Buffet ($16)
Rachel S.

This hidden gem (literally tucked in the back of the food court in a Chinese supermarket) has such a good buffet for only $16 every third Sunday of the month! My family and I went to try the buffet, and there were 10 dishes available with plenty of sauces and toppings too. There were two soups, lo mein, rice, and an assortment of veggies with vegan meat and fried foods as well. So worth the price! The soups weren't liked by the group and were a bit sour, while the spring rolls specifically didn't seem fresh, but everything else tasted great, particularly the vegetables and meats. You can also get tupperware for takeout (containers for soup, appetizer, and entree) for the same price. The staff were very friendly and attentive at making sure foods were restocked. There was plenty of seating available!

I sought this place out of convenience as it was walkable from my other destination. It's in a food hall, and ordering was confusing. They made it seem like they weren't providing service and you had to order online, but when I did they told me I could have ordered in person. The food hall was a tad sketch, not the cleanest, so I was happy to move on. The hot pot dish I got had a zingy flavor with abundant lemongrass and I enjoyed it, but it didn't come with rice. Given the lack of ambiance and service, the value of money for food was not what I'd hoped. You can definitely get some interesting vegetarian cuisine here if you're willing to live with the limitations.

Wow hidden gem for sure. Food was great! Super reasonable price too. Eat in and you'll be served tea and all the sauces your heart wishes. The fried mushroom wontons (?) were super delicious, and the vermicelli hand rolls were deliciously fresh. Service is super accommodating and atmosphere is that of a mall.

Grasshopper is a solid choice, but not necessarily one I would choose again soon. It is located inside the Super 88 Food Court, which doesn't have the best decor or vibes. My partner and I ordered and split the house lo mein and the sweet and sour tofu chicken fingers. Starting with what they did well: I really liked the "beef" on the lo mein, my partner liked the "shrimp," and I thought the vegetables and the sweet and sour sauce were perfect. To me, though, the tofu chicken fingers had WAY too much breading and ended up tasting more like fried dough with a tiny nugget of tofu inside. Additionally, I felt like the lo mein did not have enough seasoning. The portions are large, so you do get good value. The person who took our order was attentive and the food came out quickly. Not my favorite but I can see it being a good choice for quick vegetarian eats if you're in the area.

So sad that they're closing at the end of May! They've been open for 27 years, and all my vegan friends love the place. The portions are big, the prices are very reasonable, and the flavors are good. For reference, I went with a party of 7, and the bill came to $100 before tip, with two boxes of leftovers. PSA: It's the kind of vegan place where a lot of the dishes are named after the meat/fish options that they're inspired by (e.g., lobster, seafood, chicken, beef). But I don't think the taste is meaty or fishy at all for most dishes. The one thing that is slightly interesting and closer to the original is the "shrimp": It resists a bit, just like shrimp, and it's striped.

Grasshopper is back! So very happy to be able to enjoy fantastic vegan Chinese food. The new location is inside the 88 market food court. There are many choices however Grasshopper is the best!

I do not like eating the same place twice during a vacation but the kids insisted. Pork Xiao Long Bao is as advertised. Juicy an moist in the inside, chewy and soft on the outside, kids could not stop eating it. My personal favorite was the House Special Hand Cut Noodles w/ Soup. The broth with the texture of the handout noodles was a match worth eating. The restaurant did do last calls from food 20min before closing time which was a surprise, but we were already done eating by then so did not bother us but do be aware.

The pork and shrimp wonton soup was brought a perfect balance to the flavorful meal and it's broth was super yummy. The cucumber salad was seasoned perfectly and was a nice balance to the otherwise heavy meal. My favorite is probably the pork xiao long bao, but honestly, you can't go wrong with anything you order. Service was great. Both times we were a party of two and were seated quickly, if not immediately. Food came out very fast. Will 100% be returning.

The noodles were springy and cooked perfectly, though I probably would like the thick noodles better next time (they have thin, regular, thick, wide, and extra wide sizes). I ordered the non-spicy version, but it can also be ordered as mild, regular, or extra hot. With the non-spicy version, the broth was still very flavorful and meaty. You're able to add cilantro and leeks if you'd like as well, and the soup comes with some sliced thin radish in it. When the bowl arrived, the radish was a little undercooked, but by the end of the meal they had cooked decently in the hot broth. Now while I don't think I could have handled the mild version, I was happy that the tables came equipped with chili oil and vinegar, which I added to a plate and dipped my noodles in for a slight kick. I think this was perfect - since ordering a spicier version would have been too much, but the ability to add my own helped me regulate the strength and added a lot of great flavor to the noodles. The price for a bowl was $16, and that's what makes this a 4 star instead of a 5. Altogether, I was still hungry after finishing the bowl - I would have liked if there were a little more noodles or maybe some veggies included for that price. The meat was also a bit scarce, and it was a little dry as well. Still, the broth and the side of chili oil made it very tasty!

