We were passing through town and found this place. It's clearly a Locals place as we stuck out like sore thumbs. It was packed and we sat at the bar as no tables were available. It has an old time diner feel. Nothing fancy, but the restaurant was very clean. Tables were cleaned promptly when customers left. The employees were friendly and very busy. They quickly served the customers and didn't slow down the entire time I was there. The food was delivered quickly and was piping hot. The portions are huge and fairly priced. The Navajo Taco was gigantic and can easily be shared. It had plenty of meat, beans, and other fresh ingredients. The jumbo combo came with rice and refried beans. The beans were some of the best I have ever eaten. The taco, enchilada, and tamales that came with the combo were also delicious. read more

The red chili in this popular local restaurant is wonderfully flavorful and smoky without being spicy. The green chili is quite potent on the other hand. Enchiladas and tamales are house made. Beef enchiladas are made with ground beef instead of my preferred shredded beef. Like most other restaurants in town, the inside is plain but very clean. read more

We had a Navajo taco and a deluxe burger and the meat, beans and vegetables were all very fresh. The Navajo taco is pretty big and can be shared. Service was exceptional, the staff is super nice!! Restaurant was also super clean. Definitely worth the stop. read more

Bang a 5 star again! This place is soooo good. I had stopped here in 2019 and wrote a review. Wanted to go back then Covid hit. Well after two years I finally got to stop off here again. I ordered the three item combo ( beef taco, cheese enchilada and a chili Relleno.) with there green chili on top and was it delicious ( green chili is hot beware ). My waiter was the same Benny who waited on me on my first visit and again provided excellent service. After my meal Benny recommended a sopapilla, as I have no will power I said yes and it was a 5 star as well, in fact I couldn't eat it all. This isn't a fancy chain restaurant it's down home good southwest food. I hope you'll give Gordo's a try and enjoy it as much as I do. read more

