Just okay. We stopped here while on our Route 66 trip because it had an overall 4 star review rate. I had the southwest philly cheese steak sandwich and fries. The fries were good but the meat on the sandwich was overcooked and super chewy but dry. My sidekick had the fish and fries and some kind of soup. The fish pieces were a generous portion with light breading. It was a quick stop and the staff was friendly so that was a bright spot. The decor had that fun old school diner/cafe vibe one would expect out on The Mother Road. read more

Love this place was always a favorite place for my wife came back home to Gallup for a couple days stopped in and got some good green chilie with our chicken southwest and I got a double green chilie cheese burger was good hit the spot gotta bring back the self served chips and salsa hahahahaha good deal will be back for sure when we come home again read more

I have been in the area for over a week now and I have eaten here twice. My niece brought me here and I have to say it's really a great place. First visit I had the bbq ribs with a baked potato and it came with a side of what looked like an attempt at refried beans with a squirt of bbq sauce in it. It was pretty good. Today we went in because their burgers look amazing. As you walk in they're cooking everything right there to your left as you go in. You order your food off the menu before you sit down and they bring it to you. As well as your drink order. One problem right of the bat is the plexiglass they have in front of the person talking your order. Preventing them from hearing anything. They're struggling to hear what people are saying. Today I ordered onion rings with my burger and I got French fries instead. The guy just didn't hear what I said. Luckily I didn't get charged for it. I ordered the Papa Burger with pepper jack cheese and bacon. That was one hell of a burger. The fixins are on a cart as you go to your seat. Where you can add what you want to your burger. The only gripe I think I can say about this place is that you have to ask for napkins. Both times I've been in I've had to ask. As well as silverware. But the staff is very friendly and helpful. So it's not a deal breaker. I wish I lived closer because I would eat here a few times a week. I'd love to try their breakfast. But overall this place is pretty awesome. After seeing good reviews and decent pics from this place, I thought I was safe to go to Grandpa's. It's really mediocre. The staff is inexperienced in serving. The sandwiches won't fill you up. The dinner dishes are ok. The BLT we ordered had burnt toast, very little bacon and no mayo. Completely unimpressive, the waitress asked if we wanted new toast and walked off without the sandwich. She just brought back some toast for us to fix the sandwich ourselves. The fajitas were only ok. I'll give it one more chance on Tuesday for Taco Tuesdays. I was hoping for better food. read more

The burger I ordered was the double bacon avocado cheeseburger, burgers are small in comparison to the buns, dry and a bit rubbery, paper thin bacon strips (kinda reminded me of the Costco pre cooked microwaveable bacon) and no avocado. Chili cheese fries weren't bad. Missing heat from the chili but at least they had a sauce. Definitely friendly service. Wait staff were very polite and checked in on us throughout the meal. Nice spot as far as interior design. Almost an old timey feel. read more

Traveled to Gallup for work. Ended up stopping here because of the other positive reviews. Friendly and very attentive staff. It was cool watching them make my burger fresh. All the toppings in the lil condiment bar were fresh and consistently chopped. Now for my burger. It was cooked perfect and held together really well. I ordered the western burger. We made it to Gallup, NM safely! All praise to God! One more praise to the Lord. I had looked on Yelp for a restaurant. Since, we both have our peculiarities about our eating habits, I read every menu with more than 4stars. We selected the Route 66 Train Cafe. It looked like both of us would eat there. In God's providence we passed the driveway and had to go around the block. That is where we saw Grandpa's. Their menu posted on Yelp was very incomplete, so I did not suggest it. As we drove back to the other, I noticed the parking lot at Grandpa's was full. We continued back to the other, and the parking lot was empty, it was closed! So, we went around the block to Grandpa's with the menu that was highly suspect, from their Yelp listing. God's guidance once again was perfect! They had a huge charbroiler, and they were cooking over a charcoal fire! We both had delicious burgers! Everything was fresh, at the condiment bar. The sweet onions were fabulous! Their menu included pork chops, steaks, and more. Their service was incredible, they even offer chips and salsa. The salsa was fresh and just the right spice, to eat with my burger. The decor is so interesting they had antique cook stove in one corner with cast iron skillets and bakeware. Grandpa's has a large dining area, so finding seating was easy. It is definitely another Go to when traveling this way! God yet one more time met our needs in unexpected ways. read more

5 enthusiastic stars! The neighborhood doesn't look like much; the building, from the outside, isn't run down, but neither does it look like anything special. Go on in though, and you'll be glad you did. We were greeted warmly, and that first impression held up throughout our visit. I can personally vouch for the combination fajitas; they were very good. When traveling my husband and I like to eat at local restaurants. I told our hotel clerk two possible restaurants for dinner. Without hesitation, she said Grandpa's Grill. What a great place! On a Wednesday night, they were swamped, but all the staff was eager to please all the customers. Three times. staff members came over to see if everything was OK. The last was the owner's son, who we had a delightful conversation with. The menu provided lots of choices. I love the fact that the kids menu and senior menu is the same thing! We ordered a burger and dessert. The service was decent. They checked on us twice and both times asked if we were ready for our dessert. When we did ask, it never came. We had to go up to the manager who yelled at the staff then gave us our warmed up, freezer burned apple pie. Yuck! The food was decent but do not order the old freezer burned pie and packaged cup of ice cream. Not worth the money. read more

From the looks of it, you wouldn't expect much from Grandpa's Grill... On the outside, it looks like an industrialized building that has been through some seriously hard times... even the sign is a bit off-putting.... But once inside, it gives way to a beautifully quaint looking country kitchen. The delicious odor coming from the kitchen peaked my interest instantly, and I was excited by the variety offered on the menu. I'm not much of a coffee person, but brew at this establishment is quite flavorful and was a perfect compliment to my "handheld breakfast burrito." Freshly made salsa was the icing on the cake for me. SO DELICIOUS! The staff here is always on top of refills, asking if you're ok, or need anything else and are extremely friendly. Honestly, this is one of the top places on my list to satisfy my up and coming breakfast kick. I look forward to coming back to check out their lunch and dinner digs really soon! Found this restaurant on Yelp while driving through Gallup. What a gem! I ordered the 1/2 size grilled chicken salad. My husband had a hamburger. We saw the meat cooking on a real lump coal fire. The salad greens were not the usual iceberg and romaine, but beautiful leafy greens. The other ingredients were all fresh and delicious. Service was quick and friendly. This place was very busy. The staff knows what they are doing. The manager came out to check on us and was proud of his restaurant. I would come back in a heartbeat. read more

Their burgers are good! The service is great. I had one issue with a young man who handles the cashier/ service desk. He overcharged me for all my orders.
