I had a great experience at James Leonard Opticians. From the moment I walked in, the staff was welcoming, professional, and genuinely focused on providing exceptional service. A special thank you to Dr. Crisostomo for performing such a thorough and comprehensive eye exam. She took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all of my questions, and made me feel completely confident in my eye care. I also want to recognize Liza, who was absolutely fantastic in helping me find the perfect pair of frames. She was patient, knowledgeable. She made the entire process enjoyable and helped me choose frames that fit both my face and my personality. Thank you, Dr. Crisostomo and Liza, for making this such a great experience! -Stephen read more

Needed to replace my eyeglasses lenses for a new prescription. Friendly and knowledgeable service; glasses were ready when when promised and they made sure fit was perfect before letting me out the door. I needed progressive lenses to fit my Bevel frames. They were able to handle everything even though I think they don't carry that brand of frame. read more

6 years/5 apartments/4 years away overseas later... I am still super nearsighted. I remembered how I had such a great experience at James Leonard Opticians 6 years ago, so figured I'd book my eye exam there and see how my terrible eyesight is doing (also, the DMV has been hounding me to submit my vision exam...) Stopped by after work (super grateful they have time slots for 6pm)- Dr. Stoica was very professional and personable, and took time to explain how my eyes are doing. She provided me with a referral to another specialist who could help me with an eye condition that's been on the horizon (like that hazy little house you see during the eye exam...!), so will hit them up next on my journey to not so terrible vision. Just great customer service across the board- if you're looking for an optometrist/glasses/contact lenses/a vision test for the DMV so they stop sending you guilt inducing reminder emails, look no further. read more

As always there was excellent customer service at James Leonard Opticians. The selection of frames were so diverse, unique, and most importantly are beautifully designed. I truly appreciate the time and effort that went into the process of finding the right pair for me. I didn't feel rushed and the staff was extremely knowledgeable and patient. Will definitely return again soon: The staff was going above and beyond my expectations for COVID precautions which made me feel comfortable and at ease. All frames were sanitized and the whole process was smooth from beginning to end. read more

James Leonard Opticians - My new Face a Face glasses. Thank you Tristan! - Eyewear & Opticians Near Me - New York City, New York

I'm so happy that I found James Leonard Opticians here on Yelp! My last optometrist experience on the UWS in 2021 was disappointing despite finding eyeglass frames that I loved. When I called to schedule my appointment at J.L., the receptionist was very polite and professional. Dr. Stoica has such a soft-spoken and caring demeanor and she is an expert in what she does. She provides recommendations that will suit her patients' individual needs and budget. I ordered contact lenses from here and they made sure I had enough trial lenses to last until my delivery arrived. Their selection of frames is also impressive. Tatiana was so patient and considerate when I was trying on different eyeglasses. I will continue being their customer while I am living in the UES! Highly recommend! read more

Tristan at James Leonard is hands-down the best resource to have at your side when choosing a new pair of glasses. I was drawn to this place by all the amazing Yelp reviews a few weeks ago while deciding on where to purchase my new pair of frames. I normally don't wear my glasses often because I never liked the way I looked with them as I did without them but I honestly love my new pair of frames so much it's no longer an accessory (and necessity to see) but also a part of my personality. I probably went to 5 different optical shops in the span of one week (yes, I'm a maximizer and want to make sure I'm really making the right decision when choosing to invest in something as important as a pair of glasses), and I have to say I should have stopped looking for a pair after James Leonard had been my first stop. Tristan new exactly which pairs would complement my face shape, but also my skin tone, hair color, and lifestyle. After going through probably 5 stores and 30+ frames I finally settled on the first one that Tristan had recommended to me in the beginning - I should have never doubted him. The selection at James Leonard is absolutely incredible, and Tristan was very kind and patient to me throughout the entire process. I could not be happier with my purchase! read more

Staff that is not only extremely well-versed in the word of optometry but also polished, professional and friendly. I was able to get an excellent pair of frames that fit my face beautifully. The employees here took the time to recommend what colors would work best with skin. They explained face shapes and which frames fit best for different ones (I'm a square head)! The frames they have are of quality and they carry a wide variety. I was going to VisionWorks but there I felt like a number with a staff that only seemed interested in making money. I have always felt a customised experience tailored to me with care. Heading to my optometry appointment today (1/30/2021) and I have no question that I will not be disappointed. There's a reason I travel from Brooklyn for them. You will never look at glasses the same! P.S. I made and was immediately greeted with friendliness by the doctor and the front staff. Never change James Leonard!!! read more

