Over time, a patina of cynicism and depression has settled over this place. I don't feel like anyone who works there wants to be there, likes people (never mind liking customers) or cares about doing a good job. I could deal with staff being morose and allergic to smiling if it wasn't also accompanied by a general shadiness that leaves me demoralized and feeling taken advantage of. Nothing has a price on it and she won't show you anything without first asking, Well, how much are you looking to spend? She looks over the glasses and you can see the wheels in her head turning as she considers how much she is going to try and charge you. She'll then quote you a price, offer a discount and then conveniently forget the discount when it comes to time to ring you up. She will try and convince you every single lens treatment is a must have, even the ones like a filter for blue light the efficacy of which is very much open to debate. Getting a copy of your prescription is like getting a work permit from the French government (even though it's your right!). I get a more ethical vibe from street vendors! To top it off, the selection here is terrible. They cannot answer even the most basic questions about the benefits offered by your health plan. When you ask, 'Is there any way you could look that information up?' she emits a soul destroying sigh to protest you interrupting her sedentariness. There is just a general carelessness to everything they do. They try to send you out with your new glasses without a case for them. They don't call you when your glasses are ready. I called them and they told me the glasses had arrived three days earlier! They often make you wait unreasonably long for scheduled appointments. I had to wait for 30 minutes once to get frames adjusted because the optometrist wouldn't do it and the only other staff member was "running an errand". They sent me home once with the wrong prescription! read more

It's a shame I'm obligated to give a star bc it should be zero. Perhaps they were once good, but some of these recent reviews must be fake insider buddies or something. Extremely basic exam for glasses. Two lines that's it. Optometrist was short & uncommunicative. Glasses still giving me a slight headache after a long break-in, which indicates the Rx is off. Went elswhere for full proper eye exam/Rx & now all is well. Receptionist/assistant lady is just nasty. Nasty attitude, obnoxious way of communicating & a real see-you-next-tuesday. I've also read after the fact, that they treat ppl with public health insurance judgingly & with condescension. While I was waiting, I overheard an innapropriate convo she had with a patron about a train delay bc a person was on the tracks. She said they should've left them on the tracks (the connotation being to let them get run over by the train) because "those ppl can't be rehabilitated." What? Gross! I asked for a copy of my PD & prescription & she made a face & told me she'd email them. I knew she wouldn't & she didn't. Upon picking up my specs weeks later, I asked again -- and of course, again with the resting you-know-what face in response. And, again with the email lie. I didn't leave until I got it on paper, but she made sure to whimper something about how they're not responsible if I use my Rx & PD to order glasses elswhere bc "every place does things different & we can't be blah blah blah..." WHAT? So zero confidence in your work, Ok, gotcha. And that was my 1st & last time going to some dinky optometry store instead of a complete exam & proper Rx by an ophthalmologist with optometry services through my PCP. So unprofessional -- what a bummer. I was there about two weeks ago to select frames (I spent about 30 minutes looking at different frames when, by the way, the lady in the back mocked me for how long I was taking). I was very specific, and consistent, in all-black frames. I came back to then pick up the frames I selected. To my shock and dismay, they were completely different frames -- some white tie-die marble as the side hangers of the frame. I looked at the man who helped and I told him this isn't what I ordered. His first response was that he remembered what I picked and this was it. I said, okay, in that case - please show me the actual frame that I tried on and picked. He went scattering through the entire cabinet and, oh, look at at that - he couldn't find it. (Confirming the obvious - I did not pick those frames.) In any case, it seemed to have been some insurance hiccup and then all of a sudden the administrative lady comes back and starts barking tell me to calm down and not get excited and I was shocked because I wasn't even speaking to her. And she just kept inserting herself into the conversation which was so unnecessary (perhaps she needed something to do?). Now I have to wait some time before I can go back to get my glasses. I did take a photo of what I selected so that I'm not once gain told that I picked something I didn't. Glad they were finally able to just realize it was some insurance error - did not appreciate they acting like it was my mistake and that I had to just take those (incorrect, hideous) frames that were there. Will update this review accordingly as I, unfortunately, have to now go back again to pick up my frames. Just moved to this area and was hoping for this to be my go-to glass spot, but now there is just no way.. bummer. read more

