I have a love hate relationship with grasshopper. On the plus side 10 bucks can get you a few days worth of food (more on that later...), their miso soup is awesome, and for the most part its a vegetarian/vegan restaurant... so no worries about meat. Ohh and their vegetable fried rice is great. On the down side, I cant finish anything because its just so sub par. I literally don't want to eat it anymore. Which you can use to your advantage and take the huge portions home. If your a big fan of this kinda thing, completely disregard my extreme biases i'm just not a big fan of this food in general. The boy brought me here as a surprise (and perhaps an olive branch) because I really don't like eating meat and I think we do it too often. That being said, I also don't like fake meat. We had gotten takeout from JT Scalleywags in the past, and the whole "chiken" thing always bugged me. Can we just eat real vegetables/legumes? Whats with the fake stuff? We both agreed on that before we ordered, and the night was relatively successful. We started with the miso soup (more his thing than mine). It was definitely the freeze-dried kind, and it came kinda cold, but we sent it back and enjoyed it when it was returned to us warm and ready-to-eat. Then we ordered the veggie tempura, which was entirely too much food-- HOLY COW-- this is a meal. I wouldn't order it for an appetizer unless you're a table of 4 or more. I think we also got some spring rolls, which, for the life of me I can't remember, so consider them unremarkable. The boy ordered the Spicy Curry Vermicelli Noodles, which was strange because he doesn't love curry or spicy things, but I ate most of it the next day for my lunch, and it was very good. I ordered the grasshopper supreme and it was fabulous. The eggplant and mushrooms were perfect, the black bean sauce was great, and the spinach and asparagus held up for 2 days and through 2 reheatings-- this was a GREAT all-vegetable dish. The serving staff is super-sweet too-- the elderly man server is adorable. They lose 1 star because the bathroom is not fit for human use and I really hoped our adorable eldery server sanitized his hands after being in there. enough said. read more

Before my first visit to Grasshopper, it had been my first dining experience at a vegan restaurant. The novelty of it all really widened my eyes and filled my stomach with all sorts of appetizers in attempt to try a little bit of everything. Since then, I had always remembered this place quite fondly, always dreaming of the tofu "chicken" fingers. I revisited recently, namely to get my grubby hands on some of those Sweet & Sour tofu fingers, which were still very delicious, although the sauce did leave some sort of strange texture in my mouth. Regardless, I wasn't disappointed and was left extremely full of vegan chinese junk food. Our server, while taking our orders, seemed to want to show off her memory skills by asking for only the numbers that match up with our menu orders, but she then failed to remember to bring one of our dishes. This was another double date. My friends downed a shared veggie lo mein dish which left them both full: an impression on how big the servings you get for your money. My boyfriend ordered the Chicken Style Curry, which at the end of the meal, looked like he hadn't even touched it. Having had the chance to give the Grasshopper another chance, with a couple of additional years of vegan experience, I must say my impression of it has slightly diminished. Mainly due to the fact that I've shifted more towards accidently vegan eating rather than tofu-everything dishes. So far, I've enjoyed everything I've eaten here - it really is good junk, though my cravings for this kind of food doesn't come too often. With Peace O' Pie right next store, I gotta say I'd be more inclined to get a slice of dairy/soy-free pizza over imitation veggie squid, but I am grateful for it's existence. read more

I tried this place for the first time last night and I must say I was most definitely pleased. I didn't think someone could pull off vegan chinese food especially since I'm a meat lover, but the seitans were extremely satisfying! We tried 4 different plates, I had the No Name which is basically like sweet and sour chicken (it tasted just like it, I couldn't tell it was fake chicken). My friends ordered the beef seitan coconut curry platter (delicious), chicken seitan with asparagus and snow peas (yummy), and the watercress (had never tried, but really did enjoy). It's an added bonus that they serve their entrees with brown rice for a dollar extra (nice way to add a healthy kick to the meal) and the jasmine tea is both complimentary and savory. We tried the cheesecake for dessert, but it tasted a little too much like tofu for my taste and the strawberry sauce was not anything special (seemed like canned sauce if you ask me). Overall, I'd come here again and would recommend it to anyone who loves asian food. read more