Each of the times I remembered were tasty. The ambiance when you arrive is dramatic Chinese music in the background which makes it somewhat difficult to converse with your group. Most recently we arrived with a group of 8 for our 7:30 pm reservation without any issues. All the other tables were full but we noticed the restaurant cleared out after an hour of us being there past the peak hours. They gave us 2 containers of the standalone spicy powder so people could add on as they wanted and the less spice tolerant in our group weren't saddled with the consequences. I tried the following dishes: Lamb & Beef Kebabs - 3 sticks per order I preferred the beef texture and taste over the lamb. BBQ Lamb Ribs - they said this was the only dish that came default spicy but I didn't think it was that spicy. the smoking in the raised wooden container gave it additional flavor. I preferred lamb ribs over the kebabs. Torched Beef - one of the favorites for our table the sauce with it was also super tasty. Big Squid - challenging to cut but they give a lot of pieces and generous portion with a special sauce. Grandma's juicy pork buns - on the small side, topped with black sesame and sauce you can add on the side. it was juicy as advertised. Cucumber salad - refreshing and included peanuts for texture and flavor. Fried tofu - not too memorable but the fried texture was tasty. Bok choy - I enjoyed the sauce spread across this veggie dish. Shiitake & King Oyster Mushroom - these are 2 separate orders but I can't remember which was the skewer and which was on a regular plate. Both were overall tasty. Cauliflower - Another solid veggie option but nothing too memorable if you want to focus mainly on protein. BBQ Bread slice - one of the inauthentic cuisines and it's like French toast Kaoijiu dragon yogurt- I was expecting more dragon fruit flavor so that was a bit disappointing but it still tasted good overall. I am not sure it's worth the $10 dessert price. Overall solid food options and we didn't have any leftovers so it ended up being ~$40-60 per person depending if people also ordered drink/dessert. Worth checking out if you haven't had a chance to before they are gone forever!

Service was quick, plus you can usually find a spot if you're aiming to grab a bite on a weekday. Only main downside is that it's more or less street parking, but it's not far from the D train. Anyway, I feel like I almost always go for their northeastern sweet and sour pork as it has a solid texture to it: being very juicy and chewy, yet maintaining a nice crispness to each bite - likely from the sticky/glutinous rice flour, which adds a subtle sweetness to it underneath the sweet and tangy sauce around the pork. Would also recommend their deep fried mushrooms, if you're aiming to have a drink with a crunchy snack, as they're quite addictive. Though frankly, I feel that a fair number of their goodies do pair well with a nice drink or two Definitely coming back for more.

So mind you, I was super surprised by this place. Clay pot rice is hard to find to begin with. Good claypot rice is a treasure. This place got my parents as my approval so that bar as high as heck. This is a definite must for those who want authentic Chinese food in Boston. We ordered their chicken with mushroom, two clay pots of frog, a vegetable one, Chinese sausage with bacon, and a preserved duck claypot rice. We had my brother's friend and my husband too so this was for a party of 6. We also ordered their sauteed lettuce, soup dumplings and their house chicken. Their house chicken is to die for. Oh my lord is it good. Their sauteed lettuce was pretty good too. The only one that fell really flat was the soup dumplings. Pretty sure they're frozen ones...and they kept ripping/sticking to the paper under them...on top of being way too close to each other that they all stuck. Um...yeah, hard pass on that next time. But the claypot rice is absolutely delicious. Add the claypot rice soy sauce and you're golden. Only thing that was different and this is more of a personal preference...less ginger? I know ginger is needed but having small planks of them showing up is a bit much. Minced maybe? Even strip to pick out is fine. But happily eating claypot rice only to bite into a piece of ginger is not so nice. The only claypot rice I didn't care much for was the preserved duck...it's not really my thing. My brother ordered it but I prefer normal roast duck to preserved. Tasted kind of weird. Still, lot of good food here. But perhaps stick to their house chicken, sauteed vegetables and their claypot rice. Skip the soup dumpling.

That's where the beautiful aromatic flavors marry with the rice and what makes the entire dish. The aromatics were very few as well. Their service and ambiance were okay nothing special.
