We ate food, so it gets a star. The SMALL basket of chips and salsa was good, because it left lots of room for what we ordered. The "salsa" was very watery...no substance. I asked the waitress about the salsa and she brought another small plastic cup of the same thing, but there were a couple of chile seeds in it. She explained that their salsa was made in a blender and that's why it is watery. The food took a long time to get to us and it lacked flavor. Not many restaurants are open on Sundays in Gallup. Today I had lunch at this restaurant. I have not tried before, first time. I ordered the combination plate with relleno, taco and tamale, Food is on par with other Mexican restaurants. You get food, and when you ask for water or something to drink, they tell you you have to get up and go BUY some from the little grocery store that is all the way by the entrance. I traveled to NM 4-5 times for work for a couple of years ago and fell in love with the cuisine. My role at work changed and I unfortunately hadn't been able to visit in almost 3 years. So, as we drove across the country in our RV to try and mitigate Covid occurrences, I knew I had to stop. Knowing nothing about Gallup, I turned to Yelp to help me find handheld breakfast burritos along our path. La Carreta was the winner. And now we are as well! I hate that yelp reviews now include details surrounding Covid practices, but I will say La Carreta is one of the most prepared restaurant I have visited since lock down. I'm not sure if it's NM policy or just the restaurant themselves, but I was impressed. Immediately upon entering, I was prompted to sign in with my name, phone number or email, date and time of visit and if I had any symptoms. I was a little disappointed to see they had only one pen to sign. But, as soon as I turned to follow the path marked on the floor, I saw a large display with hand sanitizer! The counter had the usual plexiglass barrier and all employees I saw were wearing masks. Kudos to La Carreta on staying safe. Now, on to the burritos. Wow! Size to $ ratio already had me impressed. My wife was afraid the burritos might be small, based on the prices, but you can see from my pics, they are generously sized. I ordered a bacon egg burrito, christmas, hash browns, and cheese. My first few bites were a little underwhelming, but as I got deeper into the burrito (and the chile really), the flavors were so good. Plenty of salty bacon, complimented by mild, but pleasant heat from the chile, gooey melted cheese, balanced and filled out by the hash browns. We ordered carne asada tacos which were delicious, beef enchiladas(I'd give it a rating of 5!), and a cheeseburger(which was good.) Red chili is hot and delicious. Chips and salsa were also tasty. This is our go to restaurant! We've lived in Gallup for five years but have lived all over the Southwest my whole life. I have tried a lot of Mexican food! If you want real homemade food, come here and you won't be disappointed. NOTHING here is canned but lovingly homemade like 'Abuela' used to make! Lunch buffet has everything you'd want, tacos, red or green enchiladas, rice, beans and all the fixings. Also, three homemade soups everyday. The best Posole in town hands down. We were there on Sunday. Service was bang-on quick. I knew we should have chosen the buffet, but we didn't want to overeat as we still had to drive to Barstow. Warren wanted to mix up his street tacos, but apparently they come prepackaged and you can't do that, so all three were chicken. He was disappointed, they were pretty boring. My carne guy actually complained there wasn't enough onion and cilantro. I think I ordered a tostada. So unmemorable I've forgotten already. I do remember I ordered chicken and it was okay. Mostly I ate the beans, lettuce and tomatoes. Summing it up: La Carreta is family, pretty funky, but obsessively clean. Food isn't memorable. People are really, really nice. Man this food is what I have been waiting for in the old G-Town for the longest. And the food is absolutely dynamite. It is really good. I've been all over Santa Fe, South Albuqerque, Havana, and Mexico. This spot is really good. But the customer service is absolute trash. You must make sure they understand what you want. And get everything that you ordered when they bring it to you because they are brain dead by default. Which is probably most of us as human beings, but these guys are professionals when it comes to forgetfulness. I don't know if they are new, really busy, or don't care. Maybe a combination of all three. Are these foul operational aspects of their business worth having to experience to get their great food? I don't know. I will come back. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Gallup. When I am in the area, I can't wait to return here to have my favorite plate of steak Quesadillas. This business is family owned and their cooking reminds me of home. I have been a regular customer since the days this restaurant was called "Salsa's". The food is great and the service has usually been good, but when you spend 45 bucks on dinner and ask for bag 5 cent to-go bag, they say they're out. The bag was for a to go order that was placed after we finished our meal. The people before and after me got a to-go bag, but because I placed an order that upset the two lady's in the back cooking, I couldn't get one. Low and behold the food spilled in my vehicle and I had refried beans every where lol.