Helpful but extremely overpriced on the frames. Misleading in price information. The sales person kept telling me my frames cost $250 and after the fact, I find out they charged me $350. He says he assumed I knew he was referring to the $100 my insurance would pay. I found that extremely misleading. I would buy $350 for simple reading glasses frames, especially when I know the same frames are at the most $230 at other retailers and $125 online. Very dissatisfied with the way they did business. Friendly desk staff however when I asked about my PD and other questions, he Doc didn't respond. Plus though I was already inside the eye testing room, they told me to come out so that they could serve other patients. Bit unprofessional on their part! Update after owner's google response (attached): it was not Covid protocol. I had appointments for 2:30pm. Around 2:55pm, doctor took me in. I had to use restroom and when I came out- the lady was right there in fort of restroom door and told me to go out side and wait so that they serve the other customer. Was this professional? P. S. I dropped the star from 2 to 1. And please know above all Honesty is the best Policy : ) Update 2 Call: A lady called and she told she will cancel my order by calling by insurance due to this review. She said I lied (also on recorded line) however her CCTV will prove other wise. She lies. We know I am right. I arrived around 2:27pm for 2:30pm. I always keep my eyes on my watch. Please kindly check the your own cctv footage. Or can I get the copy of the cctv of my visit? Update 3 (after owner response): you may be able to prove who is right or wrong by looking into your own cctv. I might have smiley face does not mean I was satisfied. In my culture it's an offense to cut others line... time in time of the life. Please don't cancel the order else I may have to report to appropriate agency too. The owner sent me a legal letter to threaten me because I gave a bad review based on my experience. Such a nasty trick! I have a reason to doubt if this is what they did to other customers who gave bad reviews to keep their ranting on social media. Also, a few days ago the owner sent me a private message saying they are a small business in a difficult time and she is a single mom with 3 kids. I have decided to let it go because I think this may not be easy for them. But at the meanwhile, she just deleted her previous rude comments and replaced by something professional with a reasonable tone. And then sent me a legal letter to threaten me to delete bad reviews. Such a double-faced person! Here are some facts: 1. What I stated in my reviews and comments are 100% true and accurate 2. I was not aware of any of the risk before the adjustment 3. I'm not asking for free nor take advantage of them. I offered a $300 payout ($430 with my insurance). 4. Both frame and lenses were recommended by the staff 5.They required $477 after discount ($600 in total with insurance). Pros: It's in the neighborhood down the street from me and the doctors are competent and nice and the younger staff I interacted with is nice. Cons: I've been going here for a few years...today was the first time I've talked to Marina Kleyman, the owner, and I'm NEVER COMING BACK. She CUT ME OFF while I'm still talking (AND REPEATEDLY DO SO IN A RAISED VOICE) and did not grasp the concept of empathy for the patient--she doesn't understand why a patient would want to have more affordable brands on their prescription! Needed an eye exam, my first ever, and a coworker recommended this place as it's close to our office. The process to set up an appointment was very quick and easy. I placed a call to the office and the attendant that answered the phone was SUPER nice and helpful. We landed a time on a Tuesday since they have later hours on Tuesdays. I showed up a bit early for my appointment and filled out the new customer paperwork while I waited. The person working in the shop (presumably the same person who answered the phone) was even more helpful in person. She explained pretty much everything to me and let me know what my options were based on my insurance. I tried on a few pair of frames while waiting for the Optometrist. When the optometrist arrived, I was taken in the back area for the exam. It was quick and easy. The optometrist didn't speak much while administering the exam, which I wish he would have as it was my first exam, but he did clearly explain the diagnosis. After about 15 mins the exam was done I was on my way with an electric copy of my prescription in my email. They did have a few style of frames that I liked, but they seemed (to me, a newbie) to be a bit expensive. But I have been known to have expensive taste. read more