I'm not the biggest Vietnamese food fan. I'm also a vegetarian that doesn't really like veggies. I'm more of a carbotarian lol. With all that...I have to say that this vegan restaurant is one of the best in Boston. The food is delicious and you are served big portions. You will probably have leftovers to take home. The restaurant makes their own table cloths and are up for purchase if that's your fancy. The staff is friendly and they are usually busy, but I have never had to wait for a seat. Like most Asian restaurants you have to learn to order the right meal that suits your tastes best. I LOVE the "No name dish" which is kind of like a barbecue plate, only vegan. The ambiance is not the classiest, but the food more than makes up for that. I may obsessively love the No-Name (on the specials menu) and have to schedule my visits so I don't over eat it. The Chicken fingers are another favorite of mine. I do also greatly appreciate the large variety of options on the menu and the greens (Kale, spinach, etc) to balance out the very unhealthy options. They have huge portions so that I can spend $30 and eat for days. And they take bike benefits...ride your bike there and parking isn't an issue! Its one of the places I will miss when I move and make a point to hit up when I come back for a visit. read more

Ordered the veggie lo mein and the stir fried coconut curry and veggies,, both tasted horrible. Ordered from grasshopper because 12 hours was not available. Both dishes were slimy and flavorless,, the curry sauce was horrible and the lo mein tasted like tofu water,, it was only edible after adding our own hoisin sauce and sriracha. Even after adding our own flavor it was very unappetizing. I wouldn't even be wasting my time to write a review on this but for 40$ I would expect some morsel of love put into the food. Favorite restaurant in the Boston area! Went with my meat eating friend and he got the crispy battered sweet and sour "chicken" and was blown away! He said it tasted like the real deal! I got the eggplant in black bean sauce absolutely phenomenal. The delight soup is very nourishing, almost a gravy like consistence. I've been here twice, and both times, the food was not that good. The first time, I ordered the orange "chicken" (seitan). The taste was fine, but it was almost all breading. The second time, I ordered take-out and got beef fried rice, and it was beyond disappointing. It was overcooked and mushy, and it was mostly white rice with soy sauce in a few spots. I thought fried rice would be a safe thing to get here, but I was mistaken. Maybe this was a one-off, but to me, it's a wonder that this restaurant has 4 stars. read more

The food is to die for! We absolutely loved it. I had the coconut vermicelli noodles with shrimp and I think it's the best flavor in noodles I've ever had. And the shrimp got me amazed. I had to ask if they were really not real because they looked and tasted soooo good! My fiancé got the no name and loved it. These four stars are purely for the food. We had the Kale Supreme, Eggplant Tofu and the Fried veg dumpling and they were all delicious! Good sizable portions. The tea wasn't too bad either. Fantastic food. Meh atmosphere. The Vermicelli dish (number 52 I believe) was delicious. Their mushroom soup was also hearty and tasty. The atmosphere was dark, cold, and silent. I think turning up the thermostat a couple of degrees, getting a designer consultant to help with the restaurant, and maybe putting on some music could have turned this 4 star into a 5 star review. A healthier take on chinese food! Portions are massive. The lo-mein is chocked full of veggies and not overdone. I had to triple check that the whole menu was vegan once I saw that they offered both shrimp and squid (vegetable based, of course) as meat options for lo-mein. (Shrimp was amazing, by the way). Came with friends for the vegan buffet (I believe it's the third Sunday of the month?). It was great! Great deal, especially if you go in the evening because where else can you pay such good prices for ayce dinner? I'm not vegan, but I enjoyed most of the dishes and didn't miss the meat at all. They are a little more starch heavy (e.g. egg rolls with lots of taro instead of cabbage and other veggies), and my vegan friend says the buffet spread doesn't change much. But for the tastiness, vegan factor (if you have friends who are vegan/vegetarian), and value, this place was great! I highly recommend trying the monthly buffet! read more

