This is the best damn optical store I have EVER shopped at. The store is small and tastefully appointed. The limited glasses in view are handsomely displayed and represent maybe 10% of the available frames. This way you are not bombarded with rows and rows of frames in a glass case or on a wall the way every other optical store displays their goods. The total selection is artfully curated with unique international designers and manufacturers, so if you are looking for names like Calvin Klein, Prada and Gucci stop looking here and go to Cohens Fashion Optical or any other neighborhood big box optical store. The product line is updated regularly so you can always find something new and interesting as well as an old favorite. The prices are on the premium side but worth it. The frames are unique and beautiful. It is unlikely that you will run across your frame on someone else. The staff are superior professionals who know their craft and understand eyewear and it's relation to the face. They will guide you toward frames that suit you best and even toward something you may not have initially chosen. They aren't just trying to sell you. There is no doctor on sight but they can refer you to one close by. They are also quite fanatical about the accuracy of the fit and how the prescription is filled. They really stand behind their product. I have purchased probably 6 or more frames from Surreal over the past few years and this is my Go To spot for my eyewear. I have a very small face with thick lens, which makes it challenging to find high quality glasses that look great while camouflaging the thickness of the lenses. My husband I have a gone to most every optical store in Manhattan over the past ten years looking for cool, elegant small frames. We always come back to Surreal! Over the years, my husband and I have purchased many frames form Surreal. Oleg, the proprietor, has a brilliant sense of style, offering frames that range from subdued professional to very hip, unique options. He's easy to work with and very patient. He understands complex prescriptions and has worked with me to get the thinnest lens possible. After yet another exhaustive search through Manhattan, yesterday we went back to Surreal for new frames and worked with Hager. She was incredibly lovely and patent, pulling frames that fit my face while keeping in mind my personal taste and preferences in color, shape and style. She definitely challenged my conservative nature and chose two frames, one that looks great for work, especially considering my colleagues see me exclusively on Zoom. The other frame is incredibly cool, made from light titanium and gives me a sense of contemporary high-end fashion. Hager was also very perceptive in choosing the perfect frame for my husband. As others have noted, Surreal isn't the cheapest place in NYC for frames. it's no Len's Crafters, to be sure. But, if you want unique, stylish, well made frames from a store that provides patent, personalized service, Surreal is the place to go! read more

have worn glasses since I was 13 and never liked wearing glasses, until going to Surreal Eyewear. I use to live in NYC (now Albany), and could not find a decent pair of glasses that looked professional without being boring. The owner happened to be there that day and picked out glasses for me and they were truly perfect. I get compliments on my glasses on a weekly basis. I should mention I generally hate it when sales staff starts making unsolicited suggestions of what to buy. I generally feel like they are simply going to suggest the most expensive thing in the store. He picked the PERFECT pair of glasses. I was concern about the price but the owner assured me that they were made from titanium and would hold up, even though I'm touch on my glasses. If they didn't I could come back to the store and get them fixed for free. So they did break and went back to complain. I barely had to say a word about what I discussed with the owner. They immediately contacted the designer as well as the distributor and replaced the frames. They are mailing the replacement to my house in Albany. This store is an excellent example of why I choose to shop at smaller businesses who are willing to go the extra mile for the customer. I was travelling to NYC last week, and decided to get new frames while I was there. After a bit of research I decided on Surreal Eyewear, and I am thrilled that I did! Lala was SO MUCH FUN, and a huge help! I tired on A LOT of frames (ended up with my first pair lol), she was super encouraging, and never even blinked if I wanted to try on yet another pair! Oleg is amazing. I absolutely adore the frames he helped me choose. He has amazing taste and beautiful and unique collections (especially French frames)... plus his bulldog is so cute! The selection is precisely what I like- all from a curated collection from actual frame designers (i.e. not that plastic random stuff you find elsewhere with a Prada logo stuck on it)- mostly from abroad where this is still considered a craft but also from the States too. AND- for my eyeglasses he has this special coating or curation process with the lenses that create the effect of a "digital" experience. What this translates to is that when I'm wearing my glasses I feel like I'm wearing contacts- there are no annoying blind spots. And my glasses are cute cat eye styled lenses, so their small; nonetheless I see everything. Oleg and his team are stylists for the face, they will not let you out of the store w/out a perfect lens fit, or shape for your face. They never, ever make you feel that pressure to make a purchase they make a true experience for you and you walk out feeling good about yourself. There glasses last for years and years that is how good the quality is! I prefer quality to quantity on any budget, so I always own a Surreal pair for all my needs. I once bought a very expensive pair of glasses and I dropped them I was devastated, I went back to see if Oleg could repair much to my surprise he was able to fix them w/out a charge and any other store would have said we can't fix them you need to replace. Guy seemed nice enough at first. He was helping another guest and invited us to look at some glasses. We did, found some great sunglasses - which was a relief because we have been looking for frames for a very long time - and then he snapped at us rudely to stop looking until he was done with the guest he was helping, explaining that he was worried about shoplifters, etc etc. Apparently he cared more about insulting us than losing a sale. If you're not picky about your eyewear, I've learned the hard way you should be! Surreal has a fantastic selection of frames, and best of all, top-notch customer service. I have a complicated eye prescription and I dread shopping for glasses, but Oleg made it a pleasure. He helped me find the perfect frames and suggested I try digital lenses, which were really ideal for my situation.