This place is worse than the DMV. You walk in and it's like the life is sucked out of you. Customer service is shameful. Typically when a person enters your store with a smile and an afternoon greeting you'd show friendliness in return. Not here. Just rude responses like you're a burden. I was "helped" by two women, both of which seemed full of resentment. Indicators of unhappiness in the workplace. They probably need a raise and a hug. I have been going here for almost 8 years now. I have always had reasonably good experiences. The owner seemed knowledgeable and helpful... but I don't know...maybe ownership changed? After today, I am 1000% never setting foot in there again. I went for my yearly exam. Something that has always been covered with my $10 copay. When I got there, I was told it would be $130 for the exam. I was confused but rather than argue, I went back to work and called my provider. They said I was indeed covered for one exam every 12 months. I called back and spoke to the same woman. I explained that I spoke to my provider and I was getting conflicting info and asked if she could help get to the bottom of it. well, here's where the fun starts: She asked to put me on hold...but she never hit the hold button. I got to hear a conversation between her, her work associate...heck, I could hear the person she was talking to on another phone. She said that I was angry and calling her a liar (completely false). They even talked about how they had my record of me never paying more than a $10 copay. I got a good 5 full minutes of them coming up with something to tell me/ saying I was lucky to have never paid more than $10 etc etc. It was embarrassing, disrespectful and most of all disgraceful. I would never give another dime to a place like that. Im a reasonable person. Insurance is tricky and sometimes there are little issue you need to deal with...but for me to treat someone respectfully only to be belittled while they think you're on hold is truly classless. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Manahttan Eyeworks. I've been a customer at the Hell's Kitchen location for the past three years, and they've always been super quick with my yearly eye exams and they always make sure my insurance works. At other places I've had to wait WEEKS for my contacts to come in, at Manhattan Eyeworks it's just a few days! I also have a favorite pair of sunglasses that break all the time. Had a great experience and would recommend you to their services. Not sure about pricing compared to other shops, but I didn't feel like it was over the top. Dealing with Dr. Andrew Salzan and his staff will leave you feeling scammed and helpless. All the red flags were there, but I ignored them because I was in a hurry to get my exam done right before the Christmas Holiday. After my exam, I was disappointed to find out that their frames selection is extremely small and limited. So I was forced to take the prescription from them and go somewhere else for the frames. To my shock, when I received the eyeglasses they were the WRONG prescription! Doctor Andrew Salzan had written me the wrong prescription!! So I call Manhattan Eyeworks and ask them for a refund since by this time I had moved to NJ and don't come to the city often. They DO NOT apologize, and proceed to tell me that there is nothing that they can do for me other than ask me to make the trip up to NYC during the week. I work during the week! I asked if I could go to their Chelsea location on the weekend, they said that they are a franchise and have no association with the Chelsea location other than the sign outside their door. It has been 6 weeks since my eye exam and I'm still wearing my old broken eyeglasses because of this unprofessional institution. Avoid Manhattan Eyeworks at all cost. read more

I searched on my health insurance's website to find an optical that accepts my insurance and located close to my job. The results showed Manhattan Eye Works. I called to make an appt. and was able to make an appt. for the same week. I arrived about 10 minutes early which worked out perfect because it gave me plenty of time to choose the frames that I liked best. When I arrived, there were 2 patients ahead of me but I didn't have to wait long to see the doctor. The staff was very helpful and friendly with helping me choose the frames that looked best. The eye exam was quick. I received a phone call about a week later when my Rx glasses were ready for pick-up. I liked that this location opens late on some weekdays which made it easier for me since I walked there from my job. read more

Dr Salzan gave a professional eye exam , but better yet was patient and helpful during my bout with indecision. My 2 year old frames, that I adore, had gotten so wide that they were slipping off my face whenever I looked down so I knew I needed to do something before they shattered all over the subway next time I looked down at my phone. I wandered into this place in the middle of the day and just sadly showed the woman working the counter the frames. She warned me that adjustments were at my own risk and then set to work molding them back into shape with heat. The process took only a couple of minutes. She then told me to try them on and see how they felt - and they were perfect! She also invited me to come back anytime that they started to loosen. Most shocking of all - absolutely free of charge! I'm very grateful that I don't need to buy new frames now because of the adjustment, but next time that I do, I'll definitely come here because of the customer service. The true definition of a neighborhood shop. I was walking by one afternoon and remembered it was time for another eye exam - which they did immediately. The staff knows the frame to match your face (thankfully, bec up to this point my frame knowledge was RayBan aviator sunglasses). I'd give it 0 star if I could. The doctor bumped my prescription from a 7.75 to 8.5 and caused extreme eye fatigue. He only used 1 machine and the reading test, which caused that wrong test result. What's more, I'm 28 and after 24, your eyes are supposed to stabilize and won't handle that big of a jump. I had to go to another doctor which gave me a different prescription and downgraded it to 8. Also the attitude of this eye doctor is awful. He thinks that screen use causes permanent effect on eyesight, which is not true. read more