I'm not a big fan of this place. I strongly prefer My Thai in comparison. First off, as a vegan I am deeply disturbed to see an 'aqua prison' there. what's up with that? They don't eat fish but think its ok to keep them around as a decoration? Seems rather contradictory if you ask me. The service was really good and I liked my seaweed salad a LOT. However, I wasn't very happy with the fake meat they have there. My Thai's fake meat is way better. Also, I wonder if their claims to being vegan have been fact checked by anyone like I know My Thai's has. Other than that, I think its ok. I'd heard good things about Grasshopper long before I moved into the area. Overall I was pleased. The chicken (style tofu) and broccoli was good and the atmosphere was nice. If you'd told me I was eating chicken, I wouldn't have known that I wasn't. They lose a star because they sat us (2 people) at a 4-person table, and after sitting there for five minutes, they asked us to move to a smaller table to accommodate a party of 4 that had just walked in. The place is so small and it was crowded, so it was a little embarassing to have to move all our stuff and drinks to a smaller table in the corner. Also, I ordered chicken (style tofu) and broccoli and they put some beef style in there too. Not sure if that was to try and make up for moving us, but I didn't want it and it was a pain to pick it out. We'll be back - even though we're carnivores. read more

I went to Grasshopper with my parents this weekend. We ordered tempura as appetizer, 3 main dishes and a slice of cheesecake. Their tempura was definitely the worst I've ever had. They need to put some effort into the batter, it shouldn't be just plain flour and water. The sauce that came with it was decent though. As for the 3 main dishes, I can't even remember what we ordered because they all tasted the SAME!! A wise restaurant owner knows that simply by having more "things" on the menu won't necessarily make the restaurant competitive or special. What matters is that EVERY item on the menu is memorable. Treat customers as if they are guests coming to your house for dinner. Put out only the good dishes and leave the mediocre ones for your own experiment. Finally the cheesecake, it was not bad but not memorable. My mom tried a bite, she said it was good. The consistency was fairly dense and I could only finish half the slice. I will only go back to Grasshopper for their Sunday buffet. It's a good place to stuff yourself with "things" that happen to be vegan. Afterward you will feel disgustingly full but won't remember what you had. Suggestion to the chef: put some soul into the food! read more

This restaurant is truly lacking in anything of interest to me. Now I'll admit right now I am not a vegan nor a vegetarian, but I have had plenty of vegan friendly cuisine that tops this place by far. Each time I have been there (3 times) the service has quite frankly sucked, having to wait for 45 minutes after being seated once to even get some tea. On top of that having found stains on my plates/utensils on each visit. I was vastly disappointed of this place, and feel it did not hold up to its hype. I have had quite a bit of food off the menu, and found most of it to be lacking in something, some of which is flavor, while others I feel it was substance. This place has some great dishes. Their vegetable tempura is excellent. Their braised tofu is excellent. I ordered spicy tofu with veggies (which was not on the menu) and that was excellent too! I've had some mediocre dishes there... the vermicelli hand rolls are good, but I've had much better in Boston (My Thai Vegan Cafe (called Roll Sod, there)). There beef and broccoli is pretty good. I have NEVER written a bad review on a food restaurant, let alone a review at all. The hot and sour soup from here was sickening. It has like this weird tomatoey pastey taste. I can't even describe it. And they LOAD it with tofu chunks. I'm like "put some broth in my tofu please." The kale dish I got was soaked in whatever they cooked it in. SOAKED. AND if you are a life long vegetarian like I am, you might not appreciate the attempt to make the tofu look and taste like meat. Best Vegan Restaurant in Boston area! Mushroom soup is friggin amazing and I love how the waitresses emphasize that it's good for your lungs...really cute. Tofu lo mein, Seitan stir fries, no name and veggie tempura are all delicious. Delicious enormous piles of vegan food. The inside of the restaurant is modest and cheerful. Crispy taro nest was pretty and well-seasoned, sweet and sour sensation was a gigantic mound of freshly fried nuggets. The fried vegetable dumplings only come with 5 pieces but are definitely worth getting. This is long overdue. I've been going to Grasshopper for 12 years now and never had a bad meal. The people that run it are lovely, the quality is higher than average, and the portions are generous. YAY for the VEGAN corner of Allston! Grasshopper and Peace-o-Pie!!!! I love how much food Grasshopper gives you! So much foooood! I love the veggie duck and the spring rolls are incredible. I love going there and hanging with the vegan Allston crowd. I took folks there for my birthday and we took up a third of the place. It was great though, they were super accommodating and we all had a great time with great food. Watch out for too much gluten!!! It will rock your stomach later and you'll probably wish you were dead. read more
