Asked Mike if he could take prescription lenses in a larger frame and swap them into a smaller frame. Nothing was originally purchased at Purdy because my insurance did not cover this shop. They were the fourth shop I inquired at. First one said it was possible in theory, but they would not do it. The second said it was impossible. The third said they could do it on a 5 business day turn-around. Mike said he could do it on a same day basis for $20. His on-premises lab turned down the rim of the glass to match the smaller frame while keeping the lenses centered on my pupils. No scratches or marks on lens or frames. He delivered timely, convenient, service. And his lab returned the extra unframed lenses marked L & R too. A tough job done well at an excellent price. read more

Never having been in a situation where I felt compelled to review a business establishment, pro or con, I was initially hesitant to be as frank as I would like. But I would be extremely wary of the initial cordiality you may receive as a new customer. That manner will quickly degrade into utter dismissiveness as soon as you encounter a problem. I waited three weeks just to get a response ( which could only come from the owner) about whether I would be granted a credit which I had planned to use towards the purchase of a new frame or lenses. Granted it was after the 7-day return policy, but circumstances (making the lenses elsewhere) had extended the deadline. The frames were never worn because they were too large and consequently made use of the progressive lenses difficult. Whether I called or personally came into the store hoping to resolve the situation, I was disobliged with excuses: The first one: "We will let you know in 24-48 hours." The second one: "The owners are having a family emergency." The third one: "The owners are on vacation." They finally called to say that they would not take back the frames but would give me a . 10% discount on any future purchase. A company that claims "a reputation built on service and trust" certainly failed in this regard and sadly has lost a potential excellent customer. read more

Talk about good service... this place is amazing... you get personable treatment, without being rushed and are given many options (all within a range of good surprises). It is the second time I buy from that store and I am definitely returning. They have a good selection of conservative to trendy models. For the second time, they were able to deliver my prescription glasses on the next business days (despite my prescription being non standard). They clearly carry middle to high end frames so it is not the cheap side but I find it accurately priced. They also recommended my eye doctor which i find excellent. read more

Has anyone who has had eye glass lenses made at Purdys in NYC (who claim to be the best in service, quality and professional care) have this happen to them? Requested Premium Progressive Lenses like Varilux Physio, and have less expensive progressive lenses substituted and charged the higher price which is considerably more. Check your lenses if you purchased them at Purdys. Varilux has special markings lasered on the lenses and any optician can verify this. Beware of this store !!! read more

I've had one person fulfill half a contracted task and .... slide out from under the rest: I've had another person attempt to charge me for the pleasure of their having broken my watch. And then I went to Purdy, and the angels sang hosannas, and Michael was as deservedly confident as always, and I felt *better.* I've been going to Purdy since I was 15 or so: 20 years later, I've never had a bad experience. An eye doctor recommended Purdy to me for "problem prescriptions". which is how I found Purdy to start. I have always been happy with the service and the final product. I had a pair of glasses made here recently. Purdy's staff were quite accommodating, if a little aloof. The selection here is good, but has a specific theme to it. It's not as artsy-chic as the glasses at some of the places I've seen, but more fashionable and flashy. Few of the glasses they have are boring; they range from moderately interesting to just plain gaudy. In any case, they have lots of very expensive frames, elegantly presented. Purchased my frames a few years ago from this establishment, I went into the store to have my frames adjusted. While waiting for the frames, I tried on several different frames. To my surprise when I finished trying on the frames, a person was standing at the door watching my every move as though I am some sort of thief. They positioned themselves to block the doorway. When I inquired about the frames I was trying on the representative, quoted the price to me with a facial expression as though I couldn't afford it. While visiting NY from out of state last week the Swissflex glasses I wear post daily contacts, broke. I walked in off the street into H.L. Purdy and Michael, the owner was in store and ready to help. I was hoping for a temporary fix to get me through my vacation as usually these need to be sent away for any work. Michael asked me to come back in two hrs and he more than put a bandaid on the problem, he did a very good repair job with what he had on hand.