Pardon the pun, but this shop is an eye opener. Visiting from CA and dropped in. Amazing store with unique designer frames from around the globe. Had the great pleasure of working with the skilled Tatiana who helped locate a particular frame from Barcelona. I have since returned-ordered glasses from afar via email and phone. Biggest difference with this shop over others is the lens quality. They use Zeiss and the clarity difference over online retailers is significant. Run to this store; you won't regret it read more

Tristan at James Leonard has literally changed the way I I purchase glasses. I don't think I'd go anywhere else for any less service. He is an excellent optician. I came in with some glasses that I've had for some time and wanted to have lenses added to. I also already had my prescription from my regular eye doctor elsewhere but new regulation at that office was that they couldn't fit lenses to frames they don't sell. Well James showed me and explained to me why, my lenses are beautiful and maybe just not the right fit for eyeglasses. He was able to showed me beautifully shaped and colored frames that were never anything I'd go for, but definitely fit my face much better. Sidebar: the original frames I brought with me are being turned into prescription sunnies. I'm happy, I feel the frames we picked are gorgeous and I can't wait to wear them everywhere and get a million compliments ;) read more

Tristan is the absolute best at what he does! He is very knowledgeable about glasses and lenses, and also a really sweet and helpful person. He has excellent taste and always suggests frames that complement my face shape and hair. My last three pair of glasses I bought were ones that Tristan recommended and I love all of them and still wear them. I will not buy my glasses from anyone else but Tristan! I totally trust his knowledge and taste. This store is also super cute and has a great selection of chic, fashionable frames that you will probably not see in other shops. Great store! read more

I typically don't Yelp, but had such a good experience here that I felt compelled to write a review. Choosing a pair of glasses can be difficult, but Jessica and Irene were VERY patient, good-humored, knowledgeable and friendly. They have a great selection and, more importantly, seem to take most insurances. I highly recommend James Leonard Opticians. read more

New to nyc and glad to have found this place. The eye exam was extremely comprehensive and the optician explained everything along the way. She let me know, with the state of my eyes, which exams I should be receiving and which would be unnecessary at the time. Just picked up my contacts today and the technician noticed the glasses I had on were low and offered to adjust them! Great service and overall had some great conversation through my two visits so far. read more

Amazing shop with amazing service. They use highest quality lenses and carry stylish frames (that you won't see yourself coming and going in). Tristan and the staff are excellent. Tristan is very experienced, and helped me pick the best eyeglass frame suited to my personal style, shape face, and eye color, that would work with my very high prescription. I am thrilled with my new frames and am going back to pick up a pair of sunglasses. In addition, they have an excellent optician Dr. Stoica, that can examine your eyes, glasses prescription and/or contact lenses. She is extremely thorough, better than most. I highly recommend James Leonard Opticians. I know that you will be pleased. read more

I stopped in today to replace the earpiece of my glasses I had bought here ~ 1 year earlier and Tristan quickly fixed the problem - I had broken off the end of the earpiece - within 10 minutes I was out the door with like-new glasses. I bought Lindberg frames & lenses from James Leonard and Tristan was professional and helped me laser in on the right frames. I appreciated his opinion- he didn't hedge when evaluating how they fit which is a truly important aspect of glasses buying. I'm left with a set of glasses that people like, I like, and are easily the most comfortable I've worn. read more

No review of James Leonard would be complete without the word "amazing," so let's get started: amazing service, amazing selection of glasses, amazing quality all around. And speaking of quality, this place doesn't compromise or waste any time on mediocrity, and they'll make it clear up front. They recommended me a Lindburg frame, but I was a bit skeptical at first. They explained everything in a simple way and I immediately felt like I was making the right choice. I took the leap and went with their suggestion. The glasses were ready a few days later. My jaw almost fell off and hit the midtown pavement when I put these on and saw how clear the world looked. The best pair of glasses I've ever worn, bar none. I was so happy, I came back a few minutes later and gave them a box of macaroons as a treat. I never do this. Their level of professionalism and depth of knowledge was much appreciated. My first night out with these new glasses, my friends noticed and gave me some unforgettable complements. I won't go anywhere else for glasses again! read more

