I purchased eyeglass frames and lenses from this business back in 2018. I don't wear glasses very often, and my prescription has remained relatively stable over the years, so I never had reason to question the lenses. At my recent annual eye exam, I had the 2018 glasses checked because I was considering updating them, and I was surprised to learn that both lenses in those glasses have the exact same prescription. The issue is that my eyes have not had the same prescription since I was a child, so there is no reason these lenses should have matched. Unfortunately, it appears the glasses were made incorrectly from the beginning. I understand some responsibility falls on me for not having the glasses checked sooner since I rarely wear them, but I'm still very disappointed that I paid for lenses that were not made accurately in the first place. I would have expected better quality control and attention to detail from an eyewear business. read more

Grand central optical is outstanding. The employees are so helpful from finding frames in line with my style preferences and that fit perfectly. The optometrist appointments are so easy to schedule. It is conveniently located near grand central and my work. I fell and destroyed my last pair of glasses, and amazingly because of the lab onsite, I can get my new glasses same day versus waiting for weeks, which is amazing because I'm going on vacation shortly. My daughter had a 4pm appointment and was done by 4:20. She said she spent the first 5 minutes filling out paperwork. My VSP has a $60 contact lenses copay for exam. There is no way she had an eye exam. I have been to plenty of eye appointments and never have I head of an appt being 20 minutes. I called the office as she was charged $68. I asked them in they were in network and the woman who answered said they were "preferred". They are misrepresenting themselves using different wording. Shame on them for taking advantage of my 25 yr old daughter. I guess that is what to expect in the Big City. Next time we will wait until she is home for a visit. This office is fantastic! I did not wait long for my examination and to pick out glasses! Dr Bablin was attentive and personable. Jordan was knowledgeable and patient(helping me find frames and measuring my face while in the phone with a disgruntled customer)! Wow! That is above and beyond! When I went back to pick up my glasses a woman (I'm sorry did not get name) helped me. She was very helpful and gave me a little bag with wipes and liquid cleaner and gave me a great case for my sunglasses. I also picked up everyday glasses. Thanks again!! read more

We had a great experience with Jordan at Grand Central Optical. We are visiting NYC from California and leaving today for a vacation in Italy. My husband broke a frame of his glasses last night and elegantly used some tape to keep the frame in place as he wouldn't see anything without his glasses. By chance we stopped by the Grand Central Optical to ask if they could fix the frame (after LensCrafters said "no"). Jordan undid the tape and went to their lab to see if the frame could be fixed. 10 minutes later he was back with the frame back in tact. And he didn't charge us for the service! Time is money and I was not able to use mine efficiently at this facility. They don't tell you in advance, so I am telling you here. They don't complete routine dilations with the vision exam. On top of that, they failed to schedule my second visit for the dilation with sufficient time before closing. Now I have to come back a third time to complete the exam. Next time I'm going elsewhere, so I can complete my standard exam in a single visit, like I have done every other place I have had my eyes checked for the past 27 years! read more

This place doesn't deserve any stars. This was the worst experience. I was rushed into purchasing a pair of reading glasses that were way overpriced. More than one salesperson tried to sell me additional lenses that I didn't need. Overall, It was overwhelming with all of the different recommendations for things that I really didn't need and I ended up paying $500 for a simple pair of reading glasses. Do your homework before coming here, I asked for a refund and was told afterwards they don't give refunds only a store credit. read more

I've been looking for a local eye doctor near work and I'm glad I've found Grand Central Optical. I've been coming for more than a year and have seen a couple of their doctors which all were very patient and easy going. I specifically recall a visit with a very nice female doctor where she meticulously took my eye exam and gave detailed pointers on how long I should be wearing my contacts and which contacts were best given my line of work. I only had 30 minutes in between meetings and the whole process was surprisingly quick. Not a terrible location - I've visited 3 different optometrists at this location, all of whom I've had a pleasant experience with. My most recent visit was to get a contact lens exam, which I thought my eye care provider covered in full, but apparently not, as I still had to pay out-of-pocket for it. The woman at the counter explained to me why I needed to pay, but I still didn't understand as I had read my benefits prior to choosing this place (and again now), which claimed that my contact lens exam is covered in full once every calendar year. Unfortunately, I was running late (I came during my lunch hour), and she had already spent a good 10-15 mins on the phone validating my insurance, so I just accepted my fate and paid. Turns out my last prescription was no good - I was prescribed daily contacts (my fault, I asked for them), but I hated how flimsy they were, so I needed to make a follow-up appointment for the Bi-Weekly's. This time, my visit was a lot quicker, and I ended up seeing a different optometrist than the one from my previous visit. Apparently, my original prescription was completely wrong, and after a quick exam, it was determined that it was stronger than it should've been. I realize eye prescriptions are relatively subjective, but nearly every part of my prescription was different than that of the original...strange, but okay. Anyway, I got a revised prescription. Although the doctors were nice, and it's close to where I work, I don't think I'll come back here just because of the whole insurance mix-up. read more

