Customer service was exceptional, ensuring we had everything we needed and refill on coffee. Many locals were there to enjoy the food and appeared to be repeat customers. Pleasant environment, I especially loved the decor on the walls. The food was delicious, I had a chorizo breakfast burrito stuffed with has browns and scrambled with eggs. The burrito was smothered with my choice of green chile sauce, not spicy, however it was delicious. The whole beans served were flavorful. The other plate was the huevos rancheros with red sauce that was amazingly delicious, the kind of sauce you can eat Camarones (shrimp) à la Diabla, and the spice was just right! Passing through Gallup NM and found this little gem. Now if I hadn't looked up breakfast stops I'd would hand down NOT have stopped. DO NOT LET THE HOLE IN THE EXTERIOR Stop you!!!! Yummy! Both were extremely tasty! No regrets there. Beans were absolutely tasty- no cheese, just home cooked frijoles de olla which was seasoned to perfection. Hubby had the traditional eggs n bacon. Unlike many locally run restaurants, Sandra's Place is open on Sundays. Food is enjoyable. The red chili can use a bit more smokiness. The size of the pork steak in the breakfast menu is pigging out huge. I love the sarcastic signs on the wall. No need to shut up, keep your heads down and eat quickly. Sandra's Place was really good and I would definitely recommend it. I got the chicken fried steak and it tasted amazing. My dad got the huevos rancheros, my mom got a ham burrito with green chile on top, and my brother got New York steak and eggs. Everything we ordered was really good and we all liked our food a lot. A small place with great food. As soon as we walked in and we were greeted by hostess. We sat quickly with a party of 7. The only large table for a big party. Nice A/C inside keeping it cool. Waitress was very attentive to us and the food was hot and good. Pancakes are huge, son had chicken fried steak and I had a bite. It was really good, crispy on the outside nice and hot. After driving across 5 states and eating breakfast daily, I finally found a truly wonderful New Mexico style breakfast at Sandra's. I had a breakfast burrito smothered with half red and half green chili, stuffed with ham, egg, potato, and cheese along with a side of pinto beans. It was exactly what I was looking for. I added a flour tortilla at the end to finish up the beans and leftover sauce and almost broke into tears because the homemade tortillas were like my dad used to make. Service was fast and courteous, and while the seating area is small and very old-style diner-like, it was comfortable in both the summer and winter. I drive through Gallup 3 or 4 times a year and will be back every time I'm in town for sure. EDIT 2023: been back 2 more times and had the Huevos rancheros each time which was fantastic. It remains my number one restaurant in New Mexico. The food is wonderful and brings back so many memories. EDIT Summer 2024: got back again and had the enchiladas and eggs special. Fantastic. I recently ordered a Huevos Rancheros to go order from Sandra's and requested the chili on the side. I picked up the order and the young woman that processed my transaction handed me the order and assured me the food was made correctly and that the chili was on the side. When I delivered the order to my wife, about a half hour later I got a text message saying that there was no chili on the side. I called Sandra's to tell them about the chili. The same person that took my order told me to come in the next day with my receipt and talk to the manager. I explained what happened and was offered a serving of chili. I was expecting at least a remake of the order but that's was not the case. The food was not eaten and we figured we will not order from Sandra's anytime soon. I wouldn't recommend Sandra's if you're looking for a sit down place to eat. read more

I love older, quaint cafes on Route 66. Not much to look at on the outside, but cute decor on the inside. Clean, fairly busy and servers are hustling. Great service - which more than made up for the few-less-than-perfect moments. We stopped for breakfast and had to get an order of the French toast. It did not disappoint! I had the corned beef hash with poached eggs. One egg was perfect - the other was a little over cooked. (First world problems, right!?). There was a mix-up on the hubbys order, but they handled it promptly and perfectly! A nice pork steak with over-easy eggs and extra-crispy hash browns. Definitely worth the stop. read more

Bottom Line: Classic Route 66 "joint"!! It's old, worn, crowded with locals, friendly & fun waitresses who are very good at their job & hustle like crazy, serves vintage Americana food & vibes, and is so worth the drive to get here. Top Line: Yelpers be so right on the money!!! When I hit west Gallup NM about the time my stomach hit dead empty, I jumped onto Yelp & top listing for breakfast was Sandra's Place. I can take a hint, so stopped by and filled up on coffee (very good) & full order of french toast at cheaper than usual price. French toast was *very* strong on egg flavor. Usual vanilla notes were largely AWOL. Texture was super tender & bread was well soaked with the egg mixture. The three slices pretty much filled the platter the arrived on. Substantial carb loading! Bathroom (1 ea, universal, tiny, matching worn "no fussiness allowed" aesthetic with dining area) had only cold water from the faucet. The air hand drier did not heat. It only blew cold air. Maybe it's a test, to see if you're tough enough to deserve the finer merits of this dive. I highly recommend Sandra's Place if you are in the Gallup area & in need of feed. read more

If you are not New Mexican (yes, it's a state in the USA), you may not get the place nor the excellent flavors. We cherish our chile, not chili. Chili is for old west wagoners without a sense of taste. Whereas, the parallel to sommeliers in the great southwest are the creators and aficionados of nuance in the soil composition, rain patterns, and attention to the lovely development of seedlings to ripe red and green peppers for delicate roasting, cleaning, grinding, and tender loving creation of divinity in a sauce pan of chile sauce. That said, if you can't handle spicy, stick to pancakes, chicken steaks, and no-nonsense. But if can catch them on a good day, Sandra's has amazing Huevos Rancheros Christmas-style. Be sure to add some chorizo on the side and get the eggs over easy to enjoy the smooth silky yokes with exquisite heat of the homegrown. Everything is good. Coffee is great. But don't give the staff any gaff. You'll be in the back with the coyotes, begging for water. This is epically good food if you have the right attitude and know what you want. There can be no indecisiveness or there may be GI track hell to pay. Tourists: stick to what you know. read more

We weren't sure what to expect when we walked in, but don't let the exterior fool you, the bars on the window are to keep all that flavor in! We had the biscuits and gravy.