I've been coming here for the last 4 years and each time I have a great experience. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, answering all of my questions and providing their honest opinions. I've had two opticians here and both have taken the time to understand my specific eye conditions and provide me with the best treatment. I also get my contact lens ordered through them and they're usually delivered within a couple days or less. So overall, really reliable. Shout out to Tristan who helped me pick out my last two pairs of Lindbergs! While the store itself is smaller than some of the other boxes, their inventory gets updated pretty regularly and everything is high quality. Would recommend 5/5 read more

Great visit! I don't do glasses, cuz I don't need em, see? Certain professionals MAY suggest that I MAY see CERTAIN things a LITTLE more clearly with a pair of spectacles but that's just not who I am man. So I came mainly to make sure I don't have eye cancer or anything else nasty lurking around in there. My eye exam was performed by Dr. Irina Stoica who is an absolutely lovely woman! She has an excellent bedside manner, very kind. She's also very articulate, and explains everything she is doing and why in a very accessible way. Additionally, she's got a great sense of humor, and we spent most of the exam laughing and making jokes with each other. I wish every doctors visit was like this! The business itself is clean, bright, and very welcoming. It may look small, but even when it got a little crowded the operation moved like clockwork and no one skipped a beat. The staff behind the counter was just as lovely as Dr. Stoica (pulling out chairs for patients and chatting adorably with little old ladies coming to pick up their lenses). If glasses are your thing, I felt they had a nice selection ranging from conservative, minimalist frames to some really fun colorful and retro style frames. Highly recommend! read more

I have been here quite a few times and every single time i leave feeling like i learned a lot about optics and frames. The expertise of the staff are unparalleled. Not only does everyone here understand the quality of good frames, lens and everything that goes with having great optics, but they are extremely friendly. I had an issue with my insurance and James himself spent 25 minutes on the phone trying to ascertain the issue and do his best to fix it - and he did. Really friendly staff, with great knowledge, highly recommended read more

You will never find better customer service anywhere. Not just at other opticians. Anywhere. With the help of Tristan & Gary, I bought a very attractive pair of frames a while back while visiting from San Francisco. That experience alone deserved 5 stars. I'm still getting compliments on them. Recently, those glasses broke. I'm extremely nearsighted and don't have a backup pair. I called Gary, frantic. He got my broken frames the next day via Fedex, and MIRACULOUSLY fixed the frames & shipped them back to SF the same day. Problem solved in 2 days! The J. Leonard team are more committed to customer help & satisfaction than literally any other business I know. They're impeccably courteous and efficient. If I could give them 10 stars, I would. read more

I cannot rave enough about James Leonard Opticians! I first found this office using good old fashioned google and I was impressed with the yelp reviews so I gave it a try and I was not disappointed. Dr. Irina Stoica is absolutely wonderful, she is incredibly knowledgeable and such a pleasure to speak with. After having such a great first impression I brought my mother in for a visit also to get a check up and try out some new styles for glasses. Tanya and Tristan were incredibly helpful with the process. They were immediately able to find glasses that would flatter my mom's face and I really appreciated that they were able to take her out of her comfort zone and try out styles she wouldn't normally pick for herself. Overall, I am beyond impressed with this establishment. Coming from Brooklyn, it's quite a commute but it is more than worth it. I recommend coming here for all your vision needs without any hesitation! read more

I'll admit that when faced with all of the high-quality frame and lens options at James Leonard that it was slightly intimidating to wade through all of the choices on offer. But I've quickly come to trust Tristan and Eugene's recommendations, on both frame manufacturer and lens features. I brought in a pair of white Ray-Bans needing progressive lenses. Note: Not all progressive lenses are created equal. My old pair of glasses are Pradas, equipped with what I thought were perfectly fine progressive lenses, but for these Ray-Bans that I brought in, Tristan recommended the Zeiss (same manufacturer of high-spec camera lenses) progressive lenses, which feature a wider view with zero distortion. These lenses are also designed to filter out computer screen glare, so I'm looking forward to reaping the benefits from this feature. Short version: I thought the adjustment from my old glasses to my new ones would take some adjustment, but it was a seamless transition. To be honest these lenses are a real game-changer. Meanwhile, when I returned to pick up these new glasses, in speaking with Eugene I learned quite a lot about some changes in the eyewear industry (such as how Alain Mikli no longer designs the Alain Mikli line of frames. No wonder their frames are so trashy now!) Anyway, I'll make sure to consult this team before making my next frame purchase. I should also mention the thorough and in-depth eye exam I had with Dr. Stoica, who was knowledgeable and very informed about topics like thinning retinas, how prescriptions and health may affect ocular health, etc. Very positive experience. This was my first visit but I'll be bringing my entire family back here in years to come. They have so many great glass frames to choose from as well. Highly recommended. read more

