When I called to schedule my appointment at J.L., the receptionist was very polite and professional. Dr. Stoica has such a soft-spoken and caring demeanor and she is an expert in what she does. Tristan at James Leonard has literally changed the way I I purchase glasses. I don't think I'd go anywhere else for any less service. He is an excellent optician. I came in with some glasses that I've had for some time and wanted to have lenses added to. I also already had my prescription from my regular eye doctor elsewhere but new regulation at that office was that they couldn't fit lenses to frames they don't sell. Well James showed me and explained to me why, my lenses are beautiful and maybe just not the right fit for eyeglasses. Great visit! I don't do glasses, cuz I don't need em, see? Certain professionals MAY suggest that I MAY see CERTAIN things a LITTLE more clearly with a pair of spectacles but that's just not who I am man. So I came mainly to make sure I don't have eye cancer or anything else nasty lurking around in there. My eye exam was performed by Dr. Irina Stoica who is an absolutely lovely woman! She has an excellent bedside manner, very kind. She's also very articulate, and explains everything she is doing and why in a very accessible way. Additionally, she's got a great sense of humor, and we spent most of the exam laughing and making jokes with each other. I wish every doctors visit was like this! The business itself is clean, bright, and very welcoming. It may look small, but even when it got a little crowded the operation moved like clockwork and no one skipped a beat. The staff behind the counter was just as lovely as Dr. Stoica (pulling out chairs for patients and chatting adorably with little old ladies coming to pick up their lenses). If glasses are your thing, I felt they had a nice selection ranging from conservative, minimalist frames to some really fun colorful and retro style frames. Highly recommend! read more

I'll admit that when faced with all of the high-quality frame and lens options at James Leonard that it was slightly intimidating to wade through all of the choices on offer. But I've quickly come to trust Tristan and Eugene's recommendations, on both frame manufacturer and lens features. I brought in a pair of white Ray-Bans needing progressive lenses. Note: Not all progressive lenses are created equal. My old pair of glasses are Pradas, equipped with what I thought were perfectly fine progressive lenses, but for these Ray-Bans that I brought in, Tristan recommended the Zeiss (same manufacturer of high-spec camera lenses) progressive lenses, which feature a wider view with zero distortion. These lenses are also designed to filter out computer screen glare, so I'm looking forward to reaping the benefits from this feature. Short version: I thought the adjustment from my old glasses to my new ones would take some adjustment, but it was a seamless transition. To be honest these lenses are a real game-changer. Meanwhile, when I returned to pick up these new glasses, in speaking with Eugene I learned quite a lot about some changes in the eyewear industry (such as how Alain Mikli no longer designs the Alain Mikli line of frames. No wonder their frames are so trashy now!) Anyway, I'll make sure to consult this team before making my next frame purchase. I should also mention the thorough and in-depth eye exam I had with Dr. Stoica, who was knowledgeable and very informed about topics like thinning retinas, how prescriptions and health may affect ocular health, etc. Very positive experience. I have a terrible eye for what will look good on me, and he was a tremendous help. He's honest about what does and doesn't look good, and helps accentuate what you like most about your face. He also had a great idea about turning an old pair of frames into prescription sunglasses. Since COVID, I haven't been into Manhattan and when I saw my lenses had an issue, I wasn't sure how to work it out. They were great and said it was no problem at all for me to mail the glasses in, they'd fix them, and mail them back to me. I'm really grateful for that care and accommodation. I went to get my annual eye exam done about a week ago. This was my first time at this office since moving. When I first walked in I was greeted by the staff and was sat right away and given some hand sanitizer. I was asked a few questions before the optometrist called me in. For my eye exam the optometrist was very kind, patient, and knowledgeable. She explained everything about my eyes to me and why certain things were the way they were. I've never had an optometrist do this for me before. She asked me questions about why my current prescription wasn't working for me (besides it changing). I had explained that my eyes felt like they were straining more now since I am WFH and in front of a computer screen now more than before. She came up with a prescription that would not only take care of my regular needs, but accommodate my new situation while working from home. After my exam I was taken out to the front so I can try on frames. The lady that worked with me was very flexible with me in trying to find the perfect frame. We'd try one frame and I'd say what I liked about it and what I didn't like and she'd find a new option based on my feedback. I didn't feel rushed in trying to find a frame and she let me try on as many as I wanted until we found the right frame. I received my new frames today (8 days later) and I love them and I'm so happy with them! I've been working on my computer all day and not once have I felt like I had to strain my eyes. I found James Leonard Opticians randomly as it was near my office and they accepted my insurance. I was 26 years old with little to no experience with glasses and less than zero experience with contacts. I had been wanting to get contacts for a while as I am around 20/50 in both eyes, but had been scared off multiple times by other opticians and was always HIGHLY squeamish about my eyes (never had been able to touch my eye or even put in eye drops). Dr. Stoica, quite literally, changed my life by being extremely, extremely patient with me throughout the contact training process and sticking with me every step of the way until I was FINALLY (after about 6 1-hr trainings) able to put in/take out the lenses. I never believed I would be able to do it; but she did and she never quit on me. I now see close to 20/20 and couldn't be happier. She was very professional the whole way through and allowed me to try multiple prescriptions/lens sizes until we found the perfect ones. I highly recommend JLO and Dr. Stoica to anyone looking for vision care, but especially to those who may be considering getting contact lenses. She is real master of her craft and caters to her patients needs to the fullest degree.