The eye doctor Dr Peter LaCorde (if I spelled it correctly) is great and very thorough. I would say the customer service side needs improvement. It's like your bothering the ladies at the desk by asking a question. They don't even look at you when you talk to them. There's nothing wrong with being polite. I had one of the worst and most bizarre experiences of my life in this store. I had gone here a year and a half ago and there was a young woman who was very helpful and they take my insurance so I went back. This time there was a middle-aged woman who immediately started asking me what kind of "lenses" I wanted. When I showed her my prescriptions and said they were for far and desktop glasses she got extremely irritated and started again insisting that she the prescription didn't matter, she needed to what "lenses" I wanted. She did not offer to explain what the options for "lenses" were and I had no idea what she was talking about. Very, very strange. I put up with this for a few minutes because I just wanted to get this done but she refused to back down and got more and more irritated for some unknown reason. So finally I just said I wasn't ready and started to walk out. Then, if you can believe it, she figured out my husband is Russian because his first name is uniquely Russian and then she started speaking to my husband in Russian complaining about me and telling him how I wouldn't tell her what "lenses" I wanted. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED SUCH A RUDE SALESPERSON and I am at a complete loss to understand why she went off on me. There was another customer in there before me, a young man, who she was decent to. SO STAY VERY VERY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! This woman is scary! read more

Marina did everything in one day, got eye doctor exam with different tests, all the measurements and choosing a frame. Finally I got my glasses and cannot be happier. My experience here was mixed, but overall fairly negative. My first trip here to try and secure contact lenses was pleasant. I had called in advance, but it turns out that I didn't need to, plenty of people were just walking in with a bit of minimal wait. Service was very friendly (I spoke to Ashley and Dr. Kim). I got fitted for contacts (I'm not sure that the prescription was right for me, but they asked me to return for eye dilation free of charge, so I figured I'd talk about it then). After that, my experience has been a mess. I've been trying to go for literally two months now, sometimes by calling in, sometimes just when I have time. The doctor is only in three days a week. Apparently getting to see him is rather difficult after 5, and forget about it if you generally work past 6. Eye dilation (as cited by Dr. Kim and others at the store itself) should only take 30-45 minutes, but this time period has been upped every time I've gone to try to see a doctor (45 minutes... 1 hour.. make an appointment before 5 to see the doctor). I've made a couple appointments (which I was told was okay upon calling, for 6:30 (not enough time..) and then at 6:00 (not enough time..) and now have just resorted to trying to show up at random times, hoping to snipe a doctor. My sample monthlies are long broken, and were blurry in the first place. Can't. See. Anything. Maybe that was the trick. +1 star for the friendliness upon initial visit. read more

This store discriminates against people with service dogs. I tried to make an appointment for my mother and when I told the woman answering the phone that she had a service dog, I was informed the animal was "unhygienic" and "not allowed in the exam room". I was also told the staff has severe allergies and they didn't want the "animal" coming. She was extremely rude. I've provided a link below detailing the law regarding service dogs. Limited selection for prescription glass frames. They are much more expensive than other glass shops I've been before. Their contact lenses are about twice the amount else where. I don't know how this place is still in business. I definitely would not go back if they were giving out glasses by the truck load! Also, the lady who works there is so rude and not helpful at all. She is very argumentative regardless of reason or whether it is legitimate. I came into this store twice and it's not a welcoming place. Both times I was there, there were customers arguing with the ladies out front. The only reason I came here was because other places were booked when I needed an exam. Terrible customer service. Overpriced. Extremely NO BUENO!! Update : 2/6/2015 Since Manhattan Eyewear wants to get into my story, I will share so you all run as far from this place as possible. Couple hundred frames are nothing compared to places that have thousands!!! And the frames here are so dated! My main frustration is not with my insurance, I know how much allowance the plan provides (by the way before this place can even tell me in the first place), but with this terrible ran place. 1. OVERPRICED - FACT:: half year supply of Biofinity is $120. Online such as vision direct $50 to $70). 2. Different staff will tell you different inaccurate information and at the end, you are the negatively impacted. FACT:: if I wasn't told that my insurance would cover the full year of contacts based on how this place priced the lenses, I would have taken the contact prescription and bought it else where.