I can't recommend them highly enough! Tristan is fantastic! He helped me pick out frames that fit my face beautifully! I have a terrible eye for what will look good on me, and he was a tremendous help. He's honest about what does and doesn't look good, and helps accentuate what you like most about your face. He also had a great idea about turning an old pair of frames into prescription sunglasses. Since COVID, I haven't been into Manhattan and when I saw my lenses had an issue, I wasn't sure how to work it out. They were great and said it was no problem at all for me to mail the glasses in, they'd fix them, and mail them back to me. I'm really grateful for that care and accommodation. Dr. Stoica is also terrific! She did a wonderful job with the prescription, and I see more clearly than I have in years. I'll definitely be getting my eyeglasses from there from now on! read more

This store has lots pretty and unique eye glasses frames. Everyone working there is amazing, so caring and friendly. :)

Visited the 54 st location and I could have gotten better service from a corpse. The man who I was working with did nothing to encourage me to try on other frames when I did not see the ones I wanted. (They are online). Plus we kept having to prompt him to show other options. Needless to say I Ieft discouraged especially since I read such good reviews. read more

So it was time to get new glasses. Went back to James Leonard Opticians and had an eye exam and bought new frames. Actually ended up buying three - everyday glasses, sunglasses, and readers. Picking new frames can be a daunting task. Tristan made it easy; he was incredibly helpful and had a great eye for what looked best on me. I am so happy with what we picked out; I have received numerous compliments on both my regular glasses and my sunglasses. This is now the third time I have purchased frames over the years at James Leonard Opticians and I would still highly recommend them for both their selection of frames and great customer service. I went to get my annual eye exam done about a week ago. This was my first time at this office since moving. When I first walked in I was greeted by the staff and was sat right away and given some hand sanitizer. I was asked a few questions before the optometrist called me in. For my eye exam the optometrist was very kind, patient, and knowledgeable. She explained everything about my eyes to me and why certain things were the way they were. I've never had an optometrist do this for me before. She asked me questions about why my current prescription wasn't working for me (besides it changing). I had explained that my eyes felt like they were straining more now since I am WFH and in front of a computer screen now more than before. She came up with a prescription that would not only take care of my regular needs, but accommodate my new situation while working from home. After my exam I was taken out to the front so I can try on frames. The lady that worked with me was very flexible with me in trying to find the perfect frame. We'd try one frame and I'd say what I liked about it and what I didn't like and she'd find a new option based on my feedback. I didn't feel rushed in trying to find a frame and she let me try on as many as I wanted until we found the right frame. I received my new frames today (8 days later) and I love them and I'm so happy with them! I've been working on my computer all day and not once have I felt like I had to strain my eyes. Thank you! read more

I found James Leonard Opticians randomly as it was near my office and they accepted my insurance. I was 26 years old with little to no experience with glasses and less than zero experience with contacts. I had been wanting to get contacts for a while as I am around 20/50 in both eyes, but had been scared off multiple times by other opticians and was always HIGHLY squeamish about my eyes (never had been able to touch my eye or even put in eye drops). Dr. Stoica, quite literally, changed my life by being extremely, extremely patient with me throughout the contact training process and sticking with me every step of the way until I was FINALLY (after about 6 1-hr trainings) able to put in/take out the lenses. I never believed I would be able to do it; but she did and she never quit on me. I now see close to 20/20 and couldn't be happier. She was very professional the whole way through and allowed me to try multiple prescriptions/lens sizes until we found the perfect ones. I highly recommend JLO and Dr. Stoica to anyone looking for vision care, but especially to those who may be considering getting contact lenses. She is real master of her craft and caters to her patients needs to the fullest degree. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and made sure my contacts were ordered in a timely fashion and that I received my full rebate. You can tell they truly care about their patients, which is rare to find in a hub like Manhattan. I have already told multiple friends about JLO/Dr. Stoica and will continue to do so. read more