100% delicious homemade type of food. Amazing service even for a huge group of 20+ people (Aztec Dancers from San Diego) when visiting for the inter-tribal ceremonial. Passing by Gallup I wanted to try some Mexican food and found this place. I wanted to try something new so I tried Navajo Tacos. I choose red chili sauce or green chili sauce. I chose red chili sauce because it's milder than green chili. I also got chopped onions and it gave good flavor. Never tried other Navajo Tacos but this one tasted really good. Was just driving around the side streets of Gallup and passed Gordos. We decided to get donuts at Glenn's. (Highly recommended). 2 women inside Glenn's told us to eat at Gordos which is basically next store. Killer chili rellenos (w green sauce) and chicken enchiladas ( half and half red and green aka xmas)Xmas. Some of the best I've had. Great service and reasonable prices. If you want some great New Mexico and Najavo cookie this is the place. It is a small restaurant a little bit off the highway, and very popular with the locals. The portions are enormous, and it tastes great. We can highly recommend the Navajo taco and the stuffed sopapilla. Very nice staff, and the lady that served me said that they were recooking my order because they made a mistake and added hot salsa, and they wanted me to enjoy the food. First and last time eating here on 8/14. Was excited but made the mistake dining 30 minutes before closing. Experienced nothing but mean looks from staff from beginning to end..tried to hold a conversation while they slammed chairs on and off tables and splashed smelly mop water on our ankles. As if it couldn't get worst, my Mother chipped her tooth on a dime size rock which she broke in half from the force of her bite. When we informed the waitress, she nonchalantly confirmed it was indeed a rock from their beans which she admitted they only clean 3 times until "water is clear". Must happen a lot. Wow. Food is super good. It is gold ole fashioned honestly cooking. The way you remember food as a kid. As a matter of fact our family used to come out here each payday Friday when I was a kid. It still has that warm feeling as when I was a kid and the food is still delicious. I had the steak and Enchiladas. Green on the steak and red on the Enchiladas so I enjoyed the best of both! We are on a road trip and like to pick restaurants using Yelp. I have never had a restaurant rated above 4 disappoint me until today. My wife ordered the Mexican Steak, an 8 oz pork steak. It was probably 1/4" thick, cooked to the consistency of jerky. I doubt it was 5oz pre cooked. I ordered a Mexican jumbo combo. The only meat choice was ground beef. It had zero seasoning. I ate a few bites and was done. The rice tasted like packaged like Knorr's. There was zero redeeming qualities to this meal. This is now the worst restaurant meal I have ever eaten. Reading back through the reviews, it appears the restaurant has changed hands in the past few months. Clear out all of the old reviews so people like me aren't misled in the future. As you cross into New Mexico from Arizona, on Interstate-40, the first major town you encounter is Gallup, a definite Route 66 town. It was time for breakfast, and there were two varieties of diners that I was looking for: a) Mexican or b) Route 66 vintage diner. As I was driving in along historic Route 66, neardowntown Gallup, I took a detour onto Coal Ave., and I noticed Gordo's Cafe. As I passed by, I just knew this fine restaurant would be today's breakfast stop. Looks like Mexican won out... My breakfast was amazingly delicious, and beautiful as pictured, but tasted even better. The beef enchiladas and the beans were covered with shredded cheese, and the eggs - I ordered them cooked over easy - were cooked perfectly. Kimmy warned me the green chili was really hot, and it was definitely spicy, but to me it was perfect, and gave my throat a warm feeling as it went "down the hatch." I mostly used it for dipping my hash browns and tortilla, and it was so delicious that I asked for a second bowl, which Kimmy cheerfully brought to me. She told me the green chili is made in-house daily, and that it's an old New Mexico recipe. I believe her, as the chili and the breakfast was delicious! Gordo's Cafe is small, unpretentious, friendly, and serves the kind of food that mom used to make. I definitely enjoyed my breakfast! I stumbled upon this small diner and am glad I did. I ate the special (Blue corn cheese enchiladas with green chile) and was glad I did. It was flavorful with the right amount of heat. Beans were a little bland but a little salt perked them up. Tina waited on me and was wonderful, friendly and cheerful. She was attentive without being annoying and my food came very quickly. Gordo's has the best chile in Gallup. They don't concern themselves with making it less spicy. It is wonderful.

We ended up here because Jerry's Place happened to be closed down. This is one of the few Mexican restaurants I have encountered where the only two kinds of meat they had are boiled chicken and ground beef. It was also a little suspicious their copious use of cheddar cheese! My 11 year old daughter thought her tostada and rice and beans were fine. But I say men! I really enjoy spicy food, so I ordered the green chili on my blue corn tortilla enchiladas.. Yes, the waiter did warn me, but this was so spicy I could barely eat it! I'm talking fire engine spicy crazy. If you are traveling through, I'd say just keep on driving. read more

This is just regular old homestyle food, real cheddar, iceburg lettuce, tomatoes, homemade tortillas and chile sauce. Nothing exotic or inventive whatsoever, but it is always fresh and tasty for what it is, and they do serve "Navajo" taco not sure if it's different from an "indian" taco because I havn't tried it. I suspect it is about the same as the rest of their fare. Their "burritos" are very simple. A steak burrito is actually just a tortilla folded in half with a steak in it. Not chopped, nothing - no other ingredients. lol Still, it was a good meat, i enjoyed eating it and if you like spicy it is intensely hot sauce. They are very accommodating and pleasant. This is the place to go if you like very very spicy homemade chile sauce and have picky kids - their menu is full of kid pleasers like chicken fingers and quesadillas, burgers, etc. No alcohol. I have to give them 4 stars because they do what they say they do, and for what it is (unpretentious homestyle folk hispanic food) they do it rather well, but if you are looking for exotic mexican, texmex, calmex, or spanish food, look elsewhere. Food was alright. Green chile was pretty spicy. I forgot New Mexico always does ground beef in there tacos, so I was sad about that. We ordered the kids a bean burrito and it was a tortilla filled with ground beef and beans in a folded tortilla with cheese on top. It looked more like a quesadilla than a burro.
