Can't speak to the food, only to the business plan and communication. Like seemingly just about everything else in Window Rock, Cocina de Dominguez has made an incomprensible choice of business hours. Upon finding Diné had already closed at 6:00 p.m. on a Saturday, we were told by staff that Cocina de Dominguez was open until 9:00 so we could get something to eat. Nope.

Cinco de Domingos is an excellent family-run restaurant in the Navajo Nation Capital of Window Rock. It is located within walking distance of the Quality Inn, the only hotel in town. The restaurant features mostly Mexican with some American cuisine. Chips and Salsa were complimentary, with one free refill. They were provided promptly when we were seated. The salsa was fresh, and had just the right bite to it. The special the night we were there was NY strip, two cheese enchiladas, beans, rice, and tortilla for $10.99. The obverse of the special board had Ribeye two cheese enchiladas, beans, rice, and tortilla for $12.99, so I have a feeling steak specials are offered several times a week. I ordered the special, which was very delicious. The steak was cooked to temperature, and was a thin strip. It was not particularly seasoned, but still had good flavor. The red sauce on the cheese enchiladas was also a nice blend of flavor and temperature. The rice and bean portions were a bit meager, but still had good flavor. My wife ordered the two item combo with chile relleno, enchilada and taco, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The chile pepper on the relleno had a good amount of heat to it, and she had that pleasure/pain look all through her meal. She thought it was one of the best she had eaten in some time. The children's menu offered a good selection with decent prices. It had both Mexican and American items. Our daughter got the beef taco, which she liked alot. The restaurant was about half-full on a Thursday night at dinnertime, so I suspect it gets packed on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as when any big games are on. The restaurant had about 3-4 big flatscreen TVs with various sports on. The staff is all Navajo, and they provided outstanding service. We were greeted warmly at the door, with typical Diné friendliness. The waitstaff and bussers often stopped by to offer refills or just to check if everything was ok. The restaurant also served breakfast and lunch, but we did not try them at that time. Finally, they offered a military discount for Active Duty service members. This is not surprising, as the Navajos value Military service and have a rich military tradition from WWII up to our present day wars. If you are visiting the area, and are looking to eat, I recommend you give them a try!

Food it great, Price is ok, but they are pretty busy during lunch. You have to be a little aggressive to get food right away.

The 12oz ribeye steak is tasty, but thin and a bit fatty. Still the chef manages to get the temperature medium rare to medium, which is difficult with thin pieces of meat. The salad bar is an inexpensive add-on and is fresh, although it does not have expansive choices. The rolls served with dinner were also fresh and soft. Service can be a bit slow. This last time there was on one to greet us when we came in, and we stood around for a few minutes waiting for someone to notice us. Each time we come, restaurant is not very busy, yet the server seems to disappear for long periods of time. Perhaps she smokes King Size cigarettes.

I'm having a hard time writing in this review. I was in town for the night and really wanted some…read moresort of barbecue. The one place I was going to go to was closed, and this one popped up in my feed. So I thought I would go check it out. From the exterior, it looks like a very rustic steakhouse. Gravel parking, driveway, wooden walkway, and the extra of the building looks very rustic. When you open the door, you get a totally dark red neon steakhouse vibe. It's really cool and I love the wagon, wheels and other steakhouse accoutremont adorning the walls like brands, deer, horns, etc. This is where things go a little sideways. I sat there for at least 11 minutes before anyone came up to my table. Now granted it was Father's Day but looking around the restaurant it was not that crowded and there were multiple servers. So I'm really not sure what the problem was. The host up at the front saw me just sitting there at about 11 minutes in and came up and asked if I wanted some water while I waited and I told him I would also like an iced tea. About another 5 or 6 minutes later the iced tea was delivered by this waitress. Who gave me a look like I was the biggest annoyance in the world. The only thing missing was an eye roll and a sigh. I did not have high hopes for this meal. About another 5 minutes later she came back and asked if I had decided. I went with the beef short ribs cuz they sounded good, asked about the sides and went for the french fries and asked for them to be well done. And then she left. I finished my iced tea and was sitting around waiting for someone to come up and offer me a refill but that didn't happen too much later. Now mind you, as I said there were only a few tables in my section and I saw three servers. She finally came back and asked if I would like a dinner roll. I said sure. The waiting game began again. She came by a while later and asked if I'd like another tea which I did. In a few minutes later the tea showed up. The ribs finally got to the table at about 6:34 p.m. so I've been there for over a half hour at this point. The fries were hot, but definitely not well done. The ribs were actually pretty tasty, they were juicy and had a good amount of char on them. Plus it came with a side of vegetables and the vegetables were slightly Al dente which I like. Honestly, I did not see my waitress again until the end of the meal. When I was clearly finished and asked how I was doing. I said I would like the check. I expected to wait another 10 minutes or so for that, but she was on top of getting the check to me. So I paid my bill and left. I am torn on this because the food was was good, the ambiance was off the chart but the service was severely lacking. Now I don't know how many other chores she had to do back there, but taking care of guests seem to be low on the totem pole. There was a guy across from me in a booth and I could tell he was experiencing the same thing. Bottom line? I don't know if I'll ever come through this town again, but if I do I'm probably going to try a different place for barbecue. Barbecue. Sad, cuz this place would be a total five star if they could get the service up to snuff. They have a good concept, the ambiance is awesome but as a former server I can see a lot of growth areas for this place.

I asked the waitress which was smaller the sopaipilla or the breakfast burrito? She said the sopaipilla. Holy moly. It was stuffed with thick bacon, hash browns, eggs and smothered in red and green salsa (they call it Christmas salsa). I ended up opening it and eating the inside because it was seriously enough for 2 people. Hubs had the Eye Opener. Two eggs, Christmas salsa, hash browns and bean, served with sopaipilla. He barely finished. The coffee was so good! Best place for breakfast in Gallup.

Saw a guy eating a sopapilla outside said it was good and there were several people outside waiting so we were like ok it's gonna be good. Ordered the Sopapilia covered in red sauce because it was a popular choice. Sadly, I was disappointed. I think it would have been good by itself no sauce. Just a sopapilla by itself. In sauce was too much. The red sauce did not taste homemade. If it is I'm sorry but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The kids drummettes were fried and tasty. Other than that it was just another diner. We did meet others who said they frequent but knowing true Mexican food, it's a no go for me. Service was ok. Ambiance Diner feel. We met a guy who said there was a cafe town the road that he preferred I don't remember the name but at least I know I'm not the only one who did not enjoy it. He was also from Cali so there you go. Sorry to disappoint. Good luck finding good eats. SYOY
