Very chill, cozy, casual, and welcoming: Entering the restaurant, you order at the front counter and pay for your food. You fill your own water pitcher, then seat yourself. I like the flow of Grassa because you get to enjoy everything at your own pace. Most restaurants in Portland, due to high volume of traffic I tend to feel rushed. There can be a bit of a wait during standard mealtimes, so I'll order online... if you're a garlic fan make sure you get the garlic bread. On a busy Saturday night, we were on a hunt for family friendly restaurant in NW Portland. It came as a shock to us that the 2 restaurants we walked into were bars and wouldn't allow minors. Anyway grassa came to the rescue. There was a line to order, which wasn't that bad because it gave us plenty of time to decide on our order. The place inside was as busy as can be but we did find a place to sit down after our order. My daughter had the kids miles for dinner. We ordered the meatballs for appetizer. For dinner we had the Aglio olio, Fusili ala vodka and Truffle pappardelle. We ordered fewe drinks as well. A limeade and Arnold palmer for the kids - they had no complaints. We had a Piano has been drinking and a Back white and red for the adults . The drinks are all pre made, so they came super quick. The alcoholic drinks were kind of meh. However the meatballs were very good. We licked it clean. Our dinner took time to come by. The portions are bit on the smaller side(for the price) but taste was very good. It's been a while since I last had Grassa so I'm glad I stopped in recently! Their pastas have always been bomb. I remember the first and only other time I had their carbonara and will admit that I wasn't impressed initially because it was dry and not flavorful whatsoever. I would like to think that it was maybe due to the fact that it was a very busy dinner night so maybe that was a factor then? Anyways, I decided to give it another shot this time around and it was significantly better than I remembered. My boyfriend ordered the pork belly Mac + cheese and it was fireee - per usual. Yum!!!! We love Grassa. It's a quick, order-at-the-counter, delicious pasta experience. Everything we've had from here has been very enjoyable and the portions are nice too. We love the braised lamb pasta the most but it does get heavy, so we will switch our pasta places halfway through our meal for variety. Homemade pasta place on NW 23rd. This was my first visit. I had a pumpkin ravioli, this was so yummy with a bit of sweetness from the pumpkin and ricotta cheese. They have more stuffing than regular shaped ravioli. I highly recommend this dish. However, the plate of fritto misto was 85% over fried onions and 15% calamari. I've been looking forward to trying this place for quite a while and it was painfully mediocre enough to where I am not keen on trying it again. We ordered a plate of carbonara, the squid ink pasta, garlic bread and the fritto misto (calamari). The carbonara was pretty dry, the noodles were pretty chewy and the flavors of the sauce itself in the squid ink were overpowering. The garlic bread was hard and most of the fritto misto was soggy like it hadn't been fried long enough. Delicious home made pasta served perfectly al dente with piping hot sauce! Love! As with their other two locations, this is counter service; order, take a number, food arrives at your table. This is what keeps the prices in check so you pay $10-17 for pasta dishes whereas many other Italian places charge $18-28. I will order at the counter any day of the week! What I can't figure out is if the business model is counter service, why did Grassa not design their space to accommodate people waiting in line at the counter for service??? When you enter the door, there are 3 steps you walk up and then you are immediately at the counter. That works if you are the only person or two in line. More than that and people huddle in the stairwell. In space in front of the counter is barely 4 feet wide and is the only pathway to the dining area to the left and right. So it's a traffic path congested with the waitstaff delivering food and patrons walking by it to get a table. And people waiting for counter service! Last night around 6:15 there were 12+ people cramped in the stairwell Waiting to step up and out to order from the one cashier. People were entering the restaurant and trying squeeze past us to get to dining area to secure a table. People were squeezing by us to leave. The waitstaff had to squeeze past us with bowls of piping hot pasta. It just makes no sense! Music is not as loud and vibrating as the SE Hawthorne location so our table of 8 could actually have and hear conversation. A huge plus! We were doing a Wine Tasting and there is no corkage fee at Grassa, another huge positive!!! I'm a creature of habit but last night deviated from the Rigatoni with Sunday Ragu or Cacio e Pepe and ordered the Radiatore with a beef and pork bolognese ($13) and a side of grilled mustard greens ($6.) The pasta was good but lacked the depth of flavor that's in their signature ragu. The greens