This place is ridiculous. You get food, and when you ask for water or something to drink, they tell you you have to get up and go BUY some from the little grocery store that is all the way by the entrance. The food is eh, doesn't have much flavor. We ended up paying $16 a plate, and there was 4 of us yet we still had to buy drinks. Save your money go elsewhere

I traveled to NM 4-5 times for work for a couple of years ago and fell in love with the cuisine. My role at work changed and I unfortunately hadn't been able to visit in almost 3 years. So, as we drove across the country in our RV to try and mitigate Covid occurrences, I knew I had to stop. Knowing nothing about Gallup, I turned to Yelp to help me find handheld breakfast burritos along our path. La Carreta was the winner. And now we are as well! I hate that yelp reviews now include details surrounding Covid practices, but I will say La Carreta is one of the most prepared restaurant I have visited since lock down. I'm not sure if it's NM policy or just the restaurant themselves, but I was impressed. Immediately upon entering, I was prompted to sign in with my name, phone number or email, date and time of visit and if I had any symptoms. I was a little disappointed to see they had only one pen to sign. But, as soon as I turned to follow the path marked on the floor, I saw a large display with hand sanitizer! The counter had the usual plexiglass barrier and all employees I saw were wearing masks. Kudos to La Carreta on staying safe. Now, on to the burritos. Wow! Size to $ ratio already had me impressed. My wife was afraid the burritos might be small, based on the prices, but you can see from my pics, they are generously sized. I ordered a bacon egg burrito, christmas, hash browns, and cheese. My first few bites were a little underwhelming, but as I got deeper into the burrito (and the chile really), the flavors were so good. Plenty of salty bacon, complimented by mild, but pleasant heat from the chile, gooey melted cheese, balanced and filled out by the hash browns. Overall, La Carreta scratched the itch I've had since leaving NM breakfast burritos behind. I'd definitely recommend to any one passing through Gallup.

5 hungry, handsome, charming young men were on the prowl for some authentic Mexican cuisine after a week long camping trip. In the small but cozy town of Gallup, NM, these daring Texas travelers stumbled upon La Carreta, unknowingly about to have the slappiest, mouth-watering Mexican food in all of western New Mexico. Immediately greeted with a smile by Gabby the baddy, the staff and service had these five young men feelin sum typa-way. After devouring authentic Mexican food ranging from bussin brunch food to bitchin tacos, these young men left feeling orgasmic and satisfied. Giving a generous tip to reflect the excellent service, they left as mysteriously as they came. Their only critique was that the staff was too hardworking and the food was a little too good. Gabby the Baddy said everything was good, and damn good it was.

I came here based on the reviews of the birria tacos, and boy this place delivered. So, so, so good! Don't miss them, if you live here or pass through this town!

The best birria tacos! They only have them Thursday to Sunday only so I'm always getting my fix on the weekends. They taste extremely delicious with a Mexican beer :)

This location is on the Historic Route 66 Highway. I'm still in search for the best New Mexico chili and trying as many locations before leaving. I enjoyed the huevos rancheros breakfast in green chili salsa at El Rancho. While dining at El Rancho, we met a group visiting from Wales, UK in the U.S. for the World Cup turns out Josh Thomas is a professional Rugby Player in Wales they were so nice. The service was great. I bought a few souvenirs and Prickly Pear candy at their gift shop. The weather in Gallup is much nicer and cooler than it was in Rosewell. Check out this near town! Happy Yelping :)

I ordered the three dips and chips - which is a shareable appetizer. It came out almost as soon as I ordered it and since I was only the third person in the restaurant I wondered if they had a bunch pre-made in case they got busy. The guac wasn't made to order. It looked like it had been sitting out for awhile, but tasted ok. Queso was good. Salsa was decent. Chips were good but I had more tiny broken pieces than actual dip worthy chips. For dinner I chose the Rita Moreno with chicken, no sour cream and no beans. I got it "Christmas style" so I could try both green and red sauces. When it was brought to me the plate had beans on it and the enchiladas weren't even hot - they were barely warm. The cheese garnish on top was barely melted. I started with the red side. The sauce was very spicy (I love spice so no big deal for me). I wasn't a big fan of the flavor so I switched to the green side. The sauce had a decent amount of spice but way more flavorful IMO. The tiny rice scoop was decent, but again, all this food was barely warm. The waiter came by once to say sorry about the beans but a random hotel/restaurant guest that was muttering something incoherently prevented me from being able to get a refill of my soda. By the time the waiter checked in again I was over it and asked for my check. I guess I could say the appetiser met expectation but would have been much better had the guac been made to order. With all the hype this place got I expected more. There is a bar and a gift shop connected to it and a historic hotel where apparently come famous people stayed long ago. Since I'm not staying there and was there only for dinner I would have rather had a better meal experience and less hype. My advice is to keep looking unless you have it as a stop on your bucket/checklist.