Grand Central Optical is the best in the business!! Eye exams are always quick, professional and painless and after purchasing both my contact lenses and eyeglasses there, I'm undoubtedly a customer for life. I purchased new glasses there a couple weeks ago and after realizing I wasn't a fan of the look and fit of them, I called this past Friday to see if I can exchange them for a different pair. They said that's no problem at all and when I went into the office 20 minutes later, I was greeted by Jordan (I believe one of the optometrists) who helped me pick out another pair. I assumed they would be ready Monday but he assured me that he wanted me to have them for the weekend and that they would be done by 5:00 (it was 3:00 at that time). I received a call at 4:40 that the glasses were finished with my brand new anti-glare lenses and I couldn't be happier with the fit and look! I sincerely appreciated the sense of urgency and attention to detail by this great family-owned business and I've honestly never been to an optometrist that could get glasses done even in the same day much less within 2 hours! Unfortunately, they do not receive more than one star from me for the following reasons: (1) rather than have one complete a form in private, their intake process is to ask sensitive and confidential information such as name, address, social, employer, and DOB at the eyeglass display counter within earshot of other customers / patients (2) after I arrived there, they informed me that the doctor with whom I booked the appointment was out of the office and that another doctor would see me. I came in here this week to get a new perscription for glasses and contacts, and to get new glasses. I'm in shock at the first reviewers experience, and that anyone could give this place one-star. Everyone was super friendly, the doctor was great, and she was very patient and gave me great advice on contacts and glasses. The man that helped me with the frames was really patient as well. I have Davis Vision, and he helped advise on what would be the most bang for my buck, and helped me pick out lenses and frames. Love my glasses! Between the two, they carry just about every snazzy brand of rims you could ever need. The staff is super nice and friendly, and will be honest in helping you pick a pair that look good for your individual features. I have been a customer of Grand Central Optical for more than 15 years now. It is an AMAZING place and I recommend none other. I purchase EVERYTHING from Grand Central Optical - progressive eyeglasses, readers, contact lenses, and sunglasses. The staff is so professional and helpful, but more importantly, honest. They just know by looking at your face what is best suited for you. The eye doctors are exceptional. I personally owe much gratitude to Dr. Block as he saved my eyesight! He noticed I had an optic nerve issue, which I looked into and have seen been diagnosed with glaucoma. Thankfully, it is being treated but if not for Dr. Block I never would have known. My main concern is where will I go when I retire out of New York in a few years? I trust no one except Grand Central Optical's staff and doctors. The Madison Ave location is at 369 Madison (between East 45th-46th Sts) but my personal favorite is the Grand Central location, Lexington Passage. Greg and his staff are EXCEPTIONAL. I have been a customer of Grand Central Optical for years. Even after relocating from the New York Area I have often sent my old glasses there with my new prescriptions. Why? They have better optical quality than any other company I have used, including small private offices. My prescription is very difficult to get right, as I'm very astigmatic and near sighted. Of course this is complicated as I get older and need progressive lenses. If even the base curve is off or the prescription is off by the slightest bit, it still meets ansi standards but they won't work for me. Grand Central Optical has consistently filled my prescriptions, not just by ansi standards but with amazing optical quality. When I can return to New York City I love to go in there. While I have a very hard time finding glasses that fit me, as my eye brows are low and usually show in most glasses, their staff are experts in picking out modern stylish frames that fit me and look good. I notice that their optical employees work there for years. Of course, you can go to a "schlock house" and get cheaper glasses, they may meet ansi standards, but Grand Central Optical gets my difficult prescriptions right on and uses cutting edge optical products. In the rare situation where it's not perfect, even when it was not their fault and my prescription changed, they always made sure my needs were met. I recommend Grand Central Optical if you want superior optics and style. read more

I happened upon this store while looking for the Warby Parker that's located in Grand Central. I've never had to use glasses before and got a prescription for lenses and was looking for frames and totally open to where I would get them. I heard decent things about Warby Parker--hence why I wanted to stop by to check out what the store/frames were like. When I asked someone working at Grand Central Optical if they carried the glasses (because I really wasn't sure if Warby Parker was a separate store or something Grand Central Optical carried) the person immediately dismissed me and said, "oh no, we make real glasses here". I'm sorry, very snooty attitude. I would have taken a look at the glasses at Grand Central Optical if I had a better reaction to that question and maybe some guidance. Customer service is everything.