were a total miss. Expecting the bitterness of mustard greens, my tastebuds were thrown off by the super sweet taste from way too much honey. I left it barely touched. Next time, I will stick to my tried and true faves. Grassa, at any location, is still one of my favorite spots for fresh and delicious pasta. It's a casual atmosphere and a great dining choice when you are craving a bowl of delicious Italian comfort food without the pretentiousness. Parking at this location is challenging at dinner time, especially on a weekend. I'm a big fan of Grassa and their Carbonara typically hits. Well... at least at the other locations I've eaten at in Portland, Hawthorne and Washington St locations. However, just had it at SW 23rd and was pretty disappointed. It was watery, bland, extremely pepper forward (pretty much all you tasted), and the lardons were extremely over cooked. Lardons were cut small and hard with the consistency of jerky. Also the garlic bread seemed stale. Overall not a great experience. Going forward will stray away from this location. read more

It bums me out to be leaving a mid range review for Grassa, but this location just doesn't live up to the others. I am a Grassa FANATIC. Usually, I crave their perfectly cooked pasta and cheesy garlic bread. I visited this location yesterday for the first time and was disappointed. My bread was burnt and overly crunchy, the pasts was overcooked and gooey, and the tables were all dirty. I went around 12:30 and it wasn't busy by any means, so I'm not sure why the quality was so lacking. I've been to the locations on Burnside, in South East, and in Lake Oswego. I've never had a negative thing to say about any of them, but I think this was the first and last time I try this location. read more

You have to pay and order before sitting, so I headed to the counter. Wasn't really greeted and felt a little rushed, but that's okay. The prices were pretty affordable, which was a really nice surprise. Paid and was quickly asked to take a seat with the number that was given to me. The vibe of the restaurant when I went was a little quiet, it was right before dinner rush after all. The kitchen was open concept and I was able to watch the pasta being made, which was pretty cool! It did take a while for my food to be ready even in an empty restaurant at the time, about 30-40 minutes. At least it was made fresh and from scratch. Was finally served my pasta (no smile or acknowledgement what so ever), but it looked gorgeous! Couldn't stop taking pictures! Nice and hot, creamy, and right amount of al dente! Large pieces of pancetta as well. Also had some crispy toppings, maybe breadcrumbs and parnassian cheese? Really added to the texture. So good! The egg on top was the perfect touch! I don't understand how one can mess up pasta this bad. Jarred pasta sauce with dry pasta would've been better. We ordered the variety - a burrata for the table, two Sunday special bolognese rigatonis, a carbonara and a cacio e pepe. EVERYTHING. WAS. BLAND. Not to mention cold too. We were the only customers there at 5pm on a Sunday evening, so I don't know how the pasta came out cold when there were no other orders to make. Cacio e pepe is typically made with a salty Pecorino cheese and black pepper. Carbonara is made with salty pancetta or bacon and Parmesan cheese. This is why it boggles my mind how BLAND both of these dishes were. Where on earth did the salt go? The bolognese had a hint of a hint of tomato flavor. Meat tasted like it was boiled in plain water then mixed in to the sauce. The parsley on top had more flavor than the sauce. Honestly making hand made pasta seems like such a waste of time if the sauce isn't going to enhance any flavor to the dish. One last comment about the burrata.... Isn't the joy of eating burrata cheese slicing through the ball and spreading it on baguette or crostini? This burrata came pre smeared and maybe it was because they wanted to hide the fact that it was not even one whole ball of burrata. Also - fruit flies everywhere in the restaurant. While I had one hand on a fork, the other hand was busy swatting flies. We sat near a corner that had cobwebs full of dead fruit flies. The quality speaks for itself; Grassa's pasta dishes are handmade with super fresh ingredients, and they're so good! This is a must-stop anytime someone comes to visit us in PDX. I'm still relatively new to the area, so I'm not sure how often they update their menu, but a few vegetarian go-tos are no longer available. Thankfully the Spaghettis Aglio Olio and Al Pesto are both 10/10, so you really can't go wrong. The restaurant is kind of dark and moody, casual, and you can pretty much sit wherever. Food felt like it took a little long, but I guess when you have handcrafted pasta and it's a bumpin' Friday night, you gotta have patience! We ordered Squid Ink Tonnarelli and the Chicken Marsala and both were soooo worth the wait. The Squid Ink had shrimp and meatballs. Those meatballs are heavenly and the whole dish tasted so good together even though you had these meaty meatballs and shrimp