had given up trying to journal during my wait because obviously I wouldn't be getting any privacy. The food came in a reasonable amount of time and the server came to refill our drinks in a timely manner. When it came to the food, it was fine but not something that I will remember forever. The price is higher than average places considering that it's in a mountain town. Also, with a name like Graze, I was expecting this restaurant to be vegetarian, but it is typical pub food variety with some fresh twists. I had a calamari salad which was neat to have calamari in a salad. I have one more incident to report of this dining experience. My friend and I were sitting on the patio where half of the table was next to a bench/booth style seating and the other half of the table was chairs. I was sitting on the booth side and she on the chair side. While we were halfway through our meal, the server comes over, fills our drinks, and then plops himself down on the booth next to me and stretches his arms out. He lets out a sigh and says "I gotta have my 15 minute break sometime" and pretends to take a nap. Again, I think this was him trying to add humor to our visit; but when you are trying to eat- you don't want to sniff a guy's armpit next to you. When describing this incident to other locals from Canmore, they have said they had that same server do a similar stunt to them at the restaurant as well. My final remarks: If you go here once, you may have a nice time so maybe risk it, but if you come multiple times you may notice how awkward and unprofessional the service is here. DONT BRING JOURNALS WITH YOU My remarks for Graze: Make your host look professional, like a host. And bring menus with you when you seat people. Dont take "naps" next to customers. Don't take people's personal items out of their hands. Please. Either the host or the server I had are an owner of this restaurant, because to hear multiple bad experiences from people in Canmore, it means someone needs to be fired.