in the same bowl! On a Thursday night this place still had a line out the door that was 15 minutes. Food: I got the Radiatore and wow I loved the portion sizes here it's definitely filling! After ordering, it took approximately 50 minutes for our food to arrive. Bucatini: Disappointing. Lacked flavor and had a very watery consistency. I felt as though I was eating plain noodles with basil. This dish needs more cheese, salt, pepper, and stronger pesto. Would not spend $14 again to have what tastes like wet spaghetti. Cacio e Pepe: This dish really stole the show. Excellent combination of flavors, without being overly rich. Would skip the menu and order this right away next time! Corn Salad: Really fun combination of flavors. The sour blueberries mixed with the corn and herbs made for a unique combination. The size was the perfect amount to hold me over until the pasta arrived. Would order again. Mac and Cheese: Pretty average as far as mac and cheese goes. The pork belly was overly sweet and I ended up eating around it. Would not order again. Overall, food was average. While the Cacio e Pepe was delicious and would bring me back into Grassa, nothing else was that impressive. If you are having an absolute pasta craving and do not mind waiting an hour for food, Grassa may be for you. When considering the wait time and prices, I would not come back otherwise. We were downtown for an appointment and decided to find something to grab and take home for supper. This place looks good so we order online and it was ready to be picked up in 25 minutes. Not bad for a Friday night at 6 PM. There is street parking which we found pretty easily and walked right in and it was ready within the suggested timeframe. Drove 15 minutes and got home to eat. I got the pasta with the beef and pork Bolognese with pecorino. I heated it up for about 30 seconds and it was perfect. I really enjoyed the flavor and the pasta was cooked perfectly. We got garlic bread to dip into the extra sauce that I asked for. I'm sure the garlic bread would've been much better had it been fresh at the table like in the old days! The flavor was still good but It had hardened a bit by the time we got home. We ordered some brussels sprouts which were off the charts wonderful and a Caesar salad that had wonderful flavor with a hint of lemon which I enjoy. My wife got here Texas pasta which was wonderful. The first time that I tried this place was about a year and a half ago and the food was purely amazing! However, I want to write the review today specifically about my take-out experience since now due to COVID there is not possible to dine in anymore. This is the first time that I have tried taking out from Grassa, and I was a little disappointed. I understand that takeout will never be able to be the same as eat in when the food is fresh and just cooked. We have tried the online ordering system directly from the restaurant website, and there were a lot of dishes are not available anymore, especially the squid ink pasta. Unfortunately, that's also the picture mostly show up in Yelp review. The food took way longer than I thought to get cooked. I understand it is freshly made pasta, but we had to wait about an hour for our food to get ready. I would suggest you order early since we didn't and had to wait in our car for quite a long time. We got the food and it was good but tbh not that impressive. One suggestion will be maybe punching a hole in the takeout box since our food was quite 'wet; due to the condensation. We ordered Porkbelly Mac & Cheese, Rigatoni, Garlic Bread, and meatballs. The garlic bread is definitely not a good takeout idea, the bread is no longer crispy and warm. Also, the Porkbelly I got is extremely fatty and I ended up had to throw quite a lot out since it gets too oily. Overall, the food is a bit disappointing. With all this mediocre takeout experience, I was charged a mandatory service fee. This makes me feel not really fair since where is the service =(. DO NOT ORDER TAKEOUT from grassa. My fiancé and I ordered the pork belly Mac and cheese online. We placed our order on their website and it said the food would be ready in an hour. I was surprised by how long the preparation time would be and thought the website may be incorrect. I called the restaurant and the woman on the phone assured me that they were busy and it would most likely be an hour, but that they would update me if it was ready sooner. I don't get any updates and pick up the food 2 minutes after a "your food is ready" text notification, the predictable hour after ordering. The food was COLD. I looked at the bag and the receipt that had been stapled into the bag to seal the food inside said "5:43 pickup". 30 minutes before I got the ready notification. Beyond being ice cold the food was TERRIBLE. There was basically 0 cheese on the Mac and cheese. Only had 2 shells that seemed to have some cheese sauce inside them. The noodles were bare. Basically butter noodles with some bbq Pork belly in them. The quantity was also tiny! I've eaten in grassa before and the quality was amazing.
